you see them, nobody else does, the damage the hallucinations do is meant to represent the damage you'd take from the venom doing its job.
the choice was a simple DoT system or something more interesting and complex, i for one am glad they went with option 2.

Here's my timeline that I kinda use.

Apollo is formed as an agricultural company.

Apollo pharmaceuticals and engineering branch off of the original agricultural base.
They find the replicator and begin experimenting. Making dinosaurs, and the strains as well. Eventually leading to a project made to improve humanity. This project did not end well the first try using the replicator. Creating the gen 1. This culminating in the replicator, which grew sentient, to rebel against Apollo. Driving out humans using the gen 1 and eyeless.

Basically, this wacky company that is NOT build by Aliens, was once into Agriculture. Through some wacky non alien technology they made changes on plants and animals and stuff. Bam dinosaurs were created. Now those dinosaurs needed to be held somewhere, somewhere that is hidden and not accessible to the public. These people also realized they could do some wacky things by pushing Gen editing to the max and creating strains (alien looking dinosaurs with super powers). As of know most of the lore is unknown and we don’t even know what their goal is. Oh and before I forget they also engineered on humans and changed some too as well as tried to create their own human clones (and succeeded in doing so).
