OKAY i will give a very tl;dr of his lore

that lady in those 2 animatics is his wife from before the war. hes a ghoul which follows fallout ghoul lore (im sure u know) . she died and he didn't. so he spent the next 2 centuries living alone and gradually, due to stir craziness, forgot literally everything including how to interact with people (he re-taught himself by example of dogs outside his window HBJRFDS... he acts like a whole animal)

he was already kind of a numbskull before the war and 2 centuries' worth of amnesia + being 60+ years old biologically doesn't quite help

First Animal species of the day (450) :
Northern pike / (Esox lucius)

#

The northern pike (Esox lucius) is a species of carnivorous fish of the genus Esox (pikes). They are commonly found in moderately salty and fresh waters of the Northern Hemisphere (i.e. holarctic in distribution). They are known simply as a pike (PL: pike) in Great Britain, Ireland, most of Eastern Europe, Canada and the U.S., although in the Midwest, they may be called a Northern.[2]

Pike can grow to a relatively large size. Their average length is about 40–55 cm (16–22 in), with maximum recorded lengths of up to 150 cm (59 in) and maximum weights of 28.4 kg (63 lb).[3] The IGFA currently recognises a 25 kg (55 lb) pike caught by Lothar Louis on Greffern Lake, Germany, on 16 October 1986, as the all-tackle world-record holding northern pike. [4] Northern pike grow to larger sizes in Eurasia than in North America, and in coastal Eurasian regions than inland ones.[5]

#

Habitat

Pike are found in sluggish streams and shallow, weedy places in lakes and reservoirs, as well as in cold, clear, rocky waters. They are typical ambush predators; they lie in wait for prey, holding perfectly still for long periods, and then exhibit remarkable acceleration as they strike. They inhabit any water body that contains fish, but suitable places for spawning are also essential. Because of their cannibalistic nature, young pike need places where they can take shelter between plants so they are not eaten. In both cases, rich submerged vegetation is needed. Pike are seldom found in brackish water, except for the Baltic Sea area, here they can be found spending time both in the mouths of rivers and in the open brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. It is normal for pike to return to fresh water after a period in these brackish waters.[13] They seem to prefer water with less turbidity, but that is likely related to their dependence on the presence of vegetation.[citation needed]

#

Geographic distribution

Esox lucius is found in fresh water throughout the Northern Hemisphere, including Russia, Europe, and North America. It has also been introduced to lakes in Morocco, and is even found in brackish water of the Baltic Sea, but they are confined to the low-salinity water at the surface of the sea, and are seldom seen in brackish water elsewhere.[citation needed]

Within North America, northern pike populations are found in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, northern Texas, northern New Mexico, northern Arizona, Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Québec (pike are rare in British Columbia and east coast provinces). Watersheds in which pike are found include the Ohio Valley, the upper Mississippi River and its tributaries, and the Great Lakes Basin. They are also stocked in, or have been introduced to, some western lakes and reservoirs for sport fishing, although some fisheries managers believe this practice often threatens other species of fish such as bass, trout, and salmon, causing government agencies to attempt to exterminate the pike by poisoning lakes, such as Stormy Lake, Alaska.[14] E. lucius is a severe invasive predator in Box Canyon Reservoir on the Pend Oreille River in northeastern Washington.[15]

#

Description

Northern pike are most often olive green, shading from yellow to white along the belly. The flank is marked with short, light bar-like spots and a few to many dark spots on the fins. Sometimes, the fins are reddish. Younger pike have yellow stripes along a green body; later, the stripes divide into light spots and the body turns from green to olive green. The lower half of the gill cover lacks scales, and it has large sensory pores on its head and on the underside of its lower jaw which are part of the lateral line system. Unlike the similar-looking and closely related muskellunge, the northern pike has light markings on a dark body background and fewer than six sensory pores on the underside of each side of the lower jaw.

A hybrid between northern pike and muskellunge is known as a tiger muskellunge (Esox masquinongy × lucius or Esox lucius × masquinongy,[7] depending on the sex of each of the contributing species). In the hybrids, the males are invariably sterile, while females are often fertile, and may back-cross with the parent species.[8] Another form of northern pike, the silver pike, is not a subspecies but rather a mutation that occurs in scattered populations. Silver pike, sometimes called silver muskellunge, lack the rows of spots and appear silver, white, or silvery-blue in color.[9] When ill, silver pike have been known to display a somewhat purplish hue; long illness is also the most common cause of male sterility.

In Italy, the newly identified species Esox cisalpinus ("southern pike") was long thought to be a color variation of the northern pike, but was in 2011 announced to be a species of its own.[10]

#

Behaviour
Aggression
The northern pike is a relatively aggressive species, especially with regard to feeding. For example, when food sources are scarce, cannibalism develops, starting around five weeks in a small percentage of populations.[16] This cannibalism occurs when the ratio of predator to prey is two to one.[16] One can expect this because when food is scarce, Northern pike fight for survival, such as turning on smaller pike to feed; this is seen in other species such as tiger salamanders. Usually, pike tend to feed on smaller fish, such as the banded killifish. However, when pike exceed 700 mm (28 in) long, they feed on larger fish.[17]

Because of cannibalism when food is short, pike suffer a fairly high young mortality rate.[18] Cannibalism is more prevalent in cool summers, as the upcoming pike have slow growth rates in that season and might not be able to reach a size to deter the larger pike. Cannibalism is likely to arise in low growth and low food conditions.[18] Pike do not discriminate siblings well,[citation needed] so cannibalism between siblings is likely.

#

Aggression also arises from a need for space.[19] Young pike tend to have their food stolen by larger pike.[19] Pike are aggressive if not given enough space because they are territorial.[20] They use a form of foraging known as ambush foraging. Unlike species such as perch, pike undergo bursts of energy instead of actively chasing down prey. As such, a fair amount of inactive time occurs until they find prey. Hunting efficiency decreases with competition;[20] the larger the pike, the larger the area controlled by that particular pike. An inverse relation to vegetation density and pike size exists, which is due to the possibility of cannibalism from the largest pike.[21] This makes sense, as the smaller pike need more vegetation to avoid being eaten. Large pike do not have this worry and can afford the advantage of a large line of sight. They prefer a tree structure habitat.[21]

There has been at least one instance of a pike attacking a dog.[22]

Pike are occasionally preyed upon by otters.[23]

#

Physical behavioural traits
Pike are capable of "fast start" movements, which are sudden high-energy bursts of unsteady swimming.[24] Many other fish exhibit this movement as well. Most fish use this mechanism to avoid life-threatening situations. For the pike, however, it is a tool used to capture prey from their sedentary positions. They flash out in such bursts and capture their prey. These fast starts terminate when the pike has reached maximum velocity.[24] During such motions, pike make "S" conformations while swimming at high rates. To decelerate, they, simply make a "C" conformation, exponentially slowing down their speed so that they can "stop".[24] An interesting behavioural trait that pike have is that they have short digestion times and long feeding periods.[17] They can undergo many of these fast bursts to collect as much prey as they can. Pike are least active during the night.[20]

#

Reproduction
Pike have a strong homing behaviour;[21] they inhabit certain areas by nature. During the summer, they tend to group closer to vegetation than during the winter.[25] The exact reason is not clear, but likely is a result of foraging or possibly reproductive needs to safeguard young. Pike diel rhythm changes significantly over the year.[25] On sunny days, pike stay closer to the shallow shore. On windy days, they are further from shore.[26] When close to the shore, pike have a preference for shallow, vegetated areas.[26] Pike are more stationary in reservoirs than lakes.[25] A possibility is that lakes have more prey to feed upon, or possibly in reservoirs prey will ultimately cross paths with the pike. As such, this could be a form of energy conservation. Pike breed in the spring.[19]

#

Pike are physically capable of breeding at an age of about two years, spawning in spring when the water temperature first reaches about 9 °C (48 °F). They have a tendency to lay a large number of eggs.[19] A likely explanation for such actions is to produce as many surviving offspring as possible, as many most likely die early in life. In females, the gonads enlarge when it is time to shed her eggs.[19] However, after they are shed, these eggs will not hatch if the water is below 6 °C (43 °F).[19] Male pike arrive at the breeding grounds before females do, preceding them by a few weeks. In addition, the males stay after the spawning is finished.[19] Parental stock is vital for pike success.[27] Egg survival has been shown to be positively correlated with number of eggs laid.[27] For breeding, the more stable the water, the greater the fitness of the pike.[28] Mortality results from toxic concentrations of iron or rapid temperature changes,[28] and adult abundance and the strength of the resulting year classes are not related. It is based upon two points of development: one during embryo stage between fertilization and closure of the blastopore, and the second between hatching and the termination of the alevin stage.[28]

#

The colour of the sticky eggs is yellow to orange; the diameter is 2.5 to 3 mm (0.098 to 0.118 in). The embryos are 7.5 to 10 mm (0.30 to 0.39 in) in length and able to swim after hatching, but stay on the bottom for some time. The embryonic stage is five to 16 days, dependent on water temperature (at 19 °C (66 °F) and 10 °C (50 °F), respectively). Under natural circumstances, the survival from free-swimming larva to 75-mm pike is around 5%.[citation needed]

#

Food

The young, free-swimming pike feed on small invertebrates starting with Daphnia, and quickly move on to bigger prey, such as Asellus and Gammarus. When the body length is 4 to 8 cm (1.6 to 3.1 in), they start feeding on small fish.

A pike has a very typical hunting behaviour; it is able to remain stationary in the water by moving the last fin rays of the dorsal fins and the pectoral fins. Before striking, it bends its body and darts out to the prey using the large surface of its caudal fin, dorsal fin, and anal fin to propel itself. The fish has a distinctive habit of catching its prey sideways in the mouth, immobilising it with its sharp, backward-pointing teeth, and then turning the prey headfirst to swallow it. It eats mainly fish and frogs, but also small mammals and birds fall prey to pike. Young pike have been found dead from choking on a pike of a similar size, an observation referred to by the renowned English poet Ted Hughes in his famous poem "Pike".[29] Northern pike also feed on insects, crayfish, and leeches.[30] They are not very particular and eat spiny fish like perch, and will even take fish as small as sticklebacks if they are the only available prey.

#

Pike are known to occasionally hunt and consume larger water birds, such as an incident in 2016 when an individual was observed trying to drown and eat a great crested grebe,[31] an incident in which a pike choked to death after killing and attempting to eat a tufted duck,[32] as well as an incident in 2015 where an attack by a large pike between three and four feet long was implicated as a possible cause for the injury and death of an adult mute swan[33] on Lower Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, but it is generally believed that such attacks are only rare occurrences.

The northern pike is a largely solitary predator. It migrates during a spawning season, and it follows prey fish like common roaches to their deeper winter quarters. Sometimes, divers observe groups of similar-sized pike that cooperate some to start hunting at the same time, so "wolfpack" theories are given. Large pike can be caught on dead immobile fish, so these pike are thought to move about in a rather large territory to find food. Large pike are also known to cruise large water bodies at a few metres deep, probably pursuing schools of prey fish. Smaller pike are more of ambush predators, probably because of their vulnerability to cannibalism. Pike are often found near the exit of culverts, which can be attributed to the presence of schools of prey fish and the opportunity for ambush. Being potamodromous, all esocids tend to display limited migration, although some local movement may be of key significance for population dynamics. In the Baltic, they are known to follow herring schools, so have some seasonal migration.

First Animal species of the day (451) :
Lesser fruit fly / (Drosophila melanogaster)

#

Drosophila melanogaster is a species of fly (an insect of the order Diptera) in the family Drosophilidae. The species is often referred to as the fruit fly or lesser fruit fly, or less commonly the "vinegar fly", "pomace fly",[a][5] or "banana fly".[6] In the wild, D. melanogaster are attracted to rotting fruit and fermenting beverages, and are often found in orchards, kitchens and pubs.

Starting with Charles W. Woodworth's 1901 proposal of the use of this species as a model organism,[7][8] D. melanogaster continues to be widely used for biological research in genetics, physiology, microbial pathogenesis, and life history evolution. D. melanogaster was the first animal to be launched into space in 1947.[9] As of 2017, six Nobel Prizes have been awarded to drosophilists for their work using the insect.[10][11]

#

Drosophila melanogaster is typically used in research owing to its rapid life cycle, relatively simple genetics with only four pairs of chromosomes, and large number of offspring per generation.[12] It was originally an African species, with all non-African lineages having a common origin.[13] Its geographic range includes all continents, including islands.[14] D. melanogaster is a common pest in homes, restaurants, and other places where food is served.[15]

Flies belonging to the family Tephritidae are also called "fruit flies". This can cause confusion, especially in the Mediterranean, Australia, and South Africa, where the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata is an economic pest.

#

Physical appearance
Unlike humans, the sex and physical appearance of fruit flies is not influenced by hormones.[16] The appearance and sex of fruit flies is determined only by genetic information.[16]

Female fruit flies are substantially larger than male fruit flies, with females having bodies that are up to 30% larger than an adult male.[17][18]

Wild type fruit flies are yellow-brown, with brick-red eyes and transverse black rings across the abdomen. The black portions of the abdomen are the inspiration for the species name (melanogaster = "black-bellied"). The brick-red color of the eyes of the wild type fly are due to two pigments:[19] xanthommatin, which is brown and is derived from tryptophan, and drosopterins, which are red and are derived from guanosine triphosphate.[19] They exhibit sexual dimorphism; females are about 2.5 mm (0.10 in) long; males are slightly smaller. Furthermore, males have a cluster of spiky hairs (claspers) surrounding the reproducing parts used to attach to the female during mating. Extensive images are found at FlyBase.[20]

#

Drosophila melanogaster can be distinguished from related species by the following combination of features: gena ~1/10 diameter of eye at greatest vertical height; wing hyaline and with costal index 2.4; male protarsus with a single row of ~12 setae forming a sex comb; male epandrial posterior lobe small and nearly triangular; female abdominal tergite 6 with dark band running to its ventral margin; female oviscapt small, pale, without dorsodistal depression and with 12-13 peg-like outer ovisensilla.[21][22]

Drosophila melanogaster flies can sense air currents with the hairs on their backs. Their eyes are sensitive to slight differences in light intensity and will instinctively fly away when a shadow or other movement is detected.[23]

#

Lifecycle and reproduction

Under optimal growth conditions at 25 °C (77 °F), the D. melanogaster lifespan is about 50 days from egg to death.[24] The developmental period for D. melanogaster varies with temperature, as with many ectothermic species. The shortest development time (egg to adult), seven days, is achieved at 28 °C (82 °F).[25][26] Development times increase at higher temperatures (11 days at 30 °C or 86 °F) due to heat stress. Under ideal conditions, the development time at 25 °C (77 °F) is 8+1⁄2 days,[25][26][27] at 18 °C (64 °F) it takes 19 days[25][26] and at 12 °C (54 °F) it takes over 50 days.[25][26] Under crowded conditions, development time increases,[28] while the emerging flies are smaller.[28][29] Females lay some 400 eggs (embryos), about five at a time, into rotting fruit or other suitable material such as decaying mushrooms and sap fluxes. Drosophila melanogaster is a holometabolous insect, so it undergoes a full metamorphosis. Their life cycle is broken down into four stages: embryo, larva, pupa, adult.[30] The eggs, which are about 0.5 mm long, hatch after 12–15 hours (at 25 °C or 77 °F).[25][26] The resulting larvae grow for about four days (at 25 °C) while molting twice (into second- and third-instar larvae), at about 24 and 48 hours after hatching.[25][26] During this time, they feed on the microorganisms that decompose the fruit, as well as on the sugar of the fruit itself. The mother puts feces on the egg sacs to establish the same microbial composition in the larvae's guts that has worked positively for herself.[31] Then the larvae encapsulate in the puparium and undergo a four-day-long metamorphosis (at 25 °C), after which the adults eclose (emerge).[25][26]

Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly, has been a significant model organism in embryonic development research. Many of its genes that regulate embryonic development and their mechanisms of action have been crucial in understanding the fundamental principles of embryonic development regulation in many multicellular organisms, including humans. Here are some important genes regulating embryonic development in Drosophila melanogaster and their modes of action:

Maternal genes: These genes are encoded in the female fruit fly and are present in the early stages of embryo development. They determine the embryo's main features and early development. For example, the gene called Bicoid regulates the formation of the embryo's anterior end, and its absence leads to an embryo lacking a head.

Zygotic genes: These genes are activated in later stages of embryo development when the fruit fly embryo begins to produce its own genetic products. For example, the hunchback gene regulates the formation of segments in the embryo.

Homeotic genes: This gene family regulates segmentation and axial patterning in development. They act as regulatory factors that determine cell fate in embryonic development. For example, the gene called Antennapedia regulates the formation of anterior limbs in the embryo.

#

Morphogens: These are molecules that form gradients in embryonic development and regulate cell fate depending on their position in the gradient. For example, the Hedgehog morphogen regulates the differentiation of segments and segment identity in the fruit fly embryo.

These genes and their modes of action form a complex regulatory network that guides the embryonic development of Drosophila melanogaster. They influence cell differentiation, segment formation, and axial patterning in the embryo, ultimately leading to the development of a fully formed adult fruit fly.

Model organism in genetics
D. melanogaster remains one of the most studied organisms in biological research, particularly in genetics and developmental biology. It is also employed in studies of environmental mutagenesis.

#

History of use in genetic analysis

D. melanogaster was among the first organisms used for genetic analysis, and today it is one of the most widely used and genetically best-known of all eukaryotic organisms. All organisms use common genetic systems; therefore, comprehending processes such as transcription and replication in fruit flies helps in understanding these processes in other eukaryotes, including humans.[50]

Thomas Hunt Morgan began using fruit flies in experimental studies of heredity at Columbia University in 1910 in a laboratory known as the Fly Room. The Fly Room was cramped with eight desks, each occupied by students and their experiments. They started off experiments using milk bottles to rear the fruit flies and handheld lenses for observing their traits. The lenses were later replaced by microscopes, which enhanced their observations. Morgan and his students eventually elucidated many basic principles of heredity, including sex-linked inheritance, epistasis, multiple alleles, and gene mapping.[50]

D. melanogaster had historically been used in laboratories to study genetics and patterns of inheritance. However, D. melanogaster also has importance in environmental mutagenesis research, allowing researchers to study the effects of specific environmental mutagens.[51]

#

Similarity to humans
A June 2001 study by National Human Genome Research Institute comparing the fruit fly and human genome estimated that about 60% of genes are conserved between the two species.[83] About 75% of known human disease genes have a recognizable match in the genome of fruit flies,[84] and 50% of fly protein sequences have mammalian homologs [citation needed]. An online database called Homophila is available to search for human disease gene homologues in flies and vice versa.[85]

Drosophila is being used as a genetic model for several human diseases including the neurodegenerative disorders Parkinson's, Huntington's, spinocerebellar ataxia and Alzheimer's disease.[86] The fly is also being used to study mechanisms underlying aging and oxidative stress, immunity, diabetes, and cancer, as well as drug abuse.[87][88][89]

#

Grooming
Drosophila are known to exhibit grooming behaviors that are executed in a predictable manner. Drosophila consistently begin a grooming sequence by using their front legs to clean the eyes, then the head and antennae. Using their hind legs, Drosophila proceed to groom their abdomen, and finally the wings and thorax. Throughout this sequence, Drosophila periodically rub their legs together to get rid of excess dust and debris that accumulates during the grooming process.[172]

Grooming behaviors have been shown to be executed in a suppression hierarchy. This means that grooming behaviors that occur at the beginning of the sequence prevent those that come later in the sequence from occurring simultaneously, as the grooming sequence consists of mutually exclusive behaviors.[173][174] This hierarchy does not prevent Drosophila from returning to grooming behaviors that have already been accessed in the grooming sequence.[173] The order of grooming behaviors in the suppression hierarchy is thought to be related to the priority of cleaning a specific body part. For example, the eyes and antennae are likely executed early on in the grooming sequence to prevent debris from interfering with the function of D. melanogaster's sensory organs.[173][174]

#

Walking

Like many other hexapod insects, Drosophila typically walk using a tripod gait.[176] This means that three of the legs swing together while the other three remain stationary, or in stance. Specifically, the middle leg moves in phase with the contralateral front and hind legs. However, variability around the tripod configuration exists along a continuum, meaning that flies do not exhibit distinct transitions between different gaits.[177] At fast walking speeds, the walking configuration is mostly tripod (3 legs in stance), but at slower walking speeds, flies are more likely to have four (tetrapod) or five legs in stance (wave).[178][179] These transitions may help to optimize static stability.[180] Because flies are so small, inertial forces are negligible compared with the elastic forces of their muscles and joints or the viscous forces of the surrounding air.[181]

#

Flight
Flies fly via straight sequences of movement interspersed by rapid turns called saccades.[182] During these turns, a fly is able to rotate 90° in less than 50 milliseconds.[182]

Characteristics of Drosophila flight may be dominated by the viscosity of the air, rather than the inertia of the fly body, but the opposite case with inertia as the dominant force may occur.[182] However, subsequent work showed that while the viscous effects on the insect body during flight may be negligible, the aerodynamic forces on the wings themselves actually cause fruit flies' turns to be damped viscously.[183]

Drosophila melanogaster is a species of fly (an insect of the order Diptera) in the family Drosophilidae. The species is often referred to as the fruit fly or lesser fruit fly, or less commonly the "vinegar fly", "pomace fly", or "banana fly". In the wild, D. melanogaster are attracted to rotting fruit and fermenting beverages, and are often fou...

First Animal species of the day (452) :
Lined chiton / (Tonicella lineata)

#

Tonicella lineata, commonly known as the lined chiton, is a species of chiton from the North Pacific.

#

Size and description
Tonicella lineata is a very colorful chiton, having blue, purple or black straight or zig-zag lines on each of the eight valves. The background color of the valves is often brown or red, but can also be bright blue or yellow to orange. The girdle is hairless and brown to red or pink, often with regular yellow or white patches. This species grows to 5 cm in length.

#

Distribution and habitat
The natural range of T. lineata stretches from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to San Miguel Island of California, as well as the Sea of Okhotsk of Russia and northern Japan. This species has also been found in Puget Sound, Washington on floats.[3] It has been recorded from intertidal and subtidal waters to a depth of 30 to 90 m (98 to 295 ft).[2][4]

#

Similar species
Tonicella lokii is extremely similar but has radiating bands on the girdle. Tonicella undocaerulea is very similar but lacks a dark border to the concentric blue lines on the anterior plate. Mopalia spectabilis looks superficially similar due to its bright blue wavy lines on the valves, but has a hairy girdle.[1] It can also be confused with Tonicella insignis (Reeve, 1847) which retains the zig-zag pattern in concentric rings on the first and eighth valves and also the lines are most often white.[2]

#

Biology
Tonicella lineata often occurs on rocks that are encrusted by coralline algae; presumably this is what their coloration is intended to camouflage against. If knocked from its substrate, T. lineata will contract into a ball in order to protect its vulnerable ventral side, similar to many isopods. Coralline algae are also the major food item of T. lineata. On the Oregon coast this species can be found living under purple urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus). This species is preyed upon by the sea stars Pisaster ochraceus and Leptasterias haxactis.[5] Animals out of water only have about 73% the respiration of submerged animals, and likely incur an oxygen debt while out of water that must be repaid once resubmerged.[4] When submerged, gas exchange occurs by water flowing from the anterior portion of the chiton into the mantle cavity where the ctenidia (gills) reside in the pallial grooves. This also takes care of waste produced as the water passes over the anus after the ctenidia and carries away feces.[6]

First Animal species of the day (453) :
Bath sponge / (Spongia officinalis)

#

Spongia officinalis, better known as a variety of bath sponge, is a commercially used sea sponge.[2] Individuals grow in large lobes with small openings and are formed by a mesh of primary and secondary fibers.[3][2] It is light grey to black in color.[3] It is found throughout the Mediterranean Sea up to 100 meters deep on rocky or sandy surfaces.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Spongia officinalis can reproduce both asexually, through budding or fragmentation, or sexually.[8] Individuals can be dioecious or sequential hermaphrodites.[8] The free-swimming larvae are lecithotrophic and grow slowly after attaching to a benthic surface.[8][9][10]

#

Humans use and interact with S. officinalis in a variety of ways. Harvested sponges have been used throughout history for many purposes, including washing and painting.[2] Over-harvesting and sponge disease have led to a decrease in population.[2][3][11] Sponge fishing practices have slowly changed over time as new technology has developed and sponge farming is now in use to decrease stress on wild S. officinalis populations.[3][11] Sponge farming is also recommended as a solution to reducing marine organic pollution, especially from fish farms.[3][2][12][13]

#

Anatomy and morphology
Spongia officinalis grows in massive, globular lobes with fine openings which are slightly elevated and have cone-shaped voids (conules).[3] Oscula can either be scattered or at the tip of the lobes.[2]

Spongia officinalis have an ectosomal skeleton composed of primary and secondary fibers. Together, they form the conulose openings.[2] The sponge also contains a choanosomal skeleton, which consists of a dense, irregular mesh of polygons formed by secondary fibers and primary fibers rise from it.[2] The primary fibers are 50 to 100 nanometers in diameter and are composed of spongin and inclusions such as sand grains and spicules. The secondary fibers are 20 to 35 nanometers in diameter and are composed of only spongin without inclusions.[2]

Spongia officinalis is light grey to black in color.[3]

#

Distribution and habitat

Spongia officinalis can be found in the Mediterranean Sea along the coasts of Croatia, Greece, the Aegean islands, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Italy, France and Spain.[2]

They are distributed in shallow water (1 to 10 meters below the surface) down to 100 meters deep.[2][3] They will grow on littoral rocky surfaces, sandy bottoms, and vertical walls in well-oxygenated water.[3]

#

Reproduction
Spongia officinalis can reproduce asexually via budding or fragmentation.[8]

Sexual reproduction is also common in S. officinalis.[8] Individuals can be dioecious, either male or female, or sequential hermaphrodites, meaning they can alternate between male and female.[8] Successive hermaphroditism can take place within one reproductive season.[8] Sperm is formed in spermatic cysts and is free spawned into the surrounding water.[8] Sperm is captured by females and is transported to oocytes within the sponge where fertilization takes place.[8] The occurrence of sexual reproduction peaks from October to November.[8] There is no relationship between age and reproductive ability in S. officinalis.[8]

#

Life cycle

After fertilization, S. officinalis embryos develop in choanosomal tissue of the female sponge.[8] Cleavage of cells begins after fertilization, around November, and is total and equal.[8] By May, a stereoblastula, or a blastula without a clear central cavity, forms.[8] From May to July, parenchymella larva, or larva which is a mass of cells enveloped in flagellated cells, develop.[8] These larvae are released from the adult from June to July.[8] Like all sponges, S. officinalis larvae are lecithotrophic, meaning they cannot feed as larva and instead rely on energy reserves provided by the mother.[10] Therefore, they only remain as a free-floating larva for a short period before settling on a benthic surface where they grow into an adult sponge.[10]

#

Human uses and interactions
Uses

See also: Sponge (tool)
The use of bath sponges for bathing and other purposes originated in Greece and spread all around Europe during the Middle Ages. From there, the use of sponges spread further, with Mediterranean bath sponges currently being shipped globally.[2] S. officinalis was used by humans in many ways in the past. Aside from using the sponge for washing, some of these uses included padding in Roman soldiers helmets, as absorbent material during surgeries, as medicine to help digestive issues, and as a primitive "contraceptive sponge". Today, sponges are still used for washing and are also used for recreational purposes, like sponge painting.[2]

#

Fishing practices
Main article: Sponge diving
Sponge fishing in the Mediterranean has been in practice since ancient times. Aristotle even wrote of it around 350 BC.[2] Traditionally, sponge fishing was practiced by Greeks who dove underwater to collect specimens.[2] The practice remained this way until the late 19th century.[2] There was a small increase in sponge fishing at the end of the 19th century due to the invention of a new diving suit, but the suit was not very safe so sponge fishing did not grow much in popularity. Around 1910 to 1930, an underwater breathing device was created and, since then, this method of sponge fishing has continually grown in popularity.[2]

Sponges can also be collected after they wash up on beaches or they can be fished from a boat.[2]

#

Farming
Main article: Aquaculture of sea sponges
As S. officinalis populations declined due to over-harvest, as discussed below, interest in cultivation increased.[2][11] Towards the end of the 19th century, the first sponge farming attempts were made in the Mediterranean Sea by fixing sponge fragments onto wooden boxes and setting them into suitable habitats. Although the efforts were successful, sponge farming activity did not increase significantly until the end of the 20th century and currently, it is performed worldwide.[2]

Sponge farming not only decreases stress on S. officinalis populations, it also can be used as a sustainable method to reduce marine organic pollution because, sponges being filter feeders, they efficiently remove organic suspended particles from water.[2][3][11] For this reason, sponge cultivation in combination with fish farming has been recommended as a method to reduce organic pollution from fish farms.[2][3][12][13]

In a showstopping end to the Game Awards 2024, Naughty Dog has revealed its latest adventure will feature space Porches, Kumail Nunjiani, and the pop music stylings of the Pet Shop Boys? If that's not enough, it will also pack in a soundtrack from Oscar winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

First Animal species of the day (454) :
Giant whip scorpion / (Mastigoproctus giganteus)

#

Mastigoproctus giganteus,[1] the giant whip scorpion, also called the giant vinegaroon or grampus,[2][3] is a species of whip scorpions in the family Thelyphonidae. Its native range is from the Southern United States to Mexico.[4]

#

Description
This species can grow to be 40–60 millimetres (1.6–2.4 in) long, excluding the tail.[2][3] They have six legs used for movement, two long antenniform front legs that they use to feel around for prey and detect vibrations, and two large pedipalps modified into claws that they use to crush their prey.[3] They have a long, thin, whip-like tail, the origin of the common name whipscorpion. From the base of this tail they can spray a substance composed of 85% acetic acid in order to defend themselves.[2] Acetic acid is the main component of vinegar, so the spray smells strongly of vinegar, leading to the common name "vinegaroon".[2][3]

Mastigoproctus giganteus have eight eyes: two in a pair on the front of the head and three on each side of the head.[3] These eyes are very weak, so Mastigoproctus giganteus navigates mostly by feeling with its long front legs, tail, and pedipalps.[3]

#

Habitat
Mastigoproctus giganteus lives in the southern US and in Mexico at elevations up to 6000 meters.[4] It preys on various insects, worms, and slugs.[5] It is an efficient predator that feeds at night on a variety of arthropods, primarily insects such as cockroaches and crickets, as well as millipedes and other arachnids. It has even been recorded feeding on small frogs and toads. It uses its large pedipalps to hold prey, while the chelicerae tear and bite the prey.[6]

Mastigoproctus giganteus is the only species of family Thelyphonidae that occurs in the United States,[7] where it is found in Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.[8]

Vinegaroons are efficient predators of scorpions and are sometimes acquired for that purpose.[9] M. giganteus in turn may be eaten by raccoons, coatis, armadillos, skunks, bears, hogs and peccaries,[10] ground birds such as roadrunners, lizards, and tarantulas.[11]

#

ife cycle and reproduction
Mastigoproctus giganteus typically lives 4 to 7 years, but the female reproduces only once, producing about 40 offspring which she protects and feeds in their early lives.[4]

Males fight each other at night in fierce battles for the privilege of mating with a female also at night.[4]

Survivability of young is improved by continual care by the mother.[4]

#

Economic impact
Mastigoproctus giganteus is regarded as beneficial to agriculture and human residences by controlling stinging scorpions, insects, and spider populations.[4]

#

As pets
This species is sold in the exotic animal trade as pets.[12]

Non-venomous, they can be kept as individual adults or groups of juveniles in terrariums with places to dig and hide. They can be fed insects twice a week, especially crickets, cockroaches and flies. Mastigoproctus giganteus should be handled gently, with care given to avoid injuring the arachnid. While they seldom bite or pinch humans, the acid sprayed from the base of a vinegaroon's tail can sting if it enters mucous membranes or cuts, and can cause eye irritation.[4]

# rain light What’s wrong with looking strong… wouldn’t you need to be strong to be a mercena...

'Strong female character' is a general movie archetype that has been very popular the last 10 years in writing
It is not exactly the looks
But the general attitude, (generally) cliche looks (i.e. trying to highlight the character has gone through 'a lot') and relationships a character pertains within a story

For most of these stories
This archetype can do 'anything on their own' and often ignore and bliss over people's comments and councils

Where it might sound empowering and cool, a lot of audience members don't want a hard cold character that doesn't even need to try nor struggle, especially without any help; whereas better archetypes utilise character flaws and address them to build character

Of course, we cannot see a character arc in a trailer.
But as a general insight of the first trailer, it seems to be generally hard to like the main character

neat basalt
#

i think most of the time, the generic 'strong female protag' is just relatively bland. theres ways to write good strong female characters (Wanda Maximoff, Jean Grey, Mikasa Ackerman (in S 1-3), etc, but all of those have extreme depth behind them with motivations beyond something rather generic

#

well i take that back Mikasa S1-2 (skip 3) + S4P2

#

season 1/2 mikasa has incredible development ranging from how she reacted when she believed Eren was dead, she had incredible development in S2 about hesitation and how she failed to protect Eren, S3 is solely about protecting Eren, and nothing about her character goes any further beyond that. She didnt even get much dialouge or input when they get to Eren AND her house in Shingashina.

#

but then S4 mikasa has decent development trying to cope with the fact her life long friend/step brother/crush is infact leaving her and she doesnt understand why. she struggles with the fact she may have to be the one to put him in the ground

#

they need depth just as much as any male protag would. the issue is male protags didnt need to be especially deep to be profound in past media, they were just "badass cool!", which everyone realized is kinda boring

#

fleabag had an amazing female protag because she wasnt perfect. she had extreme flaws and depth and actively worked through them and by extension, expressed them in a way that helped watchers relate and feel for her in ways you simply dont feel for standard badass protags

First Animal species of the day (455) :
African spurred tortoise / (Centrochelys sulcata)

#

The African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), also called the sulcata tortoise, is an endangered species of tortoise inhabiting the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, the Sahel, in Africa. It is the largest mainland species of tortoise in Africa, and the third-largest in the world, after the Galapagos tortoise and Aldabra giant tortoise. It is the only living species in its genus, Centrochelys.[3]

#

Range and habitat

The African spurred tortoise is native to the Sahara Desert and the Sahel, a transitional ecoregion of semiarid grasslands, savannas, and thorn shrublands found in the countries of Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen and possibly in Somalia, Algeria, Benin, and Cameroon. It is possibly extirpated from Djibouti and Togo.[1][6] They are found on hills, stable dunes, and flat areas with shrubs and high grass. They also like to settle in areas with interrupted streams or rivers.[6] In these arid regions, the tortoise excavates burrows in the ground to get to areas with higher moisture levels, and spends the hottest part of the day in these burrows.[7] This is known as aestivation. In the wild, they may burrow very deep, up to 15 m deep and 30 m long.[8] Plants such as grasses and succulents grow around their burrows if kept moist, and in nature they continue to grow for the tortoise to eat if the soil is replenished with its feces.[7] Sulcata tortoises found in the Sudanese part of their range may reach significantly greater size at maturity than those found in other regions.[3]

rustic badger
sullen merlin
#

Size and lifespan

C. sulcata is the largest species of tortoise in Africa and is also third-largest species of tortoise in the world.[9] The species is the largest of the mainland tortoises.[8] Males have an average mass of about 81 kg, but some males have been recorded at over 100 kg, with one weighing more than 120 kg. They have a straight carapace length of around 86.0 cm in males. Females have a straight carapace length of about 57.8 cm. Males of a curved carapace length of about 101.0 cm and females have approximately 67.0 cm of curved carapace length. Despite being the largest tortoise in Africa, hatchlings measure merely about 44 millimeters and weigh around 40 grams.[6] They grow very quickly, reaching 6–10 in (15–25 cm) within the first few years of their lives. The tortoises grow faster when there is more rainfall and slower when there is less.[6] They reach sexual maturity after 10 to 15 years. In captivity their life span is around 54 years. In the wild their lifespan is unknown but is believed to exceed 75 years.[10][6] The tortoise has no known predators when they are hatchlings or adults.[6] In fact it is believed that they are nearly immune to predators when their weight exceeds 30 kg.[6] On the other hand tortoise eggs are sought after by many predators such as numerous species of lizards and potentially mongooses.[6] In the wild the leading cause of death is being unable to right themselves around after they have been flipped onto their backs.[11]

#

Diet
Sulcata tortoises are mostly herbivores.[6] Primarily, their diets consist of many types of grasses, plants (especially succulent plants), and hay.[12] Their overall diet should be high in fiber and very low in protein. Too much protein will lead to the tortoise growing too fast, which can result in metabolic bone disease, a condition that is characterized by distortion of the skeleton and weakened bone structure and can lead to lameness, lower quality of life, and/or shortened lifespan.[13] Flowers and other plants including cactus pads can be consumed. In the wild, they have been observed to also eat plants and algae off the surface of the water.[6] African spurred tortoises are also capable of eating various vegetables such as endive, dandelion greens, and dark leafy greens. Despite being herbivores, they will occasionally eat the carcasses of dead animals. They mostly eat dead goats and zebras that have been pushed downstream during the wet season on the rivers and streams next to which tortoises settle.[6] If a human settlement is nearby they will also feed on refuse.[6]

#

Breeding

Male selection
Copulation takes place right after the rainy season, during the months from September through November with breeding actions occur in the morning.[6][7] Male C. sulcata are extremely territorial.[6] Males combat each other for breeding rights with the females and are vocal during copulation.[7] Larger males tend to always win sexual combat.[6]

#

Female nesting
Sixty days after mating, the female begins to roam looking for suitable nesting sites.[7] For five to 15 days, four or five nests may be excavated before she selects the perfect location in which the eggs will be laid.[7] Females tend to lay around two to three clutches of eggs with each clutch containing 14 to 40 eggs.[3]

Loose soil is kicked out of the depression, and the female may frequently urinate into the depression.[7] Once it reaches about 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter and 3–6 in (7–14 cm) deep, a further depression, measuring some 8 in (20 cm) across and in depth, will be dug out towards the back of the original depression.[7] The work of digging the nest may take up to five hours; the speed with which it is dug seems to be dependent upon the relative hardness of the ground.[7] It usually takes place when the ambient air temperature is at least 78 °F (27 °C).[7] Once the nest is dug, the female begins to lay an egg every three minutes.[7] Clutches may contain 15–30 or more eggs.[7] After the eggs are laid, the female fills in the nest, taking an hour or more to fully cover them all.[7] Incubation should be 86 to 88 °F, and will take from 90 to 120 days.

#

^ baby sulcata

#

Conservation status and efforts
Status
C. sulcata is currently ranked as an endangered species.[14] Studies suggest that African spurred tortoises exist in approximately 16.7% of the area where they had previously been found. These studies also show an average of 1-5 tortoises per site canvassed which indicates a rapid decline of the species.[6] The species faces threats from livestock as they have to compete for resources.[14] The main source of resource competition African spurred tortoises face is from cattle which also graze on grass. The effects of competition for grazing land is compounded by wildfires which can destroy large portions of grass land which kills and reduces the resources available to C sulcata.[15] They also face threats from the pet trade as they are over harvested from their natural environment.[14] Approximately 9000 tortoises are taken from the wild for the pet trade.[6] Other threats that the species face are habitat loss due to climate change and predators which hunt the tortoises or their eggs.[6][14]

#

Efforts
The main method of conservation has been reintroduction programs. These sorts of reintroduction programs have been implemented in Ferlo, and Senegal. These programs have seen tortoise survival rates of about 80%.[11] This means that the tortoises are able to easily to adapt back into their native savanna environments from domestic environment.[11] There are also captive colonies in several countries. Most of these reintroduction programs and captive colonies can be found in protected national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.[14] There are hopes to expand reintroduction programs by involving tortoise owners since there are more African spurred tortoises living in captivity than in the wild.[6] The goal would be to establish a breeding program with the owners where all hatchlings would be reintroduced.[16]

Okay, let’s look at God of War: Kratos has what is a stereotypically cold and hard demeanor yet he is well-liked as a character — I’m pretty sure saying that the main lead for Intergalactic is unlikeable, without even having played the game, is just another way of saying she should “smile more.” Like, honestly, how can you judge the main lead at all when the trailer is only 2 minutes long? All you can really go off on is her appearance.

  • The main lead is a MERCENARY, and alone in space… nobody is really outwardly “likeable” in that kind of environment or has to be likeable, they’re a killer for God’s sake.

# rain light Okay, let’s look at God of War: Kratos has what is a stereotypically cold and ha...

There is so much backstory and unique character design that Kratos has been given over the years

He is a ash pale painted man covered with the scars of his past, the burns of his chains - these burns are the very burns left there as a reminder of his God killing past.

That being that he lost his family and out of anger, kills the gods
The original games aren't very amazing just very simple. A lot of this triumph comes from the fact he is a god.

Instead of being a perfect 'powerful' man
Kratos is burdened with all the people he has killed, including his whole family.

And yet, being a killer, how is kratos liked? Especially with the original games?

Excluding that the actual visual character design is very unique, referred to prior.

Ealy Kratos might highlight the connotation of toxic masculinity. His story is a tragedy about the lengths he will go for vengeance and how Athena uses him to her advantage. He's a narcissistic sociopath who literally kills anything and everything that gets in the way of his goal. Eventually you realize that it costs him everything.

Now, of course, did a lot of people like early Kratos? Yes and no. Was he a villain to some degree? Relatively, however, at this point people didn't play for the story, they played for the killing of gods by a god.

This is completely contrasted with the newer Kratos. He has a new life - he is a father. You can see his flaws visually, his bandaging of his arms to hide his past. This screams questions from the audience - especially people who haven't played the originals. He has visual history waiting to be told in his game. His dialogue is slow and old, where- even though he is scared to- he still asks and uses help from others. Even if he is the most powerful man in the world.

Contrast this to Intergalactic.
We have a 'badass' bold lady in a star Lord jacket. Only thing that makes me curious, really, is why is she bold? Likely her past I am assuming.

hallow parrot

barren bear
#

She also, in the trailer, pretty much dismisses the 80s half blind character of all her council. Which of whom I actually quite liked, reminded me of an 80s NYer Mafia person.

#

Ultimately it seems like she might be going out for revenge or finding her lost group or buddies, potentially. Or going out to kill them.

#

If it is the latter, can they do it as good as RDR1? Being that, rdr1 isn't that amazing. But still very solid

#

My biggest problem with all the intergalactic hate is how we know literally nothing about it, and yet people already hate it completely. We have seen less than 5 minutes of footage of a brand new IP and people are already saying its trash lol

It's possible that companies are starting to latch on to rage bait as a very effective marketing strategy.

Pulling a sonic the hedgehog movie trailer stunt.
Feel like the upcoming minecraft movie did that as well with their first trailer

#

Just varying degrees of it across companies

barren bear
#

of course, it is bad for the end run. You won't build a large and strong community with it.

#

But why care? You getting money immediately is better than nothing

#

Of course, you'll lose some people by rage baiting
but a lot of people still want to see if "X" is truly bad on release
and by rage baiting, you have potentially created a disrupt that provoked a larger audience than if you had made a pretty tame and simple trailer

and typically a lot of thes rage-bait content have really tried putting as little as possible
either than being underpaying, large rushes by producers, etc

#

you may get more money in the long run by 'making quality'
but in today’s world, it is not about the long run with money. Painfully.
We as a western culture have definitely fallen down the wrong path

Yo @modest isle wot die hell

#

I get home, i feed the goats etc and all of a sudden i see a baby wild rabbit against the fence. So i tried to guide it in a box so i could release it since it seemed old enough

#

but it ran past me and went into our rabbit pen, into their nighthouse

#

and i see a nest of 4 baby rabbits

#

wtfffff

#

a wild male had some fun and now my rabbit(s) is/are mom(s) of some random wild rabbit

#

i dont even know how it got in with them let alone back out

Female Guppies are Pregnant simulatorTI_Troll
pregnant every 30 days gives birth to a 30-40 babies

sullen merlin
#

I strongly believe a wild rabbit made my rabbit pregnant but since i cant know that for a fact idk if they are releasable or not.

#

For all i know they just wandered there together and then my rabbits just took em in or something

#

(highly unlikley i think but idk)

distant nymph
#

Hm o:

sullen merlin
#

If thats they case they are 100% wild and should be releasable

modest isle
sullen merlin
#

But if they are hybrid wild/tame does that f up their genes? Like would that be bad if it entered the local ecosystem

sullen merlin
modest isle
sullen merlin
#

No but domestic rabbits dont have the same instincts etc as wild rabbits do

#

They literally run up to ppl

modest isle
#

True TI_Trollge

sullen merlin
#

Its like with wolfdogs, u cant release them but u cant really keep them as pet dogs either

rustic badger
#

Wilds run away, Domestic run towards, hence the hybrids would run at a 90 deg angle

sullen merlin
#

they'd split in 2

modest isle
rustic badger
#

The hybrids just maintain the distance initially estabished

#

if you walk away they will get closer, if you walk towards they move away

Btw an experiment was conducted of a species :

  • Guppy (Poecilia Reticulata)

They noticed the domestic morph (human bred) would revert back into their natural/ Wild morph over few Generations when they released into the wild

The thing is, would these rabbits have a good enough survival chance

#

eehhh well theres a lot of owls in my area, they need to eat as well ig TI_HypsiShrug

sullen merlin
#

We dont really want other rabbits either cuz keeping them as pets is not fun imo

#

keeping them indoors all the time is kinda sad imo and keeping them outdoors makes them escape all the time cuz they burrow etc

modest isle
sullen merlin
#

Id rather have guinea pigs

#

IF they reach sexual maturity

#

for a rabbit that take atleast a few months i think

#

But they already look exaclty like wild ones so.

sullen merlin
#

I just said some things that might have made rabbithorn start to hate me lol

#

But rabbits are annoying pets imo, it is what it is

rustic badger
#

Who do you think controls those 5 rabbits you have....

#

They Are A Hivemind

sullen merlin
#

Government drones? And rabbithorn is a secret agent operating them

modest isle
sullen merlin
#

i just read a few articles that most hybrid rabbits have wild behavior but the color parent of the domestic pattern. But that isnt the case at all, they have wild coloration already

modest isle
#
