Some more advanced tasks like something to do with interacting with the strain plants (while also surviving) could work. I also had the idea of needing to pick certain mutations over several lifetimes that generally make survival harder

Mutations like faster hunger drain, less dietary options, maybe changes to your dinosaurs looks that make survival harder (like cannibal mut). Stuff like that

Tbf most of my issues with the current system is how you actively sabatoge entombent for failing prime since as most species, your speed drops so significantly that species you otherwise would have no problem avoiding now become death sentences.

Teno is a great example of this

No migrations/patrols with set food spawns would basically just be a return to form as seen with legacy. Different diets would place the players priority firmly with hunger and water, which would have a corresponding increase in intensity. Cannibalism and rotting food would still be... very bad for you. But the "sandbox" is thoroughly outweighed by the increase in difficulty from survival.

Two of the three slots would be disabled, the remaining slot would be tied directly to hunger. With very few exceptions, all food provides diet. Rotting corpses, cannibalism, AI, and certain other carnivores species would all not provide diet to carnivores...

For herbivores, its far more simple. Basically just eating plants helps your diet. I do wish there was a way to kill grazing though... actually I need to look into that, because it might be possible.

But at its core, diet would increase and decrease at the same rate as hunger, so if you are playing correctly, your diet and hunger value should always be the same.

Organs also would only provide that single nutrient.

Benefits of diet would be reduced. Growth rate going from +50% to -50% rather than up to +300%. The debuff from a bad diet would also be far worse.

This shifts the mentality of the player to be, instead of trying to keep up a good and varied diet for growth rate, to instead... solely focused on keeping their hunger up, while avoiding bad foods.

Food itself also being far stricter than current, to retain some constant pressure to find meals. Water drain also made quicker.

Well if we provide all diets all in the same small area every time (like current zones), sure, it kinda defeats the point of even having different diets. But if diets were specific to certain localities, it can be a reason for players to move about the map, just like real animals. More things to do, and more things to manage do not make the game harder, in many ways, they make the game several times easier than it was before. Simplifying the diet system down to an essential aspect of "don't eat rotting food" and having diets act as the vehicle to provide depth to the hunger bar... is really the only approach that can be taken within the current mechanic.

It creates a harder survival experience by placing almost complete emphasis on food, as your sole priority, rather than diet. You would hunt something for the sake of staying alive rather than sustaining a balanced diet. It takes the emphasis away from the benefits of diets, and places that emphasis back on hunger.

Diets do not make the game any harder, them being complicated and blatantly presented as the priority only harms the difficulty and importance of hunger. By simplifying it, and rebalancing hunger, the game becomes far more focused on that as the driving factor.
