Not bad at all, and certainly not hate-worthy, though I do feel The Halo Effect lacks that little something extra that would make them properly comparable to Dark Tranquillity or old In Flames. The stuff I've heard from them has been "nice tunes, can like this" but nothing more. DT on the other hand is a band I love, and I also hold old/mid In Flames in high regard.
I find it fascinating that a band consisting of five ex-In Flames people (one of whom is also a very important member of Dark Tranquilliy and has been for their entire carreer) sound nothing like In Flames (granted, I haven't heard any In Flames post... 2008 except quickly concluding that the album after A Sense of Purpose was trash), but sound a lot like Dark Tranquillity. :p

I saw Dark Tranquillity live last year and i was quite surprised when they said that they had never played this song live before that tour. It's one of my favourites by them but I guess the Damage Done album has so many classics that some are bound to be left off the set lists. They didn't even play it on the tour for that album though, which is odd.

I really liked his work with Sonata too, they went fast downhill soon after he left (not necessarily related).
I like how "intellectual" Insomnium are - one's a professor and iirc the vocalist is the head of the museum in their hometown.

Falkenbach really is a hidden gem, it's unfortunate that the project barely shows any signs of life the past few years. There was a box released including 2 of the old demo albums from the 90s which was really neat, but so far one can only hope if there is any future album being released.

Some bands are more productive than others, and I'd rate Kalmankantaja as being among the more productive. They've released a string of generally high quality albums since their debut in 2013, with this one from last year being the 25th and last for now (though I expect more is coming fairly soon).

There's a few bands I really like who all started as some sort of extreme metal (primarily death/doom) and then evolved into something else (be it gothic metal, progressive rock or various other stuff) - Anathema, The Gathering, Paradise Lost and Amorphis to name a few, and also these guys in Tiamat. While their early death metal stuff is good, 1994's Wildhoney is probably their best album (and that was the album that properly marked their change of style). 2003's Prey is probably their best known, especially this song:

It's fairly common that bands release their best stuff relatively early in their career and that the later stuff doesn't quite reach the same quality (though of course this is far from an universal rule). Some bands, on the other hand, start out good and then just keep getting better as the years pass. Draconian are one of those, with their latest album to date probably being their best.

No, just that one album (and I will be very surprised if they ever decide to release more). The members both have other project though, and Gallowbraid (the solo project of Jake Rogers) is also among my favourite bands/projects. That's more folky black metal inspired by Agalloch and such bands. He only released one EP under that moniker and no more is coming since "he's not really into that kind of music anymore" I think he said in an interview I saw once.
Rogers is probably most well known as being the vocalist of Visigoth, another very good band who play more traditional heavy metal inspired by bands like Manilla Road (one of the guitarists in Visigoth is the guy who play the solos on the two Caladan Brood songs with "proper" guitar solos).
The other guy in Caladan Brood also has an excellent solo project called Ered Wethrin, and some other bands a well.

So I reckon Judas Priest aren't exactly unknown, but for some inexplicable reason most people only listen to their new stuff, when they used to make amazing stuff like this. Granted, their new stuff is also great, I think Defenders of the Faith is my favourite Priest album (unsurprisingly, it was reeased in the best year of music - 1984), but overall their early stuff is just in a different world. I'm not sure there's a lot of singers who can pull off the stuff Halford does here.

Manilla Road should be a familiar name to a lot of people who like metal, being one of the most influential US power metal/epic metal bands. While they're by far most known for their 1983 Crystal Logic album, that's far from their only album, though. The albums following that one had a more trashy sound, like 1988's Out of the Abyss. That said, the album having a more trashy sound overall doesn't mean songs like War in Heaven would fit right into Crystal Logic and I wouldn't call it trash metal in any way, just influenced by it, like this song shows.

Shylmagoghnar is a one-man project from the Netherlands (used to be a duo for their two first albums). While not in any way black metal (but rather some form of melodeath), the project is often popular among fans of atmospheric black metal (I found it first on youtube either on Lightfox' channel or on either the Atmospheric Black Metal Albums or Black Metal Promotion channels). Atmosphere-wise I'd say it's similar to a lot of atmosblack, but musically it's much closer to bands like Noumena, Be'lakor or Insomnium.

I know we have some Agalloch fans here. Watching Agalloch live back in... 2013 I think made me find Fen who were support for them on that tour. More black metal than Agalloch (wouldn't give Fen any other genre moniker than "atmospheric black metal", or "atmosblack/post rock" for their earlier stuff, while Agalloch just have a lot of black metal influence), but Fen are also very atmospheric and have a lot of postrock influence in their music. This song is from the 2014 album Carrion Skies which is probably their best album.

The Morningside aren't as well known as they should be. They have released all their albums on BadMoodMan Music which, in addition to having a great name, is a rather good record label. If a band's on there it's probably worth listening to. They play death/doom, comparable bands include Agalloch, early Katatonia, Woods of Ypres and their label mates in Mournful Gust. This song is among their calmer ones, they also have some more... agressive stuff, especially on the Letters from the Empty Towns album.

I was introduced to Swedish Nocturnal Rites with their mid-00s stuff, which was fairly generic but catchy and quite good modern power metal. Little did I know then that they had just recently changed style from a much more classic sound on their earlier album, and particularly their 2nd album Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a proper gem. Eternal Champion's debut album The Armor of Ire came down like a bomb in 2016 and they quickly became one of the biggest NWOTHM bands. They continue in the musical tradition of US epic/power metal bands like Manilla Road, Omen and other such bands.
I can also recommend the author whose stories inspired both name and lyrics for Eternal Champion - Michael Moorcock (who himself was involved with Hawkwind in the 70s among other musical involvments).

The Gothenburg style of melodeath is pretty well known due to bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and At The Gates. There were more bands doing that particular style of metal though, including fellow Gothenburgers Sacrilege, who released two albums before calling it quits when their drummer joined In Flames in 1998. Cult of Luna has performed the two best concerts I've ever been to (also a very hard thing to rate but one left me with a very clear feeling that this was the best concert I had ever seen and the 2nd one left me with the very clear feeling that this was the best concert I had seen since I saw the same band play the same stage 6 years earlier. Finster doesn't necessarily mean dark. It's more like sinister, grim or anything but dark. Because dark = dunkel in german, describing the missing of light. Whereas "finster" has a lot more meanings to it.

We all know it's rare when a cover is better than an original, especially when the original is made by none other than Bruce Dickenson himself. But when the cover is made by the musical genius Jari Mäenpää, well... I'll let you all give a listen. This is a track off of the Wintersun Time II supporter bundle (which was one of the best purchases of my life), so as far as I know, it's not on YT, and certainly not on any music streaming platforms. What also makes this cover all the more incredible is taking into account that Jari is missing half of one of his lungs, and is still doing this song beyond perfectly.

Could well be. Gardenian (Niclas Engelin's old main band) did sound fairly similar to in Flames though, and Jesper Strömblad is who he is, so I'd expect it to sound more similar to In Flames than it does.

I tend to split them in early (lunar Strain/Subterranean), mid (Jester Race/whoracle/black ash inheritance), new (Colony/clayman but those are different enough to split, really), and then all sorts of newer new.
Could easily put Jester race with the early though, or take Jester -> Colony as one batch, it's a gradual change in sound so nothing's way off what the previous stuff was.
Clayman also came with a much more polished sound which is as important a change as the purely musical evolution.

I am 99% sure this is the best song released last year. Alan Averill from Primordial does guest vocals on this track and it suits it well. I didn't expect Winterfylleth to top The Green Cathedral from The Dark Hereafter, but this song is even beyond that level.

Not exactly "viking metal" but playing "chill" sessions in Valheim to Ulver's Bergtatt and Kveldssanger is a damn good experience (still great big ups to Mr. Jarlestam, but after 1000 hours varying a bit is natural).
Also, thanks devs for making me listen to Amon Amarth, knew them just by name and not exactly my genre (grew up to a differend kind of death metal), but i learned to appreciate 'em a lot (vocals crush bones!) and very fitting to Valheim "heavy" sessions.

sorry, missed this msg, very good album, i enjoy both listening and playing it, the last four albums are awesome and it's almost ridicolous to rank them, but if i must it would be 1.ITP 2.Human 3.Symbolic 4.TSOP, obviously all in high S tier eheh. Many friends would rank it first though (including my guitarist) for cleanness of production, maybe true, but i missed the """"sloppyness"""" of Human and ITP, feels more natural.

yup, agree on liking best these two, the new one you first posted is a lot more "mild", surely well produced, but it feels "rounded up" to a more """"pop"""" taste (many """, i don't hate pop music or nothing like that, still have a lot of "weird taste" for extremes in music, and "weird" mix-ups). I like "From darkness" as it's well raw/unrefined, "Raven" has more evolved elements but i like it more than the new one, "metal" part reminds me a lot of late 90's melodic death wich i like a lot, and in "folk" part hurdy-gurdy sound is well defined central, love that instrument and struggle to find good clips to hear it, also female vocals are used in a more "raw" and/or "haunting" way than the new song. Anyway, all added to "the list", thanks a lot for sharing 🤟

agree, that would be the "melo" part, big thing in Sweden, but even in Florida scene things started to change towards classic metal melodies in mid 90's, just compare 93's Individual Tought Patterns to 95's Symbolic for instance, even more in 97's TSOP, it's almost a heavy metal album but with screaming vocals and odd-time signatures

ok, won't post because this time there's really no metal in it, but Igorrr just released a new video, ofc. 100% bananas, worth a watch if you like really weird stuff (and with two creatures that i find very Morgen and Gjall like as a bonus)
-# edit: after a couple listens i feel a bit meh about the music, i mean not bad but misses the usual chunk of weird genere-mix (no metal part, no other weird influences, almost no vocals), flattens it up imo and feels a bit dejavu (eg early 2000s Aphex Twin).. still big ups to Igorrr, overall one of my fav "new" music acts
