I would, as user of a germanic language Pronounce it with no mute letters, and with none of the letters affecting or combining with each other. So I would say Smiffe, e as in ever. If we would want to make a i-sound, then the letter i would cover everything for us here. Strange thing English has about making letters mute. I would say that if something is not to be pronounced, then don't write the letter for it. (tried to upload a 3-second audio clip to really show it)

Yeah. Imagine if the writer wants the reader to pronounce pronounce exactly what the writer imagines. Feels like possibilities is lost. It is like the words isn't there to be read, but to remind the reader of a pre-learned words.
I would say; Write as thou speak, then the reader will speak as thou spoke, by only reading yer words, without the reader needing to know the words beforehand. Anything else seems limiting to me.
