Anyone able to give me a brief explanation of zeroing? I’ve just invested in the second skill point for it, realised I needed to activate it - I can now change my zero finance to 75m, 150m and 300m. Assumedly I want to set it to the nearest distance that the animal is from me, but what does it actually do?

Say the animal is 150m away and you zero for 150m, the shot will land dead on where you aimed. Had you zeroed for 75m instead it would hit low and vice versa for 300m.

Also, I find more success using the expansion rounds on the air rifle than the penetration rounds

470 expansion rounds also do a number on class 9 animals up close

There’s a few situations where soft points can be more useful. So don’t say regardless of gun

I'm completing the final mission of Layton Lakes, Werecoyote. I think I've just tracked him but the weight is too low for diamond. Should I exit the game, force Quit and re-enter until his weight and trophy estimate changes? Apparently I could have done this with Mr Black but didn't know and got a gold.

at least i had better results with penetration on those vs just splatting their skin

well, i had quite a few geese survive with hollow points (and return with a later flock while being at 25-50% health) so i switched to penetration instead and the issue got way less common 🤷‍♂️

Hey guys so im doing my rev wt grind i got 60 zones but im noticing zones that used to have buck no longer have them ive searched ALOT and cannot find any more zones anyone got any ideas

So I've completed the Werecoyote mission and respawning the coyote gets you a diamond 💎 by exiting the game, force quitting and resetting the clock to 13:58. The diamond appeared on the second spawn luckily so definitely worth doing if the weight is too low. See pics.

I put a tent behind the stand. Crawled into the tower, he appears at about 14:15 just behind a shrub. Used the caller to draw him out a bit. Crawled out to the tripod stand I set up 50 m directly south and shot him. Easy peasy. See maps for locations.

Ok here we go, I earned a perk point, debating on using it for focused shot under rifle or quick feet under handguns. Level 52 in game.

It's a great rifle. It's my main distance weapon for lions, buffalo, gemsbok, moose, elk and bears. It's especially good if you learn where the animals' hearts are.
I haven't checked out the Power Pack yet so can't comment on that.

Has anyone recently switched from the Xbox One S to the XBox Series X? On the XBox One S, the animals were all there all the time in the drinking hours. On the new Xbox they come in multiple tours and are not there all the time. Is this normal? Or is this a bug?

Animals can be considerably late to their drink zones. Especially if they’ve got a lot of terrain to cover on their way from feed/rest zones to drink zones

So if you’re at 15:30 and reset the time to 15:15, the game will treat it as if you’ve skipped time forward 23 hours and 45 minutes

Great ones are an incredibly rare spawn. They’re only on 4 species (whitetail, red deer, black bear and moose) and will have a level of 10 - Fabled so you’ll know once you see one

Also, European hare and scrub hare females are the ones that make diamond

Hi Guys, I've been looking for a way to have 2 versions of COTW running on one account on my pc. I have my current account where I'm lvl 60 with loads of trophies and I'm doing some grinds etc and then I want a second account where I can start over from the very beginning again. I don't want to loose that first account. Someone has suggested that I backup that first account somewhere, and then start over, and then I can switch between save files? I want to know if anyone has done it and if it works before I go and do it, I don't want try it and find I loose everything I've worked hard for.

Do tracks end or animals despawn after a time? I found a brown bear melanistic track which is 'very old', probably by several game hours, but it seems to have ended after 600+ metres.

it's rather simple tbh,
for diamond grinding:
since the game always aims for a balance you'd want to shoot everything on the upper half of the difficulty scale, if for example you want to grind for diamond foxes that can go up to difficulty 9 you'd want to kill every difficulty 5 and up fox you can find and hope for it to spawn more lower ones and in turn generate higher ones at an increased rate, same for a species like fallow deer that goes from difficulty 1-5 you'd want to kill all males difficulty 3 and above.

for great ones:
simply kill every male of the species you find since it's purely random when one might spawn, the more you kill the more chances to get one

From my understanding, they will (temporarily) use another nearby zone of the appropriate type until the hunting pressure has cleared up.

At which point they will create their own new zone, approximately 200m around their previous zone. Is this correct?

Used to be, if you just set up some Canada Geese feeding decoys in a field, you could hunt them until your mouse broke. No matter how much pressure was built up, even if all their zones nearby were destroyed, they'd keep coming.

Is it still like this? Because now, it seems that after destroying their zones, they just don't come back.

Thank you! Looking up the info on the rework, it shows that the ducks are now tied to zones.
So the reason their numbers kept dwindling until they stopped appearing, was simply because I shot them all. Makes sense.

Hello. I just got this game during the Steam sale this week and I'm very frustrated. Almost 6 hours into gameplay and I still can't even kill that first deer. I've tried restarting numerous times. I can spot the deer on the path. This last restart I was almost on top of it before I shot it. Yet I didn't hit any organs and it was barely bleeding. And yet while I was almost standing next to it, it took me forever to find the blood trail, which I eventually lost in the brush somewhere. Then I got killed by what I assume was a deer, though even though I can hear it and it's hitting me, I can't see it? Oh, and for some reason it's always night? The first time I tried the play the other day it was daytime. Now it's night all the time. About ready to ask for a refund but it seems like such a cool game and one that I'd really get into. So please, what am I doing wrong or what should I do to progress past this first step? I'm always stuck at "Harvest Animal" because I can never find one that I shot. Thanks

For the not killing animals issue it sounds like you are not hitting the animal in any of its vital organs. As for the always night issue, that’s a weird one. You can skip time using a tent or a bed at one of the outposts

Thanks for the responses. I have tried both free maps that come with the game. I am trying to shoot behind the shoulders, as has been pointed out in various tutorials I've watched. I thnk the tracking is the biggest issue I'm having. First off, "Turn off all animal clues" was enabled by default. So dumb. Took me an hour to figure out why I couldn't see any of the clues. Now I can but I get lost trying to track a specific animal. And now getting killed by an animal that I couldn't see caused me to stop and come here

I go for the proper ammo classes, but I also try to keep the overall weight to a minimum. For that I usually carry the .243 and .22 handguns over their rifle counterparts. I also always carry a handgun capable of dropping a wolf if I’m on a map with them. The 10 mm is my favorite for that.

It really boils down to taking what you know (the projected locations on that map) and deciding how many you want to incorporate. Spend a couple days in game observing, finding out your best zones and then make a route to incorporate them

If you own all of the DLC’s then it’s just a matter of trying each one and deciding what you like most. For me, I prefer the .300 Canning (7-9), AR-10 (4-7), and the .243 R Cuomo (2-4).

How to check if you have a corrupted save file:
Step 1: Disable cloud syncing if it is not already disabled
Step 2: Locate your save folder. it should be in this file path:

Documents/Avalanche Studios/COTW/Saves
NOTE: On the Epic Games version , the save folder will be in a different folder titled something like “Epic Games”
Step 3: cut/paste your save folder somewhere you will remember it.
Step 4: Launch the game. If the game launches successfully, one or more files in your original save was corrupted

If you have a case of save file corruption, it is still possible to recover some of your original save data, however, I cannot guarantee that any specific part of your save can be recovered, as it all depends on which file got corrupted.

First, we need to figure out which file got corrupted.
Step 1: Copy a file from your original save, delete the file that the game generated when you successfully launched the game, and paste the original file
Step 2: Launch the game
Repeat this process until the game fails to launch.

(It is possible to expedite this process by re-introducing the old files in batches of 3-5. Once you have a batch that results in a failure to launch, test each file in the batch individually to see which specific file was corrupted)

Once you find the corrupt file, delete it, then copy all the other files from your original save game back to the game’s save folder, then launch the game.
Lastly, re-enable cloud syncing if it was disabled at the beginning of this process

I highly recommend making manual backups of your save game as while file corruption is rare, it can be potentially devastating. You can never be too careful.

I did not. It was not in the achievement description and the guide I read said pictures of the paintings were not required, just interaction with the marker.

I've done some more reading and it seems that if at least one had been found prior to a certain date (2020 or so), even visiting them all in the same session again may not pop the achievement. I'd say that's what happened to me too.

In love with this game so far, but is there any way to turn down character sounds? My hunter breathes like they've run a marathon while crouching and makes leather squeaks constantly when they should be standing still. It's hard to ell what's my character and what's an animal

Or try to be understanding that squat walking for 300m is more intense than upright walking for 300m

Alternatively, if standing still and making audio, try and get a video recording of it happening and send it in with a support ticket to get reviewed and looked over.

So I just did the Te Awaroa moose mission and took and photo of the moose then as it was running away I got a vital shot on it and now there’s hunting pressure where I shot it but no sign that the moose ever existed. Is there a way to get the moose or what?

I have found maps that show where animals tend to be, but there's a LOT of coloured dots to interpret.
I have a list of each reserve and the need times for each species.

Thats a LOT of cross referencing to do for my autistic/adhd brain to process.

What I really want is the following:

A map with numbers on certain locations/areas(such as a lake for instance).
Then in the map legend, there would be a list of species and what times they are likely to be found there.

Hey, I'm looking to get some advise for my Red Deer grind. I've been told 2 different things! 1st off I was told to go for everything lvl 5 and above which I did for around the first 2500 deer and I got 3 legendary from doing it that way. Then I was told to go for everything lvl 5 and below in order to stack the bigger deer, then take them out in order to get a GO. I've taken around another 2500 deer out doing it this way and apart from seeing 1 or 2 more lvl 6s and 7s nothing seems to have changed. I've got tents and tree stands set up all over te awaroa at the lakes and other zones. So do I go for everything, lvl 5's and below, or Lvl 5's and above, or something else? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Bad wind, and about 75-100 meters is the limit in my experience. I'm usually crawling at things for bow shots (unless its larger and I have clear view - I.e. Moose near a pond... then I'll just yeet a 120m shot)

you want to have as few large males as possible. stacking diamonds makes your respawns smaller, making diamonds more likely once you harvest your stacked diamonds. you wanna keep anything at or below level 4 and shoot anything at or above 5
