yeah all these advice are valids, my only complains is, a game is there to be fun and challenging you and make you feel rewarded... I just feel like Mistland is the first biome in valheim that, it just not fun nor rewarding for very long stretches. Which is a shame because the music and ambiance is great. even the enemies are fun, but it<s really the mix of visibiliti+lack of stamina+being one shotkilled or ambush by enemies you didn<t see coming. that really makes it poorly designed or not tested enough.
#general
1 messages · Page 78 of 1
It is supposed to be much harder than the previous biomes
My second best tip to survive the mistlands is to wear the root harnesk, the pierce resist makes seekers and ticks much easier to deal with
Agreed. It's possible to be harder, and still fun. Mistlands does not do that.
I find swamps more annoying when it comes to movement.
Mistlands.. yeah.. but vision (or lack there of) is a much bigger threat.
I think swamps annoys me a lot less, since you can outrun most enemies, compared to mistland + you know where to go, the amount of time I died, because I ran into a wall and lacked the stamina to just jump around is frustrating haha.
that<s great advice! thanks!
Personally if i see an enemy in time, i will plan my escape (if i'm unable to fight) according to the terrain that surrounds me. In mistlands however you are more often than not gonna see the enemy until it's too late to plan an escape. That is where problems begin. Cause then i find myself panicking and that's where the stamina goes out.. And that will often end in death.
Being 'wet' is arguably the worst debuff in the game. However, being forced to exhaust your stamina for navigation only to encounter Seekers, Ticks, or a Gjall in Mistlands really sucks.
Even without being in imminent danger, just traversing around Mistlands is a game of managing stamina. I can see how that can become annoying for some.
It mentioned anywhere when that swamp hut update will be added?
If I had a complaint about the mistlands it is not the terrain, visibility or enemy, it is how long it takes sometimes before you get the right amount of black cores and then all the gear is unlocked at the same time. But before that other than new food you do not get any stronger for a while
Then there's ashlands.. and dying to lava projectiles mid-jump over lava.
second to last blog post said that it would "be with us during the fall", no idea how reliable that is
Uhh, perhaps the heavy gear but the light armor and the weapons that require refined eitr still take a bit after. Maybe it's the way we play things differently but I always end up getting the workbenches before I refine any substantial amount of eitr.
You can use the same 5 cores to do everything, so as soon as you get 5 you unlocked everything
'The fall'? The fall of what? Political collapse? A civil catastrophe? Some kind of accelerated entropic effect?
You know full well that means Autumn in colonialism.
Just realised you said "unlocked", you're right. But getting fully geared up with those new armor and weapons takes a bit of time and exploring still.
the fall of when i inevitably trip over the mess of cables my desk has become
(which i predict is gonna happen sometime from october through november)
The Fall Off by J Cole
By the time I get 5 cores I usually found more than enough soft tissue and got enough carapace to craft everything I want, the rest of the items you need are easy to get or come from previous biomes
I think it would be neat if the mistalnd stations only needed 3 black cores each instead of 5. I had a similar experience, had a lot of materials but few stations to craft with. I know you can ‘cycle’ the stations on an as-needed basis, but Im not a fan of doing it that way.
I’m really curious what the board game update will bring 🤔
I'm about to start a new world. Can someone give me a pretty cool seed, without explaining why it is good. I want to go in blind.
this is not a good seeed becuz i just made it up but its 78943573298445
The game is capable of creating random seeds by itself. Thanks for the effort though.
np
This is one of the have in my personal reserves!
6Rm3FXrCc3
Thank you!
yo anyone wanna play?? im pretty new at the game and could use some assistance
anyone want to play on our server ?
TIL that V rising, goat simulator and satisfactory were mostly developed in skövde.
Just like valheim
So basically, the key for huge videogame success isn't just hiring Swedish devs, but it's actually hiring Swedish devs from skövde
Yep, Skovde is genuinely the game dev capital of Sweden.
Can I join on open server?
There aren't any 'open' servers per se, but you can have a look in #1024264966712340510 to see if there are any you might want to join.
Its one of them.
Mornin gjall 😄
Mooooooornin
Mornin
Dude the option where u can turn continuous music off is so nice. Like sometimes music sometimes not
Valheim miniatures when
When the board game comes out 😄
will it miniatures?
there are miniatures in the goard game 🙂
can I introduce Age of Sigmar's Vindicators into it?
The minis looks crazy good by the way
@umbral fog speaking of the board game, did you see the new update??
Neck and wraith minis 🎉
do someone wanna play?
People in #1024264966712340510 wanna play
Okay thank u
Looks like they have raspberry planters in the board game 😂
Heh, the irony.
No? 👀 Will as soon as i get home tho 😁
It’s pretty neat stuff, we’re also getting a second boat mini, which I’m super excited about
500% funded for the board game 😄
But why don't they just finish Deep North!? 🤡
They are too busy buying horses for that 😄
Wish they would stop making some stupid video game and finish the board game already 🙄
Because Derek says. "everytime people mention deep north. the developers add 1 day until release"
only 12 months to go 👀
People complaining about release don't even actively play the game or have stuck around. Deep north is 1.0 let them cook for 2 or more years and enjoy the ride before it's over.
Deep North is the final biome, it's not been confirmed if that will be 1.0 yet.
Not sure where 2 or more years is coming from either.
I'm like 120% positive they said deep north would be 1.0
I'll gladly search rn for the statement
Sure, go for it.
And 2 or more years for the biggest update yet makes sense
Scroll down or watch the video from the dev at GDC talks
Deep north is connected to 1.0 and im pretty sure I can find clips from Ashland's walk and talks where they reaffirm this if that's not enough to convince @marsh sentinel
Anything can happen that's life for you but considering this is the final biome and they want to "go out with a bang" it makes perfect sense considering all of their statements
yo i got a question everytime i log into my friends server its plain and has a disconnected thing on the top left corner ive done everything but when he logs in the server its fine
Is he hosting a dedicated server? Unless he's got that set up and running, your friend needs to be playing also as he's the server host.
If he is running a dedicated server and that's happening, he may be shutting the server down for whatever reason.
yes its been happening even while hes playing on the server also it shows his character on the map but theres no buildings literally just meadows with no trees nothing im not sure if its a dedicated server because hes on xbox and im on pc but before that happened everything was ok
Unless consoles have gotten a lot better in the past few years, it's probably just a private host server then. Probably just some connectivity issues. I'd re-try joining first if it happens and if that doesn't resolve it he could try to re-launch the server.
I've had the same issue a few times, usually just takes a re-launch on someone's end to fix it.
But you shouldn't be able to play on his server unless he's already on and loaded into the game.
ok thank you appreciate it
The people who want more content are the people who got bored with the old content?
Shocking!
Mornin gjall 😄
yoooo
I love Valheim
As we all do 😄
Morgen gjall.
Deep north is most likely not 1.0, there will be some global rebalance/Qol before 1.0. #general message
And ‘chievements!
i cant wait to see what those will be 😄
Afternoon gjall.
Is there any server I can join to play?
surely some in #1024264966712340510 😄
oh thanks buddy ❤️
😄
depends on how much time we have to balance it.
but would be nice to re-balance so we drop deep north + QoL rebalance = 1.0 at the same time
and this of course in a 1.0
looking for any chill persons to start a server with, nothing wild just chill and play
#1024264966712340510 Has chill persons to start a server with
man am I blind
surprisingly LOT of people seem to not notice it 😄 dont worry about it
@vivid field I hope you can get out of the way of the hurricane that's coming your way, now. ~.~ Florida is getting hit again very soon. Be careful and let us know you are safe, as soon as possible.
Lol, yeah I'm safe. Gonna go back and turn off the electricity tomorrow, and hunker down with the parents inland
Finally got the house aired out ready to move back in and finish cleaning, and then Milton arrived for round 2
Jesus, 175mph winds. Stay safe.
Yea I’m in Florida hurricane season is here 😅
it went from a cat3 to cat5 very quickly
Yeah, that's a nasty, nasty hurricane.
😭 stay safe all my floridian friends
It'll probably drop to 130-140 by landfall but it's still going to be a terrible storm.
My buddy Pablo - that I met here, funny enough - lives on the northeast coast but it looks like it's gonna peter out to a Category 1 by the time it makes it to his place.
When I lived in Vegas we used to get these monsoon storms - we watched this great big blue metal trash dumpster float down the street... it did a full-on Kool Aid Man through this wall.
Water is frickin dangerous.
@dense abyss look up Asheville North Carolina Water System ~.~ They can't even hold water in their reservoir atm. The Hospital is trucking water o.o yeah hurricane water is freaking scary, especially when it hits areas that haven't been hit in a century ~.~ I'm grateful that we have maybe nine days of calm here, and I'm terrified for anyone who has to brave Milton.
and Helene JUST hit us!
@gaunt ingot I hope you're getting out of the way of Milton. 😿
thank you, luckily I'm PROBABLY not in the direct path, we just got some after effects of Helene, but ESPECIALLY for those people in the DIRECT path it's like SHEESH, can't catch a break from mother nature!
They said Milton is a Cat 5 atm T_T and the swell may be as big as a foot coming in. Please be careful.
yeah it looks BAD, and I will thank you!
... I would swear that Valheim Draugrs and Project Zomboid zombies use a similar sound.
There's still a few shop bought assets in the game.
the winds I'm honestly not too worried about, lots of trees keep the worst of it off the surface level, at least in my area, although yeah, high chance of getting the central eye directly overhead + storm surge + flooding after already saturated ground
@vivid field yeah but they showed a place where it's going to hit that has a 20ft wall of debris in one roadway. If the wind picks that up, it's going to decimate the neighborhood.
of course stream jets and all sorts of "worst case scenarios" and their required circumstances keep piling up
yeah the walls of sand are 100% from the flooding though
Interstate is backed up for several miles of people trying escape atm. They showed it being bumper to bumper.
@vivid field It was a pile with cars, boxcars, furniture, sand, and trees. o.o
Heading off for a bit. Plz be safe irl 🙏
Can’t help but wonder how many necks it would take to kill an Asksvin
Mornin gjall 😄
Morning!
800 at least
Unless an askvin dash can kill 50 at once
Then it would be thousands
Yo. to find the chest burried in the meadows,
in the "viking boat", where in it do I dig?
You can dig up the whole thing or use a sledgehammer and find where the damage comes from in the ground. You might be able to use a wishbone too, but I’m not sure about that.
wishbone is what you're suppose to use to find them 😅
Spoilers 🦴
Are you really 'supposed' to use the wishbone when you most likely encounter them before you've finished the Swamps?
Most players won’t know there’s a chest until they walk near one with a wishbone equipped if they haven’t heard from someone else.
Afternoon gjall.
I might not be here most mornings I've got some new responsibilities at work and in the mornings I have to assist the detectives.
lets see. If we getting juicy news about 1.0
I am more interested to know about what they decide to do as a studio after valheim is wrapped up with its 1.0 release. (Aside from the expected continued bug support for a while).
Am sure they have been discussing what the next project will be 👀
Or if the studio might have other internal changes.
Coulpe
7:30 am Eastern, and I'm getting an ATeveryone? Come on.
it was a @ news people who specificly clicked that they want those push notices 🤔
@ everyone is disabled here 😄
Having it enabled would likely cause chaos lol
Drop the likely.
😅
Yes yes thank you for the ping I for one am excited about news from my favorite game 😀
Morgen gjall
Lucky you that you can still use it, since I got new responsibilities at work I have to assist the detectives in the morning and can't get on discord till I'm done there.
I don't like it.
Hey all, I played Valheim at the beginning of release.. I have 1200 h on Steam and haven't played since. Do you think it's worth starting now or better wait for version 1.0? 🙂
1.0 won’t release for a while, so if you want to see the new content you should start now.
It is 100 % worth playing even now. It has had 2 major biome updates and some other smaller updates.
Hi guys, how can i find my world seed on a game i am hosting for my wife and I? When i google it i just get results to find dedicated server world seeds. Sorry this probably gets asked a lot
I do a run every release just bc it’s fun normally not 1200 hour runs but like I normally do one start to finish in like 7 days irl but enjoying ages is also good so if you do that it’ll maybe take 2w
Definitely if you have not experienced the land after the flat biome that’s yellow <—-spoiler friendly and the land after highly suggest playing bc it’s now a full built out game
Those biomes are beefy
First search on google got me this but I’m not a professional at world seeding and valheim so attempt at your own will
F5 opens console
Possibly try v
Print seeds
Hopefully any of these help
thanks i will try that
Hey people I need some music suggestions anyone got any
While playing? What kind of music?
Without context ima just say down with the sickness by disturbed
I generally listen to music while playing, I'm open to most genres! Just not a fan of british/drill rap
Will give this a listen
^boy with uke is my actual answer
My original answer was meme
Try Amon Amarth - Jormsviking album. Especially while raiding or fighting.
Oh
Ooh I'll try this!
I love boy with uke <~~this artist makes soft but vibe heavy stuff
First Kill song especially is pretty metal
I do like me some vibe heavy stuff
There is also https://discord.com/channels/391142601740517377/1202598389515030569 where you can look out for some fitting metal @glacial mural
Just type "printseeds" into console 🙂
Can someone tell me what the spill is
It's a Coffee Stain fireside chat with a lot of their studios and such, Valheim is up right now on it
10 PRINT "Seeds"
20 GOTO 10
Can you tell me what they say, I can't watch it at the current moment
I can't transcribe it, but you can watch it later. Basically info about the Bog Witch update. I can't watch it right now either, I have it paused and buffering so I can start it once my meeting is over 😉
Hold on... are you asking someone to summarise a podcast for you?
Yeah?
Well just the valheim part
Holy shit.
What?
Something about a prep table 👀
You can probably watch it later.
Look it up yourself!
||Also, they’re adding a scythe||
There will be a summary later, someone will always be there to do stuff like this. 🙂
||Farming simulator|| literally can't play anymore
Don't encourage them! Wow. It's not like they have to visit the local library, or buy the Encyclopaedia Britannica from a door-to-door salesman.
I'm too old for this shit!
lots of game goodies on the stream today, gonna have this on the bg~
Woah. Is that VIC basic?
It's Basic. It's not limited to the Vic 20.
Gotcha. Instant flashbacks to typing for hours as a little kid to try and play Missile Command.
What is the farming skill supposed to upgrade
Stamina use for planting maybe?
It broadens your 'west country' accent.
(No, not California, you ignorants! West country England.)
||I hope it’s not any kind of random harvest bonus, I don’t want any rng in farming
Same applies to the crafting and cooking skills, no rng. Crafting speed maybe?||
Agreed. I’m really curious to see how these skills work? Kinda wondering why too, to be honest? I’m optimistic though!
Oh, i have not missed the valheim Segment huh?
Somehow I thought this was a valheim only thing going to happen lol
i think there's a couple separated Valheim segments, but don't quote me
Oh, I see on the timelime. Is a V twice
super hyped for the changes hinted, all sound like some stuff pretty popular/commonly suggested by community
So i did miss something hm
Almost seems like this entire update is suggestion-inspired 🤔
Found it haha
Should be a second segment! I think lol
Oh.... that feasts sounds exactly like my suggestion 👀
Like, exactly hahaha.
Nice 😎
I am seeing what you mean
Kek
My ||mouse thanks for the multi crafting...||
😇
LOVE it, so viking
Second segment starting now!
They have a third as well later on it looks like now too
Ahh I see! Good to know, thank you
That little timeline on the bottom is handy.
Did I miss something? https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Future_content 🤔
Sounds like Deep North will be an amazing biome, looking forward to it already haha
||”Deep North will have calm moments”||
Haha, ||feasts||! I heard ||fists|| aka getting ||new fists weapon||
I just logged on, did they say anything about ocean update?
Not necessarily, yet at least
Damn 😢
Or rather, not specifically
There is probably not going to be a specific ocean update... I am pretty certain by now (unless smiffe yanked my chain lol).
Will there be updates to the ocean though? I suppose there might be some but nothing was mentioned regarding possible updates for the ocean yet. Might still get some. 🫡
Take this with a grain of salt, but they said they would like to touch up all biomes a little bit before 1.0.
Not guarantees of course 🙂
i heard something about "3 biomes" getting touched up before 1.0 but not 100% I heard right
I think I caught the same that dogg said. Just a brief mention they would like to hopefully touch up past biomes. Not sure on the wording unless I rewind haha.
Segment 2 is a wrap, basically talked about the games development and early access and stuff 👍
Looks like segment 3 is later, might miss it though- gotta take my car in to get looked at lol
I hope there's a summary or something later. This is not a great way to present news about the game for those unconcerned by anything not related to Valheim
I’m sure there will be, nothing to get stressed about 🙂
the community already annotating it in real time lol
#general message here are some notes in case you want a summary!
Hahahaha, rowing
,,viking ship forever, yo,,- smart man
At the “The Spill” they said the new update would come out around 1-2 weeks. The question is to PTB or main?
I think you might know as much as us.
my bets are on ptb, i would not be surprised for it to take the 1-2 weeks alone
I would wager PTB
Sounds like there'll be a lot to test.
indeed
Irongate has me super hyped, haven’t been this excited for content updates since Terraria Journeys End 😂
probs testing the bog witch
We'll be testing all of it.
And all the ||potions|| and much more
Did anyone else hear the part about the ||bog witch being similar to an enemy already in the game?||
Wonder what that could be about? 🤔
Maybe a Fuling? Lol
I’d love to see a fuling trader
Boar trader 🤌
Fenring in the swamp though?
I think a fuling would be a much better witch than a fenring
Yeah be out of element lol
Or a surtling trader? 😄
Neck trader (he sells lily pads)
How about a leech with a hat?
I cant wait 😄
Hugin's evil sister
Hugin doesent have a sister afaik
A fallen fallen valkyrie
Abomination sapling?
I'm really excited to see what the trader is because I mentioned something a few months back about adding a witch trader to the swamp. Most likely a coincidence but its so cool to see it come to life😁
friendly || draugr|| ?
Apparently the streak of ridiculous predictions couldn't last long
I want to see a charred witch xD
Its Haldor in drag
Still, is there much left that was definitely never coming to the game that still isn't?
I recall when I suggested adding a skill for the hoe and cultivator that reduce the stamina use overtime more than 2 years ago, I was told it was never going to happen
We already have hildir’s clothes for that.
And now we're getting a skill that does that
Did they say what the skill does? I couldn’t watch it.
I don’t think they specifically said what the skill does 🤔
What else could it be though
Every x harvests gives an extra crop or seed? I don’t really care as long as it isn’t rng related in any way.
I feel that even if that would be the case, it would also reduce the amount of stamina needed for both the cultivator, scythe and hopefully the hoe as well
Maybe it will go something like this; farming skill dictates quality of crops (like fish) and the new prep station will be where you can get multiple servings of the vegetable or whatever you prep.
Just speculation
Grow time maybe?
Me who doesn't care about skills at all... whatever it is won't effect me much
Same haha
For me the feasts are likely to be combining existing recipes together to make for something a bit better that last a lot longer
Yeah sounds like it. I’m just happy the cauldron crafting list is getting addressed lol
That feasts sounded at least 90% like how I suggested it way back (pre server wipe), so I am interested to see what the actual implementation they run with is like.
Its so funny to me because of all the suggestions I have made. That is one I talked about just recently-ish in the suggestions discussion channel 😂
It even has the whole put the feasts on tables aspect I suggested! Wowza
Very pleased overall with all the announcements, had no expectations but now I am really looking forward to all the changes
I feel like all crafting stations should have a sort/filter based on current biome
The list gets pretty long on all stations
At least the recipes you can make with the ingredients you have are always at the top, so if you know the ingredients, you will never have to search for what you want to make
wait did I not understand it correctly or did they imply that deep north wont have the true ending of the game?
It will have a true ending and it will also let you keep playing the world
ah I see
I can't remember but I could have swore that there was a chance for the ending to be after DN. I can't tell by now weather it'll be after or within now though.
To fight the final boss you must sail off the edge of the map
After some of what I heard from devs, it has gotten messy.
There'll have to be something else, just killing another Forsaken wouldn't really be an ending.
Oh wow so this update is akin to hearth and home update in term of overall content ?
All of the forsaken stones are full atm though, so who is to say it is a forsaken?
They were full before ashlands
Uh? They were before Ashlands too, and they added another.
Ah, only other rebuttal I can think of is in the text it said 7 forsaken, and there has been 7 now.
Something else will happen at the sacrificial stones, I’m sure
That's too sane though...
which text?
I watched it in a lore video on YouTube, and they talked about it.
Would have to go find it 🤭
do you mind trying that? Because i really dont remember reading it anywhere 🤔
Think I remember that actually, yeah I really liked that! Glad to see a version is getting added 😁
#valheim-chat message hoping we see this 😁
Could be one of the feasts for sure, using tons of boar meat to imply a whole hog, maybe a trophy too hahaha
Cooking some sausages IRL to celebrate all this Valheim news lol
pretty sweet news tbh yeah
Was a little while ago for me, but I could try.
Promise I am not pulling it from thin air though... but won't say I am 100% certain about it.
I am also looking into runestones and stuff right now as i am not 100% sure 😄 no worries
You're probably thinking of 'Seven were the creatures banished to this world by mighty Odin in the first days of his kingship. Seven gods and monsters too proud to bear his yoke. I have heard the tread of the Old Ones in the forest and have crouched in the shadow of the Mountain Mother when she flies. Of the others I know little. I will add to this stone when I have seen more.'
Segment 3 hasn’t happened yet, correct?
That is probably it yeah, yeah that is 100% it hahaha
Loremaster Derek
I just found the video and heard just that too rofl.
https://youtu.be/aN5Dzv4EKAo?si=YY3zyT441Xablt2I
I thought it was this video too, the lore one by ember.
Lore can be changed in an instant
Oooh , i dont remember this one 😄
Yep, she says in the video it could be possible the stone is just updated also haha. We never truly know and they can still decide on anything they want really.
might be because i dont tend to see much runestones in BF🤔
Deep north will have a boss, most likely a new stone to hang the trophy on too
Well, it might. No garuntees.
Gonna sit on my safe 99% 😂
I'm comfortable with my 99% too, in case the ending makes it unnecessary or they don't want to add a new power?
Idk what video but it would be interesting if this forsaken was not thrown in here by Odin but rather born and grew up in the harsh conditions of the deep north and is the most powerful boss.
They wouldn't be a Forsaken then.
Yep. True true.
boss*
We could get a boss that isn’t a forsaken if we need to kill that boss to reach/summon the forsaken
What valheim news???
I want like 10 more minibosses, make it happen IG
OOOOOOO thanks bro!!
Do you have the time in the stream they talked about that?
I don’t right now, but I’ll try and find it!
Bit silly because so many are watching just for valheim news hehehe
I think 2hr 4min mark
Valheim segment is coming up soon! Satisfactory just started, Valheim is after that.
2 more valheim segments left 🥳
dude why is there a 30 min slow mode in #screenshots
because people were using is as a chat room
oh
Just edit and add more images to the original post.
In other news, board game is getting new hives!
@umbral fog pinging you because I know you’re as excited as I am haha
Ashlands hmmm, really hope they miiiiight just talk about possibly expanding on the fortresses. All I could hope for it they revisit the biome some.
Instanced dungeons section perhaps? 🤭
At this stage I'd be very surprised. But I'm honestly going to stop second guessing the devs as well, gestures widely
indeed lol
You watch, they'll introduce potatoes into Deep North just to mess with us.
i think they about nailed the Ashlands difficulty at least on vanilla personally
Oh, the difficulty in Ashlands now is spot on.
no one can resist the POWER OF POTATO SUPREMACY!
I won't ever try to say anything concretely because I can't ever tell what the devs might decide on attempting to add.
I do love having a lot of it kept a secret though so I can actually experience it first hand rather than fully spoiled.
I'm placing bets on a fruit tree.
Ooh, I'd forgotten about that one.
I can imagine discovering a frozen, lifeless tree with a single slim branch holding a fruit. When you pick the fruit, it shatters, but you get a seed that you can plant to grow your own.
That would actually be really neat both mechanically and visually haha
Pop that into #suggestions 😉
If you have not already that is haha
.
oop, last segment goes to the board game it seems huh
I can't get MAH WIFE to play Valheim with me--I know right, I should just divorce her, but I'm too kind and loving--but maybe, probably, I can get her to play the board game at least
What happened in the talk thingy like the podcast or something i wasnt able to attend it
Alright is that all or if its still ongoing there will be something more?
They've already done a number of Valheim segments, so maybe just Deep North, unless I missed that one.
think it lasts for another hour
So there will be something more right? Maybe?
Maybe. In any case I'd guess it should be available as VOD once it's done?
Honestly I don't want them to give everything away.
Yeah not everything but kind of give a direction on what they are doing and what they are going to do
Well, we already know that.
Only two things I want to know.
Is DN the end of the game, or is there a possibility of there being a bit more after.
What kind of thoughts have gone around in the studio for after valheim 1.0. Future project ideas?
It's the final biome, as it always has been.
That's a given ofc ahaha
Quite.
i seriously doubt there'd be a whole extra BIOME, but, I'm NOT entirely sure they won't spring another boss on us after a Deep North final forsaken boss--like a final final, non-Forsaken (no power or trophy, probably--then again, maybe, as like bragging and badge of completion, but lore-wise at least, not Forsaken) boss
that probably, if it doesn't spawn AT standing stones, the way to will be unlocked upon hanging the trophies for all 8 biome bosses on the standing stones
1 & 2 star bosses after the end.
Seen many are suggest wanting the ground stone in the middle of the trophy stones to become a portal up onto the branch for some epic conclusion lol.
Will see what comes in the end ofc.
Well, no, we're not going anywhere near yggdrasil I don't think. Being as that's the entire thing we've been avoiding all game. I think, and this is just a wild guess at this point, we'll get a new portal at the centre of the stones that takes us to Valhalla when we're ready. That way people can keep playing if they want or just go through it and probably get a final cutscene or something.
yeah I could see that too
I'm not going if I can't take a neck with me
Its only a branch broken off of ygdrasil though, not the whole tree.
If I was to guess (should they go that route), we have to cleanse the branch itself perhaps.
No clue what direction they will take things ofc, just seen quite a few suggestions hoping for that ahaha.
Yeah, that’s my speculation as well.
Same, i am pretty sure something will be done at the spawn 😄
In a huge twist, the final portal takes us to the intro of Skyrim "hey you, you're finally awake" and this whole adventure was a fever dream.
Oh God, no.
It’s actually a brain dance from Cyberpunk2077
I agree, lol
No rng even for a bonus? I'd be happy to harvest and get a random extra turnip
I'm excited for multicraft.
Why should lucky people get more crops?
crafting skill level requirements for materials 😂
Was the big witch meant to be a standard enemy, or a boss?
Looks to be an NPC merchant
A mind is like a door. Keep the door open and let the insects in. The insects flock to the lights causing a pitch dark room. You spray the insects only to find that once they fall you've awoken on a cart travelling down a hilly cobblestone road.
Thank you for your wisdom, sensei.
-# put way too much thought power into that.
Potions will be cool. Maybe have some healing so we don't have to sit and wait for food to do it
We already have healing mead
Please tell me they've made a fermenter.
I will reiterate I am only in bronze age 😅😅😅😅
Yep, you can make it there.
Make a fermenter when you can, some meads are very important in later biomes
not least of which is, the very next one, and then the one immediately after that (at least initially)
the the the... spill!
During the Spill we'll be talking about what we're currently working on for Valheim!
The Spill is a collaborative grassroots initiative that aims to celebrate games with the dedicated communities who play them. Featuring announcements, gameplay deep dives, fireside chats, and more,
The Spill will be streamed live from the Coffee Stain Studios...
timestamped for you're pleasure
Hey Smiffe, did you hear about the new stuff being added??
I heard they are adding potatoes
I ALSO heard MANY people saying they were adding potatoes
oh never ever
I wouldn't be one of the head people testing new stuff and breaking them 🤔
What are you even here for if you're not in the information loop
smh
I..hunger.. for more info! 😂
Salted Pretzel while you wait?
Smiffe is our god and saviour!!
Do not speak ill of da gods or da gods shall slay you with their might subject.

Who does like Atgir?
Now let's see how many will believe this
almost everyone
Smiffe, have you had a chance to play the board game?
If an enemy isn’t resistant to pierce, a polearm is always going to be one of the best options
I’ve still never used an atgeir 🤔
This really was an unexpected surprise, the long awaited farming skill, feasts that I suspect will reward hoarders like many of us, the scythe and multi-craft. You guys did go above and beyond as always, good job!
@tardy vale are you planning new monsters like Nøkken or a Kraken or something at some point?
both are in the game already
what
Neck
Leviathan
^
Can you breed in Valheim
Neck is a lizard, no?
no
Tamed animals can, you cannot.
Isn't leviathan just a turtle you cant fight?
Näck = englishified = neck
And you really cannot expect a developer to explicitly confirm future plans.
You might as well not ask anything and you'd get essentially the same answer
but the neck we have is more like Japanese Kappa
Damn, guess I’ll have to wait a few more updates
it's hard to breed singleplayer. but bread you can do 🤔
Another QoL update
I’m never alone
Im looking forward to scythe but I hope we will see a flail in the future

What kind of moveset/other attributes would a flail have that other weapons don’t do already?
Would just look cool with a shield, since we discovered abit of english castle like structures in ashlands so maybe .. just maybe... we would find weapory from knights in the north
A weapon needs to do more than look cool
The existence of flails are highly disputed IRL let alone in game.
Iirc in general, but as a combat weapon? Hmmm
Well yes and no haha, after bonemass we dont really use a mace.. but who know what da shields of iron might cook up

What on Earth are 'da shields of iron'?
Forgetting the existence of frostner I see
They're forgetting quite a bit of the game content.
According to Jade PG’s recent video/interview with Grimm, apparently the bog witch is a ||greydwarf!||
Hm?
Srry, just a viking having Dreams about finding weaponry from other civilications from same time period since they adventure the world
Why would that make sense? Valheim is set in a fictionalised 10th realm based loosely on Norse mythology.
That’s interesting
They were.. If lucky with storms, a stone tjrow from England hehe
England is on Middgard not Valheim.
Unexpected, tbh, not unwelcome tho.
They did raid England, several times, Nd they did matter of fact, own swords and flails at the same time period, we did get ashlands stone building materials so you cant really argue on this ^^
A ||shaman|| then
In hindsight, it's obvious now
You want to bet?
valheim character = lives in old viking world = dies = get moved to the afterlife
Well, idk, but I want, I wish we had flails, so id say.. yes? XD
flails doesn't work in unity (valheims game engine)
Awww
that's why all unity made game basicly uses clubs. and not flails 😄
Fantasy got taken under by serpents during storms when the vikings got loot back home 😭
Darn storms ruining for us
I totally blame storms at this point
storms are fun
Valheim 2.0.. vikings discover... new lands... and finally.. get home with the loots
Shh, do not tell odin!
odin stares at distance
Get home? We're going to Valhalla. We're dead.
Nejj!
Yes, that's literally the point of the game.
...there is no odin emoji.
dieS
This is sad.
I once again... blame the storms

Devs said they wanna give deep north more of a cozy feel.
DOES it?
I sure am verry curious of the north, but I also remember.. they did listen to community who said valheim was too easy... and we got.. ashlands.. with death and serpents shooting magic
Yes?
But I am verry exited to what is upon us tho hahaha
We got Ashlands becuase it was the next biome. We got world modifiers because people said it was both too easy and too hard.
you are freezing terribly
Do we know if they're going to keep the mountains mixed in with the North?
Yeah ive seen ... dosen.. of body marks on the web hahaha, maybe.. some of my own aswell haha
I do wonder... what will fit.. the new boss..
scaroused
When I did take father down with my friends, we did it with a mod on the servers with a mod that gave us all powers, even so.. a friend died and father decided to meteor our base so we had to continue without him 😂
Its the boss that ive never had such serious face irl while facing him, and I sure am about.. scared/curious about the next.
We will defenetly do the next run with 0 mods, alright.. they wanted a clock to show time of day which they may have but otherwise.... I hope.. I HOPE... they will upgrade their gear before we will move on
Excited for cozy north!
Unfortunately, people don't use those solutions and complain the game is still either too easy or too hard...
Good morning— huh
My prediction for DN is that we will get new crops + greenhouse mechanic in order to grow those crops
Oh, I've wanted a greenhouse for so long!
As someone who playd dark souls... Ashlands surely made me roll more then ever before, I had to wash my cape and gear from all the dust from each visit to that "hell hole"
Tf you mean no?
I like that they added the modifiers, but I don't like that the standard for combat difficulty with most games is "adjust the damage variables"
Also shield gen kinda has that mechanic already
no damn greenhouse 😄
Both difficulty slider and death penalty can be used for that
I don't want poor Jonathan and Dvoid bashing there heads in for months on end just trying to make a greenhouse mechanic to work 😄
What would you suggest instead?
A while ago I suggested a jump potion that uses a hare's trophy as a base (the feet) that allows people to traverse Mistlands slightly easier before they obtain feather cape, I wonder if that'll be something in this Bog Witch update that uses other ingredients that are available at that time because it would also make sense to get this right before Mountains.
Nej, no greenhouse, gonna be hard to find any veggies at all in the DN if its gonna be cold xD
AI revisions, smarter enemies. I know it isn't easy, but it is much better
Add in coordination, have the fuling shaman fling the fireball at you while the spear thrower chucks at a side
Is that a statement, a question or a suggestion?
suggestion
We have a channel for those
We habe a tab for suggestions btw
Aye as.. ye.. as the all vikings said xD
The channel topic was on modifiers and difficulty....anyways, I use suggestions for what I think might actually be plausible, anything else is just clutter for that place
We have mods, valheim is verry mod friendly, you may find what ur looking for on the " r2modman"
I use a mod where you.. If ur lucky.. can achieve double jump and slowfall.
But its more of a subject for the mod channel

That's what the feather cape does.
I don't remember feather cape having anything to do with luck.
Yeah, we got some stuff ingame already, but If you want to Spice it up i mean
"R2modman" and "epic loots", but as Derek said, wrong channel for this kind of subject 🫡
Back to og... what do you guys think what.. what may.. the DN have as a boss?
Im curius to all ideas haha
Ice golem?
Golems we got, annoying, yes, but im sure they would Spice it up
Two bosses at the same time?
I need to get more mead for this...
scared
Ornstein and Smough 🤌
Yes exactly
2 Moders at once would suck
We’ve already got two dragon bosses, we don’t need any more
Twins
But yes... since it would be the last biome... a god would fit ..
DONT GIVE THE THEM ANY IDEAS!

thor has landed with his chariot, puny mortals.. you thought it was santa with presents, but you shall taste the mjolnir

Yikes lol
Isn't the mechanic technically there already?
We have the shield gen, also crops don't grow if they're covered via roof so couldn't they just add crops that work the exact opposite?
A 'God' would make no sense at all. We're tasked with taking down Forsaken, it'll be another one of them.
Although, having said that, I liked the Goblin bros miniboss, that was different.
Let me see, so far we have
mythical beast, eldritch horror, zombie amalgam, Frosty the drake, demonic undead king, insect worm, and angry daddy
And I wish we had something else instead of fader...
A humanoid boss that's roughly the character's size would've felt much cooler. Like reto but as an actual boss
all the times you've died come back to haunt you
There’s still a chance to get that for deep north, it could be anything.
The boss IS the player.
Fader is an angry daddy
The character but all skills are at 100
Ooh, that woudl be tough.
Even building, farming and crafting.
Do all players get duplicated if playing co-op?
Fighting a character with crafting 100 seems like a speedrun breaker (not possible to accomplish)
All they need is an abyssal harpoon and a cheat sledge
Special move: crafts 2-star build hammer
A longship filled with the ghosts of disgraced warriors
no. alot of mechanics would interfear
Ooh, scary mechanics.
Well.. how about Odin, he do stare at us, he is jumping beteende plains beteende the dead and the living.. and he has been with us on a distance for a long time, just watching us
I'm a mechanic, and I wouldn't interfere. I'd probably welcome it.
Odin as a boss? He’s the one we’re fighting for.
You think the final boss will be the person we're working for? Not unheard of, I guess. i'd hate that though, personally
...How do we know it's Odin?
It's the plot of the game.
Nope, I've figured it out.
As I said, it is the last biome afterall, and a twist is not uncommon
It's Haldor. No other dwarf laughs, why does he?
Doesn’t hildir?
Noo haldor is unhappy with our payments
They're in it together
Nah there's a runestone in the mistlands
"Do not remove their hats, they don't have jokes"
Haldor and hildir, with full force and their overbuffed plains mastodon loxes
we shall give you presents

DN boss is a yeti.
hide with lightsabre, I mean, sword
suddenly the ice crumbles and a mega serpent breaks the ice and plumbes up through it
" Jörmungandr stares at the lone viking/vikings with cold eyes and roars over the icy lands"

No, he's busy keeping Middgard together. If he leaves there, we've got bigger problems.
Defenetly 😬😂
That's the weirdest combination of emojis.
Well I would not stand and fite, id drop my weapons and shields and leg it hahaha
For those who dont know who he is.
Quick google search for answer.
Jörmungandr
(also spelled Jörmungandr), in Norse mythology, the evil serpent that encircled the world, biting its own tail. Jormungand was also known as the Midgard Serpent, or the World Serpent, because its body coiled around the whole Earth underneath the oceans, and the Earth was called Midgard in Norse cosmology.
Is there anyone who doesn't know who he is?
I didn’t know
Absolutely, not everyone are born a viking 😅
Really? oh.
No, none of us are born Vikings. But in a game so heavily based on Norse mythology I figured people would have an interest.
My middle name irl is literally viking, but I do not know super much about the time period but I sure am curious 😆
Norse thing hasn't made it into a Marvel movie = doesn't exist
unless it has, I haven't kept up
Huh? What has Marvel got to do with anything?
ironman graydwarf appears
Omg not another graydwaaarrrfffff 😂
That made me giggle abit, but I do have bad humour lol
le me building a base when yet another graydwarf decide to attack my ashland base
For anyone who doesn’t know by the way, “piquant” means something tasty/appetizing. it’s pronounced pee-kent peek-ant (⛰️🐜.) So if there’s anyone out there like me who was wondering what that means… there you go 😁
that sounds so weird to me
like, the pronunciation, might just be cuz the only time I've heard that word is in French (pee-cahn)
Never heard of tbh lol
Yeah, no idea where 'pee-kwint' comes from.
Googling 'piquant' gives you pee-kwint as a pronunciation in the first result, but then everything else that I've looked up (even google translate) gives pee-cant
Yeah, I’m coming across similar things lol now I’m not so sure 😅
Probably pee-cant, that’s what I’m seeing most of at least…
Not a word I hear a lot lol
seems like it's at least recognized here tho
maybe regional, but not US/UK
-# heccin, nerd sniped by a random pronunciation
That's how we'd proounce it in the UK too.
Fixed it 👀
Added it to the Wiki too.
@tardy vale please tell me the scythe will do damage, even if its only a little i want to defend my crops against greydwarves with a scythe!
Even if he could, I doubt he'd say. Why not just wait?
Literally can't play
Deep north when
RIGHT THE FUCK NOW
now meaning any time between the present and an infinitely far future
a) We've just had Ashlands b) They've just announce the next update which is the swamp + QOL one that literally everyone is talking about so hazard a guess that it won't be for a little while yet.
I just want Santa’s workshop maaaan
Well, you might need a different game for that one.
Nuh uh
we'll definitely be getting a yule goat
why is it when i try to join a friend on steam it says error launching game no licenses
probably from the "qu" rule of english, which makes the kw sound -- people or robots who've never heard the word properly I'd assume are more likely to pronounce it that way
incorrect, to me it's Peek ant"
A - aye not uh
Pee, kent!
I’m go and edit it for the 3rd time, I’ll get it right this time 🥲
someone mentioned peaks
rather than watching the 4 hour video, is there a summary somewhere for the video of "the Spill" talking about upcoming plans?
good thing it doesn't have australian etymology, "Pee, mate!"
I got you 💪
There’s also a wiki page on it, upcoming/planned features.
Thanks!
Appreciate it. was actually going to ask the same thing myself lol
So have the oceans gotten a update yet or is that something that's been dropped? Or still in progress?
I remember there used to be a ships and sea update on the original defunct roadmap.
No ocean update yet, and we don’t actually have confirmation necessarily that it will get an update. Irongate mentioned in the dev talk today that they would like to touch up parts of the game, but nothing is set in stone.
Plains needs a dungeon, maybe an Iron Mine from the Fulings
Oooooh an iron mine, that actually sounds pretty cool 👀
Youtubers are starting to get videos out by now as well hehe
It does
But plains identity is being more of a combat biome
A little change of pace to break up the formula
What would be nice is that if you can't widdle down villages slowly
It would be nicer in my opinion if once you enter the village, it turns into a raid where it'll respawn if you don't get the item or not kill the main guys like berserkers and shamans
But it's fine as is I guess
Mornin gjall 😄
They're called Fuling camps.
Nah Derek - those are fueling camps to fuel my insatiable greed for coins and black metal 😂
I like the approach in the Plains in terms of collecting metal, its a good way to swap it up a bit
Or test out some new weapons. Or just kills and funsies.
Morgen gjall!
I've been too fast for the detectives and have nothing to do there.
It just gets delivered to your door, so handy.
Build something that gives comfort in its radius and it will get upped by one.
Wait till the next time you can build it to put it anywhere you want.
You can also enable debugmode and build it like that.
Hmm I built a fire and a bed near it but i still cant see it in my build menu
You can't build it at the moment, it is a seasonal item, only available during some part of the year.
Hence the debugmode to enable it to build it anywhere anytime.
Oh got you thnx. But when the season comes I will get it?
You would have had it even without finding a maypole as long as you have held the ingredients at least once.
Ingredients are: Wood, Dandelion and Thistle
From June, Maypoles are made temporarily buildable to celebrate Midsummer and then unbuildable in July.
Oh I see lol. I thought u had to find them to build them
By the way, what you did to voldermort's dad was not cool.
xD
why would you even try to use a tool on enemies?
Scythes have been used as weapons throughout history, even specific war scythes have been used so not that far fetched 🙂
If I only have a hammer or screwdriver and someone attacks me I'll use the tool to defend myself.
Won't be dropping the tool and go "Oh, no that is a tool I can't attack you with it because it isn't a weapon."
a number of farming tools have been repurposed for battle throughout history, farming flails being a prime example
That is also why the Dutch from the Netherlands have the nickname cheeseheads.
They used their buckets / barrels they used to make cheese in as makeshift helmets.
wait what? i'm from the Netherlands and this is the first time i'm hearing about that 😂
um...
yeah, check out the pic of the 17th century war scythe on wiki for a better example
so viking age. with a 1700th century weapon 🤔
and magic fireballs 😄
and scythes
vikings did not belive in 1700 century
"Some sources suggest that the military scythe was developed more or less independently of the agricultural tool, but it seems to be generally agreed that the battlefield weapon was an evolution of the benign farming implement. The main difference between the two was the position of the blade. In farming, the blade was at a right angle to the wooden shaft with the cutting edge on the concave (or inner) side which allowed for sideways sweeping motions to thresh crops. In the modified war scythe, the blade – on the convex, or outer side – was in line with the pole which allowed for forceful forward thrusting and chopping."
sorry. the one you're getting is the one made for crops, not cutting down horses and light infantry
i'm pretty sure scythes weren't used for threshing grain 😉
they did cut the crop, but not thresh it
Not much difference here than the pickaxe doing damage, you´re swinging a sharp and pointy tool with a blade that can take off your thumb without issue against something. But a tool is a tool 🙂
try it ingame when it's out on PTB
Im not arguing your decision in any way, just saying that a scythe can and have been used as a weapon with little issue.
A sharp schythe is not something to fool around with.
run that through someone and see what they say 😄
it's good for catching horse legs
It's good for catching anything, put a scythe behind something and pull = instant serious damage
most un-armored targets
this is a interesting read
Though if that gets to do damage to mobs, so should the building hammer, the hoe, the cultivator and the chain should be usable as weapon as well.
Maybe other tools or items should also be changed to accommodate tools doing damage to mobs.
Chairs, bottles from mead, ...
I dont know how that thought process went, closest comparsion here is the pickaxe. And again, I'm not arguing any decision made, just that a scythe is far closer to a weapon than any other farming tool. It is proper dangerous to use if you have no clue what you are doing.
Anything can be used as a weapon if you are creative enough.
Yeah..?
The hammer, hoe and cultivator don't have attack animations (and the scythe probably will, like pickaxes), and the chain can't even be equipped
All true, just saying if one tool gets to attack shouldn't more get the same treatment?
Maybe even add some things that could be used as a weapon that aren't now, like the chain.
@tardy vale interesting read as you said, evidence pointing to persians using some kind of chariot scythes as weapons at 400BC. Took them some time to figure out war scythes after that though 😄
What would the scythe do as a weapon that other weapons don’t do already?
that one is like those Leonardo Da vinci weapons 😄
Yes, one for combat, not the one for farming
Where do you think the one made for war came from? Scythes was used as weapons by farmers, it was readily accessible and common.
Yes, but a highly ineffective one.
You could probably use it to kill meadows enemies, but not anything above
Honestly, we're just not short of weapons.
I don't understand how that is the point here. We discussed scythes potenial and usage as a weapon in general and that the request for it to do damage was not that far off considering what kind of a tool it is and how it have been used throughout history.
But yeah, disregard context and make it about enemy level in valheim if you want.
For sure.
How isn't it the point? Adding anything to the game at this point, especially early in progression has to actually add something, not just aesthetics.
I would not be surprised if it worked like the butcher knife. Even if it looks and behaves as a weapon, it can't be used as one
I know a secret. and you will have to wait and find it out about the scythe 👀
I expanded on someone earlier mentioning a wish for a scythe doing damange and how that was not far off considering it's real world usage. In game was not even part of the discussion in that context.
I just said that it could deal minimal dmg, but only enough to kill meadows creatures and for anything above you might as well use an actual weapon
Ingame wasn't part of the dicussion? Well, there's your problem. This isn't the History channel. Just because Vikings had something doesn't mean it should be in the game.
No, this is the general channel where we can discuss things outside the game.
But you're not. You're discussing something you want in the game.
No, I am not.
Then what has been the point of any of this?
stop arguing Derek
What is the point of any discussion? We were talking about scythes and the history around it.
You know many secrets Smiffe 🤭
I do
Nevertheless Scythe is cool addition to the game, even if it was meant to be used only as a tool for crops.
Mace in every game is king
Unless the game is Russian roulette.
Is it possible that TURNIP DESPAWNS
planted ones? crops are attacked on sight by enemies, make sure your field is properly spawnproofed, it's possible that something spawned inside at night and despawned at dawn.
(or that a greydwarf or bow skeleton threw a rock/shot at them from outside if there isn't a proper wall)
Alr got it
Oof, of all crops to lose, turnips are the most painful...
Did they say Bog Witch will drop before Halloween?
nope
we never promise dates unless we ´put that information everywhere you won't miss it
But people believe themselves to be special and expect a dev to answer that question to them specifically rather than just sharing it to the wide public
Anyway smiffe tell me the exact date and hour DN will release
Smiffe DMs you the answer
I suspect, as is often the case, they simply don't know.
OMG he actually did tell me the date.
DN WILL RELEASE ON
My wild guess is that they will release it when it's ready, tested and they are happy with the result
When will bog witch release? My guess is about three weeks
in the next weeks is all we know 🙂
Weaks? 🤔
Oh no, did Rianu survive??
Lets just hope he did not use emerald splash 😄
Otherwise we would find him donutified somewhere
strongs
Colds
Whoever did the little bar at the bottom of The Spill thing - putting the icon of the game they're discussing in the lower left so a person can easily scroll/scrub to the stuff they care about... that's some galaxy brain stuff.
As We Descend looks cool for folks into that sort of thing.
Can we talk about the stuff discussed in The Spill or no bc spoilers?
lol, the whole discord went wild talking about it day of
I mean it's public information 😄
unless you say that thing you're not suppose to say.. like @modest moth
||Release date of the DN||?
Shhhhhh, we know it is released on
I'm always late to the party hahahaha
I've been 😉 Busy more than anything, kid stuff, other games
SHOCKINGLY I was not for a change, but that's typically me too
What's up with you? Anything new and exciting?
Hmm nothing really, baby turned 1 recently so that’s exciting! Getting a little easier to have a life again lol
Got a new job, starting Monday.
Getting settled into the new house, building furniture and fixing stuff constantly lol
Yeah, things ebb and flow like that. I'm taking one of mine to get their learner's permit tomorrow.
Ooooh exciting stuff! Jeez time flies lol
They joked about a love potion but I get the feeling it would help with animal taming
Battle potion to increase spawn rate 😈
It should work with necks
Taming potion to tame stuff you previously couldnt?
Taming potion to tame a lox in the wild, for example
I don't care what it does as long as I can make the necks love me instead of eat me
Instead of the usual taming cycle - you can still tame in the wild, it just takes a long time and requires the player to be nearby etc
Maybe it could temporarily tame them? That way there's still a reason to tame things the way we do now.
While they will not love you you can keep some in your base if you have campfire close to them 🙂
We really needed to show up better for the this-or-that where IG promised to make them tameable if the neck won.
They said that the Asksvin is an evolved neck during that bit 😂
I thought necks were evolved asksvins. Why would the perfect creature need to evolve into anything else?
Has anyone ever created a bridge connecting two land masses together before?
Oh yeah, definitely
I would love to see what your bridge looks like
I have, mostly. Not in ocean, but between two swamp areas separated by a channel. Made it almost all the way but had one bit in the center that couldn't be raised enough so bridged it with wood.
I haven’t done it personally, but I’ve seen a handful of bridge builds 🙂
Ah...don't know why I read that as land bridge. Mine was not a build across, but raised terrain.
multiple times. just need a map that allows for it
i think the opposite is harder: digging a functional canal that you can sail a boat through. bridges are cool but plentiful. the landscape has to allow a canal.
See that's cool, I tried that initially but I had such a hard time seeing the bottom floor of the ocean
yeah it's hard to get it deep enough because the water will prevent you from standing and digging further--the catapult deals pickaxe damage I think, I wonder if anyone's tried using catapults to blast out a canal, like what happens when the shot hits the surface of water?
also there's max depth/max height. sometimes you think you have a good route for a canal, but you can't actually go deep enough.
That's a great question
good point
It would be hard to do for anything that got deep as ocean, but two close land areas separated by shallows might be doable.
I find that raising the ground a little bit then putting pillars inside that ground, works the best for these bridges
I interpreted that comment similar to how id Software always said "2 weeks" in the run-up to the Quake release (... that makes me feel old) but also thought it seemed reasonable considering (from what I gathered) most of the stuff was done and tested. Plus it fits with the time of year.
yeah
I think the correct response is always "five minutes, Turkish".
or "between now and somewhat later" in swedish 😄
we almost never ever tried to time something with a specific date to avoid crunchtime and un-nessessary stress
I wonder how much crunch time and unnecessary stress contribute to the disaster releases we've seen in a few AAA titles over the last few years. I gotta think it's a non-trivial contributor.
People in such a hurry to get things out the door that they just stop caring about quality and whether something is actually fun to play.
to many people
Approaching 100%
since I started in the gaming industry. I hear it almost montly how people just "die on the inside" from stress on projects
or people just leave studios due to stress
it's a huge reason so many want to go into Indie game dev studios
or small teams
I've played every Fallout and Elder Scrolls game and have like, 1% desire to play Starfield. By comparison, if some random dude approached me on the street and said "Michael - I heard you like Valheim. Wanna start a new character and server with me?" I'd have at least 90% desire to do that.
I was very glad to hear that IG don't do crunch. Crunch is the worst.
The best dev experiences I've had were on small teams. I've been on some small teams that sucked but I kid you not, every single one of thosethe thing that caused me to seek greener pastures was crunch-time BS.
yes
totally agree
a handful times we had to push dates on things. for good reasons and I am eternally thankful that we don't have set dates promised to public or journalists so we can move planned things to prevent issues
Something that kinda surprised me about the Spill thing - it seems like IG is mostly embracing an emergent design philosophy for Valheim. That there's not a very specific grand overarching vision and it's more "We'll see how we feel when we get there."
yup 😄
what is missing. lets add that
good plan
then we won't end up with something stupid that doesn't work out in the end
My own control-freak/not-comfortable-with-not-planning tendencies would freak out about that and I feel addressing some of those tendencies might benefit me not only in my creative/technical pursuits but in my life in-general.
most games takes 5-8 years to develop
imagine if you wheren't allowed to adapt as game engines advance, ideas grows and people become better at there jobs and can do higher quality things
There's this old Laurel and Hardy skit where they're delivering a piano. It's typical Laurel and Hardy hijinks getting the thing up the stairs but when they knock on the guy's door, no one is home. So they gotta take the piano back down and of course it ends up in a mangled pile of ivory and wood at the bottom of the steps.
I like to think the emergent design philosophy sends someone to the top of the stairs (without lugging the piano up first) is that.
It lets you adjust to changing information and conditions without the thing ending up a mangled unplayable mess.
Similarly many AAA releases get attention the same way a piano crashing down stairs gets attention
well
big games -> big publisher -> big money
big money -> publisher who demands strict release shedules from game-devs
hence the whole stress and crunchtimes come from basicly
it is funny/curious how it does seem consistently like the most 'succesful' by measure of concentration of money and/or profitability are ALSO the worst
worst product quality to dollar ratio for consumers, worst employers to work for for employee job satisfaction, worst in terms of business practices like cutting corners, polluting the environment, etc., most ruthless in pursuing profit
I'm a big advocate of agile methodologies for that reason and it's always interesting to me how the dogmatic application of those principles results in almost the exact same failure patterns as the waterfall method. Frequent delivery doesn't help because people like new shiny stuff, frequently delivery helps because it gets you immediate feedback.
Throw 'big IP' into that mix...
Also without getting too political private equity seems to ruin everything
yeah 😦
At least anything where creativity and passion contribute significantly to the finished product
That's the thing that puzzles me. I'd be worried about squandering a good reputation with garbage.
stress -> less inovations -> worse game
I've stop counting how many games launches with huge parts of the game missing, or are almost unplayable due to issues and bugs
things that cannot be solved by crunchtime 😦
I feel like most older games have more of a "soul" in them
there is a cheat nowdays. it called "online service and updates"
look at cyberpunk. how many years did it take from unplayable at launch. to a good working game?
2 years? 1.5?
once an IP gets big enough, the people that handle IP licensing don't understand the things they're licensing the IP for - video game, lunch box, whatever - it's all the same.
Which to their credit - it's decent now but I gotta think they lost a lot of players (like me) that got a bad taste in their mouths and never looked back
Heck, they often don't even understand the IP!
same for me 😦
My friend who turned me onto Valheim said it's really good now so I might give it another try. His recommendations are usually pretty solid.
well. you might need the DLC also 🤔
the what?
Yeah I'm not giving them more money, I already feel like I paid too much for it
Oh yeah
if I don't like a game in that time. I stop trying and refund
Dude that's a serious Gamer Pro Tip right there
CD has a pretty bad rep with 1st releases, even back to Witcher 1
Yeah I bought Cities Skylines 2 and refunded when I couldn't get enough FPS to click the "Begin Game" button or whatever it was.
Extremely good point, needs to be on a plaque 😂
Do you all think most modern games are too focused on realism? Both photorealism and mechanical realism?
Yes and no.
im more against photorealism cause, well... i cant run something that looks liek real life lol
to many games made daily to even answer that 😄
For photorealism - yeah. I think having realistic light simulation is good but trying to make it look just like real-life - when it adds nothing to the game - is useless. Games should be fun first.
There was this game Trespasser that came out in the 90s.
And their attempts to lean into realism just ended up making it unwieldy and not fun
and that's only on steam
not on GOG, Epic Games, there own launchers
etc
etc
etc
I think a better question is - do those elements serve the game? It's kinda like virtuosity in music - it has it's place but if the goal is getting people to shake their butts, it only goes so far.
depend on the game IMHO
for a hack and slash MMORPG game. I don't understand hyper realism 😄
Driving and flight sims come to mind - they benefit from that sort of thing.
But even then I frickin love me some Mario Kart
See Valheim doesn't try, either department.
Does it make realistic sense that it takes 30 iron bars to upgrade this weapon? No
Does it make sense in the context of progression & getting the latest and greatest? Sure.
does it have to make sence?
Was similar to Valheim in most older games, kept it simple
Now you got fallout 4 saying you need 4 screws, 10 springs, 8 steel, 2000 aluminum, and 1 wood to make the thing
It's preferable to keep it simple
I feel Valheim neatly addresses that with the resource rate modifier. My guess is at some point they discussed making crafting recipes tunable but after realizing how much work it takes to make an in-game menu to tweak every recipe/etc, resource rate felt like a good enough solution
I don’t think it’s ever a good idea for a game to do something only because it’s ‘realistic’ or ‘immersive’ or whatever.
Gruictor (sorry I hate @'ing people) - have you played Project Zomboid?
No, but I've seen it
They lean heavily into realistic mechanics and some of it does feel SUPER grindy but at the same time, it really adds to the sense of accomplishment/feeling like you earned it.
I've crafted several Frostners in my Valheim playing time and every time, without fail, my first thought upon crafting is "that was a lot of work but 100% worth it"
My point being I think it's less a matter of realism and more a matter of making the mountain tall enough that the player feels like climbing the mountain was worth it
harvest ingredient A, B, C, E
process ingredients B and C to make material D
use ingredient A+D+E to make item
^this is the worst that crafting gets in Valheim, it's not terrible
Other games like to do more like
A+B = C
C + D = E
F + G = H
E + H = I
J + K = L
L + M = O
I + O = thing
It's like the most simple, but also most beautiful graphics I've ever seen
Nobody wants this (unless they want a headache [satisfactory, lookin at you])
Agree
I blame all the shaders we use 😄
... I always thought that was part of the point of Satisfactory. You craft a few of them by hand to get things going but they give you all the tools necessary to automate it. Without the increasing complexity of manufacturing lines, I feel the game would get dull really fast.
Yes but it's the point of that game to do that, it doesn't really belong in adventure RPGs
I can see that.
Yet it seems to be creeping in, becoming a standard
But also the game I'm trying to build is almost exactly that - the combination of Valheim, Satisfactory, and Project Zomboid. The goal is creating a cure to the zombie disease but it requires a fairly complex manufacturing setup.
Ever play ARK? BLEH
I think that's partially because building the exact same game everyone else has built gets old after a while and games need new elements/experiences to stay fresh
A little but not extensively.
But I'm familiar with the grindy aspect of it and how many folks find it not-fun.
(Good concept, terrible studio, terrible construction)
🤔
🤨
but also I've felt similar things - I call it "the ktichen sink effect" where every game now seems to have crafting/etc. One of the newer Tomb Raider games had stuff like that and I felt it really distracted from the parts of Tomb Raider I enjoy most but still felt necessary.
There's this paradox, modern perception.
"This thing makes a game good" + "needs to be new & radical"
Old designs didn't suffer from this, they had no notion of "this is what is right to do"
"Old" feels like a really relative term. Mind if I ask what your first gaming experiences were? There's no measuring contest here, it purely for frame-of-reference
And asking how old you are doesn't really inform that either as I know a lot of folks my age (40s) that recently started gaming despite having been around since pre-Space Invaders
Gotta be civ4, maybe civ3, I'm about as old as civ4
K despite being old I haven't played a lot of the Civ games but as an example, if they introduced RTS elements into Civilization, would you see that as a positive or negative thing?
They kind of do in multiplayer, concurrent turn taking, turns it into a button mashing contest (from what I've seen I don't do multi around there)
The design is supposed to be turn-based, I'd say it'd probably be negative if they had already made a release as turn-based*
That being said, Civ 7 comming out, If it turned out to be more of an RTS - I wouldn't really mind, because it's a different game
I really have no qualms about playing old-old games (NES is still working), there're elements I like and some of the design solutions to the technical limitations are pretty clever
And part of the reason you continue playing the Civ games is because each new entry in the series, while being faithful to its predecessors, also introduces interesting new elements that change how you play the game? I agree with you that "new for the sake of novelty" isn't a great reason to add something to a game but I also understand the connection between dopamine and novelty and how the combination of those things keeps me gaming.
