This is where mules come in. You can 4wd mules, horses are a bit more panicky. Horse starts sliding with its footing, someone is falling and getting a busted leg. Mule starts sliding, they squat some and balance until they can resume momentum

I work with horses for a living and honestly it depends GREATLY on the animals' training, breed, and overall disposition. Mules tend to be better pack animals, but horses are not neccessarily worse trail mounts than mules

I get it, I do lmao. We had a handful or horses, donkeys and mules. The horses, depite the same training, were just pickier than the donkeys and mules - and the donkey just did what they pleased. The mules were a good middle ground - esp Dreyfus.
