I've learned in ML not to talk to Hugin when he shows me a skull or a mine. That 'Poof' is a much better indicator of them than ticks or seekers.

there is also abandoned tower full of seekers next to it, might even be 2 infested mines inside 10m area 🙂

Do I have to be on a snow area with moder or sum?

Then your mountain probably has no silver.

lol 3000+ hours into the game and we've had the funniest moment...

New server. We build a small town next to the Black Forest for mining conveience. We're rocking flint spears and the like.

Our first journey into the forest, we stumble on a 2 star bear ("Boy that tree-stump sure is funny looking... shit... run run run run!") which chased us out of the woods after mauling 3 vikings to death. Said 3 vikings made several attempts at retrieving their bodies and each time they fell victim to this demon bear. 2 of the original 3 headstones are still there along with a veritable cemetary of bodies with flint weapons.

It gets worse. The damned thing started roaming into our village! It was like a horror movie, you just heard your buddy getting mauled by the bear and there was nothing you could do. We were laughing so hard as this blasted bear wreaked absolute havoc on our tiny viking society. We eventually relocated.

fossil delta
#

I have yet to run into a 2 star, only 1 stars. Of course, now it would be easy for me to fight it with my current gear. Maybe my next play through... Still, thats a great story. Definitely something to remember.

Having to physically pull them onto land like I'm using a harpoon while they drain my stamina more or less for no visually apparent reason whenever they'd like doesn't seem simple to me

The only mechanics are "click to hook, hold to reel" -- very simple compared to other games.
And the stamina drain drops quite well with levels.

merry pebble
fossil delta

Yeah, it gets better as you level it. Works fine for the first two biomes once you hit 20 or so. Considering you can level up pretty quickly just casting and reeling in, you get to 20 pretty quickly.

Use feasts for fishing. I do 2 feasts plus a stamina food. The best one I have at the time.

Good HP in case I have to fight, good stamina for catching fish.

serene hollow
# rugged mango 226

Hardest part to learn is to not sprint everywhere. Run normally and have a full stamina bar when you enter a fight. Makes a huge difference. I see so many people sprint into combat and have 30% stamina or less when they get there, swing 3 times and be out of stamina, then they can't block or roll and get mashed.

cedar stump
warped flower
serene hollow
#

Also don't run from the seekers they are hard to outrun because they fly. Better to circle normally and fight, don't sprint but in real short bursts when needed to avoid a hit. I will admit if you get into a fight with 3 or more seekers and you do not have an atgeir or something for AOE it is pretty hairy at times.

rugged mango
#

Running/Jumping just uses up way too much stamina. I can't even get through the Mistlands without stopping ever 30 m.

serene hollow
#

Make both potions that help. The ratatosk for 15% movement speed (offsets your armor slow down if you are wearing padded) and the jumping one, can't remember the name. Both of those help with the mistlands a lot. The running one lasts for like 10 mins too, it is nice.

silk token
#

it’s by the coast, maybe take the portal with karve materials and sail around, then you can scout the island from the water and it won’t feel like a waste of time, sometimes there’s structures along the water you can see and hit later

cedar stump
#

we could just equip our old silver and make that short run to get our gear back and back to boat

silk token
#

if it were me, if you had backup gear, I’d make it a rabbit hunting trip and just hunt along the way to my body. But I feel like there’s a high chance you just die in your back up gear lol so yeah going by sea would probably be smartest. Bring portal materials if you don’t want to sail back

#

Maybe bring stone and wood for a campfire so you don’t have to do it unrested when you get there, and also don’t have to bang rock and alert everything nearby

cedar stump
#

and then no more being careless and starting to feel 'confortable' in there always just to end up getting caught by surprise haha

#

I also never thought of always bringing wood and stones to re-apply rested, wouldve been nice in the swamps.

silk token
#

It’s pretty necessary, you also gain skills faster when you’re rested

#

I play no portal so I’ve done a lot of thinking ahead and planning lol

cedar stump

silk token
#

man i have NEVER been THIS uninspired to build a perma base somewhere before... technically there's a spot in meadows right next to plains swamp and bf, close to clothing and trader, but its just like.... meh i cant describe it.

#

it's not far enough to be particularly close to mistlands or ashlands, and if i explore its just swamps and ashlands everywhere.

fossil delta
#

I'm thinking of trying something a bit different my next play through. A series of small bases rather than just a main one. I've kind of done this before, but I still have had a main base. Next time I will still have a main base in that its where I go to have my character sleep. Other than that, I will try to have 3 or 4 that I can go to for smelting and crafting, and just be more spread out across the map. This is to help with getting resources some where without having to do a ton of sailing to bring them all the way back to a main base in the center of the map. Obviously this will also mean I don't get to take ores and metal bars through portals, so a fully vanilla default game setting.

#

It should also help with taming, in that I will be more likely to be able to take starred animals to one of the further out bases, than I am to get them all back to a base near the center.

silk token
#

i kind of do little bases in each biome, or at least the ability to repair and smelt so i can do basic gear upgrades while i gather more. but a good base base is important to me where i have the bulk of my materials and cooking, crafting, brewing, etc

#

otherwise you're so spread out like well i gotta go to this base for carrots then back to the other base for copper then to teh swamp base for chains it's silly

fossil delta
#

You more or less do that anyways. If you have to take everything back to a main base. Just portals make doing that with most things easy. I will probably make my sleeping base also be my food prep base. Thats a lot of mats to be spreading out across several bases, when you only need it all at one. So I agree on that about foods. Just hauling ores and metals, and only those, to a main base at or near the center, gets to be a bit much. Ashlands is actually what is making me think to do this. Since I pretty much have to make a base there to process the metal, and tame the Askvins. So I may as well spread things out a bit for at least the plains and Mistlands too.

#

Thanks to portals I can jump between them in just a few seconds.

silk token
#

i think my main strat is really just dont build or gather so much that i cant take it with me or leave it behind, like there's no meadows base, i make a BF base by copper nodes, then i MAYBE make a perma base dependign on seeds or just a swamp iron farming/smelting base, and/or another base that's next to traders and plains and preferably a quick sail to mistlands

#

like currently i have a small BF base and i went straight to a spot by traders and plains, but it's just a gross spot im nowhere near good swamps or mistlands and not not that far south im entirely like this seed is sub-par and i dont want to play it lol... maybe im spoiled by good seeds or bored of the game idk

fossil delta
#

So it sounds like you do a series of small bases as needed by default. I've been making it necessary to take everything back to a single main base. So I am talking about no longer doing that, and spreading things out more.

#

So my "main" base will be where I worry about sleeping and making my foods, and whatever I need up until I go into swamps. Then from there, I'll just make a small base wherever its most convenient for me to sail to, to do the needed processing and crafting for those metals.

#

Is breeding boars worth it?

gray sand
#

Worth is subjecthive to the individual.
Only you can make that decision.

fossil delta
#

Depends on how often you run around and just kill boars.

#

I don't bother in single player, or when playing with my wife. We kill plenty just running around.

gray sand
#

I bother in SP when I get to main base time. But prior to that I do not.

silk token
#

but if feeding them and breeding them is super fun it's not a waste of time

fossil delta
#

I've only ever had a need to do it on servers with more than just my wife and I. Mostly, because most people, don't have the time to just be running around hunting. Its more time saving to set up breeding.

#

Mistlands. Black Marble my beloved.

fossil delta
#

Black marble does seem to be markedly tougher than just stone. I have the same problem with it as I do stone, too much of the same look. All black is just as ugly to me as all white. Monotonous.

gray sand
#

I am a simple man.

fossil delta
#

Fortunately there are ways to break that up, but it just adds to how much mats you need to make a place look good.

#

Thats probably a big part of why I usually do only one main base. Even with all my free time to play games, I don't want to be spending it making base after base after base look appealing to me.

silk token
#

the problem with the current seed is that the "best" place to build has uninspiring weird terrain that's too low and too high and surrounded by gurgling deformed toads

fossil delta
#

I want to see these gurgling deformed toads. They sound interesting. 😄 😄

silk token
#

ive killed most of them but they keep coming back

#

hm maybe im thinking about this wrong, maybe the answer is a plains base next to meadows not a meadows base next to plains... but im on hard and wearing blueberries...

fossil delta
#

Yeah, spawn proofing areas can get tedious, and give the game enough time, they destroy it all if it isn't behind walls.

silk token
#

its also hard to leave my first base, i accidentally made it so dang cute and the spot is great

fossil delta
#

Blueberries don't help make it easy. When I do go into the plains, I do it in bronze, and after I have it all at max lvl, which is usually lvl 3. Thats just for default settings. Not sure how I would handle it on a harder setting.

neon steppe
#

i have the worst luck with infested mines, another one with 0 cores

silk token
fossil delta
#

Yeah, I have had 4 or 5 mines like that this play through.

#

We still have plenty of cores now, but it took a bit longer than usual.

#

Which is fine, I just look at it as building up more mats for going into the Ashlands.

#

Considering how thats so much fighting, etc... you burn through arrows, meads and foods more than any previous biome has.

#

People who think Mistlands is hard, you ain't seen nothing yet.

fossil delta

In Ashlands, even the land hates you.

neon steppe
#

can't see and terrain is annoying you gotta be jumping all the time

fossil delta

You only think the terrain in Mistlands is annoying, In Ashlands parts of it kills you, quickly.

neon steppe
#

i do well in mistlands for like hours and then i die 1 time and instantly die 4 more times for some reason

cedar stump
#

tired of waiting for my buddy to get our corpse back so I kinda went and looked at content/stuff I havent seen, Queen fight looks kinda spicy, same for fader x)

gray sand
#

I just realized if I end up liking battleaxes it will be moot this run because I sort of have to switch to mage 🙁

fossil delta
#

The Queen is definitely a new kind of fight. Now I can fight her and not die, but it took some time to learn.

cedar stump
#

now I just want to properly do it! skimmed thru ashlands and queens on a game with cheats just to see it all

fossil delta
#

Seeing leads to understanding what you need to know and do, so you should get "there" faster now.

#

We still have a lot to figure out about Ashlands to really "master" it.

#

But thats the fun part for us.

cedar stump
#

that looks like a very rough area hazard wise

#

really thought I was seeing sea serpent over there hahaha

neon steppe

neon steppe
#

can't find the cores so i just destroyed my black forge and took cores from it for eitr refinery 🧠

#

after i've processed all my sap and soft tissue i destroy it and build black forge back 😄

fossil delta
#

One thing to look for, if you can even see them through the mists, is 3 of those sharp, tall, rock formations. But you can so rarely even see them, its not really much help.

fossil delta
#

So once you have 5, your in business, so to speak.

cedar stump
#

oh dang you need 15 of those things, surely we died close to a mine! surely that 2 star seeker was guarding some mine entrance

fossil delta

Starred seekers do tend to be near them, but the real clue is if you run into more than 2 at a time.

cedar stump
#

was only a 2 star with a no star seeker

fossil delta

If your attacked by 3 or more, something is near by. Likely a mine.

cedar stump

well with those heads up, tomorrow when we go recover our gear by sailing to a closer shore to our body, surely all goes well 😄

No idea, I am only used to seeing a number like that when I am using the target for target practice.

Unless you mean the 30 second warning for the next auto save.

Since that freezes your game for a second or two. Even on my PC.

neon steppe

Ulvs and Gierhaffa so far both recover from stagger before you can get the first hit off.

fossil delta

What staggered them before you did your first hit?

gray sand

Parry.

fossil delta

Ah. Yeah, well I never use parry, so not familiar with timings, etc... As for Battle axes, they are like sledges for me, very situational.

#

Even though I am using Demolisher more and more often. That knock back is very helpful, even if its not a lot of damage.

gray sand
#

This is why I have held to the "reduce by 0.1s" because it does not need to be much faster. Just a smidge faster so you can actually follow-up your own staggers.

fossil delta

Only stagger I do is through damage.

Apparently there is hidden stagger time limits based on which attack you parry...

silk token

it's a weird fake out stagger they do, i think i remember it happening consistently on the 2nd time you parry them

but yeah that can trick you into attacking XD

gray sand

It's usually on the heavier attack. Trolls do it too.

#

If you parry the two-handed they recover almost immediately.

and then they switch up their attack-yeah was just sayin the troll thing

yeah they tricky. i honestly don't battleaxe them, i parry with shield and then use a pickaxe XD

Windup is too slow vs. Golem, Ulv, Gierhaffa.

I can follow-up with every one-handed weapon and even the sledge.
Battleaxe is, as I have been advocating, just like 0.1s too slow.
Which is the problem.

silk token
#

ohhhh ok

#

ok but i think you're battleaxign in a sub-optimal way, the axe is meant to initiate and chop, if you're parrying it's because it's a ranged mob or something, on easier difficulties you stagger most things very easily with the first hit, and on VH don't even thikn about parrying so why are you parrying

gray sand

Indeed.

silk token
#

arite well keep trying the battleaxe i promise it's good, just try swinging it a little more instead of playing defense

gray sand
#

I'm going to keep trying it, because fair shake.

#

Just depends on if they list of un-followable grows or not.

fossil delta
#

Yeah, when I use the battle axe its to be aggressive, and to kill 5, 6, 7, 8 fulings. If I want to block, I'll have my shield in hand, along with another weapon. Like Porcupine. Or the BM sword.

silk token

doesn't fire like... KIND OF stack?

fossil delta

Skeletons don't matter with Jotun. They are so weak by the time you have it you just destroy them with a hit. So poison wouldn't even have a chance to work on them.

tacit crystal
coarse gust
#

it might be a case of twohanded weapons all giving 1 adrenaline for secondary attacks. without taking into account that the atgeir is a big aoe and the battleaxe is a quick stab. as opposed to the twohanded swords massive single target thrust

subtle vessel
#

Is there anything else besides porcupine that does blunt and pierce damage?

silk token
#

trinkets are also supposed to "reward skilled play" which hitting a the secondary of battleaxe or atgier is about a 1 out of 5 as far as difficulty. 2 hand sword secondary should be a little more, but it's really all about the staggering and if you use either of those abilities you're going to most likely stagger your target for +5 adrenaline. i imagine they wanted to balance it to not be a massive adrenaline farm, imagine you get 5 just for using atgier secondary, and then 5 for staggering the thing you hit, and the low damage of it, that sounds like a stupid busted adrenaline farm weapon

Also are battle axes good now

subtle vessel

Ty

tacit crystal
# subtle vessel They better than atgeirs?

Atgeir secondary is surely easier and has AoE and higher stagger multiplier, but being pierce damage which more mobs resist than slash damage it can suffer bit from that. Plus only the secondary attack has high stagger, battleaxes have higher stagger for both primary and secondary attacks.

silk token
#

from personal experience if you're an atgier main and you land in ashlands you're going to die a ton

tacit crystal
#

To be specific, atgeir secondary has 6x stagger multiplier, battleaxe primary has 1,5x and secondary 4x (effectively 2x of weapon damage).

silk token
#

and there's no ashlands atgier but there are ashlands axes. but to be fair you have the 2 biggest battleaxes advocates here XD you'll find people who think atgier is the only way to play the game too

tacit crystal
silk token
#

certainly SOME of that is experience, but.

i was also trying to fight charred soldiers with the atgier which lol.

tacit crystal

Atgeir secondary surely is like a cheat code for quickly making room by pushing and staggering everything around for a moment.

Me, at present giving them another try - everything fine until Mountain when I run into enemies that I can stagger, but the windup on the first attack is 0.1s too long so I cannot follow-up on my own stagger.
Yacko, at present - Just hit them first instead of trying to parry.
Me, at present - name a single other melee weapon that cannot follow-up on its own parry stagger window?

You cannot, because there is none. Hence the problem. And not a large problem. Just a 0.1s problem.

Surtling Cores? Yeah 15-17 is probably my record as well.

polar osprey

I did 4 chambers prior to the record breaker for myself. Those 4 chambers yeiled 5 cores. Then 17 from the next!

I need a seed that's got an insane amount of plains on it with like 300 tar pits for farming tar

#

And prolly 9000 stone pillars

tacit crystal
sly oyster
#

I need to increase just stone and tar drop rate then

tacit crystal
sly oyster
#

Doesn't that adjust everything though?

tacit crystal
#

Yes it does for all drops. There is no specific sliders for certain materials.

sly oyster
#

I don't need 5000 resin and bone shards. And tbh I don't need mass ingots either, I don't mind mining them because they aren't needed in insane quants

#

Just the foundation of a dock build used two boxes of stone

polar osprey
#

I don't like the resource slider to be honest. Wish it was set for stone and wood only.

tacit crystal
#

One can just focus on mining stone and tar then and let every else materials to be in that case.

polar osprey
#

If I end up using resource slider I always increase difficulty to make it fair.

sly oyster
#

Yeah there was a mod I used before and made it do stone, wood , and tar at 1.5x. but it's 5 years outdated. Maybe it still works though

tacit crystal
#

Sliders for specific materials would be a good idea tbf.

pliant hatch
sly oyster
#

Building mats specifically. I don't wanna just no cost or spawn my build mats, but even medium sized builds can just drink mats like water

#

And while I gripe about building, maybe make the stone cutter and work bench have a larger radius 😂

fossil delta
#

I'd be happy if they just increased the stone cutter radius with the bench it's connected to.

#

That way 1 would likely cover my entire base.

pliant hatch
#

Except that upgrade is a late game addition, making it a bit useless for increasing the range as most players usually have a fully develloped base by then.

fossil delta
#

Which upgrade? Doesn't the workbench increase with each level up?

pliant hatch
#

Workbench does.

But the upgrade to the stone cutter comes after you defeated the Queen. Which means it that one would increase its range, it's pretty late in the game, which makes it quite useless.

tacit crystal
#

There is no upgrades for stonecutter, afaik. Artisan table gets an upgrade after Queen tho.

fossil delta
#

Yeah I have not noticed an upgrade for the stone cutter. I could easily miss it.

#

That's why I said go by the work bench it's connected to.

pliant hatch
#

The stonecutter isn't connected to any workbench.

fossil delta
#

You don't need a bench down to build one?

pliant hatch
#

YOu know, perhaps if you use a bit less confusing wording, people would actually understand what you mean.

Because up to now you've been giving the impression that the stone cutter has an upgrade, then imply that the stone cutter upgrade can be done when there's a workbench connected to it and now you're asking if you need a workbench to build a stonecutter..

So what the hell do you actually mean?

sly oyster
#

Needing the workbench and or stonecutter to build a house is doo doo mechanics

#

Lemme just build

#

I'd even take pre making the blocks lol, but then you have weight problems

fossil delta
sly oyster
#

Sounds like the best solution is to just make the radius bigger, then no worries no cry

pliant hatch
#

Stonecutter is not connected to any workbench.
It's a seperate crafting station.

#

Just like the forge, the black forge, the spinningwheel, the artisan table and the galdr table are separate crafting tables.

fossil delta
#

You need a bench to build a cutter, correct? Sounds connected to me.

pliant hatch
#

So in your reasoning the cow is connected to the corn?
After all, the cow's shit is used as fertilizer to grow the corn.

#

The only things connected to a workbench are the Adze, chopping block, Tanning Rack.

fossil delta
#

I take it your having a bad day, so I'll just leave you alone for a while.

pliant hatch
#

I'm not having a bad day.

I'm trying to explain in my simple 4 year knowledge of the English language to you who've been a native English speaking person for your entire live that there's a BIG difference between two things being being connected to one another or where one thing is a requirement for the other to be constructed.

#

But I guess, with my simply 4 year English education I may be mistaken as you are the Native English speaking person, thus you are always correct and I am wrong.
After all, people who speak fluently English after having it at school for only 4 years aren't as intelligent as one who's been speaking it their entire life. Right?

#

So next time you want to post something here, do it in Dutch, German, French, Polish as I speak most of those languages. As well as partially Italian, Spanish and Indonesian.

Because there's more than just English in the world. But that's something a lot of native English speaking seem to forget; hence why they think they know it better as those had to learn that language as a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th language.

gray sand

@fast stone Food is the most important stat in the game.
It effects how much you can block/parry.
So when you enter any new biome, one of the first priorities is getting the new food running as it will make everything in that biome easier.

marble orchid
#

Honestly building brings me more terror here

fast stone
#

you can parry?

marble orchid
#

How am I supposed to place a bed near a fire if I can't put a fire indoors

gray sand
#

If you want details, food sheet is pinned in this channel. It has a Configurations tab for quick reference as to what you should be aiming for per biome.

fast stone
gray sand
# fast stone you can parry?

Blocking just as they are about to hit you blocks for more and staggers the enemy.
Note: Tower Shields cannot parry.

gray sand
marble orchid
fast stone
#

im running towards eikthyr now

pliant hatch
#

You can put a fire indoors.

But you need to keep some distance from anything made from wood if you got the fire hazard modifier on.

You also need to build something to disperse the smoke. A chimney may do, but make sure you close it somewhat at the top so the smoke can go out, but the rain can't get in.

gray sand
fast stone

i build like a toddler draws

gray sand

There was one glorious patch where boars required Carrots, and it was awesome, but they undid it immediately... 🙁

fast stone
#

if it starts storming after i summon eikthyr am i cooked

marble orchid
gray sand
#

Define "didn't work" because it takes multiple days.

marble orchid
fast stone
#

i think u have to drop it no?

#

idk how taming works at all i want a pet boar

#

stress relief boar 🙁

gray sand
#

Yeah no. You need to cage them, drop the food in, and then wait for days until they tame themselves.
If you startle them it resets their progress.

#

And you also need to be in radius or the taming pauses.

#

So most people just train their sneak for a couple days while waiting.

fast stone
#

do u need to move around while sneaking to increase sneak

pliant hatch
#

It's 30 minutes as long as they aren't alerted (exclamation mark over their head). That's technically one Valheim day and one Valheim night.

And best way to make sure they aren't alerted, put up a wooden wall and hide behind it.
Don't use a fire nearby, because that would alert them.

gray sand
fast stone
#

now im omw to eithyr fr

gray sand

Also, random -- given how they changed Elder buff, I'm honestly going to say it is better to rush Elder and then slow down and use his buff to get the mats from the BF.

fast stone
#

what do tamed boars do, can they help u?

gray sand
#

They are mainly just a reliable material source.
As you can breed them to get more.

#

Then kill some off for meat/leather.
Then breed more.

fast stone
#

oooo

#

do you have to feed them to keep them alive

gray sand

And they are cute for people who enjoy the farming sim aspect of this game.

Oh, you will have those.
Some howl when they're young, some provide you with food even if you don't kill them, some are big and fluffy and you can ride them - but not fight from them - and some look cold and slimy, but seem to be great fighters too. At least, when they're wild.

Overall there's enough pets you can have and even pet. And when you pet the pets, they will tell you they love you.
And create off spring if they're well fed too.
