honestly, since nihilus´s spirit is in his mask, you could explain him being powered down as a result of not being used to a new body/ his new body resisting him, which would also give whatever heroes were chosen to be lambs to the slaughter, an abitrary time limit before he becomes unstoppable and eats their souls

But to be honest IF they include Nihilus I hope they will do it properly the best way in my opinion would be to awaken him again by as an example sucking out Reys Force power turning her into a wound in the force and than using her to defeat the already weak Nihilus that got newly resurrected it could link legends with cannon and also be a „redemption“ arc for Reys poor character
