Not to pile onto the “when ashlands” posts since I don’t want to give some of you an aneurism. 😄 But my one and only comment about it before actual release is that it is dev created anxiety/anticipation, for lack of a better word. Most games offer a release date weeks to months in advanc which prevents these types of conversations do not dominate public forums and give the community an actual timeline. I also would like to see something different discussed in general chat aside from seeing the same Q&A repeated ad nauseum.

While I understand it is a small team, a project manager should have the capacity to give an expected release date that is more specific than “0-45 days from now”.

It’s not the end of the world, and it does create its own form of marketing in a way, but if you take this route of extremely generalized and nonspecific information regarding a topic many many people are excited about, it will become a topic of hot discussion and rumors will abound. There is simply no way around that.

I'll grant you that when estimating times, it's obviously a good idea to have some buffer time for unexpected issues, but if you're announcing release dates, you don't want to set the date too far back because what else are your developers going to be doing? If the client has to wait for literally no reason they're gonna be pissed. At the same time you don't want to announce a release date too early because that leads to cut features, bugs, crunch time.

The best option is to not give concrete dates, but general approximations

We're talking about games that aren't even finished products yet. It only feels slow because we're witnessing development in progress. All of the games that release in their finished forms took massive amounts of time to develop in the background that we conveniently don't have to deal with (but we miss out on having early access and being a part of the development process).

No one would even know valheim or 7 days to die or any of these other games even existed if the developers chose not to make the games available until they were finished.

Heck, if were using other Early access survival games as an example, Valheim is about in that same range. Raft was 4ish years, The Forest was more than 4 years, and so on. So Valheim's development speed for an EA survival game is about average

V rising to as sick on launch, that sunlight mechanic is one of the coolest things I’ve experienced in a game especially during a boss fight where they clear the all the surrounding area. Making it a fatal mistake that you chose to fight them during the day in the first place

The double whammy of no release date & dodging all the spoilers is driving me mad! But in the best way possible, as this game has me super addicted! 🙂
