Hello guys, I'm quite new to cotw and I have problems with finding animals in maps with many trees. Because of that I only play on Savanna or Cuatro Colinas. When I watch youtube Videos, everyone is finding animals immediantly and I dont. Can someone help me?

Play through them trees aren't a problem if you find good zones and right times

Another problem is, that the animals hear me even if I sneak

If you play on a map that is more thick with brush/foliage, that provides more cover for the animals to be able to flee without being seen, however it can provide cover for you too. Running and gunning works more for open areas like the maps you said, but if you want to call animals in you will need a good hiding spot or at least not be completely visible

Once you hear a warning call, you need to hunch down or go prone and start calling them in

Hunting around water is what most people do because you can spot animals from far away when they are drinking

If you wear backpacks, they make you stand out more and the wind will carry your scent straight towards the animal so make sure that is going another direction

Don't try to track animals, find them by glasses with a binocular, look on the Wikipedia for animal drink time and the the time to an hour after they drink, also play on silver ridge peaks, its hard to not find an animals there

It’s for shooting turkeys and geese at range (like 300m) where it takes an extremely long time to kill them. I’ve shot a turkey with the 22h poly tips at 300 yrds before and it went 500yrds before even dropping to 50-75% health

At that range you’re well beyond the effectiveness of that rifle. Get within 200M and you’ll notice a difference.

Setting one up is about first figuring out where you have deer.

Next, figure out the spots you consistently have deer. Prioritize those spots.

Then, mass-murder red deer until the great leaf deer spawns

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to have all the drink zones discovered to start a grind. The only real benefit to doing this is making sure there’s nothing interesting just chilling on your map

Those pink circles were the spots I was hunting, mainly because they are more open and is generally easier to spot the stags there. I used to check the other yellow areas every 5 or 6 runs to make sure nothing big was there.

Lemme give you some tips

Hunt need zones

Look up drink times for the animal you want to hunt on the internet and set the time to that

If you go to the right lakes you will see tons of animals

And rack up the kills and the hours

Interestingly hirschfelden is quite conducive to bow hunting. The things that make people not like it (lots of cover and not a lot of open sight lines) are also the same things that can be used to your advantage when using a bow

Surprisingly, Hirsch is not as good for bow hunting as you would initially think seeing all the vegetation. Only like half of the bushes provide full cover for some reason. Great map still

I like the cover on Hirschfelden, feels a bit more realistic that you can’t use a tiny plant with a few leaves to be hidden, or stand up a whole meter away from a tree and be fully hidden. The hiding mechanic is very inconsistent from map to map though, I think it’s just one if those things that you need to get used to for each specific map.

Do I need comfort zones to bait ducks? I´ve been sitting here for already 9 minutes with 40 decoys in front of me and didnt see a single duck

In my experience the best way to hunt mallards is to put down some decoys and go to them maybe 10 or 15 minutes before the need zone starts. Some ducks will usually show up and you can harvest some. usually though, that's it for that spot with those decoys for that day

No problem. Ducks are more or less broken, which is why they are fixing them. Mallards and harlequins are still doable with some trial and error

The best way to find mallard need zones is to eyeball a duck on a lake with binoculars and that will give you the times

Ducks spook from pretty good distance so you have to spot them at distance

Many of the lakes on Layton will have duck zones, the river has a ton, but the one place on the map which I have always found with lots of ducks is the lake in the SW corner with the outpost on its shore

Yup. Heheh I just ported over to Layton to look at my map and verify that and jumped into a tent I have set up which is surrounded by ducks so when I ported in they all spooked and took off. Like 3 times in a row when I have jumped onto Layton. That spot happens to be here fwiw

Tripod is a type of blind, which makes you much less visible to animals when you are inside it

You can generally skip the story missions or do them at your leisure anyway and just hunt things. When you first start you only have the soft point ammo for the .243 which is why you are wounding everything, but the first rank increase in rifle iirc unlocks the polymer tip rounds which are really the only ammo to use for the .243 for ever thereafter.

If you're taking shots on class animals 4-6 the 7mm is one of the best for it's power that it retains at render the 300 is a little bit more flat shooting and easier to shoot on class 7-9 but the 338 has a tad more power

It's all really up to you on what you want to use

Yes really just train with the gun that you're planning to use because like there is some slight differences between most guns just if you have one gun that you really like to use practice with it and if you're planning to use a different one do that I do it all the time if I'm planning to start using a new gun

Also a tip if you're trying to figure out the distance of an animal and your rangefinders being stupid every time you spot an animal there's a marker on the map of where that animal is you can place a waypoint on that marker and it will tell you the rough distance of an animal it's a very very good thing to use when you are first starting out and not have anything to determine range

It has to be alive. That is one of the notoriously hard quests even for the picture quests which are usually harder. Sneaking up on a lynx ain't easy and you have to get super close

I think last time I did that one it took me 3 days

Don't recall the exact times, but you'll want to get into the habit of just popping around and checking multiple lakes in order to find them. Also, seemed to me like they were really easy to scare away, so keep that in mind when you're approaching the various lakes. (that could be totally normal for ducks in this game, but I don't have much prior experience with them to know)

Hunting pressure moves around. When you kill something you are removing hunting pressure from an old place to create it in the new place, so you can't actually create so much hunting pressure everywhere to delete all need zones
