If the previous AI issue is still occuring, there should be lots of AI but it will run from you way before you can see it.

You won't smell AI, and audio for them has also been problematic (since they don't call while running from you).
The best way to get around it is to either have friends and spread out to push them towards water or mixpack with a herbivore that won't make them run
