Got really interested in the hardcore mode of the game, but then I learnt that the game has no Steam achievements for me to know what is relevant or not regarding what I would be able to do in it. Achievements usually gets added at 1.0 for Early Access games.
And yeah, there's TONS of challenges YouTubers and Steamers do.

Playing HC is a challenge in itself, as it includes that you won't be able to use the map, or the portals. And once you die, you won't be able to get resurrect again.

And considering the game gets quite a lot harder the further you progress, especially with some monsters being able to "sneak up" to you in a certain area, the challenge is real.

When I test controller bugs in valheim. I use a Ps3 controller

the game have controller settings
windows have controller settings
your controller might have settings between Direct input and X-input. (X-input should be the correct one)

My friend and I are discussing the adventure of doing a portalless/mapless run in the future. Has anyone done such a thing? Any useful tips for how to survive long-term?

A lot of people do. I tried it myself, was pretty fun

No-Portals:
Takes a lot more patience for sure though. Travelling takes longer so you have to be careful about what things you wanna bring in your inventory, base location, etc. Usually gonna need a lot of bases to reduce travel time as you expand into new biomes
I really enjoyed that I also had to be careful with my weapon durability or bring extra weapons. Somehow it added another layer of survival that I found interesting

No Map:
This one can be tough. Very immersive, very cool, but man is it easy to get lost. Good to learn some navigating tools like navigating based on the yggdrasil tree in the sky, or making your own handdrawn (or computer drawn) map to have a decent idea of whats where. Charting out my world was honestly pretty fun. Also making paths is so useful

My first experience with no portals no map was... interesting. Because it was with a few friends on a world that was also vhard difficulty, max raid rate, 0.5 resources, hardcore, along with a bunch of self-imposed challenges like no bow and atgeir or terrain walls

Whenever I go to swamps at night wraiths feel pretty common. It's not really about searching a lot of swamps, just find a big one to wander around in at night

if you want to skip progression you can probably just use devcommands. However, chains aren't THAT useful, you need them for the iron cooking station and the black metal shields. Then it's just decorative pieces, you don't need an abundance of them

My point being, hunting for Wraiths is something you only do once and then that's it

Another option is let's say if you made the cooking stand that requires chains, you could break it down to make a forge upgrade, upgrade your gear, break down the forge upgrade and turn it back into a cooking stand

That's a technique a lot of people use at a later stage of the game with another resource.

But honestly, just look in some chests in crypts or go to a swamp at night. Chains shall be found

I mean, trading skips part of the game, which is resource hunting. Nothing stops you from trading for a Cultist Trophy and skip having to go look for them, even after clearing 5 caves.

I wanted to build far away from the spawn area so I set sail across the seas and found a place I liked and didn’t explore much until after I built my base

If you do ultimately decide to run around biomes you're not geared for, I'd recommend just activating the eikthyr power and running through trying to avoid as much stuff as you can. I haven't personally fought viles since they were added semi-recently, but I doubt they can keep up with you if you don't stop to fight them
