Thundering one just does most damage because of the chain lightning, then it's the dyrnwyn with it's higher slash damage, third is the root one which some may argue is better because of the rooting effect even if it does less damage

Vs. Single target there's a threshold where Bleeding does more damage.

It's not necessary at all, I live in an area with very harsh conditions and I got a few tips to drive safely. Stick to the right lane during snow storms as there will be tracks without snow where the cars are driving. Drive slowly. Keep a good distance between you and the car in front for good visibility and because it takes a lot longer to brake. Be extremely careful during lane change as the snow in-between the lanes will create resistance on one side of the car and make it easy to lose control. The black ice is much more likely at traffic lights and stops since the heat from the cars will melt snow and create a thin layer of ice, so brake very slowly and ahead of time. Always make sure you remove all the snow from your vehicule before getting on the road, for your safety and others.

Yeah, just having someone tell you to steer into a skid and not lock your brakes means nothing until you can actually try it. My dad would let me drive around on the lake when I was quite young.

Exatly the same thing for me, lost control once after hitting a bump in the road before a turn. Knew exactly what to do from a lot of practice, knew not to hit the brakes, as it would just lock in your direction, actually accelerated towards where I needed the front to be and to stop the back's momentum from making me do 360s

The reason for studded tires, especially in places like Oregon, (I'm in Portland myself) is because our temps fluctuate so much that a lot of the time we get sheets of ice underneath the snow and the constant refreezing and elevation changes makes our roads pretty dangerous for travel, no matter their experience.
