My cats mom lost her first litter, and like, went CRAZY for a few days looking for them (it was midwinter and my boss, her owner, didnt have the heart to just bin them, she wanted to bury them so they were in a paper sack in the freezer)
So boss took them out, let her grieve over them and then tucked them back away and it seemed to help Little Kitty overcome it

as if the efficient lil weasel didnt go out and get knocked like IMMEDIATELY when her next heat hit - before she could get her to the vet appt
