Personally I think the gourd looks like a Mexican bottle gourd, but I think maybe the type of gourd actually isn’t important. We were told to think outside the box, and what does Layton have in common with gourds. Layton has whitetail deer, whitetail deer will eat several types of gourds and squashes and such, I know that because they tear up the garden yearly (Michigan here). The map border for Layton has a rather boxy shape I think. So what I’m thinking is we’re getting a whitetail map, might be Mexico, might be eastern US, maybe Florida or somewhere else in the south, personally I hope it’s a midwestern US map but anything with deer and ducks is fine with me.

If Rexio is right about it being a pilgrim gourd that could be a clue to location. The whitetail deers scientific name is odocoileus virginianus, and is commonly referred to as the Virginia whitetail deer, there were lots of pilgrims and settlers in Virginia, maybe a southern/eastern US map. That might be grasping for straws but it’s a workable theory if it is a pilgrim gourd.

The Mississippi River connects to the Ohio River at the Illinois/Kentucky border but the Mississippi River absolutely does not flow into Ohio itself. If you follow the Mississippi north, you end up in southern Lake Michigan on the Illinois Indiana border area.

Here in Michigan it’s 100% illegal to hunt for beaver, unless you have a damage control permit from the DNR. We can only trap them for fur and meat. If you shoot them as damage control you have to report the carcass to the DNR and dispose of it.

I like that part of the theory, I just don’t think PA is the final stop. If the ugrr theory is right, and following the rivers is the answer itd more likely put us in a state just north of the Mason Dixon line where slaves were then free. So Illinois, Indiana, maybe Michigan or Ohio. And hell, it could be PA, but that’s going further north and east than necessary for that theory to work.

We also have pheasant, turkey, a major part of the Mississippi flyway for waterfowl, black bear, and archery hunting is huge here too. Any of East or Midwest are prime candidates for a whitetail map with just about any of the other animals I just mentioned.

Falcon, in Michigan if a beaver is still alive in the trap you can dispatch it with a rim fire caliber like .22 or .17, that’s an acceptable method of dispatch but the method of take would technically be trapping. But we mostly use body grippers or drowner sets, 99% of the time the beaver is dead in the trap.

Goldie, way different environment. We dont have mountains in Michigan, I promise you that. The porcupine mountains in the UP are more like big hills compared the the real mountains. We mostly have farm land and mixes of pine forest and hardwood like oak and maple and birch.

Mexico would be more south than East really. Straight south East from Wa would land you in Florida, a place with gourds and a lot of water, and a lot of yet to be explored wildlife in the game. I’m banking on a swamp map in the American south, I’d prefer the Midwest but I’m not that lucky. Mexico would still be pretty cool though.
