Meh. I just roll the .22lr AR and don't bother with a shotgun. Takes up to much inventory. Would rather carry callers/binos/scents etc.

There’s no support for cross-platform stuffs. The only sort of crossplay afaik is between Steam and Epic games

(And that’s only allowing players to play with each other, not any sort of DLC sharing or cross-platform progression)

Not really, its like trying to use just a slightly more powerful 303 on class 9 animals. Its more of a you can but don't expect great results. Especially on cape buffalo, even 338 and 300 struggle on cape buffalo sometimes.

What I'm trying to say is, I have enough money to buy the sidearm pack or the dog. Which one should I buy?

Depends. the dog is ok but for the most part I don't use them unless I'm bird hunting, they are excellent at finding where you shot them. As for the sidearms pack the only one that's really good is the 243 pistol extremely accurate even at 250m when zeroed at 200m and only weighs 1 weight unit so you can carry the 22lr, 243 pistol, 308 or any 4 to 8 rifle of your choice, 300 and the 6 shot 12ga, medkits, sights and 2 binos in the same loadout without the pack mule perk. So it really depends on what you mainly hunt and how you hunt.

The dog is also great if you want to turn off the track glow for a more realistic feel

Define “best”

Alrighty. First thing to know:
Every weapon + ammo combo is rated for a certain set of animals (defined by a “class” system)

Only a handful of weapons (none of which are rifles) can cover all classes on their own

So you’ll ideally wanna carry multiple weapons to cover all classes

There’s 9 total classes

Higher class = bigger animal = needs a bigger gun

On the other side of the coin, lower class = smaller animal = needs a smaller rifle

Ducks are class 1. Here’s a list of weapons that can ethically take class 1:
-.22LR (virant, AR, and handgun)
-.22H
-any shotgun with birdshot
-.45/410 handgun (when using .410 birdshot)
-any bow with the smallest arrow size

Side note: a more powerful weapon can take bigger animals, but it’ll be overpowered for smaller ones. as in, you’ll ruin a trophy if you shoot, for instance, A whitetail deer (class 4) with a 338 (class 7-9)

You will get shotgun score if you kill anything with the shotgun, regardless of if the kill was ethical or not

Though, if you are into the idea of getting a DLC, I would recommend looking into the Modern Rifle Pack, which has a .22LR rifle, a .223 rifle, and a .308 rifle.
The .22LR is gud for class 1
.223 is class 2-4 (though admittedly it’s quite underpowered on class 3-4)
.308 is class 4-8 (and is a powerhouse on class 4-6)

As for the shotgun birdshot, there’s a few things you can do. One is try to somehow kill ducks with birdshot (there is a duck caller that you can use to lure them in). Another is lure deer in using a caller and go for a close range kill

You can also attempt to kill deer that are running your way

For the deer, find some cover like a bush, hide in it, then call them in

Assuming you are within the caller’s range

Usually around 200 meters. Check the caller’s description for the actual range

The main challenge of bow hunting, from what I understand, is the range capabilities. If you see a moose drinking from across a lake with a rifle, you can get nice and comfortable, range out, and take a 300+ meter shot reliability

With a bow, you don't really have the sights or the range to enjoy that liberty. You have to close the distance, which opens you to the cat and mouse game of playing the wind direction and slowly approaching/calling the animal in, in order to get within shooting distance.

As well, you (from what I remember) can't shoot a bow from the prone or crouching position, so you have to expose yourself at the last second in order to take a shot, which means you only have a few seconds before you'll likely be noticed and whatever you're aimed in at will bolt

Of course, I almost never bowhunt in this game, so I might not remember some of that correctly, but

But obviously the closer you can get the easier of a time you'll have, but 100 meters is probably a good minimum distance

You could probably just head onto Layton and head out on deer drink times. Just find a herd and practice calling them in close range, or sneaking yourself in without spooking them

That would most likely be the easiest place to start

Once you can reliably get yourself within 60-80 meters I think you're in a good spot to start practicing your shots

Herds of whitetail would probably be useful in that regard too, since you can take warmup shots on the females and smaller males without the pressure of ruining a bigger scoring kill

But if there's another map or another species you'd rather target, go for it. It's completely your prerogative

As a matter of fact I think I've just inspired myself into hopping on before work in the morning and starting to learn the bow myself

If I can pitch in about Bow hunting, I have some advice:
You can start with pistol hunting for a while, that'll get you in the habit of how to sneak to get in the 75-100m range of your target. It's noticably easier than bow hunting. Once you unlock the 4x scope for pistols you can even take shots at 150m reliably.

I like bow hunting as well, and I can tell you that I'm not happy taking a shot at more than 75 m. My norm is 50 to 75m and that's with an excellent sight (I splurged for the rangefinder sight from the modern pack) and two points in 'pumping iron', that particular perk for bows makes a noticable difference in stopping power and range for bows.

Sometimes I approach to about 30-40m range, and then I have a fair shot at hitting the heart instead of just the lungs. Makes me extra happy. 🙂

'better'... is very subjective, especially here. It depends on your goal really.

If you're just trying to make money fast, by all means kill everything that moves, smartly. (Lung shots, use right ammo, etc...)
If you're trying to get fine trophies, I'd ignore the female deer... And only get the females for hares (because those are bigger than males).

I suppose it's generally good form to not wipe out herds, that way you don't need to find new need zones again, the herd will eventually repopulate after all. By the same reasoning we generally try to not kick up the hunting pressure too high somewhere, which would shoo off the local need zones.

Yukon and Medved especially are both surprisingly good for cash grinding

Caribou and reindeer have good size herds

Medved also has the musk deer, which are smol, made of paper, and basically brain-dead (especially the females)

the southern half of Medved also has a musk deer problem. in this context, the good kind of problem.

Well with musk deer, you make a halfway decent shot, and they go splat!

Single lung with .243 is enough to make them drop

They give 6-700 cash a pop, but do keep in mind, you’ll make that up in sheer volume

Truth be told they're all a pain in the ass at first Mallards are a lot bigger and tufted ducks and fly slower so I would recommend those two to start out

And with GoldenEye getting corrected they all give about the same money wise

It's mostly preference if I had to recommend I would recommend the 12 gauge pump base game or the 16ga from rancho also good one is the 20 gauge semi-auto from the duck and cover dlc

I personally use the 12 gauge pump with the scope

Don't expect those guns to be 'fool proof', even with the Rangemaster .338 it takes skill to take down large game.
You will want to practice double lung shots, or even heart shots.
