it lacks dropping power on higher-class animals that the .300 can take handily, and other 4-8 rifles can take out deer and such instantly

Be aware of the trophy type for each animal.
-For nearly all deer, that’s the antlers. (Exception being musk deer, which have tusks)
-For things like bison, Buffalo, and most (I think all) antelope, it’s the horns.
-For all predators, it’s just their skull.
-For class 1 animals, it’s either their weight or a “combined” trophy type (it is impossible to fail the “intact trophy organ” check on class 1’s btw)

Hey guys, I wanted to ask for some advice for a novice, specifically about tracking and stalking animals:
I have noticed that whenever I pick up an animal's track I tend to fall in a "loop" of chasing the animal until the tracks and droppings suggest he's close and walking and then slowing down as to not to scare him until he gets further away because of my slow moving speed, and whenever I try to speed up he'll go back to trotting.
What am I doing wrong/how long are these "chases" supposed to last?

Tracking and chasing them is a very inefficient way to hunt. Trotting is their default speed to move around, and they are too fast for you to be able to keep up without scaring them away. Also they will only really stop at their need zones.

It compensates for bullet drop at certain distances. 75-150-300 m in game. If you set it for 300 m, your rifle will shoot accuratley at 300 m. With certain rifles, like the .243, it's more like 250 m though.

You don’t want to be out in the open unless you are taking a fairly long shot otherwise you are better off staying in the brush for cover

They can usually detect you from about 100 meters if you are walking. More if you run. Always gauge their behavior to see if they are aware of you or not. Warning calls = they are onto you

Be mindful of the wind, and how much noise you're making when stalking something.

Make use of need zones.

Do not aim at the head, because skull = trophy organ on everything that isn't a doe or Class-1

When you harvest an animal, take a close look at the x-ray view that it gives you

Look at the placement of heart

That's what you're aiming for

You can toggle xray and normal view with right click/right trigger, so you can cross reference with where in the outside of the animal you need to hit

That's the best guide that you can get
