#🦋The legend of the SFF productivity workstation laptop? ❤

i am talking deta e
cough cough
i know, still not as accurate
^from the prestige
what does the dell have
CNC still better
its also heavier
delta e < 1
yea but more stable, higher quality feeling and higher precision
more stable? fym
if you drop it
that makes absolutely no sense
yes it does
then explain it, because it sounds like nonsense
if you drop it
and?
and what i dont understand
not heavier makes it more stable, but CNC aluminium is stronger than mold injection metal
but thats what i meant
and i couldnt understand because it was worded super weird
the io on the dell is ass
bluetooth??
and why would you need a mouse
its not a gaming laptop
not a given
because its still better than a trackpad?? also OP doesnt like trackpads
also if you have a mouse, you probably have a wireless mouse
most of the modern mouses with 2.4 ghz have usb-c
the g pro x 2 has usb a
yes, if you have a bluetooth mouse, connecting is not a problem. but the vast majority of mice (even modern ones) have usb a dongles
rave is a good thing. I'm asking why do people rave about MacBook if they get max 16GB and typically 8GB
I've heard of cloud ram or whatever and cloud computing but what is it?
this is concerning tbh
is MacBook just chrome book but better
chromebooks that can get 16GB ram and run macOS basically lol
it'd be worth it in a way if macOS is as efficient as chromeOS
No
macOS and chromeOS are completely different
And Mac silicone is completely different compared to Chromebook silicone (be it x86 or arm)
cloud ram is a joke (and used to scam unknowing individuals), cloud computing is servers in the cloud - someone else's computer
because upgrading from 8 to 16GB of ram is $200, and you can only get 16, even if you want more
Its fake
you mean like the entire GPD lineup?
cause that solves all your needs
unless your needs are CUDA
or you have very small pockets
Shenzhen GPD Technology Co., Ltd. - GPD Pocket 2 GPD WIN 2 GPD Pocket GPD WIN GPD XD Plus GamePad Headheld Game Console Video Game Play Mini Laptop
Cuz getting 16gb ram costs 200$ extra
Although u will never be able to sit down and work on this
You want a dock and moniter everywhere u go
I wouldn’t get a gpd win
The screen is too small for non-gaming uses
Multitasking would suck if it even works at all
The requirements is pocketable
You arent gonna fit a regular laptop in a pocket
At least not in a normal person’s pants pocket
It’s not required
The gpd win is all gaming, but OP isn’t gaming. And with that small of a screen, multitasking is going to suck
What's gpd
company that makes handheld gaming computers
ohhh wait I've heard of these guys
Apparently as the years go on they release more convincing tech
more convincing?
Like I think Linus did a video
Tech that can do more
Each year it just gets better and better
Are these micro handheld computers?
?
Product - Shenzhen GPD Technology Co., Ltd.
Yes this is exactly what I was thinking of
dont
its going to suck for multitasking
Okay so now I really want to know the viability of these in 2024
they're literally just for gaming
hence the 8840U and the built in controller
I should be able to browse the web and connect a mouse
And write notes tho
I think some are more gaming centric than others
this is too small for multitasking
Eehh maybe
I don't usually do window left and window right multitasking
I have things minimized usually
Cause yeah screen width does play a major role in that
youll be able to see more of a note with more screen real estate
Like my current laptop can have discord on the left. Notion in the center or center right and copilot preview all up at the same time on the right
I need this and ipfs.exe
most likely
although discord has a finite amount of shrinkage (i.e. you can only make it so small)
whats that
But what I've noticed is inside notion you can hide sidebar and/or hide copilot etc and it will completely change the scale of notions pages
And the smaller it gets. It's absolutely the worst
Discord doesn't really have this issue
But it can get to a point of being a "wrap text?" Issue
If I were to go for a micro handheld computer? Would it basically be gpd win as my only option?
they have some of the best, if not the best, small laptops
I still might not. But definitely worth a consideration
I have ruled out chromebooks. I still thinking on MacBook tho
It's really not bad advice
even if you dont do split-screen multitasking
skill issue
Just get a monitor for the desk and connect the GPD to it
what about when youre not at the desk....like half the day
So you have pocketable PC while on the go and big monitor in the office/at home
The PC is in the pocket
You can go gpd wins strat
Just get multiple 1080 27in mlniters
And set them up wherever u work
why get an ultra portable laptop and then proceed to not make it portable
Tbh this is al bs
Get a 15in 2in1 thin n light
Way nicer on eyes
And you can multitask
Alongside
Your computer lasting more then a year
true
msi prestige ffs
dont buy a macbook or a gpd win unless you can test them out to make sure it has good workflow for you
why shoul i not get a gpd
I literally already told you
Small screen size for office-type work
gaming focused so you’ll always have a controller strapped to it
Don’t buy it unless you can test it out to make sure it works well for your workflow

so you just think the whole form factor is bad for me
but aren't there any without like a game controller permanently connected
I definitely agree with this video that 13” is minimum
So just buy the msi prestige
It’ll be amazing for you
its kind of the maximum for me
but idk if i really could go lower either tbh
i could if the bezels arent fucked
Maximum what
And I’m saying less than 13” is too small
Unless, once again, you can test it out and your workflow isn’t hindered by the size
yea, 13" is just enough anything less is unuseable for day-to-day use
13 in is barely enough
15 is proper for good 3+ hour constant usage tbh
If she wants a small laptop (because of some random ass insecurity ig), 13” will still do the job
Can confirm. The size and weight of today's 15/16" laptops feel like yesterday's 13.3/14" laptops because the bezels and chassis have shrunk a lot. Tis partly why I was okay with buying a 16" Lenovo last year.
I second this. A 14 is like 15 of olden times and so on
Also can confirm. The 14" Latitude 7420(?) I use at work gets hot AF just sitting on the desk, let alone in my lap during meetings.
I have a 4070 and r9 in. 13in sub 2.5lbs package. I know this better then anyone too. A nice 15 is the best
The msi prestige is the worst small laptop you can get. It is very cheaply built and despite its name is actually aimed towards the very low end market
Get literally anything else. An ideapad, a vivobook, whatever. Just dont get a prestige.
how did you come to that conclusion?
Trialling multiple prestiges
Either in store or borrowed for a few days
They also generally have low sRGB screens, though this is also the case for cheap ideapads
Cheap vivobooks uses low end OLED which is the best in the price class i guess but then you’ll have to deal with asus warranty if something goes wrong
TLDR; save up and get a macbook air 13” or suffer with budget windows laptop hell
macbook only has 16GB ram
(Or just grab a GPD and suffer windows hell but at least it’s in your pocket)
and the prestige i found has an oled that covers 100% of the dci-p3 color space
Unless i missed further conversations, last I checked 16gb RAM fits into the original “16-32gb RAM” requirement
we decided 32 would be better to help this laptop last longer
Hmmm, havent tried that yet. What’s battery size, cooling, and hinge like though?
MSI used to have (and to some extent still does) shit hinges and small batteries
im sorry what?
no $600 laptop is gonna have those specs
literally not possible
showcase (review? idk, its sponsored but seems to be benchmarked, not just regurgitating manufacturer specs)

Yeah i guess there’s been quite a lot of inflation lately
So $700 should be able to get you 16gb ram with a midrange ryzen and a low end OLED if you get a good deal
Currently there’s this deal though
13” just isnt a popular size anymore, everyone’s going 14
And the best value deals are 16”
OP wants a small laptop though
i dont disagree with 13", but ive said many times not to go below 13"
watching a shortcircuit about the prestige 16, and alex says that msi's build quality has improved a lot over the last couple years
I don't trust someone who liked a MacBook air13
Windows hell 3x better then any macos
Really depends on your workflow, but yes
sorry guys i was on vacation, and i was out of town
here's, i think, a better snapdragon x powered device. it has much more reasonable price differences in the different options
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/configurator/cto/index.html?bundleId=83EDCTO1WWUS1
Use Lenovo's Configurator to customize your device and make it perfect for your needs. Choose specs, features, and accessories to create your ideal device.
I had a really really close opportunity to buy the van--Ford transit
ik it's off topic. but I'm really upset he refused sale to me
it was only $9400
2019
it's cause I wasn't local ig.
but I'm really upset. that was going to be life changing
Ohhhh yes Snapdragon
i hope Snapdragon kick AMD's Ass cuz i dont want an AMD dark ages 😭 cuz INTEL ant doing shit
Wdym AMD dark ages
what laptops have this cpu? AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D
and what laptops have GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU?
every laptop that you shouldn't buy
x3d is for gaming only, which is not your main focus
that's true
for the 4090, there are quite a few, though most, if not all will be 16"+
but again, you arent gaming so it would be a waste
yeah a gpu like that on a laptop would be pretty overkill for me
but not if it's cheap
but if its like expensive af yeah no point
cause laptops dont last as long
its not cheap
dont even look at them. its a gaming chip for gaming only laptops. you arent gaming. dont get a gaming chip
its hard to justify that since a desktop is like the same price
yeah thats true
wha's also really nice about the 13in laptop is that it will be able to fit into more nooks and crannies in the van
i was so damn close to having that van
im so mad
since you're not gaming (except League), integrated will be fine. which is why i keep pushing the MSI prestige
im happy with it still
is there anything else like the prestige that's really similar
or that has a strongeer cpu,
idc so much about the gpu
maybe one with a 13900hx, but those are mostly gaming machines
but tbh it is interesting that i could have something like this
for just a couple hundred more
you can get that if you want, but the 4060 wouldn't be very helpful
and it would add some weight
14in is pretty small
i still think the 155H would be better (the msi prestige), even though the single threaded speed is lower (which apparently is super important in passmark). it has a lower TDP and more cores
This is usually because those are the configurations offered by the manufacturer - think of these options as more of a SKU chooser than a customization tool. Dell, Lenovo, and HP do the same kind of thing for some of their laptops too - if you choose an Intel i7 CPU, you "must" also get 32GB RAM either due to some weird compatibility requirements, or usually just because that's how they stock / build that particular configuration. I do agree it's a bit silly if you want a faster CPU but not more memory, but alas, tis how it do be.
Generally I feel like it's gpu and memory. Not cpu.
I've seen both. Depends on the generation of hardware in the laptop and the manufacturer.
Well yeah. Anything new is gpu and ram together. Most hav static cpu. Like Dell or rog or msi
What do you guys mean by cpu+ram together vs gpu+ram together
gpu+ram together is usually tightly optimized/controlled by the gpu manufacturer
whereas for cpu+ram, you can have from 4GB to 128/192
Is this a laptop only thing?
And what does this mean exactly
Is it like cpu that has the ram on the chip
And like gpu that has the ram on the gpu chip?
pure satire
no. it means that there's only one configuration of ram for a given gpu chip, or cpu chip in a laptop
Im really liking these gpds tho. It's kind of exactly what I was looking for.
apple does have that kind of ram, they call it "unified memory" as the gpu and cpu both access the same memory chips, and they are on-die
trust me, you're going to hate the 10" screen
Whyy
That's what I meant I think. Like does it mean that some laptops have cpus with ram on them or gpus with ram on them like with apple. Or are you saying they are still separate but that sometimes the gpu talks to the ram more in a gpu+ram laptop setup?
Cause I thought it was always cpu+ram
the ram for basically all laptops, be it cpu or gpu, are still discrete chips that you would find on a ram stick, but they're soldered to the motherboard, closer to the cpu (and for the gpu, usually in the same configuration that it would be on a dgpu that you would plug into a desktop
apple is so far the only company that has put their memory on-die for their laptops
afaik anyway
if you were to imagine this layout transplanted exactly into a laptop, thats basically what gpu + memory is
for cpu, it depends on the laptop, and does not have as highly optimized ram layouts because it doesnt need to be as fast as vram
Okay so nothing like what I was saying just now. It's what I thought before.
And gpu ram in laptops is like vram on a dgpu so normal.
Laptop ram proper is just apart of the main board. My bad.
And okay the thing I was saying does exist but only apple does it.
And when you say gpu + memory. It refers to the separate gpu board in the laptop since it's not really a graphics card anymore.
And gpu is the graphics processor chip and the + memory part refers to what would be basically vram
yeah
though its usually not a separate board
everything's soldered to the same pcb
Oh wow so they really do translate a mini section of the main board to be the gpu + memory (vram)
yeah, pretty much
OH Which must be obviously a different section than the cpu + memory
That's what you guys meant. You were talking about 2 different sections of the main board
Which is similar to a desktop obviously but has its nuances
As I noted above, it entirely depends on the particular model / series of laptop. Take the XPS 16 9640 for example - try changing the CPU, Memory, or GPU and you'll see it forces certain other changes to happen.

yes
oh gee thanks again Discord - auto scrolling to keep up with the messages failed to work. 09CreeperBoy expanded on this greatly with the correct information: there are only certain configs that manufacturer's allow, either for technical or logical reasons. (For example: few if any people would ever pair an Intel i9 CPU and RTX 4070 (mobile) with only 8GB memory and 256GB storage.)
laptop manufacturers need to allow the maximum ram configuration with any other cpu/gpu
i would totally understand requiring higher memory with faster components, but maybe you want 32GB of ram without a gpu or with a slower cpu because you have lots of browser tabs open
Exactly - having minimum requirements for some configs makes sense (ie: at least 16GB RAM if you want the top-spec CPU+GPU), but restricting an increase of RAM or Storage to higher-spec CPU / GPU configs seems silly. What if I want to open 9,001 Chrome tabs, Dell? Give me all the RAM!
oh yeah and storage. maybe i dont want 2TB of storage because im barely gonna use 200GB
Sure someone has already said this, but a: Ally, folding mini keyboard, mini mouse and mini powerbank would fit in pockets. No bag needed.
Offers full PC experience.
It’s not for gaming, and that 7” screen should suck for office use
Yhea, not the best use case then. When the limit is pocket sized and phones are a no go... this is a brutal challenge
I use this with my phone when there are no other options. It fits in the pocket.
Maybe add them big screen glasses for a large display that is pocket size?
its not for gaming. the 4070 would be a waste, and add weight
this is also $300 off...just get this like we said so long ago

Nice to see this moving along quickly

13" framework with a 7840hs inside, or a legion 5 slim 14" would be good choices tbh
the only downside on the 14" legion 5 slims is soldered on ram
ooof that ram
