Is there any downside to not harvesting an animal? Like if i shoot an animal and its a non vital shot i will usually leave that area and do other stuff but sometime later, i will find a hunting pressure in that area. Do i absolutely have to collect these animals after tracking em for a long time?

And it hits like a freight train, I killed a buffalo with it today with a headshot (out of necessity) and I killed some pronghorns at 225m

I been testing all sorts of load outs after I started running the mosin

And I found the .450 a few days ago and been testing running it for everything. Would like to just run a 22. Mosin, and .450 but it's not ethical for moose so can't 🙁

You're using a 7mm beyond it's effective range, on a target at the top end of classes it's meant for, so the result is going to be just enough penetration to get the job done. Smaller rounds with flat trajectories have a tendency to lose power at longer ranges, especially vs the top end of whatever their class ratings are. By the time the bullet travels 300m, a 7mm can't even single lung a croc unless it's a perfect broadside shot.

Larger, heavier rounds perform more reliably beyond their effective range, but also tend to have worse ballistics and require practice to learn how to compensate for their bullet drop.

You likely still would have just gotten the single lung at 200 or even 300m, if you shot a little more directly.

Penetration takes the angle of a shot into account, and can drastically affect whether a shot is a quick kill or doesn't kill at all. The Ranger .243 is a great weapon to learn angles with if you're interested in it, because it's free soft point ammo performs very differently depending on angles.

For example, the soft point ammo can still take large game at 400m with a proper broadside, but ironically also won't single lung at all on a smaller target if it's at the wrong angle. Shooting a target from behind at an angle vs if they're facing forward at an angle can also render completely different results. It's actually kind of funny, but mostly annoying, when you don't realize what's going on. So if you ever get into a position where you need to take a shot at long range, make sure to position for a flat broadside shot to guarantee no funny business.

These angle shenanigans are also why people mistakenly think expansion rated rounds are just objectively worse in all situations over penetration rated rounds. Since angle, distance, caliber, and species class all affect performance of any particular round, the content creating community has largely just shelved expansion rounds entirely because it's just easier to use penetration. In cases where your rifle will only single lung, expansion rounds will kill the animal faster than penetration rounds of the same caliber. It's just harder to use expansion rounds due to the various factors involved.

Bearclaw is really good for long range shots due to the stabilizer reducing sway, but it's a bit heavier than the other compound Bows. The razorback has identical performance, minus the stabilizer. It's lighter. Then there's the Koter, my favorite bow. It's got the same weight as the Bearclaw. It's got basically no hipfire capability though.

Between the three, Bearclaw is probably the best beginner bow. It's heavier, but it's accuracy can make shots more manageable at further distances, and it still has the power needed to skewer anything that moves.

So for finding animals, look for water sources. For Whitetail, for example, look along the western side of Layton Lakes' water sources, both the rivers and lakes, between 08:00 and 12:00.

As for killing them, go for lung shots, and try to get a dead-on shot. Harsh angles with the Ranger .243 can actually deflect instead of penetrating. I attached some photos as examples.

Tracking Knowledge is good, especially for hunting down diamonds you saw from a distance and then lost.

Soft Feet is good for bow hunting, since it let's you creep more silently. Improvised Blind can be very good if you're a more mobile hunter and don't use hunting structure, but I don't use it personally.

I'm Only Happy When It Rains is also solid, for similar reasons. Sight Spotting+Tag is my favorite skill, it allows you to mark animals with the scope. Tag level 2 is bad though. It let's you mark up to 3 animals, but it really bugs out the stats display from Spotting Knowledge, and makes it annoying to use. I don't recommend getting 2 levels in Tag.
