Don't forget shift+click with the hoe, which tries to flatten to the level of the ground it is aimed at vs. the default behavior of flattening to the level that the player is standing at

strange arrow
#

ye that's great for making slopes

#

not needed in levelling, i find it complicates the process more to try using that and you can end up with weird offsets

frigid gust

It does, but I find it most useful when I'm forced to stand at a weird location to flatten something specific, especially Mistlands farm plots

i encompass more of that these days as well in building, but knowing you can create that perfectly flat stable base for any amount of rooms/floors is invaluable

just start off flattening a small area, until you can pan the camera down and see how flat it is, then you can read the ground and make it align flat after using the technique i described

they're automatically generated for every enemy.
1-star has x1.5 damage, x2 health and x2 drops and drop chances (not affecting trophies and some other drops)
2-star has x2 damage, x3 health and x4 drops and drop chances (same rules)
if you cheat in enemies with levels higher than that, all 3 of those stats even keep going up indefinitely, but it won't show any stars below their name and they'll use their default model and size, since the size and models of stared enemies are all custom-made.

tepid prawn
#

To conquer swamp properly I recommend building a treehouse which will be raidproof pretty much if build high enough until Bonemass is killed (enables drake raids)

pliant hatch
uncut bough
#

Sure but i like killing them on even terms

#

Almost all creatures in swamp doesn’t and the constant rain debuff means that parrying a few times will deplete my stamina bar so fast

pliant hatch
#

But on a serious note:

Using either a bow or an AoE weapon like the sledge works quite well in the Swamp. It's quite easy to kill leeches with a finewood bow and wooden arrows because they don't have that many HP at all. Trick is to keep out of the water.
If you won't use a bow, but stick to melee instead, use the sledge or even the stagbreaker as it will do quite some damage the moment you hit the ground with it. Just be aware you may have to drink the antidote every once in a while.

As for the rain, there's two kinds of mead helping with stamina regeneration; while using two HP and one stamina food helps too.
And finally, don't move into the swamp using heavy armor, but wear the light one instead. Whenever possible, a full troll set helps a lot because of the sneaking bonus you get from that one.

uncut bough
#

Like i can take on dragur, i can take on leeches alone or in a small group

#

But it happens so often that either abomination appears and me trying to kill it while running away ( under the rain), more draugur joins the fight, making the fight even more desperate

#

Or just a horde of draugur with 1-2 star enemy attacks me

formal kraken
#

For swamp I stockpile fire arrows and go hunting for roots.

uncut bough
#

And yes i am using level 3 troll armor rn

#

Maybe when i get them roots i will craft the rooty tooty armor

pliant hatch
#

I went into the swamp a few days ago, using a new character who'd just defeated the Elder.
By the time I got to the swamp from the BF, I had already encountered several Greydwarf Brutes, as well as some 1-2** Greydwarves, skelletons and in the Swamp I had to deal with leeches, a blob, several draugr - of which one ranged - and eventually an abomination.
First thing I did each and every time I got attacked, retreat to dry land; using the terain to my advantage, using building ruins to my advantage and matching my weapons to my opponents.

The most important thing with the Swamp is to adapt to the environment. Yes, stamina regeneration will be more slow, so don't go fast. Stop, look around, listen, sneak if you have to; use the dry spots to move on and have a bow equipped to be the one doing the first hit.

When you do have to cross water, equip the bow and hoover over the water all around you to see if anything pops up. Even if you don't see the leeches yourself, the moment you move your cursor over them, their name will pop up.
After that you will pop an arrow in them; they will plop and you can cross that part of water without a problem.

If you don't want - or can't as some players have problems with the bow in this game - do that, bring a hoe and start leveling the land around you.
You may attract Draugr with that, but at least the leeches have no chance to get to you. 😄

#

And added to that, the hoe is an excelent first "weapon" when you are going to fight Bonemass. Not as a weapon itself, but to prepare the surrounding area, making it a lot harder for some enemies to attack you off guard.

#

And finally a positive note:

If you're able to get through the Swamp, you'll notice that the mountains and the plains will be a lot easier. Mistland, however, will be harder again; but in general it's quite similar to the Swamp, just without the low stamina regeneration.

strange arrow
#

as well as crafting the best armor you can, which for me isn't the most beneficial focus, is maintaining that good food, especially for swamp and mistlands as mentioned

#

turnip stew MVP for swamp

#

if you already have a carrot farm and a boar farm you can be on carrot soup and sosig and breeze through with poison pots, just collect the bare minimum to get kitted for the boss, and hardly spend any time there

#

then once you have plains armor and food it's easier to go back and do a proper iron run and get stocked up

all assuming you want to avoid mistlands, if yr brave/crazy xD you can farm it there as well

Tbh iron armour is about the worst armour to make from an economic stand point

#

Iron is like the most used metal in the game, and if you level your bronze armour before going into the swamp like level 3 bronze armour it's pretty much = max level root armour

#

And if you quickly defeat bone mass you get his forsaken power which pretty much makes the entire game on easy mode

#

This is probably more true with coop mode, you can take turns spamming bone mass ability

#

And your iron is more scarce

plush umbra
#

it's a good bit of work for a set that has barely any more defense than troll hide armor while also slowing you down.
i never make bronze or iron armor, but imo bronze is the worse deal of the two

#

(though the bit about iron being the most used metal, yea, objectively true, and iron scale armor does cost a whole lot of it.)

paper marsh
#

I'll say tho I feel like a lot of the more economical weapon options are often ignored

hollow crag
#

You can prob wear your bronze armour maxed into the mountains

regal spoke
#

I'm in the plains (normal) with level 3 iron helm, root chest, and troll legs. Level 3 iron buckler and level 3 bronze mace.

paper marsh
#

Still I do tend to get bronze helmet over troll helmet, since it has slightly more armor and no slowdown. Unless there's an absolute abundance of trolls then I'll just go for troll hood

#

Also troll hide holds up pretty decent in mountain as well imo if on normal difficulty

regal spoke
#

What are you considering economical for weapons? I was thinking spear for sure. But that's not slept on

paper marsh
#

I usually skip rag / deer / bronze / iron armor

paper marsh
#

Most the craze I see is just sword/atgeir/mace/frostner

#

Flesh rippers are also hella cheap to upgrade, granted the skills for it aren't used much outside of that weapon

#

Knives I don't know the exact economy of but I'd assume them to be a tad cheaper than other stuff? Very good too

regal spoke
#

Spear versatility is really hard to match. But perhaps knife is another rather economical piece

paper marsh
#

eh I feel spear is usually passed up for a bow

#

Understandable since bows are very very OP, but I feel like spears get undervalued

hot fern
#

i normally bypass the crude bow in favor of spears

regal spoke

I build spear as first weapon every run. Bow requires scraps that I'd rather put into other things

hot fern

saves roughly 15 leather scraps

regal spoke

Exactly

paper marsh
hot fern

i do

#

but i think the most worth are: flint, fang and carapace

#

purely because of their cost value and the speed you can max them at

#

plus, spears are great against both trolls and lox, also gjalls if they get close 🙂

paper marsh

Fellow spear enthusiast I love it. Spears against Gjall is a ton of fun

paper marsh
#

Bark spear is really nice for wolves

hot fern
#

do it,. the iron spear is legit too 🙂

paper marsh
#

not bad for dragons either, although I think most people don't like to use spears on mountain

hot fern
#

that's the one place i've found they do kinda slow down kills on drakes, having to lure them closer to get a spear off

#
  • risk with throwing it off makes it tough
paper marsh
#

ye, it's not too bad once you get used to it tho

#

Plus nothing as satisfying as throwing a spear at a drake then running in, grabbing the spear, and propelling yourself into the air to get the melee mid air kill

hollow crag
paper marsh
#

I also think fully levelling is a bit excessive, especially since you can't do that until Mountains. Getting it to lvl 2 is pretty snazzy and costs only like 21 hide. That's 5 trolls and then you'll prob have leftover to make one piece lvl 3. Hide is wasted if not making troll armor. Copper can just be left unmined if not needed

#

Also 91 sounds high. I'm assuming that's including the useless cape?

#

All up to preference tho

#

First time I played I joined a server with friends and got slapped around by trolls so troll armor wasn't rly an option for me there

hollow crag
#

Also like I said bronze armour you can probably use till mountains, troll armour you probably don't want to do that

cobalt canyon
#

Personally I like maces, there just doesn't seem to be much that's resistant to blunt and there're a few things that are weak to it

It is a great armor to mix and match with, though fire enemies are your bane.
I've used it all trough the mountains and well into plains but I went all out on bow, so it is a different playstyle.
Lure enemies to were you can plink em from safety and make sure you can get away if it is getting dicey.

opal prairie

just in case it's not clear: backstab isn't a multiplier for hitting an enemy from behind, it's a multiplier for hitting an enemy while it has not aggrod yet.
additionally, it has a 5 minute cooldown. even if the enemy calms down and you hit it unaware again, it won't trigger a backstab hit again unless the 5 minutes are over yet

rain flare

plush umbra

well if you wait long enough after the first backstab and let it calm down, you can do it more than once

Also, black metal sword, frostner and silver sword are the 3 go too weapons

And Deathsquitos buzzing, in the shimmering light.

Through fields of flax, and barley tall,
We journey forth, heeding nature's call.
In search of blackmetal, for weapons gleam,
In plains' vast expanse, we chase the dream.

Beneath the open sky, so wide and clear,
We face the challenge, without fear.
With Yagluth's shadow, looming near,
In the plains' embrace, we persevere.

Oh, what wonders in this open land,
Where beasts and foes, with strength demand.
In Yagluth's domain, we make our stand,
In plains' wide reach, with courage grand.

So let us roam, with spirits high,
Through birch and barley, 'neath the sky.

digital iron
#

Sorry guys, Im going to intervene in your conversations and state my opinion on abandoned pois in this game. I have been playing this game for more than 2 years already, must have to say abandoden castles and pois should have more story telling elements to them

#

Like the little mountain hut does in mountains, i love it btw!

#

You know the small little details in mountain hut made out of core wood logs? Theres campfire, chair, table and some stuff left over like someone actually lived and thrived there once

heady parcel
#

To be honest, I love that there is no story to them - they're just there and it's up to you to imagine whatever happened there. My fave is the survivor hut built in a ruined tower in the swamp, that one is awesome.

digital iron
#

Not sure about thriving but atleast lived

heady parcel
#

Edit, dammit the hut on top of a tower in the SWAMP, not the plains. Sigh...

north umbra
digital iron
#

So to return to my point, towers in black forest seems too empty and shallow

heady parcel
#

They say someone, at some time, built a tower here, and they're long gone. Does it really need to say more?

north umbra
#

I like the black forest towers a lot, one of my favorite structures

digital iron
#

Just ruined castles, nothing else. I don’t know, what could be lore behind them? Maybe since greydwarwes are overprotective of their territory they slowly destroyed them piece by piece

#

Ruins in meadows seems to be way better shape than in black forest

heady parcel
#

More trolls in the forest

heady parcel
#

First time I met a troll I hid in a tower and the thing tore it down entirely just to get at me

#

It was like a week after release, I'd managed to make deer hide leathers and a stagbreaker and felt immortal, so I walked into the forest. STOMP STOMP STOMP <PANIC> "Oh a tower I'l be safe there!" <lots of crashes> corpse run

#

Anyway, that scenario alone can probably explain a lot of damage on structures in the black forest. The trolls have notoriously poor impulse control and a black belt in Smashing Stuff.

#

But a serious answer to @digital iron - I personally believe that the lack of lore behind the traces of civilisation you find in Valheim (ruined villages, towers and fortifications etc) is very much part of the charm. The lore to find is in what you can read between rune stones and the actual remains you find. Shipwrecks, graves, walking dead. The mystery is part of the appeal, when everything has an explanation the mystery is gone.

#

Now, something I would very much like to be able to do is to raise runestones of my own. Make it stupidly expensive (in stone, surtling cores, black cores or whatever) but make it possible. Even in my offline worlds I'd love to be able to raise stones to brag about my deeds.

frigid gust
#

Do keep in mind that the game is not finished... they're still adding core content, the biomes and weapons and enemies and so on. From what I gather they are at least planning on a pass or two over the overall "polish", and that would definitely include lore, runestones, etc. Need to remember that this is still a prerelease game, even as complete as it feels, and has a lot of work to still occur 😉

I am suffering from success rn, i stockpiled too much food and when I created spice rack for the cauldron, i cant even craft enough to do away with all these raw ingredients

uncut bough
#

Yea but it is bad when my 3 chests of cooked food is already filled with cooked meat

#

I shouldn’t have grilled so much boar meat and neck tails

#

At least cooked deer meat is recyclable with carrot

#

Cooked boar meat and necktail shrimply arent

frigid gust
#

That's why I usually don't cook that stuff until I need it, because when you get too much of it you could just overcook it into coal and get a useful product

sage dock
#

yeah better you never cook neck tails.

#

not like you really have to worry about spoilage. that died in the ass long before the hearth and home update

pliant hatch
#

You can use the cooked boar meat and necktails as "base food" combined with honey the moment you aren't out exploring or gathering resources; but working at your home base instead.

It'll give you some HP and stamina to deal with most issues at your base and even enough to defend yourself, should that be needed.

The only other option is to wait until you're able to craft a special device that becomes available after getting something from the mountains - I think - in which you can turn anything you don't need into char coal.

sage dock
#

You mean the obliterator?

frigid gust

Downside of the obliterator is it's like 20 things to get a single piece of coal, whereas overcooking meat is 1:1. But it is a way to get rid of it.
