i don't have 40G/100G gear, i have a 2.5G switch with 10G SFP+. I ain't upgrading to more right now, so i only want my server to be 10G to serve 2-3 2.5G clients
and well, it is going to be 18.5 euros this way
you can get a 40g one for the same price
i've also seen people in the synology subreddit get the mellanox 40gb one to work on some models
pls gib link, might cop aswell
keep in mind, i have a 20 euro coupon, price is 40 euros for the card + cable, which normally would be a standard price ?
yes, but you need a 40g switch for the 40g model, no ?
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/1102276223 i usually look at this ali store in general
well it also works at 10gb lol, but to b e fair, the ports are qsfp
so yeah you'd need a 40gb switch on the other end
i mean they got the 40g version too https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005047972721.html
the specific link i look at is https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005444667793.html which is a card they sell for 28 euros + 12 euros for the cable i think
where did you get 20 euro coupon?
ah those braindead games
well yeah, normally i wouldn't do it, but i did the math and i was like "oh well, if this is what it takes" 😄
i mean if it was 1 or 2 euros, i won't bother. 20-30 euros, probably worth the big of time while sitting in bathroom anyway
understandable
do you know any good deals on lsi cards (in it mode)
not much, i bought one card from same store, and i doubt it counts as a deal
yea allright, i have couple of sas ssd-s that i would like to use thats why i am asking
yeah generally, i actually got my 2 x-3 pros for ~30 EUR each on ebay which was nice
any thoughts on the Zimma cube as a Nas?

this is the one i was looking at
for 1.2k you can make something much better
Not sure how good it is, however for about the same price I put together an Epyc 32 core CPU with 128gigs ram, an MSI mother board with 2x 1gig 1x 10gig networking, and support for 8 hard drives via SAS or sata
Next cloud runs as a snap-in so was easy to set up.
yeah, unless you really want that small form factor, hotswap functionality, it makes no financial sense
and even for hotswap, as long as you don't need the super small form factor, you can go with mATX & hotswap, for a lot of money, but still leaves you enough to run circles around the Zimacube pro https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/product/info/computer-chassis/cs382/
ok then i have $800 to fully build the server including storage any good builds?
silent or rackmout?
What do you mean silent OR rackmount, you can have both 🤣
while you can it is inpractical
and way more expensive
the basic question is what you expect from it, cause for simple NAS you can go as low as some i3 and budget board, but you might want more CPU performance, so maybe i7 (or AMD equivalent)
So I am impractical. Ya, the cases are harder to find a decent one, but you can.
not for 800$ for a server with storage included
i would certainly exclude storage from budget outside of the OS drive, because that can take all of your budget right there
i mean pair of 16TB drives could take $600 like nothing 😄
exactly
True... I was closer to the 1200 he was asking for the desktop unit.
i mean the budget for Zima was $1200 including 16GB RAM/250GB system drive. So why is desktop budget $800 including storage ? 🙂
I built my first nas with a 5600g, 16gig of memory in a fractal design node 804. Think I was in for about $500 without storage. I used salvaged 1tb HDD so not much in storage cost.
but then we are back to what are expectations of performance
🤔
Isn't that just a jbod?
It is a good price, if it has the sleds and psus. If not, that could cost more than the unit
he has pics in the hdd listing
see this is why i try not to ask things in here. who cares why i said the budget so thats the budget. why are you question that insteadof just helping
that was a secondar question, the first question is still unanswered - use case
thanks for all the help but nvm ill figure it out myslef.
look, it is hard to recommend when we don't know the basis to recommend. NAS is a very broad term:
- do you require hotswap or not ?
- how many hard drives do you plan to have in it ?
- how much performance do you expect from it ? Only basic NAS features, or will you run Docker/video transcoding etc ? These things decide CPU/RAM/IGP/GPU requirements
- what storage do you want straight away in that budget ? As i mentioned, two 16TB drves new could eat $600 of your $800 budget, and for $200 at best you can get some old used HW, so instead of builds we would be looking at which prebuilt fits your requirements.
In short, without knowing what you want we can't answer.
i could tell you to buy a used prebuilt with Skylake CPU; but you might want to have 4-8 hard drives later down the line and that would be a problem
or maybe you want hotswap - which means one has to allocate much more to the case to accomodate that feature.
maybe you want to use something dependant on Quicksync feature - that would rule out any AMD based build
and finally as i said before, the storage itself is usually an insane amount of budget itself. Are you fine with a pair of 4TB refurbs ? Or maybe you want 4x10TB in that budget ? We don't know.
Because storage is the most expensive part of any NAS build, i thought it was a valid question to ask why is budget much less than you were willing to pay for the prebuilt base NAS system without storage.
If you got offended by that question, i am sorry.
what does making a router into an access point do?
Glad I'm crazy lol
Bridges the network you plug it into through.
so does the router still have to be connected to the modem
Hopefully someone here is able to help, but I am having issues connecting a eufy 15c max to my network after I upgraded my router and modem to a Asus rt-be7200 and netgear cm1000 respectively. I have tried turning off the 5ghz band entirely but no luck.
if a monitor i'm looking at says it has an rj-45 ethernet port does it guarantee it supports gigabit speed
let's say i have 2 pcs, one has TrueNAS on it and one acts as a file transfer thingymajig, can i connect both pcs directly with NICs?
It stops being a router and only does wifi
No DHCP or anything
Yes
in addition, one nic is connected to the other pc and the other one is connected to a network for ex.?
Correct, yup no issues
Just don't set a default gateway for the NIC that connects the TrueNAS and other computer
how can i do that
Set a static IP and leave Default Gateway empty
i'm getting issues connecting to the nas when it's connected to my dlink router
now it's directly attached to my isps modem
i seem to miss a setting
the setup is NAS pc is attached to Dlink DIR-882 to isp modem, client pc is attached to a load balance router which then connected to isp modem,
tried port forwarding but no luck
If I'm torrenting an old educational book that's no longer being sold anywhere physically or digitally, using a VPN on a libraries wifi,
1️⃣ can tell I'm downloading something via torrent software?
2️⃣ can they tell that I'm using a VPN?
Ouch! That's literally Raspberry Pi amounts of bandwidth
<@&750150305383186585>
they changed it after that first preview batch, but still not great
still not much better
Double, but now it's trying to push NVMe storage
I can't help but notice it's still advertising the PCIe slot(s!) on their site
Thunderbolt 4
Bet that's all fun to use
that is for the Pro to be fair
that one is a mobile chip
Intel® Core™ i5-1235U Processor (12M Cache, up to 4.40 GHz, with IPU) quick reference with specifications, features, and technologies.
Ah there's multiple skus on their site and they're conflating them?
Yeah here we go
if you go to their website (not the store page) the marketing on "/products/cube-personal-cloud" mentions TB4, PCIe
Bet that's nice if you didn't bother to read the store page
well yes, the specs page explains it too, but on main product page it is problem
Yeah you have to go literally this far down to actually see what's included with the product the page is supposedly for
well, i am not defending them 😄
Nah I wasn't assuming you were
only N100 device i have is a small NUC sized Minisforum device which has 2.5gbe NICs, so it acts as my router
I've seen their products come up a few times (zimaboard) and they've never impressed me
Yeah that's a fine use for that CPU
9 lanes of PCIe 3.0 is ample when 2.5gbe NICs need 1 and an SSD needs 4 (it won't perform at top speed but it's a router so who cares)
i think they only linked x2 ? not like it matters
LnkCap: Port #1, Speed 8GT/s, Width x4, ASPM L1, Exit Latency L1 unlimited
LnkSta: Speed 8GT/s, Width x2 (downgraded)
Yeah but the CPU can offer 9
Isn't that curious - they must have wanted the rest for some other purpose cropped off in your diagram
(but it might be my SSD, let me check)
this was their latest info i think, but their diagram is very minimal
What did I do that's against the rules I legit don't know
My only idea is that these switches tend to be pretty expensive in any reasonable lane count considering the cheapest options on the market were bought out by Broadcom/Avago
That switch chip only allows for 2x upstream links
Well that and I remember something vaguely about programmable high speed serial links being reconfigurable on some chipsets between PCIe and SATA
Ah hello, knew I remembered something!
problem is, they are trying too much with limited lanes. They should have compromised and had let's say just one M.2 NVMe slot, no wifi, no second PCIe slot. That way they could have had the whole bottom right section replaced with just two x1 links to two 2.5G RJ45 ports
There you go. If you use the onboard SATA ports you lose PCIe lanes
In an ideal world where PLX wasn't bought out and the price wasn't 10x'ed you could just give it 4 PCIe lanes with like 16 down and attach all your internal peripherals to that
But it still would have cost more to do that than making an offering with badly thought out IO that looks impressive when you only look at the slots
again, N100 as it is isn't that stupid, but they tried to cram too much features into a device built on something not meant for that
Agreed
like give it 3 lanes for 6xSATA, two lanes for two 2.5gbe NICs, two for a PCIe slot and then either two x1 NVMe slots or one x2 NVMe slot. Skip the wifi, skip the U.2, skip the second PCIe slot
(tho wifi is probably a separate dedicated interface anyway technically)
It's good enough for many embedded tasks at an RRP of $55USD
You get half of it, and need another part to complete it. It has a dedicated interface on the PCH
Unfortunately googling "WiFi MAC" gives me a billion unrelated results and is as pleasant to filter with Google as having my fingernails pulled off
So it can remain an exercise for the reader

CNVi or CNVio ("Connectivity Integration", Intel Integrated Connectivity I/O interface) is a proprietary connectivity interface by Intel for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios ostensibly to lower costs and simplify their wireless modules. In CNVi, the network adapter's large and usually expensive functional blocks (MAC components, memory, processor and...
yes
I use tailscale as my VPN provider. Recently I noticed that a public wifi i go to blocks all tailscale IPs, I can't even go to their website. Could you recommend how I could bypass this?
is it normal for ISPs to release their default "router" firmware's as open source?
cause i just realise it is open source
under some gnu license
Does anyone know a Canadian source for the USW-Pro-Max-16-PoE? Or if not, can someone recommend a good PoE+ injector compatible with 2.5Gbe?
hello, can someone help me with my USB tethering not working? im on win11
The ubiquiti store https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en
It's out of stock everywhere, so good luck lol
That’s why I was asking. It was a Hail Mary
It's a new product, if ubiquiti don't have it, then obviously no one else will either
Yeah. I guess I’ll have to wait :((
used up all the coupons from those games 😄
ASUS network stuff can go cluck it self.
Any recommendations for a new ecosystem? Have a file server and two gaming pc’s on the network. Also need wifi that covers a fairly long house.
Trying to keep it under 3k with one ap and one router, but might be flexible on the price.
The ap’s can not be ceiling mounted and can not have cabled networking
Ubiquiti, easily
You could get a UDM-SE and multiple APs for that price lol
Oh missed the wireless part
Uh, good luck with whatever overpriced garbage you end up finding
Ouf, forgot about currencies being a thing 🤦🏻♂️
300usd, not 3k
Oh you're even more fucked then
Unless you just get a UDR and hope it's built in AP is good enough for your house (it probably is lol)
I have cabled network from the router to the pcs tho, so wireless is just for phones and stuff like that
What country are you in?
Good luck finding it in stock anywhere though
The UX could also be an option
Ouf, that seems to be a problem
Or a UCG-ULTRA + U6-PRO
https://eu.store.ui.com/eu/en/pro/category/all-wifi/products/u6-pro
https://eu.store.ui.com/eu/en/pro/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/ucg-ultra
Don't have to mount the AP, you can just have it by the gateway
Anyone ever use MakeMKV ? I’m losing volume when I convert the discs to MkV files for my plex. Any way to fix this?
By volume I mean the sound is really much lower then normal
anyone know of a good and cheap windows vps host? dont need anything super powerful just need windows and ip addresses
Cheap and windows don't usually go together haha
Hey chat, so I play games like roblox and stuff and I always have issues with my internet and I tend to disconnect from the game a lot. My network provider is spectrum does anyone know how I can improve my internet stability or even make it faster? Thanks!
What do you need windows for in a vps? Do you want it going down due to a update?
Check buyVM
I can also list you more providers if you'd like in dm's
Can someone tell me if this is a good switch? https://amzn.to/4bNe7R1
Its a switch... and its cheap...
question
i have an ethernet cord, getting like 150-160 up, and around 10-15 down, and im getting 800-900 ping while playing things like CS2, and Overwatch, what could be the possible cause of this?
I even went out to buy a new ethernet cable, and the same thing was happenening
Plugged into what? Connected direct to your router which is connected to the ISP? Plugged into a wifi puck?
What type of internet? Coax, DSL, Satellite, fiber?
Ummmm, yah
They must be awkward at parties
does anyone have an idea on how to use 22tb of storage in fortimanager 400g?
(currently using 32gb of it
)
Manager?
Didn't even know they had hardware appliance managers
We just have analyzer and manager as a VM
how much PCIe bandwidth does a connectx-4 2x 25GbE card use at line speed both ways
the specsheet says it has a PCIe 3.0 x8 bus but idk how much is actually used
hmm doing some quick math, full-duplex line speed for both is 4x 25Gbps
or 12.5GB/s
okay so it actually does need a x8
so an AsRock N100DC-ITX as a line speed 25Gbps router won't do
as it has only a x2
all i need is a small, efficient N100-based (or similiar perf/W) board that adds literally nothing and gives me 8 of the 9 lanes of PCIe expansion
Woot!
What motherboards have low power consumption that perform well for a NAS system?
Step 1: Spend $5000 on licenses
In windows settings is it normal for the "IPv4 DNS servers" to say my DNS and then "(Unencrypted)" by it?
I'm using a custom DNS (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1) set on my router and windows say my "DNS" is my routers default gateway so do you think that could be why?
anyone know if a high number of correctable codewords nearly as much as unerrored on a DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM downstream channel is any sort of cause for concern? just upgraded my old DOCSIS 3.0 modem alongside my cable internet speed plan to mid split 2000/250 so im not very familiar with how DOCSIS 3.1 functions
my internet speeds seem normal but i want to ensure reliability for working from home
Ight done, what is next step?
We have them as appliances due to not wanting to rely on server& storage team for a vm
Step 2: Spend $12000 on Fortinet support
Step 3: Give up
Yep already taken care of
Great little money vacuum you've got there
Very much so
Loking at this induces pain
Looks like you'll have to upgrade your license
Chassis from fortimanager and fortianalyzer should be swaped lmao
Best gaming router under $100 please?
Yeah that's fine I just didn't know they sold a chassis model as they felt like perfect VM models lol
they have also made fortihypervisor but after E line no more
that's pretty cool haha
they should stop putting "Fortixxxxx" whatever
and just put "Forti* number_hardware revision" for the name lol
is ASUS RT-AX55 AX1800 good?
it is just a regular gigabit router with wifi6 (non 6ghz)
for gaming purposes you need at least a cisco 8202-SYS /s
will it be fine with ethernet?
dont fall for "gaming routers"
literally same trash as any other router
if you want something good get a router that can be flashed with openwrt or comes with openwrt preinstalled
my current router is pretty bad so do u think itll still be a upgrade becuase id be able to use ethernet now?
the one im using rn is just the one that comes with ur wifi
your router doesent have ethernet ports?
it does but it has to stay downstairs in my house and my mom said if i got my own i could have it in my room and use ethernet
so the jump from wifi to ethernet will still be good
and how will you connect them together?
wdym
do you have a ethernet cable or coax from current router location to where your room is?
no i thought i could just connect the router to my pc, how does it work do i have to conenct the router to my modem?
your wan connection comes through coax, fiber, phone lines or 4g/5g
no wan no internet
yes
and it has to be a wired connection?
sounds like you want a 2 device mesh system
yes or no
depends
fiber/coax/adsl - yes
4g/5g/wisp - no
you arent getting a 5g router for under 100$
a lot of things can be done but should it be done
no
you are literally describing a wireless repeater
no routing will be done in that mode
expect speeds to be not optimal
so for most optimal use the router should be connected to the modem ?
i am just going to say get 2 device mesh system and set it up
ask chatgpt for basic home network arhitectures
8818-SYS 😛
would anyone know why the cable in my walls for ethernet does perfect uploads from my laptop to nas, but the downloads are super shoddy?
anyway to have multiple connections to the same router to bypass a device download limit? https://discord.com/channels/375436620578684930/1264027168430886975
anyone have any experience using one of these for a Plex machine? im goign to get external hhd bays to have set up https://a.co/d/5X89bQX
on amd hardware transcoding may not work but if you dont have plex pass then it doesent matter
i dont have plex pass. ive just been using the free plex. and rippping my movies on a disc reader then running them throught MakeMKV. is plex pass needed
hardware accelerated transcoding is locked behind its paywall
if you arent using it then it doesent matter
OK, then a secondary question would be do I need hardware accelerator transcoding?
This Plex media server will be accessed from multiple states in the United States. Is that something that I need to worry about?
i havent bought plex pass either so cant comment if you need it.
as for remote access you need to check if you are behind cgnat as if you are then it will have to go through plex relay and that slows it down considerably
That’s the IP that’s behind cgnat right?
if isp provides you with static or dynamic ip it is fine, if under cgnat it has to go through their relay
Where do I find that information?
Nvm it days I have DHCPv6 that’s dynamic so I should ok right
So I’m really new to the whole newt working side of things lol.
I’m also wondering if it’s worth upgrading my ISP provided router/modem to somthing better
Hey guys, are there any coax specialist in here. I have issues with my GFs apartment and need help troubleshooting.
wondering if it’s worth upgrading my ISP provided router/modem to somthing better. im currently running the ISP xfinity s-fi gatway router/modem combo. should i look into somthing else? its Coax Wan so there already a speed degrigation lol
if you want more features sure
speed will not be improved with a different router?
most likely no
ok thanks
i upgraded my router purely for extra features new router comes with (multi wan) and actual interface that works, isp provided router had some wierd unintuitive ui that broke half the time
ahh ok. yeha not too worried about it. i get 900 dowload and 30 upload. thast about all ill need i think
also vlan support
hosting a vocoder for a network based radio
trunked radio system. only runs on windows
sadly
That got very topical just now thanks to CrowdStrike
If I had something I needed to run on a server that was only built for Windows I think I'd seriously consider trying to make it work on Wine...
yea that message was really forshadowing lmao
did you try running it with WINE?
i foudnd a neat thing. im sure others have but its till cool haah I DID NOT FACT CHECK THIS BUT IT LOOKS FINE
yea but that is only for nvidia
vaild
The Unifi U7 Pro series APs are beasts. I am floored by how well they are performing. To the point that I think I may have installed more than were needed. By a long shot 😂
I hope I don’t grow another head…
Non-ionising, so it can't mutate you, only cook
And inverse square law and regulations means you probably won't be doing much self-cooking
damn. too bad
Behold! The one-watt microwave that isn't aimed at you!
We need to make a network transmitter and receiver for the UV-C band so people have something to fear
Fear the power!!!!
You think you did? I did my house with U7 pros and my Internet connection is 600mbit cable
Wifi 6 could max that out
The amount of cooking it would do is not even measurable, but it is calculateable
My WiFi is used for many things besides internet (which is 10G commercial black fiber). Most of the bandwidth tho is used internally hosted on local media servers
Hey guy's I was starting to setup a game server (just a pc I had laying around) and started running into the problem that neither my pc (on the same network) or my buddies could find the server.
I started port forwarding on the server firewall and the router aswell, it all didn't do anything and even websites that check if the ports are open tell me they're not open.
Just wanting some insight and help if anybody would know what the problem could be.
Provider is AT&T and the game server is supposed to be a DayZ Server.
Ports are 2302,2305 and 27016.
Thanks for any replies in advance
hii can somone help me sql server
my router is in the middle room of my Half double simgle floor apartment. i want to get Wired connection to the far ends of my house. is there a way to do that without running awire thought the wall. like a accecpoint that then has a wire coming out i can connect to
do you have coax in your walls?
no i thought abotu putting a splitter in and and access point through the outside wall into the other room. if i do that though will that lose some speed by splitting the coaxlike that or can i split it off the plitter inside?
just run cat6a, it isnt difficult
you can do it very minimally
cat6a is better then cat 7?
there is no benafit of cat 7 at home
just get high quality cat6a cable with actual copper inside (dont get CCA cables)
like this one? ive made cables before but not since like 2012 haha
yea but you dont have to buy whole box, there are plenty of stores that sell by the lenght
is the signal loss ecffective ly the same as cat 5 back in the day? around like 800 feet before you start to have signal degridation?
100m is generally max distance regardless of cable type
ok ti thought so just doubled it in my head hhah
i can run one single line forme th routher into a wtitch and out to oth other tings correct?
yes but i would reccomend terminating to a keystone so cable you crimp is fixed and patch cables which are stranded are mobile
man this stuff hasent gnaged a lot haha but just enough to be slightly confusing.
you can do it "old school" if you want
only thing that has changed is removal of punchdowns and introduction of tooless everything
id rather learn the new stuff haha only for 5 years from now it to be old school haha. but that CompTech at its basic. always moving forward
oh yeha im renting this place can run cables throught the wall. guess im going old school haha
small holes can be easily patched aswell if need be
i susppose but id rather just cover it wil cable covers lol
I’m looking for a Wi-Fi router here are some thing it needs
Coax cable input
Wi-Fi 6
2.4G and 5G support
2.5 gig
I’m getting a NAS that has a 2.5 gig port and I’d like to get a router that can take advantage of that speed
Does my ISP send Ethernet over Coax and if so can I get a converter for it?
You will most likely need to use the ISP modem in bridge mode
hey, so basically i'm trying to setup a point to site connection, but i'm lost now, thought i have it figured out
here is roughly how the connection looks like
The router my ISP gave me does have a coax input but I’d like to have my own so I don’t need to get billed for it every month
i already did routes on my side 192.168.20.0/24 via 192.168.21.1 dev home0 proto static metric 50 (.1 is the VPS wireguard address)
and already did route on the VPS side 192.168.20.0/24 via 192.168.21.3 dev wg0 proto static metric 50 (.3 is the home server wireguard address)
Ask your ISP for guidance. It may be necessary to use their modem for encryption/decryption and authentication
There is no encryption or anything like that
It will work with anything you connect it to
I mean from the coax.
Each ISP has different systems in place to get you connected, and thus it is best to contact them for this
The only real reason I need a 2.5 gig router is for my NAS
If there is an adapter that can convert the coax signal to an Ethernet signal I’d like that
Then I could just get a regular 2.5 gig router
You can put the ISP modem in bridge mode, then connect the modem to the new router. If you want to use your own modem you will need to contact your ISP to see how they do it
Not in this case. The ISP modem usually provides encryption/decryption and authentication so that someone can't just tap into your coax and see your internet traffic
I had an old router that wasn’t from my current ISP and it worked fine
Which leads me to believe that there is no encryption or decryption
but it even fails on the first hop
Honestly
ATP
I should just get a switch buy a coax router connect my NAS to a switch and add an access point to the switch that has all the features I want and call it a day
oh nvm got it working looks like my mobile ISP just doesn't give traceroute info :3
Ok I found a router
I want that 2 pcs to connect to the same SQL server
Can you provide more information about the setup? Are the three devices/machines in the same physical location?
whats up yall, last year when we renovated the basement one of the things the electrician did is run ethernet through the walls, how do i use the ports? where can i see they terminate and all that?
R.I.P. CenturyLink C3000Z (April 2, 2019 - July 23, 2024)
In case ur wondering, it began having an issue recently where it would need to be rebooted once every few hours due to only getting like 0.5 mbps download via Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Not a DSL line issue since the modem status page said the speeds on the DSL lines were normal (2 lines since I have VDSL2 bonded).
Bruh CenturyLink is garbage in my area, before we switched to sparklight we only got a whopping 7mbps. Now I got whole home 600mbit through really overkill UniFi setup
the "originally 40 euros but with coupons it was just 11.87 euros Connect-X 3 10G + 1 meter cable" (but they actually sent the 3 meter one) arrived. Now i need to power off my server later today 😄
had to google how to remove an SFP+ RJ45 module tho, i would have never have thought it works like this LOL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux221oWWJuY
Some people broke their module after not knowing how to remove it. Here's how you remove it.
also worked on first try on problem, outside of the need to reconfigure which NICs are in the proxmox LAN bridge
can someone answer that? also idk if this is the right place to ask but its all i got. if anyone knows a better place to ask tell me
also ping me in answers
so im looking at getting a ethernet switch (need more then 5 ports) so i only need to run one single ehternet cable from my router to the living room. thne i can branch off the swtich to the two work stations and my 3d rpinters and Media server. recommendation on good equipent to do this?
if you are buying unmanaged 1g switches just get switch from reputable brand like netgear tplink, dlink
can somone help me
your ISP
my what??
internet service provider. whoever gives you the internet
if this happens when directly connected to the internet router from your provider, then it is a technical issue on their side (or your cables or whatever), and only they can help you
I only get 10 MB/s download speed with this, is that normal? And yes, I understand that MB and Mb are different.
And my download speed is dropping to 0 MB/s occasionally.
mine is the fastest
how can i increase my network speed without getting a new plan or router? I have like around 350mbps download and 25mbps upload
Green line indicates you're still doing a lot of disk operations even if you're not actively downloading. I assume that game is heavily compressed
Ah, thanks for letting me know... I was downloading ark.
You don't need any faster.
Depends on what internet plan you have vs what you're getting. If your ISP is saying you should be getting 1000/35, for example, then you're limited somewhere, most likely the modem
i see some people with like 1gbps download though
well what do you pay for?
Yeah because they're paying for a 1Gbps line
idk, id have to ask
Check your internet plan and see what you have.
i was just wondwering if there was a way, if not its whatever really
Unless your ISP messed their configuration up, there's no way you're getting around the speed caps
Find out exactly what Internet package you pay for, and tell us if you connect directly to the modem / router using a wired network cable or WiFi, then we'll know if you even need to troubleshoot.
These are hubs not switches right? Can I swap them for 2.5gbe unmanaged switches?
I just got multi gig cable internet and a router capable of 10gbps LAN and all my cables in wall + my distribution boards are cat6/6e, but my link speeds are only gigabit
I’m trying to identify the bottleneck so I can get 2.5gbps to my PC so I can take advantage of my full 2gbps internet speed, and these boxes seem like the most likely culprit
As it stands my phone on WiFi 7 MLO/6GHz literally gets a faster download speed than my pc wired into ethernet 😭
1000/35
It will say somewhere on it, but I'm going to guess they're switches, because that's not usually where you'd find a hub
Won't be a hub with a cat6 panel
Too many unknowns on the cabling to promise you'll get 2.5gbe everywhere but it's possible
Definitely the smallest switches I’ve ever seen though haha
And 2 are daisy chained together
man, these RJ45 10Gbe X540-T2's are really going for cheap, too bad RJ45 10Gbe switches are expensive and RJ45 SFP+ modules are like 30-40 euros still. And X540-T2 needs airflow to not cook itself 😄 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006268866821.html
heh, in the related items it is even cheaper
you can find used nexus switches that are like 48 port 10gbe
but uh...
then you have to use a nexus switch that is loud and gigantic
and i'm pretty sure it sucks down 300+ watts just at idle
meh, i got a ConnectX-3 for my server instead with a cable for super cheap thanks to coupons, so i am fine
they're like 500 bucks generally
rest of network is fine with 2.5Gbe for clients, i wanted 10Gbe really only for the server
i think the one i found is uh
48 port 10gb ethernet, 4 25gb sfp28?
and 2 100gbit qsfp28?
it might be 2 40gbit qsfp+ though
anyways, it's nice to use this instead of 10gbe sfp+ modules because those things get REALLY hot
and they're still expensive
#networking message is what i use now after yesterday
yeah, 10gbps sfp+ optical dac cable is the way to go
and on switch side it is just one of those cheap 8x2.5 RJ45 +1x10 SFP+ china switches
yeah all you need if you're just looking for connectivity
hell you can get away with even having like multiple vlans and switch networks as long as your upstream switch is managed and can tag vlans
Most likely you are looking at fabric expander...
negative
just older nexus switches
3k series and whatnot
the working ones are 5-700
and the parts only ones are 50-150 bucks
Cisco Nexus N3K-C3064PQ-10GX is not a fabric extender/expander
and they're pretty common on here
Is it possible to connect multiple network drives with different credentials in windows over smb to my trueNAS??
Because it worked 1 year ago
Now I have a new System and now it doesn't
2k are fabric extenders
why are upload speeds so much slower than download speeds?
you mean in general ? Because most people download, so those speeds are prioritized. Also the fees between networks are often based on uploads only, so they try to limit you that way as well.
o okay sry
Depends on the medium, coax and DSL tend to be from an era where most consumers (and is still true today) just needed to download most of their data. Today though with more people streaming and doing other tasks which require more upload though that's slowly changing.
Coax and DSL tended to allocate much of the frequency to download and leave lower frequency stuff for uploads which was more constrained in terms of how much bandwidth you could get
Fiber allows for symmetrical although some ISPs might not provision you for that it allows for higher bandwidth at much further distances and as that slowly rolls out to more places DOCSIS (coax) and the like are slowly changing standards to move to allow more uploads along with faster downloads. I think DOCSIS 4.0 is aiming towards allowing up to 6 gigabit uploads and 10 gigabit download but still it's going to be a while before DOCSIS hits symmetrical upload/download offerings at higher speeds but it's getting there.
Thank you, I was just wondering
how do I setup my isp internet login thingy in openwrt
NVM I DID IT LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
I saw some people were talking about the cheap Chinese switches with 4x2.5gb ports, and in my case 1x10Gb SFP+ and 1x10Gb RJ45
I think my switch died after only a few weeks, but I want to make sure it’s the switch since we JUST had some fiber put in and it was working fine, so I doubt it was that but here’s why I really think it’s the switch:
I was using the 10Gb RJ45 port for my PC, SFP+ back to my rack downstairs, and the various 2.5Gb ports to other stuff upstairs. When I patched in the old Cat6 my laptop had internet, but my PC still didn’t, until I moved it to one of the other ports…
My understanding is the 2 10Gb ports are connected more closely to each other than they are to the 2.5Gb ports, so the fault SHOULD be in the switch, somewhere between the 2.5Gb ports and the 10Gb ports… but also no lights on the SFP+ port, while the 10Gb RJ45 does still blink
Plus in some countries including Australia, upload speeds are seen as a business feature they can charge more for, resulting in increasingly ridiculous disparities and making wfh and selfhosting very annoying
(and not a little more either, more like... $800/month for gigabit if they can be bothered to offer you the service)
this is the 8x2.5 + 1x10 design, but in reality the Realtek 8373 chip is just 4x2.5 + 2x10 chip. And then it is either used as-is for 4+2 designs, in case of 5x2.5+1x10 the 10Gbe port is used as 2.5 port and in case of 8x2.5+1x10 the one 10G port is split using that other chip
and if i understand you correctly, the one which doesn't work is the 10Gbe RJ45 port, so maybe what failed for you is the 10Gbe DAC on the 10G link
Not quite, the SFP+ seems completely dead, and the 10Gb RJ45 blinks with activity, but doesn’t seem to pass traffic
🤷♂️
anyway, the above is the design of these switches, with 4+2 switch dropping the 8224 chip
The thing is I only have the 2 switches with SFP+ and the 2 fiber transivers, so I’m limited in what I can do to troubleshoot without buying another switch anyway
to be fair, the 4x2.5 RJ45 + 2x10G SFP+ switches are now around 30 euros on ali
Yeah, mine does seem to be a 4+2 but one of the 10Gb ports has an RJ45 on it, thought it would be MARGINALLY better than an SFP+ to RJ45 adapter for when I upgrade my PC, before I found some 10Gb SFP+ nic’s for $15 on Ali 🤣
But also I might do Amazon this time since it should get here a little quicker
It’s only about $10 more than Ali before shipping, and I have Prime 🤷♂️
Yeah, I forget which it was but I have a spare NIC now, so I’ll probably stick with 2 SFP+ ports this time
I’m dumb, I should just stick the spare Nic in my PC and check it that way 😅
my switches are from Jan-Feb this year, no issues so far. got one 4+2 and three 8+1
Well at least this way I can hopefully know for SURE it’s the switch and not the fiber, after which I will sleep much better 😅
Thanks for the sounding board or else I would have continued being dumb and not thought of putting the spare SFP+ Nic in my PC, even if only for 10 minutes 😅
Ive recently moved and the place that I now live has at&t Fiber Ont connection but i have spectrum. Does this mean I must use at&t's service or can i just get a fiber supported modem then use my existing router to route all my ethernet connections?
Negative
AT&T supplied gateway that connects to the ONT. If you have third party equipment, it has to go through the AT&T gear in one way or another
There IS a way to bypass the BGW-320 though now with a WAS-110 transceiver
https://pon.wiki/guides/masquerade-as-the-att-inc-bgw320-500-505-on-xgs-pon-with-the-bfw-solutions-was-110/#from-the-shell
But of course that requires following the guide AND your own gear to support the transceiver
Masquerade as the AT&T Inc. BGW320-500/505 on XGS-PON with the BFW Solutions WAS-110
If you don't want to do the above then just put the BGW into passthru/"bridge" mode and your router after, it's not TRUE bridge mode but close enough and doesn't need any NAT or anything on the BGW itself
Do you have Spectrum just for TV?
well holy shit
this actually just made my year sir
I have their Internet service currenyly
Then why would you have AT&T?
If you have Spectrum you're not using AT&T's fiber then
Or are you asking about switching?
I moved in a house that currently has the fiber which os at&t and at my old place i had spectrum and ye
I would dump spectrum then 😛
AT&T fiber is cheaper than Spectrum in just about every case for better speed
comcast is cheaper than ATT fiber
as if people in US have choice of internet provider 😄
Land Line, Satellite, 5G, etc
satellite/5g is not really something i would consider as alternative to cable/fiber
Well I was just on a cruise ship for 2 weeks in the middle of europe and the US and was getting over 100mbit
found this on facebook marketplace posted 5 minutes ago. I truely wonder why he never used it...
there is no tun0 option for me in interface helppp
Is anyone on the server familiar with "HiveDisk"? Is it legit? You basically share local HDD space for cloud storage
guys is there an mtik poe switch (20 ports or higher) that can power all 20 ports at the same time?
yes there is https://mikrotik.com/product/crs328_24p_4s_rm
ah, yes, I was looking at this one but wasn't sure if I would be able to do that
thanks a bunch! :)
You are still power limited tho, if you use full 30w of poe on each port you can only use 16
If you mix in some lower power endpoints (15w/7.5w) it can do it on every port
I'm getting bizarre issues where certain machines on my network won't be able to communicate with each other, while others will. For example, I just had:
Home server (192.168.1.10) SFP+ connected via SFP+ to...
Microtik CRS328-24P-4S+RM connected via ethernet to
Unifi USG-PRO-4
and
My PC (192.168.1.11) connected via ethernet to...
A netgear switch connected via ethernet to...
Microtik CRS328-24P-4S+RM connected via ethernet to...
Unifi USG-PRO-4
and
An ESP8266 (192.168.1.156) connected via WiFi to...
A unifi 6 lite access point, connected via ethernet to...
Microtik CRS328-24P-4S+RM connected via ethernet to...
Unifi USG-PRO-4.
My PC can SSH/Ping my home server, no problem.
My home server can ping/curl the ESP8266, no problem.
My PC cannot contact the ESP8266, destination host unreachable
This keeps happening constantly with different devices, some computers can access them, some can't. Sometimes I won't be able to curl a device, then I ping it, then I am able to curl it. This happens regularly with various different devices being unable to contact various other devices on my network.
Anyone have any suggestions?
u w0t m8???
They have like 200mb for $35 in my area
but upload tho!!!! 😛
streaming 🤷 idk, lol
h e l p
I wish Australia wasn't monopolies and bullshit and had literally any options that affordable. My line's only good for 50/20 and that's not considered a problem
you should find out why they charge you more for digital software
Greedy middlemen, plus companies that look at them and decide to follow suit and rip us off directly
mom can't have better than 15/3 VDSL unless she goes 5G, and that is middle of Europe
hey guys, dumb question but can I use 1310nm rated optical transceivers with 1300nm rated optical fiber cables
trying to decide between running new ethernet through my walls or just going fiber optic to avoid the effects of EMI and also as a bit of future proofing
So Windows 10 successfully joined my home domain (DC running Server 2019) but Windows 7 isn’t properly working. It joined to the domain, the computer appears on the DC Computers list too.
Hey @void pier I send you a DM. Just checking it didn't land in your spam folder?

Same in the US. I'm paying for 1000/100, and I routinely get 300/30 Like... How is this F-ing legal?
should i go for mesh or would a good quality 6/6e router do the trick better
im looking for something thatll get consistently fast speeds for video streaming across 3 stories (starting at top)
this tmobile router just doesnt do the trick
I like Eero
Can be pricy but u can get some consistent speeds
even with the basic version
Yea sure
Fiber isnt really "rated" for wavelengths
In datasheets you get info like loss at 1300nm
Loss at 1550nm
Idk who tf these middlemen are, but oh well
Are you not eligible for a FTTN/C to FTTP upgrade?
- In the context of the NBN, the RSPs are middlemen between NBN Co. and the end user. Not that NBN wholesale is cheap to start with...
- Yes I am ineligible for anything better. There's an FTTP rollout planned for a year or whatever away so they won't do anything faster.
RSPs are not at all middlemen between NBN Co. and the subscriber lmao, there is a lot more to delivering internet to a subscribers' premise than just placing an order with NBN Co. Yes, the wholesale rates aren't fantastic, however you do have to consider the investments NBN Co is constantly making in wireless and satellite technologies, as well as expanding the FTTP network. They also hold a lot of debt
Unfortunate that you're stuck on FTTN/C for the time being. There is quite a lot that goes into the N/C to FTTP upgrades, other than just putting the fibre in the pits, however the quoted dates for eligibility seem to be quite accurate in most placed.
We can all thank Malcom and Tony for the Multi Technology Mess.
lol whatever you say
MTM was a crock of shit though and it needlessly inflated the cost of the project
Oh absolutely
Purchasing wholesale from NBN Co. is basically just purchasing dark fibre from the PoI to your premise (Obviously with lots of extra steps)
It's more than that
NBN co has layer 2 to everything
What's left is mostly routing, peering and account+billing services
Admittedly it's no good if you can't buy uplink to other ISPs and access to the undersea cable networks
Purchasing AVC on it's own is useless, unless you have the backhaul required to actually connect your subscribers to the internet
But... they could just centralise that?
Then it'd actually be a monopoly
Vs what we have now, which is also a monopoly
But with the old telco incumbents sitting on top
It's like saying the roads are a monopoly
No
The nbn access network is owned by the Australian people
Yes
It's a corporation actually, technically owned by the government but with all typical corporate obligations, including profitability
I hear they finally gave up on selling it at least, that was originally on the plans
It's still owned by the taxpayer, and for the good of the taxpayer
Whatever you say
The nbn access network is still a whole lot better (monopoly wise) than having Telstra/Optus owning all the last mile infrastructure, meaning they have basically no competition
NBN co underperforms and has no competition on last mile
They do have competition on last mile, however it is very small, because nobody wants to spend the billions required to build a competitor
The best thing you can do is make your local MP aware of the issues you face with the nbn
(Or your provider, if they're who's to blame for your issue)
bruh android doesn't support Ed25519 IPSec keys
made a feature request about it, hopefully it doesn't take 6 years to implement, or I'll do it myself
Do it then append to lineage perhaps so it's not with you alone
whats the best wifi router for me atm? i need wifi 6 or 6e, something that can cover 3 floors starting from the top floor with consistently fast speeds, and under $200
the wifi we have is 400-500mbps down
at 9:30 we got first word about it
at 12:30 emails from external accounts stopped
fun 3 hour notice
I did some basic networking today, installed a couple rj45 wall jacks to bring ethernet to another room properly (i.e., not shoving a cable through a hole in the wall). Turns out my wall is made of drywall on top of drywall on top of wooden shims.
Making the hole was not fun. Setting up the wall jack was.
Hey guys, I recently bought a Grandstream GWM7660 Access Point and I am trying to make it output the same network as my current ASUS Router however am having a lot of trouble. I don't want the AP to output a different WiFi network, which it currently is
@digital barn hi
i can help do you have a computer with a ethernet port or a ethernet to usb adapter?
maybe a laptop with a ethernet
most old laptop have a ethernet port
I do have a PC with an ethernet port, however it would leave the PC without internet. Is that okay?
@regal plover
Also, to throw a spanner in the works, my PC does not have WiFi. Will I need this? I can possibly use my roommates PC 😂
let me look up the model
Sorry I am confused haha
you might can connect wireless
cal connect to the ap's wifi
if you have wifi on the pc
My PC does not have WiFi, and the AP needs POE to power it. Do I use the non-POE port to connect to the PC?
yes non poe
connect to it and go in your web browser
and go to 192.168.1.1 or try 192.168.0.1 in your browser
I know that the IP for the AP is 192.168.1.80
Do I use this?
192.168.1.1 is the IP for the ASUS Router I believe
I could be mistaken, sorry I am doing this off memory as I am at work at the moment and not at home
when you getting home?
i can help you then step by step
@digital barn
tell me what time it is for you now and when you gettign home or you can dm me and then ping me when you ready
I will be getting home in approx one hour
ight ping me then in dms
I want 8000fps in fortnite and I have $300 to spend plz help
we had a wifi 5 router from a few years ago that did the task just fine lmao
and it was $80
3 storeys is quite vague
wdym
3 storeys could mean a 50sqm terraced house, or it could be a 400sqm mansion
It could be american paper walls and floors, or it could be solid concrete
murica, probably like 900sqft/floor
it could vary per floor but id say that's a solid estimate
yeah, the router is on the top floor primarily because ethernet is needed up here
Aha
but it worked fine with the old router before we switched to tmohome internet
the router tmo gives you is a piece of shit tho
lol
https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-c7/v4
this was the router we had
You could just get the ax50 then
my main complaint with it was the fact that all of the ethernet ports literally just didnt work
i would prefer not to buy a tp link router but like i will
Must've been a manufacturing fault
Strange
@regal plover has been an absolute CHAD and sat in a call with me for the past hour and a half configuring my AP as per my messages earlier. We managed to get it to do exactly as I needed it to and I cannot thank them enough. HUGE LOVE
Couldn't have done it without them ♡♡♡
You want something that doesn't exist
i had a router that did that with wifi 5 which was $80
You were probably on 2.4 by the time you reached the ground floor, and competent WiFi 6 routers are not that cheap.
Hi Guys, i Know that Powerline Ethernet Adapters always come in pairs, and i've wondered could i use 3?, like the "main one" and keep adding powerline outlets?
yes but dont do that
it acts as a hub with lots of collisions
How much of an issue it would cause, the people in that house, forbid me to route cables, so getting a decent network will only be possible through powerline
i have to cover 3 major areas of the house, and Wi-fi repeaters/extenders are out of the question due how thick the concrete walls are
imo you would be better off getting a tri-band mesh wifi system. and keeping one of the hubs next to your pc. in most, you can hardwire from the hub to your computer
powerline adapters like that can be iffy
do you have coax in the walls?
maybe one could be ran via powerline and other one moca
No, they just have RJ11
its not for me, its for a friends family, the house is very old and has very thick concrete/brick walls
they have a repeater solution rn, but its horrible, they have coverage but the speeds are attrocious im going to implement Mesh, BUT, i want to use the powerlines to avoid any wi-fi extender scenario
take the cover plate off, there is a deacent chance it is just cat5e in the back
the house is 40 years old
try it
i did, there's only RJ11 because the only thing besides fiber on that house were landlines
i asked if they had coax internet, and nope, they've used the phone company for internet for forever till recently
its wired with cat3?
probably
i could probably find a compromise of a cable going from the patio to one of the rooms
and use the powerline to drop to the first floor near the patio
that wayt the cable is outside of view and hopefully dont care
i'm going to use this, i've had very good experience with them, i'd love to save them some $ using a cheaper brand like Tenda, what are your thoughts?
deco is good
that might be a older unit tho
Ah, is the one i saw in amazon, my "wholesaler" doesnt have commercial units, so i have to get it there
I just swapped from a cat 6 cable to a cat5e cable for my computer's ethernet. My connection is slightly faster with the cat5e cable. Anyone able to explain this? (Note, the picture with the 640mbps upload is the best result out of 10 ookla wifi speed tests with the cat6 cable. The picture with the 786mbps upload is the best result out of 10 ookla wifi speed tests, using the brand new cat5e cable.)
Also, both cables are the same length at about 3 feet. Additionally, the cat 6 cable is only about 6 months old, and the cat 5e cable is brand new. Neither cable has any visible signs of damage.
you arent testing the cable, you are testing your wan so it all depends on your isp
to test cable it is best to have local speedtest/iperf3 server and 2nd pc as a client
gigabit is gigabit if it doesent produce bunch of errors
guys wat is squid proxy used for?
wat is proxy i can't rlly understand it from google
i just installed squid proxy for windows in on a windows 11 thinkpad i don't rlly use and settted it up
now if I connect to the proxy in the client device then i can't access any sites
Is anyone here really good with oracle vm's? I am a complete noob and I am trying to setup a vm on my windows pc to a kali linux vm. I have the vm up and running I think......but I am having a hard time getting an internal HDD to show up in the linux Vm. I have tried some windows powershell commands to get 8tb to register ....but I can't mount it
Any help would be appreciated, not sure if this should go in the linux channel or not
i use a similar model of deco and in the middle of my house (in between all three of them) there is like a dead zone. I have full bars of connection but horrible slow speeds and disconnections. Have you ever experienced that?
Squidproxy sits between clients and the server and caches content from the server so that when the client (or other clients) request the same content from the server, the content is served from Squidproxy instead of the server.
Basically, it speeds up webpage content starting from the second request for the same content.
With the advent of HTTPS, SquidProxy and others like it become far more difficult to set up and use correctly.
For the most part, SquidProxy provides near-zero benefit in a home environment. But can be fun to learn.
There are other caching technologies that can provide benefits though. For example, Apple’s caching can cache iOS and Mac updates, as well as Apple store and I think even iCloud. Useful if you have 2 or more Apple devices at home, but it can only be hosted with a Mac computer.
Another popular caching technology is lancache, which can cache popular game downloads and updates, as well as Windows updates. I think it can cache Steam downloads as well.
All this to say, a caching proxy really only provides benefits when 2 or more devices can regularly use the caching proxy.
The first time a device requests content, the proxy still has to download it the first time before it can send the content to clients who request. And it is generally good practice for proxies to expire and re-download content so it stays in sync with the server.
You would need to pass the internal drive into the VM.
Also, are you using Virtualbox?
not really, i always use them cabled as access points since i dont like the repeater function or wifi extender
Decos with wired backhauls work fantastic
Woah, wdm gear. Epic
i just bought a server for the first time is there anything i need / knowledge
and what upgrades should i do to this item https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126480054455
and i only have 500mbps coming into the house
smels telco-ish
Seeing Ciena and Calix yea
oh
Adtran bought Adva
That defo screams telco
also 48v dc power supplies and batteries
yeah
wierd that telcos didint invent standardised plug for 48v rather than using screw terminals
soo when i tried to go to any site from the client the proxy server just didnt have the site downloaded?
Naw. It would be completely seamless if working correctly. Most likely squidproxy isn’t configured properly, or your browser/computer isn’t configured properly.
Use http://neverssl.com to test. (HTTP and NOT HTTPS)
If that website works, but Google doesn’t, then its time to configure certificates. I can’t help with that.
I love telco rooms
wat
Proxy isn’t configured correctly. Double check with the tutorial you are following to make sure everything is configured correctly.
I used CCProxy
https://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/quick_start.htm (cuz squid doesnt have a ui)
CCProxy Server is an easy-to-use and friendly proxy software for Windows XP/Vista/7/2003/2008. This is a quick start for the beginner to build his own proxy server with this proxy software.
YO
with squid proxy it works on that site idk y it doesn't work on CCProxy
soo to make https work on the server i need to get a ssl certificate..??
I believe so, yes.
need a certificate as it must intercept the encrypted traffic by playing in the middle so it establishes with the site, and then you establish with the proxy to be passed along the traffic
Yup. Local headend, about 5 minutes away from my house. We have around 50 of these sites in and around Oregon.
Also pretty easy to figure out what teleco company this is
everywhere i go i see Sol's rng
wierd that they store cardboard in there
we are not allowed to have anything flamable in dc or idf rooms
Sorta low on space at our company so you kinda just use it as multipurpose area. Datacenter/storage room
Yes I was using virtual box from oracle. I wouldn't know how much of this all works haha. I am using hyper V now and got a 9tb partition now I think, but I'm not super sure how locked off things are
Meanwhile here
Need space? We will build a space
I am spoiled by having dedicated rooms for idf-s and not small ones either
No worries. If it helps, a Virtual machine presents ideal hardware to the guest OS and works very similar to a physical machine. You can also directly pass hardware directly into a virtual machine, but that usually means the physical host computer loses access to the device.
I wish they would have, 48V systems are so goddamn reliable and if they had connectors that regular IT guys weren't afraid of, I imagine it would be more popular in enterprise
Afraid of screw terminals?
So how safe would you say is getting unknown encrypted data? I have the 16tb HDD cut in half to 9tb, then that 9tb is getting the unknown data in a VM in docker
A lot of enterprise folks seem to scoff at punching down CAT cable, let alone working with any sort of electrical wires. Screw terminals are lovely, especially compared to a couple microwave sites we lease space on that gave us access to their DC system... but gave us a PDU that uses solder connections. One of these days we'll swap that out...
Encryption is encryption. A VM doesn’t have any special access or bypass. So however you have your encryption set up- that’s how “safe” it is.
It amazes me to know people dont understand electrical wiring. I specifically have a background with copper and have just now moved to fiber.
It also amazes me how unprofessional professionals can be too. But i guess thats just how things are sometimes.
Could a virus spread from an encrypted vm disk to the rest of my system?
Did someone say unprofessional professionals
Yes
😤😡
Offices often don't have a choice
I mean sure but bruh
LOL. Thats actually not that bad
It’s much better now
Half of that rack was just unused keystones from pots
It's still in a state of disrepair though because the client didn't want to pay for a 24 port switch and insisted we use multiple 6/8 port switches
Yeah ive had jobs that the whole patch panel was for pots
I wouldnt allow that lmao.
Lol
Literally isnt cheaper to get multiple small ones instead of a 24 or 48 port
Cisco isnt even that expensive for a 48 port 2960
They already had a few
Not my problem anymore
Yup.
I feel bad for their MSP, if they ever get one
Ooh nice
Customer got a link from us as a secondary. Had no clue their firewall didnt support multiwan…
Much prettier
That puck on the wall is the copper handoff i gave them.
They had one of those little cisco merraki routers 😭
We've just been using TP-Link ERXXX for SME CPE and they've been working great, and super cheap
lol
Good little guys. Maybe we should use those instead of Connected IO routers for SD-WAN
Interesting, never heard of them
lol
Think of a virtual machine as just another computer on your network. If it’s off, it is difficult for a virus to spread. If it is on, it’s just like having a physical computer with a virus.
It can spread to the host via hypervisor privilege escalation vulnerabilities (if present) or to other computers reachable by the VM over your network if they run vulnerable software (if present). The disk itself being encrypted has no impact on those risks.
We recently acquired a neighbouring WISP network and uh. "Unprofessional professionals" is a good way to describe it. It's amazing how often my techs go to a new site, and there's new and innovating ways to horrify me.
Oh good god
I sure as hell hope they weren’t charging the subscribers for those installs
No no, those are all their tower sites.
If that’s how they have their towers, I can’t imagine the state of the installs though
Most are pretty boring, there's not too much to fuck up there in most cases. But there there's some uh, special ones that we've found. Trying to find the photo here...
lol
Lmao
I do appreciate here in Australia, 99% of broadband of any technology is standardised through the nbn access network
Has anyone in here dealt with AT&T installers lately?
However, since most of the installers are subcontractors, there will occasionally be some dodgy work
I've thrown a couple weeks so far rebuilding the core network site, and it's slow going. Migrated all the servers from bare metal boxes, mostly from 2001-2008, to VMs on a pair new proxmox servers. Ripped out about 8 routers. Found that the building lost a neutral and like 5 amps of power was going through the armour on Bell Canada's fiber optic cable
It's a great time lol
Redoing slapped together sites with awful power to all new 48V modular rectifier shelves
Sounds like a WISP that was more of a hobby, and they couldn’t commit to doing things properly
It's completely bizzare, we particiated in the same funding programs and made some pretty bulletproof, beautiful sites that still have happy customers
But we're looking to clean things up, overhaul the major backbone sites, and start offering something competitive in the area
That poor switch
We have gear rated for outdoor use, and boxes rated to store this stuff properly
That's like... "my dad started a WISP" bullshit
Yeah it definitely looks like that
Our normal small site cabinets are pretty basic, but we try to keep them tidy and have a half decent battery system to run for about 12-24 hours
Yeah that's more like it
Build it right, and you're not having to constantly put out fires
Hap ac2/lite in a metal box though?
It's basically a canary for "the power is out" and to provide wifi for techs since the area has really bad cellular coverage
The ones we put in cabinets like that are usually routers that came out pile of rental routers that are too beat up to redeploy
Fair enough
I had a GrooveA with a dead radio I ran as router-on-a-stick to do some stuff once
It looked a bit cursed but it did the job
Le bump. I’m trying to figure out if I should install conduit in the attic or just let them do it when they come to put my fiber in
Your best bet is asking AT&T directly
So what about docker in a VM. Where does that fit in with your analogy
Most ATT installers will only install on exterior walls unless you have a conduit from what I’ve heard. Our house came with a conduit so they just used that whenever they installed our Fiber.
They don’t go in attics or crawlspaces from what I’ve heard.
T mobile 5g home internet is getting to the point where cable providers wont be competing on price but pure speed and latency(and price still)
this is what i get at my place stock with the g4ar, i plan on getting some external antennas to see how far i can push it
...It's not an analogy, it's just what it is.
That said Docker's risks are similar except that two different potential weaknesses are also present:
- If directories are mounted from the host via a mount, symlinks may expose files on the host.
- As Docker containers share the same OS kernel as the host, if you don't keep your kernel up to date and it's vulnerable to something that would grant root access if ran on the host, it may also be possible to compromise the host from the guest.
This doesn't automatically make Docker or VMs particularly dangerous to run if done properly, patched regularly, restricted from unnecessary network access etc.
Is NextDNS any good? I am trying to find a DNS server that has decent blocking options. Yesterday Quad9 was down for some time and I switched to AdGuard DNS, and I noticed that it was blocking ads better. And I thought maybe there is an even better DNS that blocks even more ads, trackers and such. From what I've heard NextDNS has a whole firewall configuration, or something like that
For home?
Yes
Have you considered pihole?
That way you can customise it to block even more :)
Also, it’s self hosted
Because if a service is free, you’re the product
Yes, and I think I should get an OpenWRT compatible router at this point, and then set up firewall rules on it
the only raspberry pi i have is a pi zero, and it doesn't really have much, I don't think connection at the speed of microusb would be that great
Yeah, pi zero might not work too well
Do you think openwrt would work out as great as pi-hole?
I just prefer openwrt, since i don't want things to be too complex
Yeah, apparently openwrt dns filtering works pretty well
Alright, thanks for advice, but while I don't have an OpenWRT capable router, is NextDNS still a good option for more than usual control?
I’ve got no personal experience, but if it’s working well for you, I say go for it
I guess it's the matter of trying, will check it out later and I'll let you know how it goes
Well if i needed i could always use xt60 on it, just wierd that there is no standard.
We dont use punch downs at all except for some analog telephony. Cat6a toolless keystones on both sides
I've seen Anderson power pole connectors on the DC generators we use as well, those can handle a lot of amps
In enterprise if you go dc you go high voltage dc and those use connectors, i haven't played with it tho
You can be naughty and plug hvdc into regular ac equipment and it will handle it fine
Except if it uses transformers but what enterprise equipment uses that
Saf-D-Grid are connectors used for hvdc(380v)
Adguard can be self hosted as well, I dunno if you can do it without a license though
I haven't had amazing luck with the toolless keystones, so we just use the punch down type. I keep meaning to look into the systems that will punch down all eight wires at once in some proprietary tool
Your issues could come from using low quality ones, we have 100% success rate with using datwler ones
These
I imagine that's the case, the local suppliers can be hit or miss.
and this is something that wasn't even on my radar, interesting!
Datacenters get all the cool stuff
CPU on it'd be the bottleneck at ~100mbps or so. If it wasn't doing routing it'd be ample for DNS e.g. Pihole
It's honestly a really awesome temporary solution, and just $2/mo (or $20/yr) for personal use, which has unlimited queries compared to 300k/mo in the free plan
I get to manage denylists, although it's not the best (you have to enter the URLs one by one), but it's better than nothing
Why does my ping keep randomly going to 1000-5000 on games and vc ( i have ethernet speeds 400down 500up)
Are you using isp provided router trash?
guys i wana install openwrt on my usb drive lmao
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DET3EMl6-RM
following this tutorial I installed openwrt on it thru rufus but when I try to boot to it my pc just says the usb doesn't have any boot options
In this video, we are going to install OpenWRT on x86 hardware, aka PC, server or laptop. This will give you the best performance thanks to the powerful hardware the x86 (Intel/AMD) architecture offer.
The steps is simple: create a live USB, connect all the cables and powering on the PC (with USB plugged in, of course)
It had been explained in t...
not sure rufus can do it, OpenWRT is a full image. I would use balenaEtcher or Win32diskimager https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/installation/openwrt_x86#windowsmacos
gonna try etcher
how did u do it?
i usually put it on a hard drive, so i boot up ubuntu live usb and perform downloading/extracting/writing image to a hard drive directly from Linux
maybe rufus would work too in DD mode (not ISO)
i have a question.
and i saw this TP link AX1500 at $39.99 clearance. Is it worth swaping?
Depends on what you have already.
It's WiFi 6 but it's mediocre (2x2, firmware).
Thx for the answer i currently use asus ac3200 which was boight like 10 yrs ago
Well in that case... it depends. 4x4 devices are basically not a thing and your router is too old to support more efficient usage of it and is therefore effectively limited to 2x2 (~400mbps on WiFi real world)
But the benefits are not particularly significant in a device like the AX1500
I'd only switch if you really hate the current one and need a very cheap alternative
Oh one other reason to consider switching is WPA3
But the AX1500 is already about 4 years old
And security is such an afterthought in consumer routers, especially ones that aren't so new so it might still have vulnerabilities regardless
Got it thx. My knowledge on router is very nil wasnt sure if it was better or not
It's nearly impossible for me to recommend anything consumer to people lol
I c. Yeh i saw the price and since router changes are not super drastic every year like cpu or gpu i was not sure. Since my device is like 10 yr old i thought it might be a time to change
You should at some point for WPA3 but in practice WiFi hacking is not a likely threat for a consumer, and you should probably replace it when it becomes insufficient for practical reasons like getting a faster internet connection and being limited by it.
Thank you for ur detail advice
No problem :)
If I have cat6 cable running through my walls would a cat5 wall termination point be a bottleneck?
My Windows suddenly not getting along with my USB WiFi adapter, blue screen
I remove it and it seems to run fine till I connect it again
if it has 8 pins it is ok
for 10g you could have issues
Thanks most of the wall termination points are cat 6
Hey, do you have any equipment to recommend that is not too expensive for a two story house?
Downstairs and upstairs, routers can be connected to each other by cable.
Good enough for streaming and to which will be connected about 10 wifi devices?
And use 1 wifi id that devices switch on the fly betwen routers with better signal.
Thank you.
Could get Ubiquiti's U6+ or U7 pro for each floor. Not sure what "not too expensive" means to you, but there ya go.
somehow i cant connect to my HPE Server with SUSE installed after wifi restarted. i tried checking the ip address and it changed, so i tried connecting to the new ip address and somehow it still shows connection timed out. anyone know why?
Yeah, UniFi AP's are really cheap. Do you already have routing and switching hardware @modern grove ?
Is this the right Channel to talk about server stuff? Or is there a better one that I'm missing
yes
it should really be called infrastructure
I have a Dell 5820 server, 64gb of RAM and a GTX 1080 as the display card (it was laying around) I want to know if the W-2223 I have equipped is strong enough to run game servers for a group of friends and myself or should I upgrade to something a bit beefier like a W-2295,65,55,45 along those lines or should I go ahead and just scrap the project and build a system around my 5900x for game server use once I upgrade to the 9590x? I already have the full system for the dell 5820 (two of them actually) but it seems the crippling factor is the CPU.
Nope, i will gave a modem from ISP, and atm i have nothing so im full for sugestions. Im not an expert with networking so im hoping for easy setup.
Grab a UniFi cloud gateway ultra and some U7 pros and poe injectors
id love to be in the situation where i have a 1080 “lying around”
highly depending on the game you will host
but for non competative stuff it should do it fine
Minecraft, 7 days to die, the generic survival crafting games that allow private server hosting
minecraft is the gold standard test
minecraft is just highly single threaded
Just tired of paying these servers companies $20 a month for sub par performance in a sever, I have 1gb/s fiber internet my network is relatively strong overall I've tried to do it in the past on the PC that I play the game on but do notice a decrease in overall performance on both my end and the server end
And if we hop out of something for a bit and come back a few months later we have to start all over again unless I keep paying them their monthly money, quite frustrating
trying doesent hurt
True, test run it and see, like I said it seems silly to build an entire system around the 5900x just for server and NAS when I have the 5820 which can serve that purpose just as well, if the 2265 (iirc) is only $300 on eBay so coutbe a worthy upgrade if I need better multicore performance and something with a bit higher of a clock speed
I know from my research the 5900x is an animal when it comes to game server hosting and I guess would do fine in a NAS
lga2066 xeons are kind of rare, 2011v3 and newer LGA3647 are much cheaper due to being everywhere
My motherboard is proprietary so I would need to build a system around the cpu again
Case/motherboard PSU is all dell, I'm assuming my RAM is transferable as it's just 8x8gb of ECC DDR4 I swapped in the crusty HDD's for some 2.5" SSD's and I have windows 11 for workstations on my system
Guys my father has given me the task of purchasing a better router to replace the cheap ISP provided one
And I would like to get something that has good software
Any recommendations really we only need something with Wifi 6 preferably and at least 4 Gigabit LAN Ports
UniFi Express or Dream Router would be what I’d recommend if you don’t need crazy speed
Another good option is the GLInet flint 2
wifi 6e router, computer routers, wifi 7 router, nighthawk router, vpn router, msi router, wifi routers for home, wifi6 router, 10gb router, wifi router wifi 6, 2.5gb router, rt-ax86u, axe16000, axe7800, raxe500, gigabit router, ax6000, fiber optic router, rt-ax88u, ax55, ax5400, gt-ax11000, wi-f...
UniFi’s software is better in terms of design / ease of use but the GliNet gives you more features and cool things like network-wide adblocking (with customizable filters)
Cloud gateway ultra is also a fantastic choice if you have wiring for WAPs
This too. I was just assuming they didn’t want to spend a ton
I'm always good at pointing people in expensive directions lmao
I'm looking to get a cat6 outdoor cable roughly 25m, anyone know where to buy one for a decent price in the UK?
I buy super cheap network stuff and hope it doesn't explode.

stranded or solid?
shielded?
prefabed or just the cable?
Solid, doesn't have to be shielded, just cable
Category 6 unshielded twisted pair cable is designed for use in next generation data communications networks, and will comfortably support all present
or minimum quantity of this (30m) https://www.cablemonkey.co.uk/cat6-cable/87182-armoured-external-cat6-ftp-solid-cable.html
Connectix armoured external Cat6 FTP Cable is designed for external use and direct burial. Cable is cut to length and must has a minimum order
Thank you! I didn't know what sites were reputable or what the cost of cat6 is.
it is bit overpriced but at lower quantaties it is what it is
i get cat7 industrial cable for bout 0.9e / meter but i buy kilometers of the stuff
Wifi card or ethernet cable?
Wired if you can
👍
Can someone please help me pick a managed switch & understand the options available.
I currently have:
- Main switch (TP-Link 24-Port Gigabit) TL-SG1024D
- ISP router (50down 10up) ADSL internet
- 3x WiFi 6 APs
- DIY NAS (Unraid doing, SMB, NVR, Ubiquity-controller, HA) Cat6A FTP
- IP cameras
- Cat5e utp <30m to lots of rooms
- Cat7A S/FTP to some places and AP's
Recently there are some devices, IoT, TV box etc. that I don't trust. I want to isolate the IP cameras and have multiple WIFI networks...
I think what I need is a managed switch? to isolate the unmanned switch to a single VLAN on the main network, then have other VLANS for different groups or individual devices?
- Can a managed switch connect multiple VLANs to the ISP router (internet) while keeping the VLAN traffic Isolated?
- Is a managed switch the same as a computer with multiple NICs?
- Is it correct to say I can put a VLAN-aware NIC in my NAS to connect to multiple VLANS. i.e. 1 for the NVR docker, 1 for the file sharing...
- Can I isolate individual devices (to the internet), or would each device need it's own vlan?
Since the internet is only 50mbps I am only really after a 1G switch.
I may in the future run a fiber to a building at the end of the garden so 1, 2, or 3 SFP+ may be nice.
The APs need PoE+ so I will probably stick with the passive 48v PoE injector to keep cost down.
I would like it to a similar size to the current switch.
I would like it to be very cheap
FANLESS
How hard is it for people to spell Ubiquiti correctly :( /s
spell correct 😆
The ubiquity of Ubiquiti means Ubiquiti are ubiquitous and so ubiquity is almost correct when referring to ubiquitous Ubiquiti equipment. 🤪
- Can a managed switch connect multiple VLANs to the ISP router (internet) while keeping the VLAN traffic Isolated? You can do this, however you'd either need a L3 switch or another router that's just in that VLAN
- Is a managed switch the same as a computer with multiple NICs? Yes, but no
- Is it correct to say I can put a VLAN-aware NIC in my NAS to connect to multiple VLANS. i.e. 1 for the NVR docker, 1 for the file sharing... Yes, you can do this. Do I have any idea how? No.
- Can I isolate individual devices (to the internet), or would each device need it's own vlan? Usually you can do this, once again L3
TP-Link Omada switches are relatively cheap, and have a great UI
A more experienced person will probably want to correct some of those details
just now learning about L3 switches https://ascentoptics.com/blog/layer-2-vs-layer-3-switch-understanding-the-differences/ 😆
Yes, it sounds like that's what you want
I have 1.2 Gbps internet, but when I am running a speed test on my desktop (wired) I am getting only 93.5 Mbps
I have the same ISP at home, and have the same speed and it is significantly faster
did u used to get 1gbps on that same system?
got to "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections"
the right click on the Ethernet adapter > Status
does the Speed say 100.0Mbps or 1g
It says 100 Mbps
It could very much be the cable I have, cause I found a random ethernet cable in my apatment and used it rather than my super long one
what is the name of the network adapter?
Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller
The cable that I found and am using could very well not be able to run at 1Gb
I think it is the router or the cable. Does the connector have all 8 wires or just 4?
what is the router... do all ports support 1G
I have a brand new xFi XB8 so it should
It can go up to 2.5 Gbps
I am wondering if its something with the path cables that are going into the wall or the cables that are in the actual wall, but I have a buddy that lives in this same apartment complex that I dont believe has this issue. I am also going to try the cat5 cable that I know actually works at Gbps
cause if tis 8 wires it could be a low level cat that doesnt support the speeds I want
The long cable that i have is Cat 6
try your cable straight into the router.. then if it works you know the problem is the cable in the wall
I cantr
its in another room in the apartment
The cable that was in the wall is Cat5e so i dont think the cable is the prob lem
i'd be surprised if it that if it only a short run. maybe it isn't terminated properly or has a broken connection.
cable I replaced it with is saying 100 Mbps
so it is the one in the wall that is the issue?
maybe it isn't terminated properly or has a broken connection in the wall box in your room.
bypass the in-wall ethernet cable / wall plates. I have come across literally hundreds of poorly terminated keystone jacks, poor quality network cable runs, and general shoddyness when it comes to in-wall wiring.
re-terminated in the wall box in your room.
I msg my roomate so I can go into his room to plug my pc into it
I have another wall termination I could try
Whats the chance its my ethernet controller
Imma see if its something stupid on my xfinity app
@cinder plank Tried a port on the outside of my room and got 1.0 Gbps after wiggling all the cables around in the router and wall patches. Then I tried the one in my room and I am getting 1.0 Gbps now, so my thought is that something wasnt seated all the way
wiggling isn't necessarily a reliable solution.. maybe re-terminate them if you want it to be reliable.
When I setup the router yesterday I didnt make sure that they were all sat in correctly
If I lose the Gbps and it goes back to 100 Mbps then Ill probably end up asking the management if that is something they could do, but for the time being I am okay with it
Ah, yes - the faster you wiggle the cables / wall jacks, the faster your download speed. /s
ah, okay. maybe just not plugged in properly 👍
Seriously though, sounds like some of the wires aren't making full connection. if wiggling once solves the issue for a while, great! Just know that the issue might recurr again in the future.
They are now and thats good enough for me
If the problem appears though Ill probably take some more extensive measures to solving the issue than I did now
1 nine of uptime 😆
Xfinity speed test says I am at 935 Mbps now and I have 1.2Gbps internet is pretty good
and considering that my controller is running at 1.0Gbps there is some loss in there, but its still nice
DOCSIS?
ewwwww DOCSIS
ikr 🤮
What has DOCSIS done to yall
gave slow upload speeds
Had a stupid and confusing naming system
Along with just being shit in general
so would anyone know how i can possibly get the wifi to work at my hotel on my switch
it requires me to enter and password and username on the internet and it doesn’t prompt me to it
Probably stole their girlfriends from them, or bullied them in high school. Or maybe it's the exact opposite, and the slow upload speeds was one way for it to get revenge. 😈
As expected... how evil of them...
I thought it was as simple as docsis 3, 3.1, 4.
Pretty much, yeah
It's just a bit of a mess here lol
kek
It's shit and shouldn't have ever had any more time and money invested into it once FTTH became a realistic option
I have never seen that number higher than 3.45mbps before...
I live in rural America, and got fiber semi-recently. The ISP has plans that go up to 8GIGs, but we just got the 500mb plan. We had Starlink before, which don't give me wrong was great(250~ Down, 20~ Up, 40 ping), but wow fiber is the best thing ever...
Yea it's great how many fiber co-ops have been popping up for rural peeps
Finally. Decent internet
I'm on "Super Fibre 1" package, it's all ADSL2 from the cabinet box to my house 😎
I got to wonder how this is even legal.
I guess it's because it's in fine print or smt
or because most users just don't know?
Yeah, they definitely need to be scrutinised on the wording, I already knew the cabling would be ADSL, but other people just wouldn't have any idea it's not fibre. We've had virgin media laying new fibre cables down (fttp) can't wait to switch over. Going from 24mbps to 2 gig
Eastlink, the regional cable company, has been branding their cable as "fibre link" because sure, technically it's fiber most of the way, just not where it counts lol
briefly they resorted to just hiding their 10-15 mbps upload speeds but reverted back
Best bet is to hotspot from your laptop or something. The switch doesn't let you login with captive portals.
I'm trying to go from my nighthawk router to a pf sense router I'm building but I know nothing about network cards so I thought I'd ask here
https://a.co/d/iMt83Su
Looking at the 4x 2.5G RJ45
and the 2x 10G SFP+
The reason for 2.5 is because multiple users play VR using Quest headsets wirelessly over the network.
And the SFP goes to a Poe network switch that will have a number of cameras connected to it, plus mesh APs
Oh, please reply ping
Forgot to mention that I have a U6 PRO for the AP
