Tis usually around now

Though if the evil Facebook overlords want them to do something it might get complicated xD

peak coral
#

supposed to have been 30 minutes ago, approximately ... but they never start on time, and have been up to 2 hours late before

merry karma
#

Well twitch says the time is 1am to 2:15am EU... (CBA to change timezone). Which is a good estimate of when it starts

knotty flint
#

Probably too busy making OnlyPlane and "content" thonk /s

#

Although it should be in 10 minutes or so, they usually stream it around 4-6 AM for me

#

Which is an hour after the community calendar n such

#

Hey guys, guess what

#

WAN show is late

#

Looks like I get my free space on bingo again tonight

knotty flint
#

LMG's probably running on Valve time schedule ever since their visit. Owell, time to watch RTFM for a bit until WAN show (probably) goes live.

I dunno, if LMG was operating under Valve rules they'd have to up the ante

I mean, yeah, there's way more than 3 WAN shows.

Been watching WAN on twitch because it's in sync better, but I agree with Linus... it has a very toxic chat

knotty flint

Hence Floatplane. linusKappa

Is the audio weird? Like Linus seems a lot louder than Luke

brave bridge

knotty flint

Linus talking about "legally" pirating windows, interesting.

Let's see how long until that backfires.

#

@ guru3D

#

Altho its a 500 gb not 1 tb and is not full

grizzled urchin
brave bridge
#

my win7 liscences are on netbooks that cannnot handle win10 , so I might need to buy some OS-less PCs to get the liscences valid and tied to win10/11

knotty flint
#

Side note: since there are a lot of you who might be concerned about their SSD's TLC/QLC/specs, get SSD-Z and it'd be easier to figure out some specs. Should be helpful with finding out the firmware, the name of the model exactly, the interface etc etc

#

It also has its own benchmark included w/ 4K, IOPS, sequential and access time (could be done to any storage on your pc, even USBs)

#

Basically CPU-Z but for your SSD.

sharp tree
#

just tested, my p2 registers as unknown

knotty flint
#

Still shows the model name and the more important names to compare with the old vs "swapped" NAND and has benchmarks as well as other useful features

#

There are things that are unknown but overall you can use the model name alone to figure it out

#

Some companies change the model number despite things like this, especially when refurbishing products so this does help to an extent.

In response to the question about network switches, any chance we could get a video at some point that helps people learn more about homelabs, networking, and how to set up our routers and devices to make it easy to share files across our local network (and maybe how to set up lan gaming in general since many gamers like myself probably have no idea how to set it up for games like the original starcraft anymore and i'm sure lots of people would love to do it);

#

I've been learning a lot from the #networking channel so seeing some of that invaluable info in video form would be really helpful;

#

networkcanuck has also been a huge help;

grizzled urchin
grizzled urchin

Depends on per case, but should head to #tech-chat-1 to discuss it further or see if anyone else has had the same hardware.

They already do that with WAN show (given that it's always a few days after)

merry karma
#

i think facebook sponsored it

#

also why mobile only 🙄

knotty flint
#

I recall the facebook audio thing won't work on PC and is a mobile exclusive feature

#

Can't find it on my web either

#

Guessing they need to "fit in with the hip kids", otherwise the same feature would be available on the web (like how YT shorts is implemented, but at least that's still accessible )

Worst part is it's iOS exclusive so you cannot use android emulators to bypass it

Part of the reason so many people attack ereader tech imo is they haven't seen how far it has come and that many people such as myself have medical reasons not to use oled or led/lcd at night such as sleep disorders or eye strain. I think for people such as myself, we're more than willing to pay a premium for ereaders because the alternative is impacts on our health long term which is far more impactful than the price premium;

Hey tatsu, the best place to put video ideas is in the forum here: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1322697-thread-for-linus-tech-tips-video-suggestions/

Writers check fairly regularly so they may see it and reach out if interested. If you want Linus himself to see it, it's pretty much a random chance he may respond on Twitter or during WAN lol
*though don't spam either or I'm sure he won't want to check it out lol

The thing about gentoo is you choose if you want it to be stable or not if your using the stable version of gentoo its just about as stable as debian but if your on testing its like arch

opal wagon
#

gentoo isnt for beginners

drowsy comet
#

my example was you could have it like debian where its stable and have it like arch where its not

round bramble
#

oh sorry must have misread what you said, i thought that's what you implied

drowsy comet
round bramble
#

the one thing i liked about gentoo, at least back when i used it, was the documentation

drowsy comet
#

@round bramble Yeah tbh its better then arch its more straight forward and user friendly

round bramble
#

i genuinely can't remember why i went from gentoo to arch

drowsy comet
#

@round bramble The main reason why most people do that is because its very hard to mantian if the system breaks it would take longer to fix it then just reinstall the entire os

round bramble
#

for some reason gentoo SEEMINGLY has this aura of "complicated wall of text + dependency hell" thing

drowsy comet
#

@round bramble Oh fuck dependcy hell

round bramble
#

which, i mean, that's basically as true for any OS where you compile packages

drowsy comet
#

It's not gentoo's fault and I understand why they did it that way but it is fucking annoying to deal with depencies in gentoo

round bramble
#

is it any worse than other OS's where you can compile things?

#

arch, BSD...

#

though maybe the thing with gentoo is you CAN'T go binary if you wanted? i can't remember anymore, is gentoo source ONLY basically? (without counting custom ebuild servers or whatever)

steady stone
#

im lazy

#

AUR easier

drowsy comet
# round bramble though maybe the thing with gentoo is you CAN'T go binary if you wanted? i can't...

The thing is the reason why the package manager is so good on gentoo is not simply just because you compile shit from source that is way to high-level of a explination its how it manages those packages hense the name package manger the flags on gentoo makes it so much more convient then going into the files of software and shit its just a more desktop orianted source based distro compared to other stuff its meant to be simple to use but not let that simplicity hurt the freedom of the user gentoo is not trying to be hard or anything it just has to because thats the kind of distro it is a distro for enthusisasts and I hate when it is compared to arch arch is not good because its more flexible then other systems its good cause its easier to configure

#

and people intrepet that as a personal attack agianst people who use arch its not its litterly the arch philocphy just being easy to customize but also being easy to use

round bramble
drowsy comet
#

and yeah thats the reason its good not just because it compiles stuff from the source code

round bramble
#

oh yea, ofc

#

that's what i mean, i feel like gentoo has this reputation of being this crazy hard distro

#

which is odd to me

#

anyway now i'm on thinkbsd and loving it

drowsy comet
#

oh yeah I love freebsd also used it for a while

round bramble

we dont know yet
But probably Pop OS or Ubuntu, that seemed like what they were leaning towards

#

and id have to agree with that choice, those are some of the best distros for new users

ive heard linux mint and maybe manjaro (but that last one could be a touch more advanced) are good options too for newbies, but i havent tried them

they...what? on a linux distro? that's new

hardy harbor
#

though you're right, I should see what that paid version offers

round bramble
#

unless its like red hat where it's pretty much just support stuff (iirc)

hardy harbor
#

hm yeah the features that are paid are not ones I happen to need. Though yeah I would use Pop OS if I start feeling dissatisfied with Zorin

#

well actually I lied, I'll probably just go back to Ubuntu

Hm actually I don't like snap so much so probably will use Pop

opal wagon

you just get some wallpapers and additional layouts

opal wagon

hardy harbor

yeah, not apps I would need anyways

so youre paying for stuff that was already free KEKW

opal wagon

you're paying for isntllation support IMO that's what it always ends up being. which is pretty huge IMO

I was really hurt and sad to hear Linus outright dismiss Fedora Linux for gaming

#

as one of the developers of Fedora Linux that focuses on the desktop and gaming, I was really surprised to see him say that he wouldn't even consider Fedora Linux

#

some of the main folks that even do game development and porting of games to Linux use Fedora Linux (Ethan Lee [flibitijibibo], Ryan Gordon [icculus], etc.)

#

In the past few years, myself and other developers of Fedora Linux have been working on improving the desktop on multiple dimensions: responsiveness, power/thermal management, graphics performance, audio performance, and ease of use.

#

meh, okay no mentioning people

#

Ah well, apparently there's a link limit and mention restriction here, so I'll just say instead that we did a lot in Fedora Linux 33 and Fedora Linux 34 to improve the quality of the desktop and Fedora Linux 35 (releasing at the end of the month, beta out now) has a bit more coming too. I'm sure Anthony has been following the stuff going on in Fedora and can point to the Fedora Changes centered around desktop and gaming done recently, since it comes up in the Linux news quite a lot.

Imho they should've done Linus vs Anthony for the Linux challenge for a chance of redemption, then again that would be one-sided just like that challenge.

twin fox

here's an ordered top 5 list of what I personally would recommend to Linus:
1. pop_os Pop!_OS
2. kubuntu Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE)
3. opensuse openSUSE Tumbleweed
4. fedora Fedora
5. mint Linux Mint

I'm more excited than ever tbh, Linus goes Linux, Valve makes Linux hardware which seems to not suck this time, and Linux is probably starting to get mainstream

tulip glacier

Sucks that LMG is stuck in the adobe pipeline. Cause pop os and davinci resolve man on man so great

but network mounting your home directory so all your files and configs sync across your PCs, absolute bliss

tulip glacier

or well, I'm switching to Nextcloud sync so I get a little better performance but still, not something easily doable on Windows

it took a few afternoons to get it perfected

round bramble

but i love the idae, websites these days are way too complex

#

lol i'd have to learn css first

my workplace has this website that is entirely dynamic

like there are literally NO LINKS

I mostly looked at W3Schools for ideas, feel free to steal the stylesheet and the basic layout off my website if you want :)

round bramble

i basically want to do a very basic 'profile' website so nothing too complex

twin fox

if it's a single webpage then that's actually really simple

I just finish watch the podcast and noticed that Dune released a statement today A personal message from our CEO

Greetings everyone,

Every backer of the campaign has shown their support and trust in Dune by backing and purchasing the Dune Pro. I am truly grateful for your support, yet at the same time, disappointed that I have not yet delivered to you. I take full responsibility for this and I am deeply sorry to everyone.

As certain expectations have not been met, you may have felt frustrated, anxious and understandably pessimistic about Dune. This is especially saddening as Dune was founded on the promise of giving you the “Power to Choose”. You chose us and so far, we have fallen short on delivering this promise to you.

There could not have been a worse time to embark on this journey. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unforeseen challenges to everyone, both personally and economically. As I look back during this period, there are times I should have done better. From today, we will be implementing immediate corrective steps to regain your confidence in our team. This is part of a comprehensive plan to greatly improve our communication with you by listening more to our backers who brought our project to life.

I am confident, as a result of these actions, Dune will emerge as a company our backers can trust. I have committed myself to provide more frequent and reliable updates on our progress.

You deserve better, a lot better, from our team and from me. Nothing is more important than your trust. Our next Indiegogo update will include information regarding shipping dates. This will be the first step to rebuild your trust and all of us at Dune hope you will give us an opportunity to do so. ```

do you really think Linus isn't going to blow up Anthony on Teams whenever he has a question?

keen bloom
# potent finch I guess I don't understand what you mean by 'manual intervention'

manual intervention is when, by mistake, there is a problem. Like an upgrade will not go forward unless you edit this config, or pass this option to pacman. They are easy as one liners copy paste most of the time, but you need to keep an eye on them. This mistake happens sometimes as humans aren't perfect and it's rolling release while keeping itself bleeding edge package versions.

lol IG

though i'd argue those still exist under Debian/Ubuntu, as we've seen

I forget, have they found an excuse to give Luke a free 30 series card?

he's going to be having a fun time if he's rocking a 980 Ti or something

But I do agree, the new set where they're looking more at each other than at the camera is a little wonk for a show that is primarily video-streamed and not primarily a podcast like it would be for Carpool Critics or whatever it's called now. Seems like a lot of the inspiration for this set was taken from the experience there, but I think it feels more awkward when they have to turn and look at the camera but their natural position is them looking off into the distance

#

(Especially since every other WAN Show design ever was them looking directly at the camera naturally, but turning to engage in conversation with each other for asides, then turning back to the camera to continue the show)

so far, to me, I'm getting exactly what I wanted out of Jake's and Linus' journey. They have the right kind of open mindset if a little bit under the yoke of the sensationalism there's been around the linux crowd, but that'll sort itself out soon.

They're doing the right thing by hardlining going it alone and without anyone acting as their crutch. this will send a much more positive message as an end-result.

The bleeding edge hardware is going to cause them a tad more issues then your typical user but it's only ever a matter of how hard you google. they'll also figure that out quick.

I remember when I first switched to Linux on my main machine

#

I used Ubuntu, since I actually used it before (had it on a Mac computer because MacOS on it started acting up), gave it a spin for about 2-3 months

#

Then I discovered KDE Plasma, so I switched to Kubuntu, then KDE Neon

#

Then I started finding myself not liking how Debian user packages worked, so I started searching for something that wasn't Debian based

#

Found ArchLinux (Fedora sounds interesting but at the time I didn't consider it), saw vanilla ArchLinux was scary so I started looking for something that was based on it xD That's when I found Manjaro, so I gave that a spin and actually really liked the AUR repo

#

Stayed on there for the longest, then switched to EndeavourOS for a bit then back to Manjaro (also started DE hopping during the time of using Manjaro, tried basically every DE except the tiling window managers and qutefish, found myself staying with KDE Plasma)

#

And very recently, just switched back to EndeavourOS for a particular package that I didn't feel like compiling was available on the main ArchLinux repos (which Manjaro didn't have added). Also trying out XFCE because Im having this strange screen tearing and constant browser/system lock ups and crashes on my desktop

I definitely have taken the approach with git before of going "I need this 1 short script file" and just copy the contents of the file and paste it into a file to save as a script.

I’m not sure if this point has been made earlier but I think that the problem with GitHub is not that it doesn’t have a download button but that GitHub is not the place to distribute stuff for end users. It is a git repository hosting service, it is designed to be used with git first and all the web based stuff is secondary (my opinion).

#

Though I do agree that it would be much simpler if they just add a download button. Atleast for Gists.

Watching the recent WAN show now. Regarding why people buy non-rechargeable batteries I think marketing is a big part of it. I bought myself a battery charger and rechargeable batteries long ago. Just yesterday I bought a robot toy for my nephew requiring two AA-batteries. The toy store only sold non-rechargeable to go with it.

#

There is also a small price and capacity difference, but being able to recharge is convenient imo. We also have good battery recycling systems (every store selling batteries has to accept old batteries for free).

I wrote an extension that adds a download button

#

@keen bloom

twin fox
#

yes, GitHub used to be basically an implementation of Git, but nowadays it's the homepage of many open-source projects, I feel like they should recognise the change and embrace it, making things more welcoming to the end users (just these small things, like a download button, maybe put Releases between the file tree and Readme instead of to the side)

keen bloom
#

I agree but I still think that things like having to download scripts from GitHub makes Linux less end user friendly, Windows on the other hand does not even ship with a compiler by default

uneven veldt

#

just yes

keen bloom
#

So I'm watching the WAN show and I don't think all of Linus's complaints are entirely fair. First of all, Linus' setup is not standard and quite technical and complicated. I completely agree that Linux should be more user-friendly for non-technical "normal users" like he said so himself, but the problems he's experiencing aren't really what 99% of other people would face.
Also, Github != Linux. Just to make it clear. But I agree that downloading things from Github could be made easier. As a developer myself, I always forget where I find "releases" so I always just end up searching for it on google.
Another criticism he spends a fair bit of time on is file extensions. I'm not exactly sure what he is downloading and how, but I'll take his word that github fcks up and he downloads an HTML file, with the file extension of .sh.

Windows would just look at the file extension, and just open it with GNU Bash which would immediately crash. Linux on the other hand would detect that it's HTML using it's MIME type and open it in your browser where it at least works. The problem here is that he is so used to file extensions that he can't wrap his head around the OS just checking the contents instead of only relying on the name.

Some of these issues aren't Linux being worse than Windows, but rather Linux being different.

Lastly, you should always know what scripts you run. The car-comparison is stupid. Does he just install all .exe applicaitons that claim to do X and Y without doing some research on what it is that he's downloading?

# keen bloom So I'm watching the WAN show and I don't think all of Linus's complaints are ent...

The fact that his setup is weird is important. Everyone's setup is slightly different and while it might works out of a box "new comers" must be prepared that some gimmicks will not work on Linux or will require a bit of tinkering (same story other way, there are things that runs on Linux flawless but needs extra work on windows).

GitHub != Linux is true but how many Windows users needs to download something from GitHub to setup their PC's? And how many Linux users will need GitHub?

And basically same question for running some random scripts from the web. When setting up windows most people just need whatever apps and drivers came with system and couple more from well established developers or hardware manufacturers. With Linux you need to get help from community (which is great) and question is do you trust that community? Do you trust that .sh file that you're starting as root will do exactly what it says?

I made my move to Linux multiple times (mostly Ubuntu and other distros based on Ubuntu, but tried Fedora, Mandrake - yes I'm old, arch and many others) and it never stayed as my main OS for longer then a month. Mainly because of lack of compatibility with games (Linux don't have anything that more that I need and windows wouldn't have, so whenever I wanted to play games I ran windows and switching OS just to do other things was stupid). If SteamDeck will help with convincing developers to prepare their games for Linux it's going to be a great time. I can't wait how it's going to play out.

torpid shale
#

Although I'm really enjoying the Linux content, I guess I don't really understand the premise. It seems by "normal" user, we're talking about someone who just wants to play games and do some general productivity stuff (and isn't particularly technical). These kinds of users should probably just stick to Windows. Linux shines at developer / sysadmin type workflows where users are comfortable with the command line. That's been my experience anyway. I love Linux, but I use it when I'm coding, or messing around with servers. I don't rely on it for gaming 🙂

linux is already good for gaming.

And is full of untapped potential that's lying there waiting to be tapped into in order to make it impossible for windows gaming to catch up

#

it's going to take some time

#

it might even happen incredibly slowly

Linux is great for gaming, it just isn't as mainstream as Windows or even Macos (although in recent times Linux > Mac for gaming as macOS Catalina killed all games that were 32bit, which seems to be most), but Proton is solid as fuck, and my only issues I've had was the proprietary NVidia Driver being dog shit at times, and anticheat and DRM, all of which are fixable and are not Linux's fault, at all. Most of the time I get much better performance in my games, despite me running my Linux install on a 5400RPM Sata 3 drive, load times are definitely worse but that's the drive, but once all is up and runnng, much better, everything

so Linus mentioned on WAN Show that Louis Rossmann wanted a message spread about wanting to meet an EU regulator who was meeting Tim Cook (Apple CEO) in New York

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW1VJKDu4LU

plush cradle
#

I was just re-listening to the WAN Show and I think the problem Linus was having with the .sh file not working as-expected is a permissions problem.
there's a way to do it on the commandline, but I always just (in whatever gui file manager) right-click the file and click properties, then look for permissions or a checkbox that says something about execute/executable; check the checkbox to make it executable

#

Then the thing will execute when you try to open it, as-expected

#

one thing that occassionally annoys me about Linux is that sometimes it seems to take file permissions a little too seriously, and I've had relatively minor issues with file permissions that I don't remember ever having on win7

#

I don't remember ever noticing that file permissions were a thing when I was using win7 (which imo is the way it should be) unless I was trying to access stuff I wasn't supposed to have access to (teachers' stuff and other students' stuff on school computers, mostly)
Otherwise, I never had a problem using or accessing or modifying a file that I personally (as a person, not just the computer's user concept of whether I was the same user) made

serene arrow
#

chmod +x filename fixes that. Or in the case of a one time run, you can just type "sh filename.sh"

plush cradle
#

I think what happened was Linus ran into execute permission problems and didn't know he needed to make it executable, which why should he have to
I downloaded it, I should be able to execute it

#

I always thought that sometimes linux was a tad too "secure" for its own good, impacting usability

serene arrow
#

You can still run files by explicitly calling for them to run by prefacing with bash, sh, python ect

plush cradle
#

I seem to remember a meme about unix, you give somebody a document and the person receiving the document is like I don't have permission to read this

serene arrow
#

Linux needs to be secure though. It runs a good portion of the internet.

plush cradle
#

I could totally see this being a small mark against it for everyday use by at least normies, if not the vast majority of situations that don't require the most security

serene arrow
#

I don't use linux at home, but i've been working in the datacenter environment since 2012, and we're exclusively linux at both companies i worked for. So i'm just used to it at this point.

plush cradle
#

Why should normal people have to know that execute permissions are a thing that they have to set
It should just work, but it doesn't, from the pov of the vast majority of people
especially if you downloaded it, why shouldn't you be able to execute it

plush cradle
serene arrow
#

For normal people, i'd argue that viruses and malware would spread less easily if people couldn't just run what they downloaded

plush cradle
keen bloom
plush cradle
#

Linux has conditioned me that every time there's a permissions problem on the commandline I just add sudo in front, or in a file manager if there's a permissions problem (other than executable) I just open folder as root/open in root instance of file manager
at some point, more security (without the regular users understanding or agreeing with it) just encourages more getting around the security by any means necessary, which is at least as bad security as if people could use the stuff how they expected in the first place

I had been dual or multi-booting win7 with Linux for a number of years when I finally decided to quit Windows in 2017 because it was getting worse and not better and there was an alternative that I found more easily acceptable to me

it seems to me that safeguards should only exist when a well-informed user who cares about their own well-being would willingly place them on theirself for their own good, like how you'd (hopefully) use ear plugs or other hearing protection to protect your hearing when there's gonna be loud stuff, or wear sunglasses when it's too bright, or use much better eye protection when welding, or wear fall protection when you're on scaffolding that may not be as stable as it should be, or have guards on some mechanical saw things so that you're less likely to cut your finger(s) off, or the trash mechanism on your computer so you're less likely to delete something without thinking about it enough (or at least you have to kinda consider it twice), or wear gloves if the situation calls for it (not with rotating machinery though, apparently)

I feel like in that spirit, some things should be warned/protected against, but if you insist a couple times it should let you do it
I feel like some stuff isn't warned/protected against enough, and other stuff is too protected against.
