Before I had kids I had 2 sound cards and I used a virtual sound setup to split across applications

This allowed me to separate for example, video play video onto speakers and then my headphones with discord and ingame. While at the same time my OBS would only use the sound lines for discord and headphones. In theory, I don’t need 2 sound cards for it however it does make it slightly easier for me at the time from a setup point of view

OBS using 1 sound channel as opposed to several and knowing those lines are hardware isolated to 2 devices made it easier, for me atleast

I could also go further - split a line in video editing while recording to come out of speakers but also not interfere with the other 2. That’s was the more useful part.
