I don't understand why someone needs to boost a 5150. They have enough midrange, tightness, and gain on their own

nimble jungle
rancid yew
#

I don't normally boost my amps except the lower gain ones, that's about it

#

For guitar I usually use my mini Soldano head. Has tight lows and enough gain and midrange for pretty much anything. Only thing it doesn't do are cleans

hexed igloo
#

i find most amps just sound kinda bad on their own

rancid yew
#

That goes into an old Sound City 6x10 cab from 1973

hexed igloo
#

the only amp i actually like without a boost is the rockerverb

rancid yew
#

It's hard to dial a bad distorted tone on a 5150 imo

#

Mesas have a lot of margin or error

hexed igloo
#

5150 always gets a tornado drive in front, mesa usually a ts but sometimes just a clean boost

hexed igloo
nimble jungle
rancid yew
#

As long as everything isn't at 0 or 10 it'd sound more than ok

hexed igloo
#

5150s are easy to make sound good but as a result a lot of tones with them sound ridiculously similar

#

which doesnt help with everyone and their mum using them

rancid yew
#

Everyone uses them because they're awesome

#

I don't have one. I've played several

hexed igloo
#

when i find guitar tones i like it tends to always be a dual rec or marshall of some sort nowadays

nimble jungle
hexed igloo
#

HIHA have one of all three

hexed igloo
rancid yew
#

For my tighter stuff I always just use the mini Soldano. Cheap, sounds awesome. Recording wise I usually do direct with pedals or mic actual cab/qmp setups

hexed igloo
#

every amp model on that thing sucks balls except for the 5150

nimble jungle
hexed igloo
#

thats why i sold mine

#

even the pod xt and headrush have better marshall and mesa models

rancid yew
#

Tbh I love Ampeg VH-140C and 5150 tones. Those are some of my favs. I have an SS-140C I also use a fair bit

rancid yew
nimble jungle
#

trust me i love the cortex but its absolutely ruining Genuine amps like the 5150

rancid yew
#

I just bought an HD500X

#

I already have these

#

Tbh the POD Rectifier models are better than the actual amps

hexed igloo
#

i use an axe fx 2 rn but want a 3

#

also have a Peavey Invoy which fucks

rancid yew
#

Lately I just use Rectifued and put a Peper's Dirty Tree in front. Instant chug

rancid yew
#

I just did bass for my prog death band with my old Basic 50 combo

hexed igloo
#

i literally only use it for black metal

nimble jungle
#

Im tryna get a Peavey vyper ngl

rancid yew
hexed igloo
#

ihsahn used the 2x12 bandit which is the same circuit as an invoy

rancid yew
#

Our vocalist has a transtube Bandit and it's fucking awesome

hexed igloo
#

for the last few emperor albums

rancid yew
#

They're not bad amps. Cheap as hell, the later ones are harder to dial in than the early ones

hexed igloo
#

sounds good but its very much a one trick pony for distortion lmao

rancid yew
#

I have a reallllly early Bandit

#

First year of production

#

Fuzzy on its own but takes boosts well

#

Some of my amps

#

I don't mind using boosts if an amp isn't extravagant amounts of money. None of my amps were super expensive

hexed igloo
#

the only amps i really want irl are a triple rec, a rockerverb and an ampeg

rancid yew
#

I want a first gen Sunn Model T but I'm not paying $5,000 for an amp that's basically a Bassman preamp with an ultralinear power amp

nimble jungle
#

gimmie a full sized 6505 and im set

#

i just have the mini head rn

rancid yew
#

I'm more of a bassist than guitarist nowadays band wise. My Sunns have me set

hexed igloo
#

i want a sunn model t reissue kinda but not massively

rancid yew
#

The reissue is more of a Soldano/5150ish gain channel with a Fender style clean channel

hexed igloo
#

i think the reissues sound better than the originals tbh

rancid yew
#

Nothing like the originals. Way way way more gain

hexed igloo
#

but also im a diehard cult of luna fan so

#

Johannes basically only uses the reissues nowadays

rancid yew
#

The originals only get slightly fuzzy when cranked. The reissue has gobs of gain

#

All of my Sunns are old

#

This thing can actually do a pretty good OG Model T impression thanks to the parametric EQ

#

How the fuck am I supposed to "DUDUDU DU" really fast

#

I'm determined to master it but it's like holy shit

I'm so glad I have a spark mini so I can just play this shit while laying in bed

Literally my setup rn

KDH

Fender / FMIC have just announced their lawsuit win in a court in Germany that will change everything about the guitar industry.
Effectively as of the 9th of March 2026 Fender has EU copyright protection on the Fender Stratocaster body shape. That means that guitars using that shape from brands like Schecter, ESP, Suhr, James Tyler, Jet and man...

▶ Play video
#

TLDR: Fender won a case that basically makes Strat body copies illegal to sell in the EU.

#

RIPP to my European guitar brethren.

balmy vortex
#

i just saw that yeah, im very curious on how much its going to change the industry

open fjord
#

Either way if Fender goes after a huge company like ESP or Schecter then they'll have a fight on their hands.

Idk if anyone here plays tech death but if you do how do you go about writing riffs?

How do you write something that actually fits together like if I have a cool chorus how do I write rest to it that it fits ?

if you can’t think of something you can search for inspiration in other songs or just you can just take a break it can be very helpful

plain vine

boreal haven
rancid yew
#

I have several PODs. To run them into actual cabs and stuff, just keep the pedals/effects/amp sims, disable the cab sims, and send the output to a power amp, the power amp is what will power the guitar cab speakers

rancid yew
#

You'd essentially use the X3 as a modeling preamp 🙂

#

In itself the X3 pro can't power a guitar cab without a power amp

#

You wouldn't want to exceed the wattage of the Mesa cab. Say it's rated 300 watts, you'd want to be at or below 300 watts at whatever the ohmage the cab is, let's just say 8. I will also say distortion raises RMS wattage a fair bit so you'd probably want a power amp that puts out half of what the cab itself can handle, it's a little excessive but far less likely to ever blow the speakers so it'll last a hell of a long time

#

Also wattage with speakers is only thermal handling, how much heat they can take.

#

More important is the xmax, mechanical limit. How much the speakers can push before they no longer function. You'll almost always kill a speaker mechancally before you ever do thermally

#

You could also run the X3 into an FRFR powered speaker and use the built in cab sims for that. I will say FRFRs always have bullshit wattage ratings so take them with a grain of salt. No FRFR is actually pushing 2,000 watts into a 1x10 or 1x12 speaker 😭, they use "peak" wattage which is next to meaningless. Peak is usually 2x program which is 2x RMS continuous, aka what the amp actually puts out. Companies even flub the RMS rating with crazy amounts of THD (total harmonic distortion)

fervent venture
#

Thats the idea (what all you said)

#

I also want to use pedals with it and ill probably get a 10 band eq for before the cab

rancid yew
#

That, the HD500X, and the 2.0 are my favs. The X3 has more options than any of them though

Hmmm

rancid yew

We has a new Neural update and here are the cliffnotes.

#
  1. Neural will be updating Darkglass Ultra to Ultimate with 4 new pedals, a new cab, and the bells and whistles. It will not be coming to QC as Doug no longer owns Darkglass.

  2. Arc Petrucci, Rabea, Misha, Henson, and Mayer are coming to QC.

  3. Tone King and Morgan to get X versions.

  4. Fortin NTS and Morello will not recieve X versions.

  5. Cali, Mesa Mark, Abasi, Asato, and Grano are under review for X update treatment. Note: partnership renewals may affect X update treatment.

Recommendations? 🤔🤝

bronze mortar
# boreal haven Recommendations? 🤔🤝

I don't use the in-amp settings or Tone Studio, but:
For a metal tone you want to subtly scoop mids, not by much but some, and don't use too much gain. Instead you want a tube screamer in front of the amp, no drive, level all the way up. This is called "boosting" the amp, and it adds the distortion. Go from there as you need, just use your ears and adjust from there.

It was on 3-1 preset, i switched it right before coming to Discord though.

#

I’ve played an rg8 and it was nice so these should be good as well

balmy vortex
#

if you get a good one yes

#

which isnt always the case sadly

wise shadow
#

and considering the multiscale this one looks more appealing

#

ive seen people complain about 12th neutral fret but tosin abasis 8 string guitars majority has the 12th neutral fret

wise shadow
balmy vortex
#

Thats just the inherit nature of cheaper instruments

wise shadow
#

oh

balmy vortex
#

Ive seen it all too much on guitars even over 1000€

#

Just because the specs seem good doesnt actually mean you'll get a good guitar that plays well put of the box

#

If we were to get 10 of those in at my job about 8-9 would have to get sent back for qc

wise shadow
#

what are the most common causes of this

#

neck issues?

balmy vortex
#

Neck, frets, electronics, top nut, finish problems. Its usually done on a guitar to guitar basis tho

#

Some have more of one and others might have a more even spread of problems

#

It doesnt help that our store's qc is insanely strict

wise shadow
#

i had to fix alot of issues with my current jackson dx10d which was second hand

#

the neck pickup was on the bridge and the bridge was on the neck, the floyd rose tuning stability was pure shit etc.

balmy vortex
#

Cheap guitars with cheap parts, no surprise

wise shadow
#

and the capacitors were dead right after a month of usage

its still a good guitar imho, just needed extra work

balmy vortex
#

Shooksicott capacitors? Why are there multiple caps in a guitar

i meant pots sorry

i took the capacitor myself also i thought the issue was about capacitors that caused my tone to sound horrible

0.7mm on 12th fret low e 1.1mm on high e 12th fret

#

minimal fret buzz

balmy vortex
#

People usually have it the other way around, lower on the high e and higher on the low e

wise shadow
#

i can get on well with it but it really needs a light touch

balmy vortex
#

Thats always the case with action that low

wise shadow
#

i really enjoy the ultra low action on low strings

balmy vortex
#

That makes fretwork even more of a necessity to get done well

wise shadow
#

the frets are worn

#

but it doesnt cause intonation problems or buzzing by themselves specifically

#

its due to the action of the guitar mostly

#

how low is your action on a 6 string typically?

balmy vortex
#

Im aiming for about 1mm flat on everything

Which my guitar does without problems at all

Yeah one probably from omega themselves

But this profile im using i captured of an actual amp personally. Had to do a bunch of stuff to get it to sound right

wise shadow
#

yeah the profiles dont sound good by themselves most of the time

it needs a bunch of tinkering

balmy vortex
#

That's why i took the chance to capture one when we had the actual head in the store LUL

wise shadow

the kemper profiler player cant profile cuz its the compact version of the kempers

balmy vortex

I know, a kemper in general wouldn't ever cross my mind with what i look for in a modeller

why

wise shadow
balmy vortex

the transpoze sucks on kemper

the good profiles are rare to find and most of them need tinkering
