The server wipe was unintentional/unexpected and has no ill meaning behind it either. We don't know why as of yet, but we're waiting for more information as the devs have been made aware of the issue.

I think the main reason people get so upset is because the game has been out for a loonngg long time now, and to still have persistent issues (similar ones at that) and they never get fixed.
