The part that gets me is the pervasive idea that by obscuring the requirements they somehow made the game more rewarding, hard, or provided a challenge to overcome. When in reality the mechanic is devoid of accessibility, something being inaccessible doesn't make it hard, it doesn't make it require more mechanical or practical skill... it's just a layer of frustration for the sake of the idea of being hardcore.

Mhm. I can definitely understand Don's preference for people just playing a game and learning things for themselves like the ol' days, especially when ya got players who just wanna datamine every single little number. It just kinda sucks the whimsy out of stuff.

But the whole shtick of "just play the game" doesn't really seem to be working and, regardless, seems detrimental when it comes to testing and ensuring the mechanic as a whole is actually functioning properly. It's even worse when ya get players dumbfounded as to what they did wrong and it turns out "oh you didn't go to this zone that was invisible on your compass that you had no real need going to..." It's just clunky and feels more checklist-y than natural.

It is completelt and utterly detached from the idea of playing the game as a creature and surviving, and making decisions as your creature would. It has no basis in logic, and only a superficial connection to the gameplay. It just feels like they looked at their hodgepodge of mechanics and thought "damn how do we make an elder system out of this?" and the only option they really had was to make a checklist using their mechanics.

Since those mechanics lack nuanced outcomes or and real information to judge players from, it inevitably became a checklist. Obviously, showing the player that the Elder system just boils down to a checklist would be unwise... so hiding it seems like the only real option to make it seem more robust than the mechanic actually is.

Spino would actually be beneficial for the rex population, i mean think of it if a rex is forced to swim across a river it really isnt gonna be bothered by deinos nipping at its toes but spino could potentially drag it under the water (or whatever spino might have in its final draft) it effectively fragments a rexes territory on the borders of rivers

Wondering if some of the things removed were removed for performance purposes or because they didn't end up fitting the vision of the game:

• tall grass trails
• troodon seeing through grass in a small circle around them to help prevent running off a cliff

Oh i had forgotten those, i think it was a test of a shader on that HT but it didnt look or work great so they removed it and then that grass was replaced with this version or the version just before it, there has been a couple versions of grass recently.
