you have to hold right click, not bump into anything when youre going back into the water and also if you grab them on land they have to be at most 50% of your body weight. sometimes things just manage to escape anyway but usually if you follow those rules youll be fine

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if they did solely because of that since they seemingly cannot keep it under control. Only recently I lost my FG Croc on AU1 that I had kept alive for ages to a cheater. Another croc showed up and killed me in only three hits, two of which were to the tail as well.

And seen cheaters that straight up couldn't be hurt before too, and heard stories where people would get 1 tapped by baby stuff too.
