Suggestion: walk. Atvs have a 500m spook radius. That may have something to do with why you aren’t finding anything. Animals also tend to spook around 200m if you aren’t being careful, so walk around and take note of your visibility/wind/noise levels.

  The dogs are also great. Bloodhound for tracking, retriever for retrieving small animals like bunnies and waterfowl, and pointers for… well, pointing. Lol

as far as reading the wind in mountainous terrain there's not really too much to do outside of practice and guessing; a good idea would be to look at a couple of scholarly publications on how mountainous terrain changes wind direction by creating vortexes and having a general windmap for your hunt area as well as a wind forecast on the day of the hunt

as another sidenote, although i assume you may already know this, being in a semi-crouched position and walking by either dipping your toe into the leaflitter and pushing it out of the way before a gentle footfall to reduce noise or placing the outside edge of your foot and heel down first before rolling the rest of your foot down is the best to reduce noise signature

the added not is conduction often means that thermals result in warm air constantly rising within that layer, so anything above you in altitude could very easily smell you in those layers

vice versa, cold layers with descending air mean animals lower in the valley smell you very easily

adjust your approach accordingly for the constant wind/thermal layer you're fairly sure you're in
