But considering you can even have them following you while you sail.... yeah, having wolves early on works well.

Killing the elder is probably much easier and quicker than trying to get iron without it, it's very RNG dependent
Can try clipping through crypts, or finding iron deposits in the dirt in swamps (very difficult without a wishbone, might need stagbreaker)
Or make your way to the Mistlands and dismantle a bridge

In all that time you'd have done the elder and just gotten the key to do it the "right" way anyway

There are 2 kind of entrances for infested mines. When you learn to recognize them afar you can find them much easier.

Big group of seekers (usually 3-5) is at least one thing that tells when mine can be close.

Climb as high as you can and you might clear the mist and see for a grouping of peeks (4 if I'm not mistaken).
There should be a mine there.
The other mine entrance is in an abandoned dvergr building with 3-5 seekers around and mostly on top of that building.

When you climb higher you can see further. Certain looking cliff formation is one indicator that tells there is other type of infested mine.

It's kinda like 3 spikes next to each other pointing at different directions.

BRUH I had my portal inside one of the infested mines right outside the entrance cause I cleared all the seekers and put a workbench down which is supposed to stop enemies from spawning but I tp'd there and found 2 seekers and a seeker soldier on top of me

totally normal, had multiple mines with 2-3 cores last bunch of mistlands i explored, then i stumbled upon a couple that had 8-9 each... they can also have zero (total) if you're unlucky enough

There is currently no timeline for that. At best we might guess it appears during next year but we will see.
There will be smaller update before DN, however. It's said to be a "combat update" which improves slope combat and there is a teaser for new ||armor set|| and seemingly new ||fist weapon|| too. But that is also said "not anytime soon".
