I could get a brand new Vive Pro for escentially 499€ (rather then the 649€ that HTC is asking)

gentle coral
#

Resellers are only scalpers if they are selling the item during the items production window for more then 20% above its first hand cost. (At least that's my opinion).

silk oasis
#

Well I was thinking about pro but Im not sure about it, doesnt it have only 90hz? and worse controlers?

jagged echo
#

U mean the first production window? So just on release

#

I can get that tbh

haughty thistle
jagged echo
#

@silk oasis yes vive controllers are huge dildos and it only can do 90

gentle coral
#

@haughty thistle Oh true if you are getting new vive pro it makes sense as the pro eye is still quite expensive.

haughty thistle
#

Also the Vive Pro lenses are closer to those of the OG Vive then anything else recently released

jagged echo
#

Why would u want close to og vive lenses they were super low res

silk oasis
#

You know what I hate about scalpers? Mostly they doesnt give a fuck about our hobby, they are just here to make money of group of people that are pasionate about something

gentle coral
#

Lenses are not the same as screens

jagged echo
#

Oh oopsieee

#

My b

haughty thistle
#

The OG Vive lenses aren't the greatest with blurryness at the edge of the FOV, small sweetspot and godrays AF, but one thing they have going for them is a large FOV without having the lenses too close to the face (as they use quite big lenses actually)

#

There are really only two things going for the Vive Pro over the Index, and that is it's OLED Screens and Wireless adapter support. Other then that, might as well go with an Index (which I already have)

gentle coral
#

I really wish it was easier to build custom wireless systems, but so many of the parts are hard to integrate well. Picture a wireless adapter that works for all headsets, and is at 100Ghz (a much better frequency then the 60Ghz 802.11AD standard, due to less molecular interference) communication band. I don't remember the theoretical bandwidth, but it would be enough to have pretty low compression if the encoding and decoding are done well.

silk oasis
#

I would love to be able to buy wireless display ports adapters

gentle coral
#

They exist in the cinema and events industry but are not all that good for moving targets and take a lot of power, and are bulky.

#

Wireless hdmi is much more common though

haughty thistle
#

Plus: From what I've read about a wireless HDMI adapter, it had horrendous Latency. Like a second or two

gentle coral
#

Yep some are that bad

haughty thistle
#

It wasn't even that cheap. I think it was like 200$ or something...

gentle coral
#

Most i have heard are at best a hundred ms. On $500 and more models.

silk oasis
#

Maybe one day wifi will be able to transmit like 32gbit/s and we could just use it 😛

gentle coral
#

Haha, "laughs in physics".

haughty thistle
#

Wifi 6e is a step in the right direction, but the marketing is BS. Only Wifi 6e (with the e not the one without) is actually running at 6GHz. Regular Wifi 6 is just a protocol improvement over Wifi 5 (or Wifi 5GHz). Wifi 6e is where the actual meaningful improvements come in for VR

silk oasis
#

"802.11ay can achieve much higher speeds: 277 Gb/s" Isn't that enough?

haughty thistle
#

Those are theoratical speeds

#

Real world speeds are usually much lower then that

silk oasis
#

yeah so even if we split it by 10, it should be enough right?

haughty thistle
#

My Router says it can transit up to 1.3Gb/s (Gigiabytes). In real world performance it's limited to around 700Mbit/s (Megabits) (which is much lower)

silk oasis
#

its more then half of the speed 🙂

haughty thistle
#

700Mbit/s is closer to 87.5Mb/s

silk oasis
#

ah GB didnt read the ()

gentle coral
#

The problem with 60Ghz is everything that interferes with it.

haughty thistle
#

Yeah... But it's like the best we have rn...

#

Anything over requires insane electronics to drive afaik

silk oasis
haughty thistle
#

Prolly 6.77Gbit/s

#

I've seen marketing crap pulled off like this multiple times

silk oasis
#

Tbh I hate using bits instead of bytes thats the crapiest

#

also gigabytes as 1000 not 1024 O.o I hate that

haughty thistle
#

I haven't really seen Wifi 5 routers that have theoratical rated speed of over 5Gb/s

silk oasis
#

well.. ofc. giga = 1000 but still...

gentle coral
#

That would probably be an AC11000 class router 11000 Mbps is a bit over 1.2 GBps.

#

To go above 1.5 GBps you need enterprise grade equipment usually

silk oasis
#

Tbh I would prefere to just use cable 😛

gentle coral
#

But yep the 802.11ay spec could theoretically transfer displayport 1.4 wirelessly

silk oasis
#

how far are we from first routers with 802.11ay?

gentle coral
#

But to get around the interference issues you would probably be looking at needing multiple directional transmitters placed around a room so that you can't block it easily. Or bigger horns on the headset receiver. As i was easily able to occlude the wireless receiver if i was bending over to pick something up off the ground once or twice, and the decrease in fidelity was instantly noticeable.

#

802.11ay is already available in a few enterprise buisness solutions and a few short distance airfiber solutions.

#

Qualcomm started production of chipsets in 2018

#

There seems to be a big lack of consumer 802.11 ay transmitters and receivers.

silk oasis
#

Hmm thats interesting 🙂

haughty thistle
#

Oof... I just calculated how much it would cost me to get a Full Vive pro + Wireless setup and it would be almost 900€ already including the 100€ cupon I have... Now I'm not so sure whether I want to get it or not tbh...

#

I might just get the Vive Pro now (for the OLED screens), and the Wireless adapter later

rustic garnet
#

Can you use the vive wireless with any other headsets

#

It's just usb+hdmi isn't it?

gentle coral
#

Most other headsets either use displayport, or use a different method for power, which would not work with the wireless adapter. Also I don't remember if the wireless adapter for the pro uses the proprietary connector or the non proprietary connector.

rustic garnet
#

God when is vr cabling gonna get standardized

#

Virtuallink was on the right track and they just dropped it

upper delta
#

how do i get the mic to work on vr chat? i unmuted it in game and went thru my pc settings and came up with nothing

#

desktop mode if that helps

night gale
#

any upcoming inside out tracking vr headsets that seem to be around the same quality of tracking as the oculus quest 2 but is not an oculus vr headset?

grim falcon
#

Would you recommend the quest 2 as a good vr headset

sullen linden
#

big navi has come kinda vrlink thing

#

wierd how nvidia dropped it tho

haughty thistle
haughty thistle
# rustic garnet Virtuallink was on the right track and they just dropped it

From what I've heard the biggest problem with VirtualLink was that it couldn't supply enough power for headsets like the Index, while also being too new for any headset to just use it as it's main connector. Basically, it always would've been just utilised with adaptors (similar to how the Index would've used it) just so that other people without said connector can also use the headset.
Besides that, It's always easier adopting a higher spec connector down to a lower spec one, but not the other way around, which is another reason to do it this way...

#

Ultimately, it wouldn't have solved the proprietary connectors on the headsets, it just would've switched what kind of connector(s) you use on the back of your PC

gentle coral
#

There were also stability and cost issues, as making a full length cable that supports virtualLink would be extremely expensive due to needing to transfer the data and power over a longer distance than most cables are usually tested for, or rated to. I haven't heard if the AMD cards have a virtualLink port, or if it is just a displayport alternate mode USB type c port (there is a difference). The proper answer to all these issues will probably end up being just have all headsets use two type c connectors at the each end (usb+power, displayport). And if your computer can't power it over the type c port, have it come with a power breakout adapter.

thick nest
thick nest
#

bc its probably the best vr headset currently

#

but if you budget is lower you can either get a quest 2 with outstanding value or a reverb g2

haughty thistle
#

The Quest 2 is a decent headset, with decent PCVR support. But if you're willing to spend more, you'll probably find a better headset for PCVR pretty easily

thick nest
#

but one thing about the reverb g2 is that the controllers arent good

#

they dont look comfortable

#

the reverb g2 would have been very close to the index and probably wayy better and very close to the index if it shipped with the knuckles controllers

#

i know the price of the knucles controllers are pretty expensive

rustic garnet
#

So just a long usb c cable

haughty thistle
# thick nest they dont look comfortable

Apparently the G2 Controllers are pretty comfortable (stillw waiting on my G2 so can't confirm). The biggest downfall imo on the G2 Controllers is the lack of capacitive sensors. This means social VR applications are going to be hindered by these Controllers

haughty thistle
# rustic garnet You could have one on the headset end as well

I already explained why that wouldn't have been the case:
Because most headset would've just opted for the VirtualLink connector as an adapter from their proprietary connector, rather then fully embracing the format. VirtualLink had also the problem it was somewhat of a proprietary connector on it's own with it's USB 3.1 speed rather then the standardized USB 3.0 seen when using DisplayPort Alternative Channel

iron turtle
#

My Valve Index is not working with the pc

#

it dosen't load my games

#

its a hassle for me

thick nest
#

wdymm

#

it doesnt load games

#

can you give more info please

thick nest
#

i would have given the g2 a 10 if it came with knuckles

haughty thistle
#

Like I said, I can't give a proper assessment without having one on hand, but from what I can tell, both the production quality as well as Controller shapes are much more hand friendly then what they used to be on WMR

#

The old ones were pretty Square with the small Plattform kindof just Glied in at the top. The grip button was in a very unnatural place, hard to press and digital

#

The G2 Controllers are much rounder with an analog grip button and a shaped trigger (compared to the flat one on the old WMR ones)

thick nest
#

iits bascially a quest 1 controller with the ring in the middle

haughty thistle
#

Considering the G2 Controllers missing the capacitive sensors, it isn't as great as the Touch V2 (OG Quest/Rift S). The G2 Controllers are also significantly larger

thick nest
#

and the ring is pointing outwards instead of inwards at the end

haughty thistle
#

That tracking ring hasn't changed in size, and from what I remember on my Lenovo WMR, that thing is huge

thick nest
#

what do capacitive sensors tacker

#

track

#

ohhh

haughty thistle
#

Whether you have your finger on the analog stick, face buttons or on the Trigger on the back

thick nest
#

yeah thats actually cool

#

bc it gives developers more options to give users immersiveness

haughty thistle
#

Since the G2 is lacking them, Social VR games like VRC are going to be not as great with these Controllers

thick nest
#

yeah

#

but im guessing you can get a pair of knuckles to connect with it

haughty thistle
#

VRC uses the capacitive sensors to do hand gestures. On the G2, you have to press the buttons to simulate that :/

thick nest
#

does that work on the q2 controllers

#

i wanna try that out actually

haughty thistle
#

You can use Knuckles, but like with any other headset, you have to bring your own lighthouses as well as dongles

thick nest
#

yeah

#

at that point im guessing just get an index

haughty thistle
#

Yep

#

Although, if you're more into sim games, you might not even care about the Controllers, or maybe you already have an Index in which case the G2 headset is an upgrade (you can just use any native SteamVR headset as a pair of dongles by only leaving the video connector unplugged)

thick nest
#

nice

#

i wanna see how good it will look in games

#

when it gets here

haughty thistle
#

According to Bestware, I can expect mine to arrive on the 10th. The batch should arrive today actually, so I might get a shipping notice today even if everything goes right

rustic garnet
thick nest
#

lol

thick nest
#

hopefully

#

nothing goes wrong

haughty thistle
#

Same herr

#

The 10th is the day after tomorrow for me

gentle coral
haughty thistle
#

I guess one never stops learning

gentle coral
#

Alsi for people wondering about the G2 controllers i talked about them in here a few days ago

haughty thistle
#

All I knew was that the implementation in VirtualLink was not standard confirm xD

thick nest
gentle coral
#

Yep Virtuallink swapped the 2.0 lane to be 3.0 5gb

thick nest
#

my excitment level is 1000000

gentle coral
#

Or usb 3.0 power 27watts if I remember correctly

#

Let me repost my accessing of the g2 controllers again

haughty thistle
#

Wouldn't a link to your last message about the Controllers suffice?

gentle coral
#

Controller ergonomics i would give a C+, buttons B, main trigger C-, side trigger D-, stick D, battery access C.

I am most disappointed by the side trigger as it is in a bad location for people with medium to large hands as it starts to far forward, and is to soft. I expect I am going to be accidentally pressing it a lot. It is the only part I found fundamentally worse in every aspect compared to the original WMR controllers. Though the main trigger is also very soft.

I will probably 3d print some controller mods to help fix the issues in ergonomics. At least until I get some index controllers and base stations.

If I want to hold it properly there are massive gaps all over the place, and my grip on the controller becomes very weak.

Also the stick is way to small

Its smaller then the old WMR controller. It is about half the size of a normal Xbox stick. And the texture is terrible for edge control. This means people need to have their thumb over the whole stick to use it, instead of just needing about 30% like most console controllers. I will definitely 3d print a cover for the stick.

Bigger sticks on controllers are better for all hand sizes due to the ability to reach them easier, and use them with only a portion of their finger.

thick nest
#

i kinda expected that actually

#

they should have switched to knuckles

#

or gone cheaper and fully copied oculus tbh

gentle coral
#

I think the main issue is that HP designed the controller instead of Microsoft, or actually getting an xbox controller team member to give input.

Its like they tried to copy oculus while never actually having tried the oculus touch controllers and just looked at pictures.

The proportions just seem weird in a few aspect, mainly the side button and the stick.

Though I have been enjoying my G2, and will post my review here in a few days.

thick nest
#

yeah imagine if xbox designed that

#

DAMN

#

it would be sickkk

#

and actually verry comfortable

haughty thistle
#

I personally find the Switch Pro controller more comfortable

gentle coral
#

Its why i actually feel the original WMR controllers felt better in terms of the buttons.

I can definitely tell Microsoft probably didn't have input on the controllers due to all the issues that any of their controller hardware people would pick up instantly.

Having a recent Xbox controller, and both sets of WMR controllers here, I can tell that the Xbox controller designers worked on the old standard controller based on how the triggers and buttons feel.

haughty thistle
#

The Sticks are also smoother and the ABXY buttons also feel better to me on the Switch Pro controller

gentle coral
#

I got a Dualsense controller and using it and the G2 in VR games is great so far

haughty thistle
#

The Old WMR controllers were an ergonomic mess. As if the Xbox team said what parts to use and then the Windows or surface team designed the damn' thing

gentle coral
#

Just hope updated haptics come to steam for reactive triggers.

gentle coral
haughty thistle
#

At least from what I've heard the PS5 Controllers have a battery life of roughly 2h...

gentle coral
#

My idea of the WMR pitch meeting to dell, acer, asus, lenovo, hp, samsung ...

Microsoft- here we have a prototype WMR controller built by some xbox people.

Everyone-can we use it

Microsoft- even better you can hire a ergonomics team and design your own, and just use the parts we recommend.

Everyone- let's just use their one, Xbox team built it.

Microsoft- but its a prototype.

Everyone- so?

Microsoft (internal)- why do i even try to help these companies.

#

@haughty thistle I always use my xbox and Playstation controllers plugged into my computer, so i don't really care about battery most of the time.

thick nest
#

bascially yeah

#

yeah me too

#

i use a nacon wired controller

#

its bascially if ps4 and xbox made a controller

gentle coral
#

I am excited as i might get back into designing controllers and haptics soon, and with the somewhat sad state of third party controllers for VR I think I have a few ideas that are finally viable.

thick nest
#

that would be sick

#

my modeling sucks currently

#

i would like to improve them

#

but im not sure when i can start

pastel echo
#

I reall want to enjoy VR theatre gaming

#

It's so fun but I just can't get it to click for me

#

Currently playing Fallout 4 in big screen

gentle coral
#

@pastel echo do you mean playing non vr games in a VR headset?

pastel echo
#

Yeah

#

I'm doing that with Fallout 4 right now using my speakers after taking off the Rift ear things but even though it's fun I just can't really find myself wanting to do this regularly

#

Maybe it's a resolution thing though

gentle coral
#

I agree that there is still something a bit off. A few reasons i have found that have caused me issues is not having a pass-through or VR synchronized keyboard, mouse, and controller. And the VR spaces to play games on a floating giant screen are not all that well made, and distract from the gaming. Resolution is also sometimes an issue but i need to test with my G2 to see if the extra resolution really helps. Once VR can be used instead of a monitor for any use case i will be very happy.

#

I think if passthrough was better for using keyboard and mouse it would make a big difference

pastel echo
#

how do you mean pass through?

#

I don't quite understand

gentle coral
#

The only easy way to view a real physical keyboard while in VR is to use the headset cameras in passthrough mode.

pastel echo
#

OH

#

I didn't even think of that

#

I have about 90% keyboard memorized sorry for not realizing that's what you meant

gentle coral
#

Yep i am decent at typing while not looking, but if i need to use multiple devices it gets hard fast.

pastel echo
#

Multiple devices?

#

keyboard /mouse and controller?

gentle coral
#

I also have a few macro keypads, and have access to hotas, racing wheel, touchscreen, keyboard, and a few other things sometimes.

pastel echo
#

now that you mention it I had those problems too I remember how I solved em though it is dusty

#

Big screen just crashed my computer haha

#

Anyway I have my keybinds and logitech gaming software open on a second monitor and displayed in the virtual space if I look to my left

#

But yeah I agree with you, some sort of visual representation that isn't aids like that would be really good

gentle coral
#

Also i have to think of solutions that work for a majority of users. And touch typing is not something most people are very good at.

pastel echo
#

That's why I didn't even think of it, also children use vr too so they would be at a disadvantage

#

Elon needs to finish neuro link so I can get an oculus mod for it haha

gentle coral
#

Logitec was going to make a steam vr tracked keyboard but i dont think it ever was released

pastel echo
#

Oh haha 😂 big screen didn't crash my computer

#

It was discord somehow

gentle coral
#

That was in 2017, and would use partial pass-through to show where your hands are (but render everythingin simplified geometry). As full pass-through looks terrible.

pastel echo
#

mannn I am excited for Quest 2

#

I have to wait till probably January to use mine

gentle coral
#

WMR, and steamvr eally needs to catch up if they want to be competitive (and considering how much windows is trying to improve ar and vr support in windows I will be sad if their version of this is not being fast tracked).

I also think steam needs a controlled passthrough mode soon, but don't know when that would come out.

#

What i will probably try to make is a passthrough volume, where only the area i designate will show pass through, while everything else is still in the virtual world.

pastel echo
#

Off topic

gentle coral
#

I also want to make some steamvr tracked accessories for my vr spaces. Things like -
chair
Cupholder
Desk
Keyboard

pastel echo
#

I have a facebook account I made a lot time ago with my real name, I since changed the listed name to a fake name, and I linked that facebook account to my Oculus account back in January or so

#

I'm wondering if I have to change my listed name to my real name or if it's working on my Rift CV1 will it probably be fine on my Quest 2 as well

#

Got any ideas? I don't know if they specifically double check people when they turn on their Quest 2 or if since I'm already merged I'll be fine

gentle coral
#

I am not sure what to expect, i have heard stories of it being fine, and stories of people being banned.

Since you already merged it, and it originally had your real name it might be fine, but i would check with others to be safe.

pastel echo
#

Aw see that is what I've done here, I'll probably ask again tomorrow when more active

#

I just don't want people I actually know to look me up and find me on facebook, if they do that Facebook will be able to make the connection to who I know in real life again

#

They haven't had accurate data on that since 2014

#

I really like the idea of VR tracked spaces, I get really worried about spilling my waterbottle when I'm using desk experience VR

gentle coral
#

I havent logged into my oculus account since February when i last did a gametesting livestream for a Friend. I have yet to see exactly what has changed in regards to accounts that were already connected.

#

@pastel echo The cupholder idea actually came from valve and the company that makes the steamvr tracking parts

thick nest
#

i would do this all the time

#

i would watch class game with my friends video chat with people

#

it would be sick

#

@pastel echo why are you gonna have to wait till january

#

and i would recommend sticking with your real name in facebook

#

and setting the can other vr users and friends see my facebook real name

#

i did that

pastel echo
#

Well I changed the listed name back in 2015 or maybe it was 2013 and the url for my account is still my real name and due to me having a very unique name I am the only one you can find via search

thick nest
#

soo

#

no one would be able to see your name anyways if you had that option on

pastel echo
#

People in real life would be able to look me up on facebook .com

thick nest
#

what would that change

pastel echo
#

It would change people in real life's ability to look me up on facebook .com

#

I have a very unique name and I do not want that

thick nest
#

if people know you in real life

#

wouldnt it be normal if they had your facebook

pastel echo
#

I do not want people to have my facebook I do not use my facebook

thick nest
#

so what

#

if they have it

#

they cant get data off you

pastel echo
#

I have accepted being a data identity to be sold and traded between companies but there is no connection to me in real life as it stands. The only thing you could hope to find is an archived newspaper clipping from 2006 and that's with specific keywords

#

If real people start looking around and easily finding me online those lines will be blurred and I don't really want that

thick nest
#

make a new account

#

and set everything from a random name

#

to a random date of birth

#

to a random pfp

#

but make it look real

pastel echo
#

That would be foolish because if facebook asks for your Drivers license you are dead in the water

thick nest
#

like if your age is 30 and your picture is a kid

#

what

pastel echo
#

and besides my oculus and facebook are already linked

thick nest
#

do they actually do that

pastel echo
#

yes

thick nest
#

wow

#

all of that for an account

pastel echo
#

I do not know other countries but here in the U.S. they can

#

Apps like Uber and Bird Scooters can do it too

thick nest
#

big ooff

#

umm but i still dont understand something

#

how would people from vr get your identity if your username is not the one you used from your account

pastel echo
#

I don't care about the VR people haha they do not matter to me

#

I care about people who know me in real life looking for me and finding me and building a web of connections that ties to real life me

#

as it stands there is no way for someone to do that because I cannot be found online unless you already know how to find me

thick nest
#

so its bascially if someones gets your name irl and searched around on facebook and got stuff from you

#

oh ok

pastel echo
#

Basically yes, it would let facebook build my social connections profile and now be able to give that info to others and build it larger

thick nest
#

cant you hide your posts from people other than your friends

#

just do that

#

and hide your pfp and profile bar

#

make it where only your friends can see it

#

im pretty sure facebook has a setting for that

pastel echo
#

Yeah I could and it's what I will do if I have to change my listed name

#

I just want to minimize people in life finding my presence online

thick nest
#

ok

#

i hope that helps

#

bc other than that idk what other options you have

pastel echo
#

Not get quest 2 lol

#

but I think I've accepted that where my life is headed now a data overhead wont affect me

thick nest
#

me too

pastel echo
#

but your younger years are when it matters most to secure your data because who knows where you'll be going in life

#

that's why I didn't even allow people to take photos of me until I was around 17 or 18

thick nest
#

i can feel less social anxiety before i join publics

#

now

#

why the heck is usps status soo useless

#

it gave me the same status "IN TRANSIT "

#

like if its still in transit dont update it

pastel echo
#

also to answer your earlier question, I can't use it til January because I am traveling / moving this december and shipping delays made it only possible to have it shipped to family near where I am moving so when I visit them I will get it for christmas, and then family will keep me occupied until probably January

thick nest
#

oh that sucks

#

not the moving and stuff

#

waititng

pastel echo
#

I have a rift and I hate VR so it's not that difficult haha

gentle coral
#

It is hard to keeo a small presence online, I have a unique name as well and my extended family is well known so i have no chance of having a small online presence, and now that i do a lot of activism, journalism, education and other stuff, I switched from minimizing my name, to controlling it and exactly how I'm seen online.

Once i start doing more biodata and neurodata related VR stuff i will really need to lock down what data websites, games, and apps get from me. Especially since i participate in scientific VR, and gaming studies.

thick nest
#

yeah me too

pastel echo
thick nest
#

once i started publishing apps/games

pastel echo
#

I only want my name associated with good things and positive stuff, nothing from my youth which is why despite how stupid I was I am glad I understood that haha

thick nest
#

lol

pastel echo
#

I hope quest 2 will make it easier for me to enjoy VR though. My problem is that whenever I think about VR I get this weird nausea behind my eyes that makes me never want to wear my headset

#

This is probably a result of ignoring VR sickness when I first got my rift for way longer than I should have while playing games like Blade and Sorcery / Beat Saber/ and Gorn

#

now I know how I should have trained my brain to build up it's VR tolerance but it is much more difficult now because I must also untrain my brains feelings towards VR

#

@gentle coral have you any thoughts on this given your more scientific looking into VR? tips and tricks you could say lol

thick nest
#

well shit my headphones which are white stopped making sound from the left ear

#

so i cant hear anything from my left ear

pastel echo
#

oh damn

thick nest
#

it lived wayyy more than i though

#

3x my expectations

pastel echo
#

probably a cable issue I tied the cable of my old headset into a knot and got an extra 2 months out of it

thick nest
#

mine are wireless

#

and i tried wired

pastel echo
#

Probably a wireless cable issue, I've tied the wifi bands of my old headset into a knot and got an extra 2Ghz out of it

thick nest
#

and my cable is perfectly fine

pastel echo
#

I got a free bluetooth / aux headset from this company on amazon last night so I'm gonna try that with the quest 2 and hope it will be good enough

thick nest
#

im not sure how those connect

#

i've always wondered

#

how do they choose a device

#

does the device have to be the only On bluetooth device in range??

pastel echo
#

because I just tried headset + rift and it was an instant upgrade over any form of ear thingies like these I've used before

#

it'll usually have a priority order based off the order it's been paired to things in my experience

#

ok

pastel echo

but if another device sends a connection request it will just switch to that

unless you have a device that states otherwise

so it might suck

gentle coral
# pastel echo <@!217881989343215627> have you any thoughts on this given your more scientific...

There are a lot of effects of vr in terms of perception that are not all that well understood yet, but I have heard of similar issues in many VR users. It might be a conditioned response that you are having where because of you previously getting sick in vr but not leaving, your mind started to associate the feelibg with vr enough that you feel it outside of vr when you think about it. This is probably also affected by the way are brain switches its perception about things while we are in VR (enough that us can somewhat be considered in the same vein of cognitive shift that some drugs give). When you go in VR enough your mind percieves as a different true reality, and your mind and senses change to accommodate that to some degree.

A lot of what i just said has not been scientifically tested yet, as it is only this past year that doing brain imaging while people are in VR actually really got to the point that it is usable for research. But a lot if the neurotech people I work with agree with aspects of the statement above and that at least in theory, everything above is possible.

pastel echo
#

Mannn it sounds pretty accurate though because this eye nausea is pretty much what I feel right before the VR sickness hits

#

It's like my brain is sending off the warning signal that I'm about to get VR sickness, which I've experienced bad enough to not leave bed the entire next day

#

I guess I'll have to just keep slowly retraining my brain to like VR again

#

maybe I'll eat my favorite choclate or something whenever I play VR lol

gentle coral
#

You might want to try recondition how you view VR so that you go into VR with a different mental state. Maybe doing things in VR that dont cause much motion sickness might help, so that you can get used to the perception while in there. Meditation, watching movies, playing slower VR games, doing art in VR.

Also making sure you are hydrated, and not hungry, as even more then regular gaming, it is hard to take breaks sometimes while in VR.

pastel echo
#

I've been trying to do that with Big Screen recently

#

Rift has bad resolution though so I can't read any text makes it harder

gentle coral
#

Yep reading in vr is annoying

pastel echo
#

I'm gonna buy superhot VR when I gues the Quest 2 and I'll have a pretty busy work schedule the couple first months after I get it where I wont have a lot of time to play things

#

I may use that time to rebuild my VR stamina

#

I've already beat Superhot VR before promptly returning it on steam so I remember it not being too hard on the brain and it's a game I can easily quit after 5 minutes without feeling too bad

thick nest
#

i dont know why but last time i played super hot was on the switch

gentle coral
#

Even with the G2, text often still looks fuzzy (when it isn't scalable vector text).

thick nest
#

i saw walkthroughs and the levels werent the same at all

pastel echo
#

Blade and Sorcery on the other hand, oh man that probably hasn't helped that whenever I get really in the mood for VR I play blade and sorcery for like 3 hours and typically get a little sick

thick nest
#

nintendo switch's version was wayy shorter too

pastel echo
#

I was annoyed at how short Superhot VR was. as a Quest game I kinda get it because I'll be using it to showcase VR for people who haven't used it before. but after beating it in under 30 on steam I was proper annoyed

gentle coral
#

I like superhot vr for the harder difficulty modes (endless, headshot only, time attack)

#

Getting good scores on those modes is quite hard depending on the level.

pastel echo
#

That's fair, I don't really enjoy shooters I prefer stuff with physics like Blade and Sorcery so maybe that's why I couldn't vibe with it

#

also I really enjoyed Superhot the original

thick nest
#

yeah i feel like playing with physics is really sick

#

and fun

gentle coral
#

If they fixed the throwing mechanics in superhot vr i would enjoy it even more.

pastel echo
#

my first play though of Superhot I challenged myself to never fire a gun and it wasn't until I beat the game that I learned there is a challenge mode after you beat the game where you play the campaign without being able to fire guns 😐

thick nest
#

and one of the games im excited to try out on q2 is that hand tracking physics game

#

i feel like those are really cool

#

and they shouldnt be paid

#

since its super easy to finish the whole thing in 2 mins

pastel echo
#

My next headset in 2021 will probably be an index and when that time comes I hope the finger tracking will be good and epic

#

like in games that I enjoy

#

I know it's not the same as the Quest 2 thing I just thought of it because fingers

thick nest
#

at that time i think an index 2 or another major vr headset would have released hopefully

#

i gtg now see ya guys later

pastel echo
#

Peace out

#

I don't really see how the quest 2 hand tracking will be useful other than maybe in media apps

gentle coral
#

Hand tracking is fun, but a lot of people think it will be a lot better then it can be at this point, as without haptic gloves, most UI is downright annoying. Though hand gestures is so much fun in a few demos i have tried.

#

This is a similar reason to why keyboards havent been replaced with screens on laptops, and that it tactility.

pastel echo
#

oh man I couldn't even imagine trying to type on a touch screen laptop

#

maybe have a rubber or whatever material layer on top though to give the feeling of making contact with a distinct key and you'd have me convinced though

#

I'd definitely lose a few dozen words per minute but have a dual screen touchscreen device may be worth it

gentle coral
#

Yep some people have doen the rubber cover idea, and it does work, but can be annoying to take off every time you want to use the second screen. An idwa that has been floating around has been to put tiny actuators behind the screen to raise it up in little bumps where the keys would be so that there is some decent variability in the touch surface.

#

But when your hands are in the air, clickimg on things is much harder.

thick nest
#

some give you haptic feedback

#

but they still suck

#

though hand tracking was added by an update for the quest 1

#

so its bascially free

#

i wanna see it where if you play vrc on q2 it can track your hands and use controller input

#

at the same time

#

that would be cool

gloomy crater
#

In my eyes, VR will never be as good with hand tracking as it is with controllers. Partially because of that tactility thing, and partially because I don't see hand tracking ever getting as reliable as I would need it to be for me to be willing to use it over controllers

thick nest
#

index knuckles be like
am i a joke to you

gloomy crater
#

Like, comparing WMR tracking to base station tracking. There isn't really a way to base station track my fingies

thick nest
#

well isnt that how the controllers on the quest 2 are tracked

gloomy crater
#

Oh yeah. Speaking of knuckles. I got my index lenses yesterday and the only thing that isn't tanked in resolution bc of my GPU is the SteamVR menus so the games still look bad but I can see my controllers in the 3D environment amazingly now

thick nest
#

bc they get tracked by lights

#

rotational tracking is a bit harder

#

but they managed to get it from the help of AI

#

and i feel like as more companies do hand tracking it will get even better

umbral garden
#

The hand tracking on the quest 2 sucks absolute Dick

#

Well, the tracking itself isn’t terrible but there’s zero functionality for it, and the gestures are incredibly finnicky

haughty thistle
#

Also, the lack of feedback with the hand tracking on the Quest make it more of like a tech demo then anything really immersive...

carmine wharf
#

i mean how would they even provide any feedback though

haughty thistle
#

That's the problem with hand tracking if there's nothing strapped to your hand

thick nest
#

thats not oculus's fault

#

and did you guys see the videos

#

the camera can track your fingers by PICTURES

#

so really expecting index quality tracking isnt ideal here

#

i use the hand tracking sdk and there are multiple ways to give feedback like a controller

#

from gestures and such

modest heart
#

hey guys, i have had an oculus quest (1) for a few months. i recently got a job ,i am 16 btw, and i was thinking of maybe saving up for the valve index (will take some months) but what is you guys' view on that?

haughty thistle
#

The Index is like the best VR headset you can get right now. If you do intend on playing a lot of VR in your free time, the Index is the best choice you can make

#

There are headsets that beat out the Index in one point or another, but what all these headsets have in common is that they have compromises. Take the PiMax headsets for example: Way higher FOV, but they generally come with rubber straps, the included audio is way worse if included at all and the lenses cause massive distortions...

modest heart
#

yeah i plan to play a lot when i get an index since the quality is so much smoother

sullen linden
#

index is the best all around one i'd say

modest heart
#

with the quest i feel like im using a cardboard vr with an 2008 android phone in it

#

sometimes*

sullen linden
#

i like how the index is back compat with the vive stuff

odd pivot
#

I personally would just wait a year or two the VR market will change a ton and pcvr headsets should be way cheaper and better than the index

modest heart
#

idk what else i should do with my money (if i wont get fired cus im ass at the job)

#

i could save up but i dont like to leave my money with the bank since corona is pretty much fucking everything up

#

and idk what i should save up for too lol

odd pivot
#

I’m so confused at the problem here

#

Put money in bank

#

Done

modest heart
#

ye i know

haughty thistle
#

Not always is saving up money worth it. Many banks now take fees for putting down large sums of money. In such a case, it is much wiser to just invest in stuff...

#

I don't see a PCVR headset better then the Index rolling around anytime in the next 2 years at least. The Index Controllers will probably stay the gold standard for even longer, until either a cheap VR glove get's released (which I think is way further away then some might belive), or Valve follows up with a newer variant. The Pimax sword controllers are either on-hold indefinetly, and the Etee Controller is missing face buttons and is thus not really competition to the Index controller...

modest heart
#

thats exactly why i dont wanna save up

#

especially now

haughty thistle
#

The Reverb G2 improves on the Index in the areas that count the most for VR sceptics: price and SDE. But for VR enthusiasts, it cuts the wrong corners like the Tracking, Controllers and Refreshrate. Personally, I'd love to see more companies focusing on refreshrate, and I'm not talking about PiMax's half-assed solutions just so they can advertise "best headset" (which it really isn't)

#

If you want the best VR experience for the foreseeable future, the Index is the way to go. Maybe even go with a pair of Index controllers, lighthouses and a Reverb G2 headset if you really have money to burn. But waiting for a better headset to come around is like waiting for the next GPU generation a few months after the last GPUs of the current generation have dropped...

modest heart
#

alright then i can save up for a better one ye

haughty thistle
#

What I want to say is, unless the current products are already reaching the end of their lifecycle, waiting for the next products to come only really is worth it, if you have to save up until then anyways...

#

Like that "Fastest Gaming PC for now" video Linus made recently with a 10900k and 3090. It's processor might've been dethroned, but at the time of release of that CPU, the 5900X was nowhere to be seen...

sullen linden
#

I have a problem

#

I have lags ca all 2 seconds but it’s not be my gpu is overworked or sth it doesn’t matter what resolution i let it render even if I put it on 800 p or 4K it’s always the same ( I am running virtual desktop over my oculus ) what is the problem?

pastel echo
# modest heart alright then i can save up for a better one ye

Measure your cost per year of the device you own. If you are going to spend the money because saving with your bank options nets you a loss either because your banks are bad or aren't insured and spending the money will work better for you (at 16 it's not the end of the world to spend $1000 if you have money for college or whatever anyway). Then you should see the purchase as an investment in entertainment. If you think that the specs and capabilities of the index will last you long enough to be happy with how much you paid for each year you own it then go for it. If you think you'd only be happy for a year then wait. If you think the Index as it stands would last you 4 years then might as well get it.

#

I got a Rift CV1 in January of 2019 because I felt it would last me at least 2 years netting me $200 per year and that $200 per year allowed me access to Blade and Sorcery / Gorn / Beat Saber. Which alongside free options I've spent 100 hours per year in VR (on the safe side).

#

Meaning with price of games I've spent probably around $2.3 per hour of entertainment in VR

#

That's cheaper than some of the AAA titles came out would have netted me, cheaper than seeing movies I might of paid for otherwise, and cheaper than other forms of entertainment such as gambling I've partaken in before as well

#

If you view your big purchases in this manner it's easier to ascertain whether the cost is worth it or not

# jolly geode can the Oculus Rift S be used while wearing glasses?

The Rift S has a button on the bottom to slide the headset forward and back. It's more meant to adjust the headset for different headshapes, but I used it to fit my glasses just fine. Just let there be known that if you slide out the headset a lot, that at some point it won't be properly stabilised on your face anymore meaning more light leakage as well as the headset might wobble in-front of your face (not a great experience; and I had that happen to me)

it might be because the 3060 ti is a new card

#

@stiff lantern download the file in the link

i think the problem is probably your graphics card not having up to date drivers

#

so oculus doesnt understand which gpu your using

gentle coral
#

Both oculus and the graphics cards currently coming out are having driver updates released very often, make sure both oculus and your graphics drivers are up to date.

#

USB to sata is a very common cable for anyone who has ever swapped hard drives or ssd's in a laptop. Our uses an external 3.5 inch hard drive hot swap system. USB to nvme is also common for the same reason.

Any external hard drives or SSD's use that conversion somewhere in their system.

thick nest
#

damn

gentle coral

I would never recommend running anything too intensive off of a external SSD or hard drive, but using a high end external ssd for a game library if you travel a lot or have multiple gaming computers is a great idea.

quest 2 would be the good headset for the budget

#

and connecting it through link to work as a pcvr headset

#

right now its better than the rift s in pcvr

#

and it can do standalone vr

#

for the quest 2 you need fps over 120

#

the 3080 can do that very easily

haughty thistle
#

Well... FPS are a thing in VR, but the more important measure is Frametimes, which is not the same. You want a consistent Frametime for the experience to be good

thick nest

well he wont have trash frame times if he is gonna be running on a 3080 system

harsh niche
#

just buffer room?

#

headroom? can’t remember the term lol

haughty thistle

Headroom is the term

#

The Quest 2 is very CPU heavy due to the compression that needs to happen. If you have a budget gaming Rig, I'd advise against the Q2, and would suggest to go for an older WMR headset as they're way easier to run (even if you have to grab the used)

Just played a few hours of cyberpunk 2077 and I really wish it had a vr mode.

But it is very hard to run, and would never be playable in VR without a 3080, RX 6900XT, or 3090. My overclocked 1070 maxQ gets 45 fps at low settings in everything.

#

I can actually turn up settings quite a bit without it going to much lower, but I really would like 60fps consistently.

#

But the game is almost made for VR in terms of its design.

thick nest
gentle coral
#

Just was looking into the Nvidia VRworks to see if there have been any decent updates, but they haven't uploaded any of the GTC 2020 talks yet. But I found a good one from 2019 that shows how with a combination of NVlink SLI, and quadro sync II cards you could scale up to 4 cards very well. And with the power behind stuff like the Quadro A40, I think it might be possible to run some of the crazier headsets coming out. I just need to check if I can get it to work ontop of steamvr. I am guessing I will only get it working in my own games and experiences, but maybe I can make a pre-configured unity project for people who want to try adding those features. Though I don't know how much longer VR SLI will be a thing, and if regular quadro sync would be a good replacement. Also with foveated rendering I am not sure how nessasary it will be.

Though considering my goal by 2025 is at least 4k per eye at 200hz with full Raytracing and HDR, in a game that looks as good as cyberpunk 2077 does, I am guessing that I will need everything available.

Figured out that its finicky to restarts even after switching to a different port, so I had to uninstall all the USB related software on my computer, shut it down, plug the headset into an appropriate port without extensions (my card only has a single hdmi port, and I have an HTC Vive so it uses hdmi although it wasnt as finicky using my 1660 which allowed me to be able to use the headset through the extension) unplugged the USB connector, turned it on, boot and plugged the USB back in to reinstall software, then run steam vr @umbral garden

Right now I'm running at 80hz with 70% render resolution, but once I get my new GPU I plan on going for a better visual experience. What I'm wondering is: are the refresh rate and render resolution the only things I can change with regards to the visuals of the games I play?

Since you can do some pretty advanced scripting in worlds, ofc there are game worlds

So I guess to reiterate my previous question in a more concise method: If I wanna get the best visual experience out of my index, do I have to worry about anything other than render resolution scale and refresh rate, like what I had to do with the quest?

haughty thistle
#

One thing not many people talk about is, that if you have the headset setup wrong (not sitting on your face properly), you might get a sub-par experience

gloomy crater
#

yeah, I had to explain that to my sister when she got her quest 2. She didn't take the time to dial in her IPD, and she didn't adjust the top strap at all, so the headset was hanging halfway down her face. With the index, I find it sits on my head and face much more comfortably than my quest 1 did.

haughty thistle
#

My recommendation on how to set it up the easiest way:

  1. pull the top strap to be set as wide as possible
  2. pull the back strap over the back of your head so that it sits slightly tighter then perfectly comfortable, not too tight, but also not loose either
  3. pull the top strap to be as tight as possible (it should carry the majority of the weight)
  4. open the back strap one or too notches to ensure perfect comfort, as well as proper sit
#

One thing I for example did wrong, is I had the headstrap (the one that cups the back of my head) as tightly as possible (basically pressing the face foam to be as squeezed as possible). It not only wasn't as comfortable, but I also noticed later that there were more godrays and internal reflections noticeable with the headstrap setup in the wrong way

harsh niche

actually a good question about the visual settings

#

in the oculus debug tool you can change a ton of things, one of the ones I like is the distortion curvature

#

when reading thing I don't like having to move my head constantly, but I have to because if I move my eyes too far out of the center then it gets blurry, and changing that setting helps

#

idk how to change it in steamvr though, maybe there's a tool somewhere or the OVR addon thing can do it

the vive cosmos is overpriced but it's the only headset that you can do wireless PCVR quality gameplay with. If you're going value oriented, or just straight up aren't planning on dropping the $300 on the wireless module, you'd be better off with a regular old vive

The vive pro and vive pro eye can also use the wireless adapter, and the vive pro is more comfortable in my opinion even though the Vive Cosmos is slightly higher resolution. Also you want to get the vive cosmos elite as the inside out tracking of the original vive cosmos is pretty bad. Also the vive pro and vive pro eye use the steamvr 2.0 lighthouses, while the vive cosmos elite comes with the 1.0 lighthouses, but supports the 2.0 lighthouses

I may have to try the VRO then. I’m going to try playing without glasses for a bit, but my eyes might be just barely bad enough to warrant getting the lenses.

haughty thistle
#

Widmo is just plainly using cheap stuff to make expensive stuff. In my experience, I got a lower FOV on Widmo lens inserts then with the VRO lenses on my Index. Besides that, VRO just plainly uses higher quality lenses and inserts. I'd highly recommend them over any other lens insert company

haughty thistle
# harsh niche idk how to change it in steamvr though, maybe there's a tool somewhere or the OV...

SteamVR doesn't have an equivalent to the Distortion curvature. It's afaik a Quest Link only feature, where parts of the image are encoded in a lower res then other parts of the screen. That's that blurriness that you are experiencing. Adjusting that in the Oculus Debug Tool, will affect all applications you're running through your Quest (unless Facebook is a d* and changed it so that it only affects Oculus Store games now)

#

Basically, if you had any other headset, like the Vive or an Index, you won't have that problem. That's also why SteamVR doesn't have an adjustment for that

harsh niche
#

really? only oculus headsets do that? I thought they all did to get more frames or something

kindred parcel
haughty thistle
#

Besides that, SteamVR and WMR use a different technique to improve frames: by simply not rendering to parts of the screen that aren't visible. I honestly don't know why Facebook isn't doing this, but it is how it is I guess...

#

The rendering mask technique of WMR and SteamVR require the system to know what parts are visible through the lens and which aren't. Since Oculus doesn't have these masks, it renders to the whole screen on these headsets

Still deciding between a pimax Vision 8K plus or a vive pro. What do you guys think?

haughty thistle
#

The Vive Pro has better built-in audio, doesn't have noticeable lens distortion, does have OLED screens, is easier to run and actually renders at native resolution. Plus the Vive Pro has support for the Vive Wireless adapter, and is one of the few remaining selling points for the Vive Pro
The PiMax headset on the other hand has less noticable SDE, a bigger FOV (although at the cost of heavy lens distortion) and has an experimental 110Hz mode (although that probably will reduce the FOV to something similar as the Vive Pro)

All things considered, I'd go for the Vive Pro, just because of the fact that it doesn't have lens distortions like pretty much all PiMax headsets have, and the fact that HTC at least has native speaking support (unlike PiMax with their all-Chinese support)

#

Remember that the PiMax 8k and 8k Plus both render at 1440p and then upscale to 4k. To get the headset render at native resolution, you'd have to get the 8k X

#

And lastly: if you're thinking about the Vive Pro, the Index is not far off. Pretty similar price, but pretty much better in all regards (even better audio, 144Hz support, lower SDE at same render resolution, higher FOV and similarly if not better comfort)

#

Trust me, the wait for the Index over the Vive Pro is worth it, just because of the Controllers alone

haughty thistle
#

Here's the thing tho: Index's breaking were a massive issue, but aren't anymore.
Quest 2 owners getting banned for not using their Facebook accounts is also getting massively reported, even till this day

#

Really, with pretty much all issues that remain on the Index, if you know how to avoide them, you'll pretty much never run into them. And even if you do, Steam Support is happy to help out.
With Oculus/Facebook however, some issues just are out of your hand, and both Facebook and Oculus Support are not very helpful.

The other three people made a facebook account specifically to play the quest 2, but all three had to return their headsets because their facebook accounts were banned within hours of making them.

#

On day one it would have been closer to 1 out of 100, considering the number of headsets that were activated on day one vs the number of bans. And now after more the a month it should be way less the 1 in 10,000 but no matter how rare it is, the problem is that it happens at all with no resource available. If you buy perfectly working hardware and attach an oculus account that has 500 dollars in games on it, and it gets banned, you will now have a bricked headset, and loose 500 dollars in games. And the recourse is to give facebook your real ID, and then you might have a chance of getting it back. But if that doesn't work, then there is no other way to get your account reinstated.

The Quest 2 is almost the perfect consumer headset, but has a few stupid flaws that make it a headset i can only barely recommend to people.

I remember thinking about getting a CV1 back in 2018 when I was still on my Lenovo headset. It was either the CV1 or the Vive as the Lenovo started to scratch my glasses. like the cv1

#

but i got to say

#

the cv1 has gotta be the best vr headset in its price for pcvr

#

there is just one thing

#

the resolution

#

ofc its a bit old that explains why they didnt go 1440p or smth like that

haughty thistle
#

The CV1 not just has the screen issue. The cable is a copper one as far as I can tell, and the ones especially on older CV1s are breaking. You can't get them new, so every CV1 is basically a ticking time bomb. Just a matter of time before it's for the landfill

still tho

180 dollars

its actually insane

Imagine a Rift CV2. Outside-In Tracking with IR-Cameras, Passthrough cameras, The awesome CV1 controllers, same good speakers as the CV1, Verifocal displays, 2160x2160 OLED. Basically a dream if it was for the price of the G2...

odd pivot
#

Just buy a g2?

#

I hate the controllers though

#

On the g2

#

Ummmm are you writing an essay

pastel echo
#

The rift's cable issue is another reason I'm glad I sold mine, I should have got a Rift S instead of a Quest 2 probably but the Rift S came iwth it's own issues and I don't have display port 🤷‍♂️ but man if my girlfriend gets into VR I'm gonna have her get a Rift S if possible

haughty thistle
#

Well, the G2 controllers are kinda crap, at least for social VR games. OLED Screens have issues with the subpixel arrangement, but the contrast is much, much better over an LCD, Verifocal Displays we haven't really seen yet, but from the Demos I've heard about it seems like really cool tech, and will probably be a must-have at some point, and lastly, Outside-In will always beat Inside-Out. Mostly because of the advantage an external sensor has over an internal one has...

#

And while I'm talking like this is some sort of dream headset (well the 2160x2160 OLED screens are actually), many of these things Facebook has shown off in a prototype before. They just never ended up making a final product out of it...

haughty thistle
#

Like I said, I don't think device-less hand tracking will be the future, you're missing any sort of feedback...

kindred parcel
#

Gloves are the future haha

#

They honestly seem really cool from what I’ve seen

haughty thistle
#

At this point I still believe that dedicated controllers will stay around for a while, as depending on the game, different input methods might be better over others. Like how a Steering Wheel will always be better at racing games then a keyboard, yet for many other games a Keyboard is basically irreplaceable...

kindred parcel
#

True

#

I get my rift s back tomorrow and I’m hyped to play

#

Just worried about how the vision will be with no glasses

haughty thistle
#

Once we have gloves that can use haptic to basically emulate buttons on a controller,I think that's when dedicated controllers will finally only be a second choice. But that'll take years. With out current technology we can barely simulate te touch of an object, but no texture or similar. Mostly larger objects is what current gloves can display...

# kindred parcel Just worried about how the vision will be with no glasses

Basically, if you can read smaller text at about 2m away, you should be fine. But in case you don't you can push the main headset unit away from your face to fit your glasses. the Rift S has much more adjustment range then like the Quest or Quest 2, so you should be golden. In terms of glasses support the Rift S is pretty similar to the Index I noticed...

kindred parcel
#

That’s the only issue though

#

I had to send mine in for replacement because my glasses scratched the lens

#

Even though it was in the the farthest possible position away from them

#

So I’m thinking of getting prescription lenses for it later.

haughty thistle
#

Basically, you have to adjust your headset so that you can wiggle your glasses back and forth with the headset fully on

#

Hmm...

#

That sounds weird... My glasses are actually pretty large, and I had 0 issues fitting my glasses. They're not big in the sens of wide or high, but they sit quite far away from my eyes, so I always had problems fitting them in headsets even ones with glasses adjustments like the OG Quest

#

I got a Quest 2, super fun way to exercise and game at the same time

kindred parcel
#

Well my rims are flat right against the glass, so maybe they just don’t provide the right protection ?

#

I just don’t want to scratch the lens again. I got lucky and told them it was a smudge under the lens, and they believed me I guess

#

That’s what I thought it was at first until I realized my glasses were scratched in the same spot as the “smudge”

haughty thistle
#

Well, my glasses are frameless, so there's no real protrusion to speak of on mine either

gloomy crater
#

My glasses frames are wider than the entirety of my head, so I've never been able to fit them into a headset before

#

I expected this and I'm super interested in how it would play out

#

I'm pretty sure Facebook planned on this and it's interesting how they sold out their Quest 2 stock right around holiday time, a lot of users will go active around christmas and they'll get a lot of data before they might potentially have to remove facebook integration

odd pivot
#

I agree

pastel echo
#

How much you wanna bet they wont have to remove already linked accounts

odd pivot
#

Oh damn

#

Mine is linked

pastel echo
#

Yep and I'd take a guess there wont be any process or if there is it'd be rather garbage to unlink that

odd pivot
#

Hm

pastel echo
#

Guess we'll just see how it turns out, I'm going into a field where they can have my data it wont matter at all so I already linked mine for Oculus social features

#

Hopefully by 2023 though the average person can have a VR headset without signing away their wallet or life

odd pivot
#

Yep

#

Headsets are reasonably priced right now

haughty thistle
#

I don't think Oculus will die due to this. A seperation from Facebook will in no-doubt benefit the VR market, but will also probably mean that VR will begin to be more expensive probably...

#

It's just the cold hard reality: Sell your Soul by letting yourself get data mined, or pay more for something cbWhatever

#

Oh sweet, they told me not to turn in my cable when I sent my headset in for RMA, and the new one came with a cable. So now I have two!

#

So that’s $80 saved if the cable ever dies on me

regal breach
#

wait, they come with an Oculus Link cable now??

kindred parcel
#

Oh should have mentioned it’s a Rift S

#

My bad

haughty thistle
#

Rift S cables are worth more the 80$ I think. Last time I checked Oculus asked 120€ over here for a brand new Rift S cable (back when they were still selling them)

gentle coral
#

If oculus does split from Facebook I know a ton of people who will rush back to work on new headsets and hopefully release the Rift 2 that was in the works until Facebook killed it and then had the original team leave. I might actually apply for a job there if they leave Facebook. Though it depends on who is running Oculus and if they care about personal privacy.

#

Also for everyone asking about hand tracking gloves and hand tracking in general, I have to agree with @haughty thistle that it is currently not the game changer that most people think it is. Most object interactions and quick precise actions need some form of physical feedback.

Over the years I have tried almost every optical and glove based hand tracking device, and have worked on a few as well, and every single one has flaws (to big, not accurate, bad haptics, uncomfortable, expensive, hard to program).

I could go into a lot of details about all the issues and what can solve them, but I would rather give a short version about what would be critical for a good system.

  1. The finger positioning and hand shape needs to be tracked well, to allow for accurate hapics to be triggered by games.

  2. The finger position and hand shape can't be tracked by the gloves as that adds a lot of bulk to the gloves.

3.A bracelet for position of the hands in real space tracked by cameras OR low drift IMU is a good option.

  1. On glove haptics should not be motor based. Piezoelectric, memory wire, acoustic, microfluidics, and muscle stimulation are all better options.

  2. Fabric parts of Gloves must be breathable and stretchy, and can be separated for cleaning.

  3. Tracking must be able to predict hands when one is occluded by the other.

  4. Sensor fusion should be used to lower the processing needed by camera algorithms (cameras only process part of frame where the hand is).

  5. Must not be to expensive (200 dollars Max).

  6. If possible make it have versions for all common headset tracking options.

  7. Glove must be able to be used with regular VR controllers without being taken off.

#

Oh also a lot of this also applies to feet based systems as well. As shoes are a great platform for haptics and tracking as well. With accurate foot pressure maps and a combo of foot and ankle trackers you can do reverse kinematics of a big chunk of the legs more accurately then with an IMU or sensor based systems alone.

even if they split up

#

standalone vr has alot more features than pcvr so in my opinion if somebody gave me 1000 dollars to spend on a vr headset i would probably get a quest 2 anyways

#

i wouldnt go and buy an index

#

its just the features i need most

#

and steam vr's sdk isnt fun to play around with

#

i prefer oculus's one

#

i quit as soon as i tried the basic stuff

haughty thistle

I'd personally prefer PCVR with proper Outside-In Tracking any day over Standalone with Inside-Out any day

as i said i wouldnt

so thats just my opinion

although maybe there are some issues i dont know of on the q2

#

even though i watched every single youtube review on it lol

haughty thistle
#

Well, Inside-Out has a smaller Tracking Volume, is way less accurate and doesn't support full body, unless you want to track every piece of the body the same way as the headset...

well full body is bascially a vr chat add on
