yeah, thats when i use what i can find, for example the isles skin creator function, u can pause the animations on the creature and spin it to whatever angle u need, its helped me draw rex and dilo before, and theres sometimes free "base mesh" models that u can find on things like "sketchfab"

You’ll want to break down the face and the shape of the muzzle first. Usually a circle for the main head, and then triangles for the snout

Alright just got back home and been reviewing what you drew. I think the main critique i have is identifying your light source and making sure that your core shadows are prominent. That will be your key to understanding how textures work as well. If you’d like i can take your picture and make some notes on digital to point where your core shadows would be, light areas, etc.

That would be awesome yea I mean I original consensus was the light would be coming from the top right but I always end up shading from habit and it ends up looking weird. But yea a few notes on specific areas would be great

Here’s my little notes (i feel like an art teacher LOL). I would suggest varying your pencils. H for sketch and lighter areas of detail, HB for your mid tones and a 4B for your shadows. Another great tool to have is a mechanical eraser (one with a small head as this can help you with little details). Added a drawing that i did for texture so that you can get an idea how feathers/fur looks like, though the fur i had to draw was white. I did add some fur texture to the neck area so that you can get an idea of what it would look like. I hope this helps you out 😊

Hi everyone, I have a huge problem since yesterday. I launch The Isle (Evrima), the game starts, but I have absolutely nothing on the screen as if the game hadn't launched. I tried everything, I re-downloaded the game, nothing, I deleted The Isle and Steam caches, still nothing. Can someone please help me?

Slight nitpick but i think if the lighting is as prominent as it is to cause shadows on the horns up top the cheekbone would be less lit up like the light is top-down

Since at that angle the eye ridges and nasal ridge would put it more into shadow, unless you're doing a second light source? I do see some reflected light on the lower parts of the jaw and neck

If you scroll up a bit i was helping out someone else with their lighting (take a looksies if you’d like i included a shading sphere which i think you can benefit from). I would recommend using a tone grey background rather than a black background (you can switch this later if you’d like) to start with so that seeing your highlights and core shadows is easier. Identify where your light source is hitting that then you’ll want to find the core shadows

Im going to use a charcoal drawing of a sculpture i did as an example, but i think this is the best example of what to look for in organic shapes in terms of realistic lighting, especially since i see a lot of ridges in your work. If you’d like i can do the same thing as i did with vraptor and make some notes on what to look for

There is Infact some reflected light on the head but I think your nitpick comes from my lack of understanding of the general shape of the head. I was thinking of using a 3d model as reference for next time that way I can manipulate the light in a way I want

true. tho even the lighting from the old isle looked better than current lighting. I wish we could get back that beautiful sunset. They really messed up with the lighting being perceived like an old phone cam. Like you look up and everything around you goes pitch black, whenever you look somwhere where the sun hits the ground while youre in the shadows you wont see anything. The shadows are wayy too dark and I Sometimes cant even navigate through the joungle in the middle of the day. I shouldnt be forced to use night vision on a super bright day in order to see anything and the nightvision itsself is messed up too as you cant see anything at night rn. even as a dilo or troodon I struggle to see anything in the forest.

I went into this partially wanting to focus on La Amarga, but I still just added a bunch of my favorites instead, hence Australovenator instead of the many actual South American Megaraptors, such as, oh I don’t know, Megaraptor. I also meant to add and forgot Chilesaurus.

I wanted to balance the Pterasaurs too, with two long gliding Pteranodons, two Azhdarchids, and Kungpangopterus to pair with Dsungaripterix as the oddballs with funky features (thumbs and molars respectively).

I also didn’t realize that Ligabueino was determined to probably be a juvenile, but I still like the idea of a big cat sized Ceratosaur being the most populous predator in a remote area, with Allo and Megaraptors being less common and nomadic.

I got hung up on the idea of a G-man type, mysterious figure pulling the things of an over sized genetics lab funded by paramilitary group being a weird little guy that can cripple a man by pointing at him. “Why do the executives keep coming back from the caves under the facility looking like they’ve just seen a ghost?” “Kyle from accident prevention said he was going to spy on one of the ‘cave meetings’ and I haven’t seen him since. Like, mix a Vortagaunt with the G-man and sprinkle in a little extra Lovecraft for flavor. I’ve been replaying Half-life 2 for the first time in a while. An oversized Black Mesa style facility would rock for an Isle style game.
Or if you wanna get away from the immersive sim roots, a reptilian(tm) crossed with a “Troodon.” That would be an outsider’s incorrect interpretation.

i definitely misread Hesperornis’s six foot length as six feet in height, and I drew the Guanaco way too big entirely by accident, but every other animal with an incorrect size was deliberate, either for balancing or pure fun. Mostly anyhow. Scale is hard.

I need to draw up some diagrams of what I’m picturing for kinematic biting. Basically as soon as a prey animal is in biting range, a predator, no matter the size, would open its mouth to look threatening, auto-aiming at the prey. Hit attack, and they’ll snap. Hold attack, and Ligabueino specifically will hold on like a bulldog, costing stamina to tug-of-war anything its own size, like Isasicursor, and get dragged around by anything bigger than it, like Gronkoken. 3-5 Ligabueino could slow a Gronkoken to a crawl, but it would require actual physics to slow based on weight like that. I have NO IDEA how hard that would be, but I love the mental image of a Gronkoken breaking away from the pack and just dragging one tenacious Ligabueino away at high speed, like Wander hanging onto a Colossus as it runs around.

I imagine it would be VERY hard to actually do, and I’m nowhere near that level of game dev to actually try. Maybe someone with more experience would take a crack at it if they see though?

@strong hatch might be the wrong person to ask but your recent acro sketch is a good example. Im still practicing but how did you learn where/how to put certain creases, skin folds and osteoderms on your dinosaurs? Like especially in the neck and on the shoulder blade

Thanks for asking!! I personally use photo examples of bird legs from Cassowary, Ostrich and folds in fat from large mammals like Elephants and Rhinos!

Look for where legs bend or where skin stretches! (Neck, knees, belly, elbows, arms, etc.) I usually take a guess on how flexible that limb or digit is and that helps me determine how many "folds" I add depending on if the limb is extended or folded inward!

As for Osteoderms, I personally like to reference modern paleoart and their placement! (Like The Isle Ceratosaurus)

Hi quick question, i wondered where do you guys find references for drawing? Just by logging into the skin creator in-game? (I assume there you can see models, didn't try it yet). I have some books laying around, but the dinosaurs look way different there in-game, since the books are 20 years old from my childhood🫠

I know human anatomy, some animals's since i went to art school, but dinosaurs i did not draw in a long time. Pretty much due to the fact that in artschool only realism mattered, and after the basics, only human anatomy.

Pinterest is a good place to look. I occasionally use the in game models for skin coloration but i also have some toys that i have used as maquettes

I also use wildlife as ref images and adapt the dinosaur to fit it best

You can just slap color onto a black and white image really easilly

and was basically, just like a Livyatan

since cavima has wings similar to rhamphorhynchus, i chose to edit them slightly to make them more similar in shape to other pterosaurs like ptera and quetzal, hence the "curve" but it cannot bend that part

so if you dont want it you can remove

You could probably throw a texture on a curved plane

You can use view layers to seperate that from the lighting too, and composite can place the shadow onto the ground

You can get them from the game itself, lots of tutorials for that floating around on the internet

do not pay for anything regarding that, all programs needed are free, except for The Isle itself

So for a bit of context for the drawing;
I had just spawned in as a stego for the 5th time on Petits Pied after being jumped by troodons, pachys, and a carno the last few times. I had made it to one of the migration zones, and figured I had enough time playing, so I began to safe log, about 30 seconds away from logging off, a pack of 4 ceratos surrounded me. The kinda just stood there, looking down on me, until one bit me. I ran up a cliff as the other ceratos chased the one that had bitten me off. I tried logging off on the cliff, but another cerato followed me up. I thought I was dead, but then he also safe logged with me (I think), so I was good. I’m just glad that cerato pack knew I was fresh spawn, and was deciding to use their brains (unlike the pachy mob).

Any tips on drawing dinosaur torsos and bodies? I sttuggle to get the shape done properly

Look at references. Muscle anatomy and maybe skeletals. They vary but they’re kinda egg shaped, like bird torsos, with a longer pointy tail at the end. Same goes for legs. They’re very bird-like (which makes sense considering…)

Basically kinda break it down into a shape. It also comes down to practice. The more you draw them and recognise your mistakes in how you draw them, the better you’ll get. You’ll be able to correct your errors
