#the-wan-show

supposed to have been 30 minutes ago, approximately ... but they never start on time, and have been up to 2 hours late before
Well twitch says the time is 1am to 2:15am EU... (CBA to change timezone). Which is a good estimate of when it starts
Probably too busy making OnlyPlane and "content"
/s
Although it should be in 10 minutes or so, they usually stream it around 4-6 AM for me
Which is an hour after the community calendar n such
Hey guys, guess what
WAN show is late
Looks like I get my free space on bingo again tonight
LMG's probably running on Valve time schedule ever since their visit. Owell, time to watch RTFM for a bit until WAN show (probably) goes live.
Soon (tm)

I dunno, if LMG was operating under Valve rules they'd have to up the ante
I mean, yeah, there's way more than 3 WAN shows.
not only will it bee SOON(TM) but we'll have Steve from GN & Jay-z
Jay from 2 cents? or Jay-z? YES
New rap album announced in the far future. Thanks ian, back to you Steve.
that's Dr. Ian McCuckDuck to you
DuckDuckPotato?
I don't catch the show live often... this is later than normal, right?
up
I shoudl start streaming right before WAN show so I could get some followers that would be waiting for linus
Been watching WAN on twitch because it's in sync better, but I agree with Linus... it has a very toxic chat
Hence Floatplane.
Is the audio weird? Like Linus seems a lot louder than Luke
that's just normal 😉
Linus talking about "legally" pirating windows, interesting.
Let's see how long until that backfires.
what the hell i literally just bought a 970 evo plus and installed windows 10 on it like 2 hours ago and now linus is saying this lmao
Rip
Test it out on crystaldiskmark and if there is an obvious speed change, you could try returning it
I have three spare win7 liscences that I could use for win 11 upgrades, right?
also got 1 win8 and two win10 machiens too
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/samsung-seemingly-caught-swapping-components-in-its-970-evo-plus-ssds/ Has benchmarks too if you want to compare.
I mean, I think you can go from 7 to 10 to 11, since the upgrade is free for 10 users.
Don't quote me though since I haven't tried upgrading yet
I don't know my brain wanted to see that as "Pentium 2"
TLC most def, not QLC
I'll try to find a CBM for it though
@ guru3D
Altho its a 500 gb not 1 tb and is not full
the top read and write lineup with the specs (3500 MB/s, 3300 MB/s)
thanks!
my win7 liscences are on netbooks that cannnot handle win10 , so I might need to buy some OS-less PCs to get the liscences valid and tied to win10/11
Side note: since there are a lot of you who might be concerned about their SSD's TLC/QLC/specs, get SSD-Z and it'd be easier to figure out some specs. Should be helpful with finding out the firmware, the name of the model exactly, the interface etc etc
It also has its own benchmark included w/ 4K, IOPS, sequential and access time (could be done to any storage on your pc, even USBs)
Basically CPU-Z but for your SSD.
it doesnt recognize newer ssds
just tested, my p2 registers as unknown
Still shows the model name and the more important names to compare with the old vs "swapped" NAND and has benchmarks as well as other useful features
There are things that are unknown but overall you can use the model name alone to figure it out
Some companies change the model number despite things like this, especially when refurbishing products so this does help to an extent.
In response to the question about network switches, any chance we could get a video at some point that helps people learn more about homelabs, networking, and how to set up our routers and devices to make it easy to share files across our local network (and maybe how to set up lan gaming in general since many gamers like myself probably have no idea how to set it up for games like the original starcraft anymore and i'm sure lots of people would love to do it);
I've been learning a lot from the #networking channel so seeing some of that invaluable info in video form would be really helpful;
networkcanuck has also been a huge help;
didn't really help, no useful information unless i didn't have the box or the sticker of the ssd. thanks though!
Yeah but samsung didn't here according to the article
You can't see the part number which distinguishes the newer, slower drive from the older, faster one on the box—you need to check the PN field in the top center of the label on the drive itself.
they only changed the PN number on the sticker
Depends on per case, but should head to #tech-chat-1 to discuss it further or see if anyone else has had the same hardware.
Note to self: don't say "laywers" in your timestamps otherwise YT might hide your comment
missed the show live and it's not Floatplane
its on youtube
Does everyone have this red line?
Yep
whoops, seems like Linus forgot to unselect a source in OBS
during wan show linus said that he had talk with wendell about linux being future of desktop. is there any VOD of that podcast/show or whatever they had?
There was mention of a facebook like audio room or something. Its not something I'm really familiar with
FB dropped the ball lol, I can't find hide nor hair of it
I just noticed this. What happened to the wanshow notifications channel. I have the role for it but it doesn't show up in the channel list.
I think the Social Media Coordinator is Slacking lol
I think wan show notification hasn't worked for at least the past year and a half
I did get the notification from just it hitting the ltt releases channel. tends to take a bit for that to show up
Someone posted a rip here for people who don't want to run the Facebook app on their phone, which is the only way to get it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFjgkoRmeaI&ab_channel=RainyRainer
Recording of Linus and Wendell's discussion on a Facebook audio room about Linux.
They could do the wan show in a/as a stage event.
Savage Jerky: Use offer code LTT to save 10% on Savage Jerky at https://lmg.gg/savagejerky
Freshbooks: For your unrestricted 30 days free trial, go to https://www.freshbooks.com/WAN and enter in “The WAN Show” in the how
Madrinas: Head over to https://www.madrinascoffee.com/linus and use offer code LINUS to get 40% off Madrinas Coffee product...
Meant like a discord stage lol
I mean, Discord podcast is a thing but it takes some time to configure, and people would be annoyed by pings or the alerts. Might as well just keep it on three platforms, more than enough already.
yes, Discord stage WAN show for the 3 people that would show up
boop
countdown to them being late ... again
They're already late to the Facebook live audio room but they're doing right now, or at least the most be doing right now, I wonder if that means wan so it's going to be later than usual
There we go, they started the audio room
so anyone know of a twitch channel that one can sit in before the wan show to participate in a raid?
the first person to just set up a stream to do that, it could be pretty lame and people would still watch
WAN show when?
whenever they feel like it
where can these be found.. just so can reeee about wan show xD
I mean people are already sitting in the chat for LTT on twitch
Its supposed to be 5:00 pm Friday, Pacific Time (PT)
so 39 minutes ago
but they are NEVER on time
would be nice if they would like tweet something out on fridays about when they might come on....so people are not always sitting around for nothing....
literally just about to ask when they are going to go live lmao
lol its 10:43 AM in aussie land
its post midnight in europe...
its 8:45 in this side of aussie land
yup
Meanwhile I'm in Sydney eek
Not new, just used to them never being on time ... ever .. last time they were on time I think was at the house
Thats probably true, been watching for 4 years and they've never been on time or early
aww and two aussies fell in love from meeting in ltt chat and lived happily ever after....THE END....jk jk..
our governments would not allow us to meet, so its never happening
Were going to be allowed international travel before we can enter each other states lmfao
damn corona-virus preventing my ltt community fan fiction from coming true.... :p
A couple of months ago it would have been possible
Until delta came in
Now we gotta get vaccinated before we can do anything
yeah... I cant wait to go home, but I am not looking forward to having my kids in school given the numbers 😦
wish more people would just put on a mask and get stuck
jk jk...unless
Masks became mandatory for everyone again where I'm at, not that I had stopped wearing it
to many unvaxed people having parties in bondi starting this latest lockdown
so many Kiwi's and Aussies here this week, I hope when the event is over they can actually go home
no wan this week?
yet
just extremely late
No announcement on if it's been cancelled yet
the title just changed so they are getting ready
live?
Yup live
linus doesn't wear pants on stream confirmed
I spy a washer and dryer
6pm pst is the new timeslot? They've been starting around 6pm for over a *2 months.
should have discord notification for wan live
check their twitch
linus has the munchies
There we go!!!! On YT now!
linus does not even drink booze
Hi everyone
I'm tatsu, co-founder of Sanctuary RTS
I'd like to get in touch with Linus, as I'm pretty sure he'd be interested in my in-development game
heck maybe it's something he wants to talk about on the WAN show
I don't know
in any event he'll probably want to get to know more and get involved in some form
is posting links to youtube here cool?
Ok i'll take that as a yes
here's me and nine (other founder) being interviewed by Gyle :
^ as an RTS fan, I support this
Can the wan show be uploaded on the same day on Spotify
Wonder if the court filing a permanent injunction in the Apple vs epic case will make it on Wan Show or techlinked
Or both
Since WAN Show ends after we're out of office on Fridays, it has to wait till we're back on Monday. There's a chance that it gets uploaded same day when the podcast is filmed in person again but
colour me surprised ... late again
are they facebook streaming (and i guess it will be after that...)
They honestly could use the google podcast instead of the facebook one so that way they can allow non-mobile users to tune in
They already do that with WAN show (given that it's always a few days after)
I recall the facebook audio thing won't work on PC and is a mobile exclusive feature
Can't find it on my web either
Guessing they need to "fit in with the hip kids", otherwise the same feature would be available on the web (like how YT shorts is implemented, but at least that's still accessible )
Worst part is it's iOS exclusive so you cannot use android emulators to bypass it
(Well, android can still tune in but cannot host)
"Do you guys not have phones?" - Facebook instead of Blizzard
Blizzard Jr. incoming
Meanwhile it does show the photo of someone who tagged their facebook in the post in the sidebar XD
This explains why i couldn't find it when i went looking for it earlier
Yep though can see test ones from the 8th - can't view without the app either...
Yes it forces you to use the app, you cannot even use a browser for it
Not even Chrome or Opera on your phone. It's ridiculously funny just how badly they implemented it
dont get me started on yt shorts
the ipad app is abysmal, it doesnt even support them
nor does it support community posts
Nah it';s deliberate, requires using the app and all that entails
At least with YT you can access it in all other platforms
did I miss WAN show?
Existing is better than non-existing, even if functionality is questionable
nope not yet
no just their fb live streaming to gurantee always late (???)
I'd rather have a slow car over walk 100KM
oh, didn't know thhy did a FB live stream
They have them on their events
whats the event?
Give me a second
where is the wan show tonight?
On FB mobile you can see the events like this, planning to do the audio room
Once you try to access it, it forces you to download the app otherwise yo ucannot tune in.
is there one now?
oh, I deleted FB years ago. guess I'll skip it
Funyn thing is look at hte amount of likes
And compare it to the normal 1.5-5K likes the page posts gets
They're hosting for a dozen only lol
i hate how facebook does this
like on marketplace
youve gotta have a fb account just to use it
makes me not even want to bother with it even though there's probably good deals on it
same with the oculus
like why do I need a facebook account to use a vr headset
i suspect it only appears on mobile!?
I just checked all their other socials to work out why WAN was so late, no mention of anything. didn't realise they did anything on FB tbh
Oddly enough, no there is no audio roo mcurrently or any event
The last one was the x64 i SS'd
it was the case previously at least twice recently, not sure if and when they do them now
still over an hour later than usual
Ah ok
is there just not a wan show tonight?
They're always late
its been like 2 1/2 hours
Unless Linus is doing a private podcast on FB that is not announced yet, you just gotta wait till they (might) go live
Speaking of the devil
ooh floatplane ping
Streaming rn
On twitch and floatplane
They're gonna take 10 20 40 minutes soon™️ though since they're gonna do the sponsor spots n such
perhaps not...
👊 stop 👊 starting 👊 after👊 6pm pst👊 👊 👊
Also I thought this was a tech show, not a movie trailer live reaction
annd gone (calling it)
It alraedy is

with ppl just selling the normal pink ones yep
people are buying that?
I guess it's not on the app store anymore
Man
I should've downloaded it back in the day
I remember playing an arcade machine or something with it where it was on a big screen
Bet that's worth a small fortune nowadays
Did they just not broadcast to YouTube tonight?
Nevermind. Today's Thursday. I'm a certified idiot.
Working from home can really mess with your perception of day of the week I thought wednesday was tuesday
late again
I agree, Roca. Working from home and just being up late in general has messed with my perception of time itself. Since I don't have to travel, I can stay up late and play games. Then it's morning and I haven't slept. Lol
Labor day really messed with me. I had my time perception back til that gave me a day off and then I thought Friday was Thursday. It gets bad sometimes. Lol
Now taking bets on how late they will be. Winner gets bragging rights for a week.
starts in 30 min is my guess
20 minutes?
10 minutes?
5 minute?
gets more hopeful
Running real late today
Realized the time and figure I might of missed the start but nope still nothing
Imma go with 10pm eastern
maybe even 11pm EDT lol
Clearly this is a consequence of all those late night Linus game streams
o Twitch Title update, so Soon
oo yup
probs clickbait about how the ipad mini is basically a iphone but only costs abt half as much
They have said that in at least 2 videos this week XD
Does it look as ridiculous to hold an iPad mini up to your face rather than a large iPhone? Lol
Just pair it with wireless and you won't have to
It's on now.
yep
Do we count it before or after they go live on YT? Bc it's on twitch now
I belive meowwww guessed without going over. @somber quiver now has bragging rights. Lol
Oh you're right
Didn't see that message.
Like I said before, I'm a certified idiot. XD
hmm looking at my time stamps seems like hockey went over by maybe 1 min , started 7 mins ago so that would of be 35 and i see hokey guess of 30 mins at 06 XD
I hope Linus talks about LGs rival “The Wall” TV
Again, do we count twitch or live in YT as officially live?
I count twitch but only cause I only care about YT if I'm watching late XD
I got it right you nerds. hehe
The only time I'll sign for Floatplane is when OnlyPlanes is a thing

Sounds like your getting your wish
Why aren't they on yt?
LG Wall > Samsung Wall
They are on Yt now
That Colton call made me remember the public roast of LS
Will need to watch that again after the show lol
https://onyxboox.com/boox_nova3color
Part of the reason so many people attack ereader tech imo is they haven't seen how far it has come and that many people such as myself have medical reasons not to use oled or led/lcd at night such as sleep disorders or eye strain. I think for people such as myself, we're more than willing to pay a premium for ereaders because the alternative is impacts on our health long term which is far more impactful than the price premium;
BTW not promoting this specific color eink reader. all of them atm are still new and have different things that they excel at. in my case i chose this one so i could use android apps on it because i read most of my manga on the shounen jump app and i primarily read manga on it;
definitely would love to see a review of all the major options for readers and see a video helping people decide what device is well suited for each of their use cases;
all OLED life, burn in to scary for my normal use, maybe in another 5 years
What I don't get is Linus knows about burn in, so why would he use it in a way that causes it?
1.7Mil tv
I'l take like 10 of those LG signature R TVs that just rolls up into a box
I've had to install 98" tvs and I can't imagine installing one of those beefy lads
go figure power hungry and very hefty
Pros: TV can be used as a realistic heater.
Cons: 1.7M fireplace
another Con, need to rewire your house
dewire*
*Rewall
You're not allowed any electric besides the wall
Imagine the costs of milling and drilling into the wall without affecting supports just to make the TV flush with the wall like they did in the office
Its oled so you run it at less when you want everything else. movie night, turn everything off in the house. Maybe hook up your fridge to that one $1k Jackery thing they have done videos with XD
That sounds like a video based on"Sub-Zero Home Theater Cinema TV Cooling"
Because a 4kW tv dieing may make a mess?
Make a 1.8million house - it's a wall with a sofa and roof, with its own substation for the TV
Am I the only one who realized that the LG is a "budget" option of having a seamless floor on top of industrial glass floor so you can change the color, lightning and theme to your mood?
Hey look at that talking about making a 1 room theater BNB XD
Some malls in here use that for audible reaction to footsteps on entrances and some floors but all of them are seamed, having such a floor is a huge feat.
Wonder if one could submit a graphic or design that they created and can get royalty from LTTstore sales
We have in house designers
Fair enough, will keep them to myself for the near future
Pc froze right here
Not surprised since I'm running windows 11, first crash within like a few weeks tho
that's because Windows 11 is 🔥
Wait people actually are using 11 and they aren't microsoft employees?;
some people like to live dangerously
and honestly, if it's not your daily driver, like are you really going to know it?
I wouldn't put it on my work computer, but would I setup a 2nd computer and use that as mucha s I can... oh yah
How much too late was this week's wan
every body hurts some timmmme
114 minutes ago which is 1 hour 54 minutes, currently it's 3:39 AM for me at GMT so you do your math for CST and such.
It'd be 2:33 AM GMT, not sure how Canada/US timezone works so
Nvm did the math, in Surrey it'd be 6:33 PM so around 2 hours and 3 minutes late if following the 16:30 PT.
Yeah I'm running the insider beta channel, seems to be very stable
Wan show is private now? What did he leak this time? Lol
Linus accidentally started game streaming on the main channel then only realized after 2 minutes
I see they doing Diablo tonight
show ideas, the state of RGB (the different standards , how to tell them apart, what works with each others, extra)
that’d actually be cool
If it was like an open sourced limited edition
Where a bunch of fans send in their designs and the community votes on the best ones
And a portion of the money earned from that release goes to whoever wins
Yes but they probably arent allowed to use a dickbutt drawing for copyright?
How long do the wan-show after-show's typically last?
@merry karma
@opal wagon
@edgy solstice
theres usually not an aftershow, when the show ends the twitch stream ends too. Pre-show is more often a thing that can range anywhere from a few minutes to 30 minutes depending on if they get chatting about stuff.
do they even edit them, or is it just the same as what's posted on youtube?
like if there no editing, the video on youtube should be a good indicator
I think the youtube videos are usually the youtube stream recording, and floatplane videos are usually the most complete version of the wan show iirc
but usually, it's all the same
Yeah, Twitch they turned off vods due to beat saber. And youtube starts when they actually start the show.
They can easily specify that no copyrighted work is allowed and add some limitations. I've worked with companies who had multiple in house designers but I guess it's not something LMG really needs currently (considering how regularly they're pushing 1 new item a week nowadays)
it's easy to say that, harder to prove.
Not really, you can easily ask for WIPs and make sure to have inspiration/source of the ideas too
I know Linus said the model of his new headphones in the latest WAN Show, but I can't seem to find out where he said it. Anyone know the time stamp/model?
Never mind, I found the spot. If you are looking for the same thing, they are HD8XX's by Sennhieser
don't forget the amp to go with it XD
Isn’t the floatplane version of the wan show the unedited one? Why does it take longer to show up there than the YouTube one? I am kinda confused
What mysticman89 said
They may do individual ones atterwards, timing has been more screwy since COVID and particularly in the past few weeks and probably depends on their personal schedules
Remember PUBG until 7am european time, but that was mainly Luke
T W I T C H T O S
lol, 'Kindle is 250$, i'd happily spend another 250$ and get an iPad' where tf is Linus where you can get a 500$ iPad? maybe used? from some crazy person that dropped it down a flight of stairs?
i'm corrected, you can get a Wifi+64 gb ipad mini for 499$, but a 64 gb iPad is going to be a bad time
Watching this Ultimate PC Repair challenge. The twitch chat really needs to be subscriber only. It scrolls so fast it's completely pointless.
isn't it like that for live chat all the time?
too fast to read? im sure. once a channel gets large enough, it's best to switch it to sub only, otherwise it's just a fast scroll of nonsense.
Yeah pretty much anything large you need to at least enable slow chat
floatplane M8
Considering how fast the chat goes during superchats, I doubt having members/subs only would slow it down at all. If anything, people would sub just for the attempt to troll Linus (like they did on WAN show @ LTX)
Is WAN streaming tonight?
Or did I get the night mixed up again? I swear Friday's but usually listening while at work on weekends
theyre usually this late
I hate being an on time person trying to watch this live. I always get side tracked and end up watch during the week
I wonder what was up with tonight's abrupt ending. That was out of nowhere
Same. I would like to know
On floatplane, the chat is slower, gets more attention, and all the money from the subscription goes to LTT. And it is very close in price (assuming you are using a sub token, not prime sub)
Ending was weird. Maybe Linus forgot he had to do something, so maybe he got a text from his wife or something reminding him.
He could have told us. I mean wan show is the one thing a week I am exited about. I rely on those things to keep my mental health up.
I assume he had plans in normal life. Hence the eating during wan show and sudden end.
Linus gets money without trying
just watched the wan show. Loser should get a clippy or BonziBuddy tatoo.
... guns are what's gonna save us from the apocalypse? Sure
the wan wan show
Hey all!
I'm still interested in making this happen
Hey tatsu, the best place to put video ideas is in the forum here: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1322697-thread-for-linus-tech-tips-video-suggestions/
Writers check fairly regularly so they may see it and reach out if interested. If you want Linus himself to see it, it's pretty much a random chance he may respond on Twitter or during WAN lol
*though don't spam either or I'm sure he won't want to check it out lol
Hit us with your best Linus Tech Tips video suggestions! This is to replace our old What should we review next thread. Linus or one of the writers will read these suggestions, but they may not reply to you in this thread directly. Linus Tech Tips https://www.youtube.com/LinusTechTips
would love to see this mentioned on wan show today
Hey all... I'm browsing my floatplane and realize that Live tab is no longer available... is it new? so, are we no longer able to watch wanshow live on Floatplane?
oh, it only shown when there's actually livestream this time. noted. thanks
MX Linux is my favorite Linux distro rn
Yeah just joined his floatplane today and noticed that
Good for you mate I really like gentoo its just not good with my current hardware
MX Linux is Debian-based
@plush cradle I know
k
The thing about gentoo is you choose if you want it to be stable or not if your using the stable version of gentoo its just about as stable as debian but if your on testing its like arch
gentoo isnt for beginners
arch isn't stable?
When did I say that
my example was you could have it like debian where its stable and have it like arch where its not
oh sorry must have misread what you said, i thought that's what you implied
Also arch is not "debian stable" but its just alright if you do good with it
the one thing i liked about gentoo, at least back when i used it, was the documentation
@round bramble Yeah tbh its better then arch its more straight forward and user friendly
i genuinely can't remember why i went from gentoo to arch
@round bramble The main reason why most people do that is because its very hard to mantian if the system breaks it would take longer to fix it then just reinstall the entire os
for some reason gentoo SEEMINGLY has this aura of "complicated wall of text + dependency hell" thing
@round bramble Oh fuck dependcy hell
which, i mean, that's basically as true for any OS where you compile packages
It's not gentoo's fault and I understand why they did it that way but it is fucking annoying to deal with depencies in gentoo
is it any worse than other OS's where you can compile things?
arch, BSD...
though maybe the thing with gentoo is you CAN'T go binary if you wanted? i can't remember anymore, is gentoo source ONLY basically? (without counting custom ebuild servers or whatever)
AUR is why for me
im lazy
AUR easier
The thing is the reason why the package manager is so good on gentoo is not simply just because you compile shit from source that is way to high-level of a explination its how it manages those packages hense the name package manger the flags on gentoo makes it so much more convient then going into the files of software and shit its just a more desktop orianted source based distro compared to other stuff its meant to be simple to use but not let that simplicity hurt the freedom of the user gentoo is not trying to be hard or anything it just has to because thats the kind of distro it is a distro for enthusisasts and I hate when it is compared to arch arch is not good because its more flexible then other systems its good cause its easier to configure
and people intrepet that as a personal attack agianst people who use arch its not its litterly the arch philocphy just being easy to customize but also being easy to use
aww man i love the flags on gentoo its awesome.
and yeah thats the reason its good not just because it compiles stuff from the source code
oh yea, ofc
that's what i mean, i feel like gentoo has this reputation of being this crazy hard distro
which is odd to me
anyway now i'm on
and loving it
oh yeah I love freebsd also used it for a while
also, where straw poll?
that was during the wan show bud
What Distro of Linux are Linus and Luke going to use?
we dont know yet
But probably Pop OS or Ubuntu, that seemed like what they were leaning towards
and id have to agree with that choice, those are some of the best distros for new users
ive heard linux mint and maybe manjaro (but that last one could be a touch more advanced) are good options too for newbies, but i havent tried them
really? how do you access said poll? like during the show how would i have seen it?
are they really 'new users'? (genuinely asking i just always assumed otherwise). i mean if they're doing it for the fun and challenge Ubuntu and Pop OS don't really present much of either
it was posted in the chat when they mentioned it
by luke
id say so
Id assume they have basic experience with linux, but ik linus said never before has he daily driven a distro
ooh must have missed it
yea i did catch when he said that, still very surprising to think of Linus and Luke as linux newbies
I've been daily driving Zorin OS for a while and it feels great. Haven't really tried gaming on it tho. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30BKvLCEdkQ
Zorin OS is the alternative to Windows and macOS designed to make your computer faster, more powerful, secure, and privacy-focused.
https://zorinos.com
how is pop os vis a vis poeterring crap type stuff
don't they make you pay for os upgrades/features?
features which are present for free on other distros mind you
there is a paid tier but I have never even thought to see what it offers because I'm satisfied with the free tier
they...what? on a linux distro? that's new
though you're right, I should see what that paid version offers
unless its like red hat where it's pretty much just support stuff (iirc)
hm yeah the features that are paid are not ones I happen to need. Though yeah I would use Pop OS if I start feeling dissatisfied with Zorin
well actually I lied, I'll probably just go back to Ubuntu
Hm actually I don't like snap so much so probably will use Pop
you just get some wallpapers and additional layouts
what exactly is "professional grade creative suite of apps"?
idk but whatever it is its pretty stupid, considering youve got stuff like gimp and kdenlive which are probably on the same level but for free
lmao
yeah, not apps I would need anyways
the screenshots actually show that they are using gimp and kdenlive
yeah maybe they just save you a step of installing?
so youre paying for stuff that was already free
maybe, i suppose theyd probably be rolled into the ISO
you're paying for isntllation support IMO that's what it always ends up being. which is pretty huge IMO
also, wait people DON'T pronounce QEMU as "Kh (as in lochness)-emu"?
whatever it is its pretty stupid
speaking of which... BAHAHA http://hannahmontana.sourceforge.net/ is a real thing somehow (Hannah Montana Linux). i'm rewatching the bits of wan show i didn't catch and someone mentioned it on chat ithought it was a joke
ye it does exist
https://www.ponyos.org/ there's also this
PonyOS: A Hobby Operating System for Everypony
oh yea! nice
I was really hurt and sad to hear Linus outright dismiss Fedora Linux for gaming
as one of the developers of Fedora Linux that focuses on the desktop and gaming, I was really surprised to see him say that he wouldn't even consider Fedora Linux
some of the main folks that even do game development and porting of games to Linux use Fedora Linux (Ethan Lee [flibitijibibo], Ryan Gordon [icculus], etc.)
In the past few years, myself and other developers of Fedora Linux have been working on improving the desktop on multiple dimensions: responsiveness, power/thermal management, graphics performance, audio performance, and ease of use.
meh, okay no mentioning people
Ah well, apparently there's a link limit and mention restriction here, so I'll just say instead that we did a lot in Fedora Linux 33 and Fedora Linux 34 to improve the quality of the desktop and Fedora Linux 35 (releasing at the end of the month, beta out now) has a bit more coming too. I'm sure Anthony has been following the stuff going on in Fedora and can point to the Fedora Changes centered around desktop and gaming done recently, since it comes up in the Linux news quite a lot.
well, I've said my piece... 😦
ive been gaming on debian with xfce for over 10 years
just watched the last wan show. mase me wanna put in some personal experience
just recently reinstalled my os. this time i ent with ubuntu with gnome. setting up graphics drivers for nvidia was super simple. steam installs and runs good. even steam vr works. with lutris i can play many non steam games.
was hoping they added a ltt linux channel 😆
I wonder if he got Fedora mixed up with something more meme-tastic like Gentoo
I sure hope he realizes his mistake lol
Especially since he mentioned Gentoo. That would be an interesting first video though
i assumme it's so lmg staff don't get constant notifications on their phone cuz ppl would 100% @ them just for lols
i'm still getting over the shock of "linus is a linux newbie"
Where is the poll for what distro linus
How do I set that up on my android phone
You can just add that after the url's slash
Although I can'tsay much as they could ban people for evading filters so
Want me to DM you the link instead?
Shure as I want my vote to be counted
Sent
Thank you if mods get involved sqy that I asked for the link
I am surprised about what's being done now we the followers chose a distro for linus
It's not terribly surprising. I don't think Linus has seriously worked with Linux since he hired Anthony.
I think his perception comes from the name. Linus and Linux.
Imho they should've done Linus vs Anthony for the Linux challenge for a chance of redemption, then again that would be one-sided just like that challenge.
I probably could link to it as well: https://twitter.com/linusgsebastian/status/1444349712266457088
@K_REY_C @LinusTech @fedora @mattdm @mairin @Det_Conan_Kudo Old perception I guess. By my own admission I hadn't done any research yet.
I'll have a look before I make the call. Thanks for flagging 😊
here's an ordered top 5 list of what I personally would recommend to Linus:
1.
Pop!_OS
2.
Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE)
3.
openSUSE Tumbleweed
4.
Fedora
5.
Linux Mint
hey I need help. I did that and a forum moderator (very wrongfully) removed my post and gave me a warning, could you let him know you sent me there yourself so that he may reinstate my post?
the moderator claims I was advertising?
oh and by the way, about twitter, Sanctuary, did already get his attention : https://twitter.com/linusgsebastian/status/1430779139217362944
@Medic5700 @sanctuarygame1 Hardn't heard of it, TBH. Hope it goes well :D
that's what started me on this epic quest
Hoh, I didn't know we had those emoji here? But Fedora ftw 😄
They're from ubuntu hideout server
yeah, I too was kinda weirded out when I saw Arch and Gentoo there but they left out Fedora
Oh so Pate has Nitro then...
Since the last year and 8 months, yes
Which reminds me, I forgot that I had Ubuntu on my PS3, need to look if it still runs as slowly as I remember with that amazing 256 MB ram
U got one of those coool og ps3s then
at least you have 256 MB of video RAM as well :^)
It did work as a little home theater for a bit so it was at least able to run videos
the SPEs made PS3 actually a quite powerful little machine when programmed properly
What distro do u guys figure linus and luke will end up on? What would u use, if u were in the same position.
He thought Fedora wasn't good until rectified, so Red hat /s
I'd give Pop!_OS an 80 % chance
I personally would (and do) use openSUSE Tumbleweed
Im daily on pop!
Yeah that was weird, the way he reacted to fedora but then is like but debian yup. Isnt there a new consumer Red Hat distro, they closed CentOs and isnt there a new replacement i dunno the name
I'm more excited than ever tbh, Linus goes Linux, Valve makes Linux hardware which seems to not suck this time, and Linux is probably starting to get mainstream
Everything linux!! I am too, i use linux for our workstations its faster and easier to maintain than windows. I use to use mac os but they droped nvidia support
Sucks that LMG is stuck in the adobe pipeline. Cause pop os and davinci resolve man on man so great
as far as I'm aware, I have zero Windows 10 installs anywhere
As far as im aware hahaha
hard to keep track with about 30 hard drives :P
but network mounting your home directory so all your files and configs sync across your PCs, absolute bliss
For a video pipeline no more offline media issues!
or well, I'm switching to Nextcloud sync so I get a little better performance but still, not something easily doable on Windows
and then, SSH'ing into your computer is really useful as well
What the heck is nextcloud used for i always see it on my freenas
I guess i could google it, but what do u use it for
it's a bit like Google Drive, but self-hosted
Does it mount on ur pc like a normal nas? Or a web service like google drive
web service
though someone has probably made a KIO thingy for it, I need to take a look
actually no, I don't think I need that
I run it on FreeBSD with Nginx, MySQL and PHP
Thats really useful! I gotta check it out for lighter stuff. I need a classic nas mount for the video stuff tho. That is a lot of places!!!
I use it mostly for backup, though I do have a script which generates my website based on Markdown files in a directory in my Nextcloud account
Thats preety cool!
no noting that silly. watching all linus videos i know him as this very techy guy and i think it's the first time i know someone who was very knowledgeable in computers and technology but had little experience with linux
i bet there are a tone of people that make that connection
yay freebsd!
yeah it's a great server OS
right now i'm using wordpress, bt i do NOT like how heavy it seems...i tried hugo it's gonna be a bit of a learning curve, did you just roll your own script for the website?
yeah, my website is made completely from scratch by me
oh sweet
that is really nice actually
yeah, I made the stylesheet as well and everything is as simple as possible to save bandwidth
so you did all the stylesheet, html everyrthing?
yeah
nice, i thought about that but thought it'd be much too much work
it took a few afternoons to get it perfected
but i love the idae, websites these days are way too complex
lol i'd have to learn css first
yeah, "this website requires JavaScript" is one of the most annoying things about modern web
my workplace has this website that is entirely dynamic
like there are literally NO LINKS
so 'f' in vimperator for example, useless
bruh
I mostly looked at W3Schools for ideas, feel free to steal the stylesheet and the basic layout off my website if you want :)
i basically want to do a very basic 'profile' website so nothing too complex
if it's a single webpage then that's actually really simple
I haven't tried stuff like that myself
honestly i wish i cud just convert latex to html or smthg
like it's all there in latex
my script runs my Markdown documents through a tool called "markdown", then adds the other stuff to build it into the HTML document you see when visiting my website
it also scans for other documents in the same directory, it also has a format so it can link to other websites
ooh nice
cron runs a script which runs the script for all eligible documents every hour
nice
I just finish watch the podcast and noticed that Dune released a statement today A personal message from our CEO
Greetings everyone,
Every backer of the campaign has shown their support and trust in Dune by backing and purchasing the Dune Pro. I am truly grateful for your support, yet at the same time, disappointed that I have not yet delivered to you. I take full responsibility for this and I am deeply sorry to everyone.
As certain expectations have not been met, you may have felt frustrated, anxious and understandably pessimistic about Dune. This is especially saddening as Dune was founded on the promise of giving you the “Power to Choose”. You chose us and so far, we have fallen short on delivering this promise to you.
There could not have been a worse time to embark on this journey. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unforeseen challenges to everyone, both personally and economically. As I look back during this period, there are times I should have done better. From today, we will be implementing immediate corrective steps to regain your confidence in our team. This is part of a comprehensive plan to greatly improve our communication with you by listening more to our backers who brought our project to life.
I am confident, as a result of these actions, Dune will emerge as a company our backers can trust. I have committed myself to provide more frequent and reliable updates on our progress.
You deserve better, a lot better, from our team and from me. Nothing is more important than your trust. Our next Indiegogo update will include information regarding shipping dates. This will be the first step to rebuild your trust and all of us at Dune hope you will give us an opportunity to do so. ```
it kinda has an "apologies for getting caught" feel to it
Closed CentOS? What? That's not what happened. it's the opposite. CentOS, as a project, has become more open. Heck, people are able to contribute to improving RHEL through CentOS now, which is completely new. And people are building stuff on top of CentOS that was not possible before (like the Hyperscale Workstation).
If you want something similar to legacy CentOS where you just want "free RHEL", you could use actual RHEL for free (up to 16 instances) or go with AlmaLinux.
I primarily use Fedora as my daily driver, but as I also contribute to the development of openSUSE, I have a couple of Tumbleweed machines. It's an awesome distribution!
yeah, some games work beautifully on Linux
not a bad choice that
true
what i so first is install all the wine 64\
lutris does half the ....
well instalation...
if ya can use sudo apt update or/and update
can't wait to decide what Linux/Luke pick for Linux versions
I might have to start using one of their choices, my hope is that Luke goes some Arch distro
yeah, a few months ago I decided to give it a spin and after installing codecs, I was absolutely in love, it's rock solid even as a rolling release distro
does the rolling release Fedora still have SELinux? that was what killed it for me
I'm pretty sure it's gonna be Pop!_OS
if they both just pick a Ubuntu variant i'm going to cry
I'm not sure, haven't used Fedora after learning about the likes of SELinux
oh lol
honestly, it's not a bad choice to get started with Linux, remember that Linus is a complete novice
or wait, are you running Tumbleweed now?
yeah
do you dabble in Proton/Lutris/Steam at all? if so, what's the story like on Tumbleweed
Steam + Proton works better than on Ubuntu
sweet
I haven't got around to try Lutris yet, haven't needed to try it
i'm guessing you mainly run AMD graphics?
if not, what's the Nvidia driver sitch like
that's what I'm planning to get next because f*** Nvidia
welp, if AMD could stock cards XD
just sudo zypper addrepo, install the drivers and Bob's your uncle
cool
but you do have to install codecs yourself thanks to the patent owners
but I think that's done by sudo zypper in opi && opi codecs
dealing with that myself
I added a Blu-ray drive a month back, got VLC working, and then it reverted to not reading BLu-rays
that's technically an encryption issue, but that's part of a codec
but once you get the Nvidia drivers and the codecs, for me it's all been smooth sailing after that
btw I like how this chat has basically turned into a Linux discussion
I don't know where else this would go tbh, i'd suggest they add a linux channel, but there's no suggestion channel either
also it's pursuant to the topic of the WAN show
yeah, they really should create a Linux channel
diablo 2 r runs flawless on lutris
had a few crashes installing it at first. but its on my old amd with a gtx970.
I tried running GTA V, on one Proton version (can't remember which) it went absolutely mad
my car would "catch wind" and crush itself and start flying
GTA V used to run perfectly for me up until I switched to the RX 6800 XT. It's still alright, just some odd shadow (I think?) issues.
Arch btw
there was an Nvidia driver update which broke Far Cry 5 so that the ground wouldn't render properly
there were also some other problems lighting wise
and there's a fix to make it run even faster : https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/pyogyp/diablo_2_resurrected_100fps_with_wine_devel_618/
54 votes and 62 comments so far on Reddit
@ionic trout nice ill check it out later
glorious eggroll proton is the only one that properly runs the game well for me, on arch with 5700xt
same for me, that version I think was GE as well
i dual booted debian/ubuntu and windows for over 10 years on dated hardware. steam games played better in ubuntu than windows. years ago i stumbled upon a dev wine for 64bit. took just a minute to install
think having both 32 and 64bit wine installed helped a bunch
anyone get a htc vive cosmos elit working in linux?
aight, Linus seems to have installed Pop!_OS
was reading this article by the new york times that seems to imply that PIA VPN might be compromised / not as secure as it used to be, i was wondering if there were any thoughts on this since they appear to be a regular sponsor. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/06/technology/personaltech/are-vpns-worth-it.html
linus had a discussion not too long ago on the wan show about how to approach him as an employer
"treat me as a human being" or "by the book and expect nothing else back" or some such
anyone have a link to the rant?
nvm found it https://youtu.be/5bTHSwBZVNI?t=995

I don't think that really applies here unless i'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say
it doesn't apply to anything i was just looking for a clip of linus ranting to illustrate my point in a discussion elsewhere
good. this way people get to see him succeed rather than struggle
well....he managed to ""brick"" the installation in minutes (well the desktop wouldn't load, probably a driver issue)

jesus
people were complaining in the comments how he didn't use an Arch based distro, they really wanna ruin this don't they
(it's a YouTube story)
Arch based distro is the best
not for a beginner
Oh no.
arch is going to be a nightmare if there is a manual intervention needed when they do the challenge
arch is a decent, rolling desktop distro but it isn't something you will take a beginner to
it is something you might want to use after being more familiar, after all it is popular for a reason
I guess I don't understand what you mean by 'manual intervention'
do you really think Linus isn't going to blow up Anthony on Teams whenever he has a question?
manual intervention is when, by mistake, there is a problem. Like an upgrade will not go forward unless you edit this config, or pass this option to pacman. They are easy as one liners copy paste most of the time, but you need to keep an eye on them. This mistake happens sometimes as humans aren't perfect and it's rolling release while keeping itself bleeding edge package versions.
not as often as arch. By having slow releases and having different versions, they are able to avoid most of that. Arch isn't a bad distro, in fact I run it on one of my machines, its just not catered towards beginners.
the real question is whether Luke and Linus are going to hash out running Nvidia drivers Pop OS/ Ubuntu or whether they're going to suddenly announce a new AMD (TM) branded video and both be rocking 6900 XTs
pop os has a separate nvidia iso, so should be a non issue. However, an AMD sponsorship would we convenient.
I forget, have they found an excuse to give Luke a free 30 series card?
he's going to be having a fun time if he's rocking a 980 Ti or something
then again i'd have infinite respect if Luka just booted up Ubuntu LTS 180.4.5 and went nope, not palying your game this works and i'm going to run it
I wouldn't recommend Arch for daily driving, especially for Luke as he switched back to Windows due to having to micro-manage his OS
Is wan show 5 or 5:30? The channel description says 5 but I remember from last week I remember 5:30 for some reason.
They can be late up too 3 hours
Wait, is that an in-person WAN show set?!
Last in-person wan show as on December 14 2019
Are they on right now? I didn't get a notif
Yes, on floatplane and twitch
Ah ok
YT streams later when they'r edone from placing the ad spots
That was 664 days ago
If only they can be late as far as 2 days
"This is too HD, you can see every hair that is on my hair" Linus Sebastian 2k21
well at least it might be harder for them to late properly now (except setting up for this lol)
ah that was good
Ye sorry was croppin lol
On-set WAN show rn, live
oh okay
I fucking hate that floatplane hide live button until there's actually some livestream. I didn't get any notification either. smh....
I had to keep refreshing
They're live now after the pre-show
haha can't turn the luke laugh down (much) now
They should do it that they have to go back to Windows 11 xD
?? What is T9 dailing??
Awh what did he say about Github? I just got on to look
If you're trying to call your Dad, you can press 323 to bring up Dad
Oh?
OH IT DOES
It's basically the old phone (and home lines) where you can add "contacts" aka favorites
It used to be the rage in phones 2002-2010 until the touch screen overcame the market.
It literally brings up my dad's contact
Especially in HTC phones
Downloading from GitHub as html not 'raw' (i.e. the original format it was uploaded as)
Have done it before myself on Windows lol
Ah..
Actually, not gonna lie, I actually hate how Github doesn't let you download files individually as raw
im like
"Where the heck is the download button???"
tldr is linus downloaded github for script, gets html instead of script, people mock him when he raises the point of having a SAVE AS button.
Yeah response from earlier was "need download button"
I don't think github is really meant as a dropbox-like service, it's to distribute source code and usually you don't download just part of a projects source
It's meant to be more of a open source code depository rather than a cloud based code sharing system
Eh, if you know Github you wouldn't fall under the average PC user, since if you end up there you're basically dedicating your time for development, coding & assigning projects.
Not to mention Linux is anything but an average Joe's PC operating system, I know those who have no clue how to search files or what CMD is.
Also mom is 6-666-6
But wouldnt work as speed dial
Same
Like, no shade on my dad
But ~_~
He needs to take a computer class lol
I remember him coming to me, and asking "How do I know of the internet is connected??"
Now to his defense, the software on the computer is from his company, and it is quite unintuitive, it doesn't use the stock stuff in Windows 10 that he's familar with
_> And sometimes the software just straight up breaks
Or just refuses to connect to his work's vpn service at all (And the instructions for it suck)
Isn't that just that raw button?
It doesn't actually download the file though
And if you don't know how to save it, you'll end up saving it as an HTML
It just shows you the file in raw format
You right click on the Raw button and Save Link As.
Yeah used to be if you clicked on the file (so got a HTML preview)? But think they have reworked the UI
Also if your a newbie that aint obvious
At that point is kinda on whoever made the script for not documenting it well enough.
Like putting a download-jump link in the README.
yeah competent forums do
also the releases tab kind of does that but I didn't realised they moved it? xD
The releases tab is also something you'd link to in the README.
I've seen alot of repos not even include anything in the releases tab though
And like, if you're new to the website it's not exactly very clear on where to download the file
Jesus we talking tech or casting a LoL tournament, who designed the set?
Yoooo I can type my sister's name in the dial page and it shows up
Hi I've heard Linus is already documenting his experience with Pop OS somewhere, may I know where to look for it?
can you believe iphones can't do that
What???
its brutal

also lol yeah can easily theme things to look like windows 7 lol
wHat 😂
But I do agree, the new set where they're looking more at each other than at the camera is a little wonk for a show that is primarily video-streamed and not primarily a podcast like it would be for Carpool Critics or whatever it's called now. Seems like a lot of the inspiration for this set was taken from the experience there, but I think it feels more awkward when they have to turn and look at the camera but their natural position is them looking off into the distance
(Especially since every other WAN Show design ever was them looking directly at the camera naturally, but turning to engage in conversation with each other for asides, then turning back to the camera to continue the show)
are any of you nerds about the production equipment used to make the wan show?
o wow that was a real long stream
tl:dr GitHub needs a download button.
omg yes
that is some prime memetastic picture
yea I think linus talked about it in the video he did about why android is great, or someone did in the comments of that video but I'd been using android for over a decade b4 i learnt that
holy shit the new set looks soooooooo good
whats up with the compression in the background? (I'm watching on youtube if that helps)
I really wish it would come on floatplane faster, I can never watch it there the next day
When Linus was complaining about GitHub
speaking of github
I made a solution 😛
that linus rant was amazing
I just made a solution lol
Never made a browser extension before
Wasn't that hard
i don't think github has to be measured by the same measure of user friendliness as linus wanted it to be, since it's a git repository first and a file sharing file second
but then again i use it for a living so i'm biased
i'll just read the source lmao
yeah go ahead, build it or whatever you need lol
I just resorted to having the svg in a string and setting the innerhtml there because well, fucking hell creating html elements gets lengthy
imma make a PR
go ahead
I kinda threw it together and it is my first extension, I usually do more server-y stuff in my freetime
I used some ES6 stuff but I just went classical JS for that, just in case that causes issues with older chrome or firefox installs
I should add that image to the README
that was what i was doing lmao
yeah i merged it
wew we're doing opensource in linus tech tips
Well it solves his issue, an issue I never noticed I had lol
my go to was click raw and then cmd+s
Sorry, there is a problem
This topic is only visible for its author
oh
yeah they moved it
they dont know where to put it lol
I but it in linux
put*
but they pushed it to tests
:(
i'll do you one better, i'm not a dev
I don't mean to spam but I don't want this getting lost
so far, to me, I'm getting exactly what I wanted out of Jake's and Linus' journey. They have the right kind of open mindset if a little bit under the yoke of the sensationalism there's been around the linux crowd, but that'll sort itself out soon.
They're doing the right thing by hardlining going it alone and without anyone acting as their crutch. this will send a much more positive message as an end-result.
The bleeding edge hardware is going to cause them a tad more issues then your typical user but it's only ever a matter of how hard you google. they'll also figure that out quick.
we all did 😉
Same
Yep!
I remember when I first switched to Linux on my main machine
I used Ubuntu, since I actually used it before (had it on a Mac computer because MacOS on it started acting up), gave it a spin for about 2-3 months
Then I discovered KDE Plasma, so I switched to Kubuntu, then KDE Neon
Then I started finding myself not liking how Debian user packages worked, so I started searching for something that wasn't Debian based
Found ArchLinux (Fedora sounds interesting but at the time I didn't consider it), saw vanilla ArchLinux was scary so I started looking for something that was based on it xD That's when I found Manjaro, so I gave that a spin and actually really liked the AUR repo
Stayed on there for the longest, then switched to EndeavourOS for a bit then back to Manjaro (also started DE hopping during the time of using Manjaro, tried basically every DE except the tiling window managers and qutefish, found myself staying with KDE Plasma)
And very recently, just switched back to EndeavourOS for a particular package that I didn't feel like compiling was available on the main ArchLinux repos (which Manjaro didn't have added). Also trying out XFCE because Im having this strange screen tearing and constant browser/system lock ups and crashes on my desktop
I definitely have taken the approach with git before of going "I need this 1 short script file" and just copy the contents of the file and paste it into a file to save as a script.
Cause its faster then me figuring out how the hell else I'm supposed to get 1 file from a repository
specially when you help make it
yeah, have another discord I'm in where guy is a secuirty person and while showing an old woman how to do something, a phishing thing messaged her on facebook. so just went okay so this is why that is bad
So far, XFCE actually works nicely than the last time I tried it
Though I can't get scaling to work properly on my laptop 😦
And my desktop still has the crashing issue, but it seems to be isolated on the browser and not the system
guys has linus and Luke ever done the Linux challenge b4?
No as far as I know
this is the first time
Linus hasn't daily driven Linux before this
Luke seems decenly knowledgeable about linux otoh
yes, because Luke has
I’m not sure if this point has been made earlier but I think that the problem with GitHub is not that it doesn’t have a download button but that GitHub is not the place to distribute stuff for end users. It is a git repository hosting service, it is designed to be used with git first and all the web based stuff is secondary (my opinion).
Though I do agree that it would be much simpler if they just add a download button. Atleast for Gists.
Watching the recent WAN show now. Regarding why people buy non-rechargeable batteries I think marketing is a big part of it. I bought myself a battery charger and rechargeable batteries long ago. Just yesterday I bought a robot toy for my nephew requiring two AA-batteries. The toy store only sold non-rechargeable to go with it.
There is also a small price and capacity difference, but being able to recharge is convenient imo. We also have good battery recycling systems (every store selling batteries has to accept old batteries for free).
I wrote an extension that adds a download button
@keen bloom
I agree, though they already have the Releases section (which should probably be made a bit easier to notice), but adding a download button to the file view certainly wouldn't hurt
yes, GitHub used to be basically an implementation of Git, but nowadays it's the homepage of many open-source projects, I feel like they should recognise the change and embrace it, making things more welcoming to the end users (just these small things, like a download button, maybe put Releases between the file tree and Readme instead of to the side)
I agree but I still think that things like having to download scripts from GitHub makes Linux less end user friendly, Windows on the other hand does not even ship with a compiler by default
Thanks! Wasnt easy and its not fully finished yet.
just yes
So I'm watching the WAN show and I don't think all of Linus's complaints are entirely fair. First of all, Linus' setup is not standard and quite technical and complicated. I completely agree that Linux should be more user-friendly for non-technical "normal users" like he said so himself, but the problems he's experiencing aren't really what 99% of other people would face.
Also, Github != Linux. Just to make it clear. But I agree that downloading things from Github could be made easier. As a developer myself, I always forget where I find "releases" so I always just end up searching for it on google.
Another criticism he spends a fair bit of time on is file extensions. I'm not exactly sure what he is downloading and how, but I'll take his word that github fcks up and he downloads an HTML file, with the file extension of .sh.
Windows would just look at the file extension, and just open it with GNU Bash which would immediately crash. Linux on the other hand would detect that it's HTML using it's MIME type and open it in your browser where it at least works. The problem here is that he is so used to file extensions that he can't wrap his head around the OS just checking the contents instead of only relying on the name.
Some of these issues aren't Linux being worse than Windows, but rather Linux being different.
Lastly, you should always know what scripts you run. The car-comparison is stupid. Does he just install all .exe applicaitons that claim to do X and Y without doing some research on what it is that he's downloading?
Did you end up finding this. I can't find it either!?
He said in the WAN show "on the LTT Channel" but I can't find what that is.
He just means on YouTube. That's what the videos will be, they aren't out yet.
OK, thanks @jovial bison, he made it sound like he had released some info already. Must have misunderstood.
Not as far as I know.
There are shorts (or stories) on LTT YT channel. Only 3 I think.
The fact that his setup is weird is important. Everyone's setup is slightly different and while it might works out of a box "new comers" must be prepared that some gimmicks will not work on Linux or will require a bit of tinkering (same story other way, there are things that runs on Linux flawless but needs extra work on windows).
GitHub != Linux is true but how many Windows users needs to download something from GitHub to setup their PC's? And how many Linux users will need GitHub?
And basically same question for running some random scripts from the web. When setting up windows most people just need whatever apps and drivers came with system and couple more from well established developers or hardware manufacturers. With Linux you need to get help from community (which is great) and question is do you trust that community? Do you trust that .sh file that you're starting as root will do exactly what it says?
I made my move to Linux multiple times (mostly Ubuntu and other distros based on Ubuntu, but tried Fedora, Mandrake - yes I'm old, arch and many others) and it never stayed as my main OS for longer then a month. Mainly because of lack of compatibility with games (Linux don't have anything that more that I need and windows wouldn't have, so whenever I wanted to play games I ran windows and switching OS just to do other things was stupid). If SteamDeck will help with convincing developers to prepare their games for Linux it's going to be a great time. I can't wait how it's going to play out.
Although I'm really enjoying the Linux content, I guess I don't really understand the premise. It seems by "normal" user, we're talking about someone who just wants to play games and do some general productivity stuff (and isn't particularly technical). These kinds of users should probably just stick to Windows. Linux shines at developer / sysadmin type workflows where users are comfortable with the command line. That's been my experience anyway. I love Linux, but I use it when I'm coding, or messing around with servers. I don't rely on it for gaming 🙂

missconception

out of date information
I love Linux, but I use it when I'm coding, or messing around with servers. I don't rely on it for gaming 🙂
linux is already good for gaming.
And is full of untapped potential that's lying there waiting to be tapped into in order to make it impossible for windows gaming to catch up
it's going to take some time
it might even happen incredibly slowly
but it is unstoppable now
once wayland is finally production-ready we'll gain access to the overhead that's waiting to be exploited by vulkan
add to that a native port and you've got a linux version of the experience for said game that's better than the windows one
is full of untapped potential
Agreed
it's going to take some time
it might even happen incredibly slowly
Right, but we're not there right now. Linux might be a great platform for gaming, but not for your average user. Not yet, anyway. I'm excited about the future, though.
Ubuntu is very usable by default for most things if you just want something that works out of the box and are willing to accept that it is not Windows. Though as soon as you go off the beaten path, the rough edges appear.
Linux is great for gaming, it just isn't as mainstream as Windows or even Macos (although in recent times Linux > Mac for gaming as macOS Catalina killed all games that were 32bit, which seems to be most), but Proton is solid as fuck, and my only issues I've had was the proprietary NVidia Driver being dog shit at times, and anticheat and DRM, all of which are fixable and are not Linux's fault, at all. Most of the time I get much better performance in my games, despite me running my Linux install on a 5400RPM Sata 3 drive, load times are definitely worse but that's the drive, but once all is up and runnng, much better, everything
I have yet to try the open source driver, so don't ask me how that runs
Even with Proton
It's surprising how much Windows, at least for me, kills performance
Not all distros come with a compiler by default, most I have to explicitly install a build-essentials package or similar.
I’ve had to use scripts on Windows more, surprisingly
Usually relating to unethical removing of activate windows watermark but then i got a license key for $4
so Linus mentioned on WAN Show that Louis Rossmann wanted a message spread about wanting to meet an EU regulator who was meeting Tim Cook (Apple CEO) in New York
Louis wasn't rejected by the EU's competition chief for a meeting about Right to Repair
side note: wow Louis posts a lot of videos, and wow Louis was so excited in the original video (title: make this happen!) where he was trying to spread the ask for a meeting with her
I was just re-listening to the WAN Show and I think the problem Linus was having with the .sh file not working as-expected is a permissions problem.
there's a way to do it on the commandline, but I always just (in whatever gui file manager) right-click the file and click properties, then look for permissions or a checkbox that says something about execute/executable; check the checkbox to make it executable
Then the thing will execute when you try to open it, as-expected
one thing that occassionally annoys me about Linux is that sometimes it seems to take file permissions a little too seriously, and I've had relatively minor issues with file permissions that I don't remember ever having on win7
I don't remember ever noticing that file permissions were a thing when I was using win7 (which imo is the way it should be) unless I was trying to access stuff I wasn't supposed to have access to (teachers' stuff and other students' stuff on school computers, mostly)
Otherwise, I never had a problem using or accessing or modifying a file that I personally (as a person, not just the computer's user concept of whether I was the same user) made
chmod +x filename fixes that. Or in the case of a one time run, you can just type "sh filename.sh"
I think what happened was Linus ran into execute permission problems and didn't know he needed to make it executable, which why should he have to
I downloaded it, I should be able to execute it
I always thought that sometimes linux was a tad too "secure" for its own good, impacting usability
You can still run files by explicitly calling for them to run by prefacing with bash, sh, python ect
I seem to remember a meme about unix, you give somebody a document and the person receiving the document is like I don't have permission to read this
Linux needs to be secure though. It runs a good portion of the internet.
I could totally see this being a small mark against it for everyday use by at least normies, if not the vast majority of situations that don't require the most security
and I use Linux myself
I quit Windows in 2017
I don't use linux at home, but i've been working in the datacenter environment since 2012, and we're exclusively linux at both companies i worked for. So i'm just used to it at this point.
Why should normal people have to know that execute permissions are a thing that they have to set
It should just work, but it doesn't, from the pov of the vast majority of people
especially if you downloaded it, why shouldn't you be able to execute it
and I get that there's a usecase where this behavior makes sense, but not on desktop Linux
For normal people, i'd argue that viruses and malware would spread less easily if people couldn't just run what they downloaded
more likely they'd just sudo everything or run as root if they can
Linux is not Windows. macOS also doesn’t let you run random files without marking them executable.
Linux has conditioned me that every time there's a permissions problem on the commandline I just add sudo in front, or in a file manager if there's a permissions problem (other than executable) I just open folder as root/open in root instance of file manager
at some point, more security (without the regular users understanding or agreeing with it) just encourages more getting around the security by any means necessary, which is at least as bad security as if people could use the stuff how they expected in the first place
mac is loosely Unix-based as well, and is actually recognized as a UNIX (and they pay money for it), so I'd expect such things, although I've never used Apple stuff
I partially agree with you but how is that any worse than the permissions elevation prompt on Windows?
i just click yes
I've never seen this on my personal system when I ran Win7 on my personal system, I've only maybe seen such things on school or library systems
mac os at least forces you to hold down a key to be able to run it, it's harder than just clicking yes. you have to be aware that you're not able to open it. Kind of the same logic as applying sudo, but not quite the same
Its pretty regular actually. Anything that runs an installer asks for elevated permsisions.
I've never seen that on any personal win7 system of mine
windows 7 is not windows 10 or windows 11 even.
yes, I purposely never used a Windows after 7
I don't know Windows after 7
I saw the writing on the wall and in 2017 finally switched to Linux so I didn't have to switch to a later Windows
windows 7 is no longer getting regular security patches, and really shouldn't be used as a daily driver IMO.
yes, I saw the writing on the wall and I wasn't gonna switch to Windows 8 or 10, and I knew 7 was gonna go the way of XP at some point, so I stopped using Windows
XP SP3 and win7 were peak Windows
(imo)
XP for looks, 7 for not being terrible otherwise
windows 10 is pretty solid, i'm worried about windows 11 a bit. stay away from 8 and 8.1
various versions of 10 had some major problems
Microsoft was messing up stuff left and right by the sounds of it
probably because they laid off or fired the whole desktop testing division
Windows 10 is the best of windows 7 and 8 tbh.
I use windows as a desktop at home. Apple for mobile devices. And Linux at work.
I use Linux for my personal computers, and Android for phones.
Nothing else
I don't have any job
Linux has plenty of problems, but I feel like Windows' problems are stuff that's purposely bad, whereas mostly the linux stuff that's bad is bad because they don't get enough outside perspective and testing with actual people and normies and see how they go about using stuff and what they get hung up on
or (some of) the difference is ideological, and I'm more ideologically opposed to Windows
or where Windows' problems aren't purposely bad, it's because they laid off or fired their whole testing team
Maybe you just don't like operating systems or something. Kinda sounds like you hate them all
work pc is windows because IT, everything but my wife's ipad is linux at home. Kids computers on are Manjaro, and I run a mix of manjaro KDE and ubuntu server
I've never found one that was anywhere near perfect
as much as I have huge amounts of nostalgia for Windows XP, I realize and recognize that it had other huge problems
I think win7 was a bit of a step backward in pretty colors and cool funky designs (XP had some cool funky stuff), and I perfer XP's paint program to 7's, but 7 was a huge step up in wifi support and had a lot of practical going for it when XP became untenable
I had been dual or multi-booting win7 with Linux for a number of years when I finally decided to quit Windows in 2017 because it was getting worse and not better and there was an alternative that I found more easily acceptable to me
I just couldn't justify to myself using Windows much longer, and I knew I'd be practically forced off eventually
windows is just spyware now
I think that windows 11 will be a bit of a forced hand because of the TPM requirements, but windows 10 is basically the windows xp / windows 7 of the current times.
forced off because of stuff being less and less compatible as time goes on, like with XP before it
idk how much somebody would have to pay me to use 10, but it's not nothing, and I still wouldn't want to
https://ameliorated.info/index.html You could try this if you're paranoid about it. I personally just uninstall stuff regularly, and limit permissions
IT has it locked out so I cant make any changes to my work computer
but i would rather just run linux at home and live free
I feel like the ideal system is the one where stuff you "delete" goes to trash instead (and you empty at your leasure), and that doesn't have any user or root password but that you have to fix or replace (wipe and reload) if you mess up
its silly to have to go into my "operating system" that I technically paid for as part of a volume licence from the computer MFG and modify it to stop spying on me
linux just avoids the whole issue
Thats true
I delete stuff without really thinking about it way too often
Unfortunately spying on us is the internet now
if I could reliably get MS office to work on linux I would dump it in a heartbeat
sadly I need Visio for work
I've hardly ever had to use an office program except in school
the rest I could make work with other applications or 365 web apps
I don't get why people have to use them tbh
Both windows and mac utilize the trash can method
Not all Linux distros do by default though
Unless using command line on mac, then it's just gone
I have to make system diagrams and worflow drawings most days, plus lots of spreadsheets that are edited and modified by other people on my team as we fill in information
dont use word, or powerpoint or any other office products much
i hate to be making this plug, but quip!!! our team hates using quip, but uses it for everything. it's annoying
^^with reference to collaboration
salesforce is evil
it seems to me that safeguards should only exist when a well-informed user who cares about their own well-being would willingly place them on theirself for their own good, like how you'd (hopefully) use ear plugs or other hearing protection to protect your hearing when there's gonna be loud stuff, or wear sunglasses when it's too bright, or use much better eye protection when welding, or wear fall protection when you're on scaffolding that may not be as stable as it should be, or have guards on some mechanical saw things so that you're less likely to cut your finger(s) off, or the trash mechanism on your computer so you're less likely to delete something without thinking about it enough (or at least you have to kinda consider it twice), or wear gloves if the situation calls for it (not with rotating machinery though, apparently)
I feel like in that spirit, some things should be warned/protected against, but if you insist a couple times it should let you do it
I feel like some stuff isn't warned/protected against enough, and other stuff is too protected against.
A lot of those use cases are put in place because someone who didn't know what they were doing tried to use something in a way they shouldn't.
I was trolling
ah
my old linux gaming rig on superposition
its not very impressive but it still games well
I'm trying to remember which Linux Tech Tips I was just watching. I think it was the wan show, Linus was talking about his experience as a new user on linux and disagreeing about usability, can anyone remember which episode it was?
The latest one
Thanks. I thought it might be but it wasn't showing up on my history.
So, I went and I watched all the ones there.
I don't think that's true. December 14th, 2019 was a Saturday. The last on-set WAN show was March 20, 2020. Luke wasn't on that day. It was Linus and James. The first video-call WAN show was March 27, 2020
Haven't daily driven Linux in a while, but it feels good. The switch from windows wasn't as bad as I expected. All of my steam games work with almost no tweaking(Still have to test to see if the games work well). All in all a smooth transition. Thanks LTT for pushing me to make the switch
Cool to see people following along. A lot of the pain moving over is just familiarity and stuff that you just know in Windows being something you have to look up, but the longer you stick with it the less that is true.
