I feel uneasy about the change from a gameplay exploit point of view, but I can rationalize is as: when you fast travel to a tent, imagine you sleep in it. And of course animals will wander up close while you're sleeping. But it's cheesy to just roll out of bed and shoot.

There's lots of ways to play the game, so go for it. But remember, the idea of hunting is the level of difficulty, why do people use bows when you can use a rifle? Artificially increasing the difficulty is a big part of hunting. In the end, just play however you want, if you want to play the easiest way possible that's fine.

There is. Grinding is the most boring way to play. If you don't care about fun and just want to show off trophies then you grind. But if you want to have fun, you hunt.

Why are handguns and muzzle loaders in the game? There is no incentive to use them. It's artificial difficulty just for fun.
