Biggest mechanic to be aware of is that food is functional, it's not just to keep from starving. You can't starve in Valheim 😉 But food is how you get more health and stamina, and better food gives you more of each, so it's good to focus on making better food where you can.

There could be a ton of different things, and it depends a lot on how and what you're trying to connect to. Short list would be making sure you have the server address right and you and the server host don't have firewalls preventing communication.

I think the most annoying part of my current house is I have a bunch of cat five terminations in the basement, but no idea where they go in the rest of the house. Hardest part about residential is that it's really hard to get access to properly run a lot of those things. You almost never have raceways or anything that you can use to go vertically through the house other than ventilation ducts. I have a toner and can trace them if I could even tell where I was looking, they all just disappear into the wall from the basement and I have no idea where I might look except behind the coax panels in the rest of the house and that has been an exercise in futility so far.

Yeah, thats probably my biggest reason for staying away from (and getting out of) residential, pathways are so unpredictable. There’s a lot of great tools in my kit for such things, but even fish tapes/glow rods/cable casters only get me so far.

Ah, yeah who knows where those cables end up then. And I can never bring myself to cut cable out, you just never know when you might need it 😅

Best part about commercial is that electricians often take care of pathways for me, makes it a heck of a lot easier for me lol.

I did one house once, and I have no idea what I would've done if the attic was not so open and easily accessible. Maybe had to run conduit outside or something silly like that. I think you have a slight misunderstanding of how this works - multiplayer is directly hosted between different people
there is no one dedicated server

Also, the game can take a few hundred hours to finish as it is a survival game - it's not got a single story you can rush through

Dedicated servers are definitely an option. Players can host a server that required they be logged in to participate in, but there are most certainly servers that can be set up (usually paid) to allow authorised players to log in and play at their discretion.

Here's my issue with an ocean biome - it has to end in a biome boss. Which, if we're required to be in a boat to fight it, forces the encounter to a multi-player effort. If we don't have to be on the ocean, it's not an ocean boss. So, a solo player can't control their boat and engage with an ocean boss at the same time.

Nope. There is render scaling that's native to the Unity engine, but there aren't any company-branded scaling techniques enabled.

The nice thing about Valheim is that due to the stylized graphics it really doesn't suffer much at all when scaling using more traditional methods and still gets a huge performance boost.

My two thousand dollar laptop still struggles with valheim

So that's a two-fold issue... Valheim is a game that uses a lot more CPU power than the average game just by the nature of the random generation of the world and having to track how that all works. The other part is that laptops are physically small, and many times will share heatsinks between the GPU and CPU or they are at least so close together that they often have some bleedover of heat into each other. When you're loading up both of them at the same time very heavily, you get struggles.
