Easy way to prevent that is by setting a marker on the part of the waters edge closest to the direction you’re coming from and stopping when you’re at 300 yards. It can be 250-300 but that depends on the animal iirc, best not to test it if you’re actually trying to get stuff done. I’ve had some spook at 300 but other wouldn’t spook until I was at 250
