i leveled some of the skill to 35 for polearms, just because the block seemed nice, but in 95% of cases you don't need to block, so the polearms is a bit too situational, when you're facing stronger enemies and the block is important. Also i don't like that it is 1.5x times slower than sword

shields are less effective in high difficulties, their block armor isn't multiplied together with enemy damage so you need over 50/100% more max health for a successful block

try to dodge more instead, jumping a draugr's attack and hitting them with sword or mace secondary on the way down works well

Might be Steam Cloud sync problems (most common). Valheim moved heavily to cloud-based saves, and sometimes the cloud and local files don’t agree, which can make the menu hang on "Please wait".
Try this: Close Valheim, restart, open Manage saves.
If it still hangs, try temporarily:
Steam , Valheim ,Properties, General, disable Steam Cloud
and launch the game again.

Can also be a corrupted save-file.
Open C:\Users[username]\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

Check the worlds or worlds_local folder.
Restore a .old backup file if needed.

If this doesnt help you need some real expertise, Cause honestly Im not.

Yeah, they gonna hurt unless you use your shield.
Once you get into bronze/troll they will hurt less.
But even then shields are a good idea.

Single star can damn near one-shot you in leather.

With skeletons, though, I think it gets to a point where they insta destroy them, with Stagbreaker.

Just hope you never run into a 2 star of those.

remember when you swing if you hit walls your damage goes way down, so the flint axe alternate attack will sometimes be the best moves. early club doesnt have an alternate attack so it’s pretty bad in tight spaces, id choose axe personally. best thing for crypts early is bear paws if you manage to kill a couple bears
