2070, 5800x3D, quite a bit of RGB, running a 650 PSU with a fan that's starting to get a little wonky (bought it off a friend from their build they were upgrading), later this year if I upgrade GPU, what level PSU should I go with? 850 sounds good to me because it provides a bit of wiggle room

leaden gale
idle skiff
#

Idk how much RGB really effects things. Some people say it's basically no impact and some people will breathe down your shirt collar How much RGB? Can your PSU handle? Hmmm?

idle skiff

sly field
#

anyone know how to use pc part picker?

fossil frost
#

if you are genuinely looking at a PSU for how much RGB it can handle, you would probably be better off getting what it is you really want, and just buying the dick enhancement surgery

leaden gale
#

That's insanely misleading. Corsair isn't infallible, they make good shit and they make bad shit, just like every other manufacturer

idle skiff
#

Unless it's for a video

That's it. I'm buying the cheapest, highest power PSU on Alibaba

#

So Linus is now the infallible source for what PSUs you should use?

#

Then go exclusively buy Seasonic PRIME units

#

Or Corsair RMx units

native crag
idle skiff
#

if I'm trusting anyone on hard data for components as of now it's Gamers Nexus lol he doesn't care how you feel or who you're loyal to he can and will benchmark your wife

clever matrix
fossil frost
#

thats not what hes doing, hes saying that linus isnt the ONLY source.. and just because linus is paid to advertise seasonic, shouldnt mean that that is your only choice

idle skiff
#

"Gamers Nexus will benchmark your wife" merch when

native crag
leaden gale
#

"I had bad experience with brand once, therefore brand bad and no one should ever buy anything from them ever again"

#
  • said no reasonable consumer ever
fossil frost
#

so a single psu died for a single youtuber, and thats why you make your choices? seems like you have trouble thinking for yourself

leaden gale
#

That's like me saying "I had a bad experience with Corsair Vengeance LPX, therefore all their products are bad and you should never buy from them"

native crag
#

Corsair does make some good PSUs. But you do get what you pay for

fossil frost
#

i doubt it, because anybody who had actually used 1000s of psu's, wouldnt be in here asking about PSUs

idle skiff
#

until Labs is fully up and running I see LTT for my tech entertainment over hard data

It needs to be in that formal-package for me to take the data as THE data

fossil frost
#

ok fair enough, in what capacity have you used 1000s of psus?

idle skiff
#

ok one of you just ask Linus at LTX and we can settle it

leaden gale
#

Literally anyone can make that claim, why don't you back it up with a source?

#

Nice story, still don't feel inclined to believe you

idle skiff
#

I'm an award winning producer, former child actor, and McDonald's worker with a PhD in Archeology and I'm working on 3 Master's degrees in Dance

leaden gale
#

Nor do I care for your senseless generalizations because "I'm a technician"

native crag
#

It doesn't matter if he's a technician. The fact is vendors sub-contract out the design and manufacturing of PSUs. They can, and often do, undergo component substitution due to supply chain issues.

So when looking at PSU failures, it's not always about the design, but the batch run within a given year.

fossil frost
manic torrent
#

Vendors work with retailers

native crag
#

Dell is the perfect example. They sell you a product to perform, but they can use many different SSDs and PSUs. They're a JIT (Just In Time) delivery due to the nature of build to order of their business.

manic torrent
#

The retailer literally can't fix the problem. Don't get me wrong they are still culpable, but eh

leaden gale
#

I make one recommendation - one. I made it because it's a known good PSU model that's very well priced compared to some others right now. And that alone makes me biased?

native crag
#

Disclaimer, I've worked at Dell and refurbished many of their machines. It was a year job, hated it...

fossil frost
leaden gale
#

You injected yourself into the conversation, not with advice, but with two sweeping generalizations that no one asked for and are innacurate. When confronted, you simply wrote me off as "a toxic little boy", and continued to label me as "acting like a child." I've done no such thing towards you, and yet here we are.

manic torrent
#

@quick mica ... it's ok. You have intrinsic worth. You don't need to justify yourself like this

leaden gale
#

You didn't answer the question. You write off my recommendation as bad, then made a generalization that doesn't answer the question directly.

fossil frost
#

but you didnt answer the question, you just made a shitty comment about the previous recommendation... rather than giving any sort of constructive answer

manic torrent
#

The details don't really matter - you're picking a fight. I should know πŸ™‚

fossil frost

leaden gale

leaden gale

idle skiff

fossil frost

You bought a computer with windows 7....

native crag

@half elm First you download the WIndows 10 ISO. Then you open the ISO and copy all files and folders to a new folder at the root of your existing C drive. Say for example "C:\Windows_Install"

#

Then you run setup from C:\Windows_Install.

#

In theory, should do an in-place upgrade. I know factually it works updating an older build of Windows 10 to newer. So...should work from 7

Of course, back up your data first incase the upgrade process gets hosed

Now it's basically irrelevant if you're already on 20H2 as 22H2 "upgrades" as with any update. Prior to 20H2, it would be a full blow OS in-place upgrade which could take an hour or longer

Once an AMD Pro CPU fuse is blown, it's effectively married to that MB make/model, if not the vendor at the very least

I can't find anything on Lenovo vendor locking their memory to Lenovo motherboards on Google though

This whole Lenovo based PC is absolute shit, worst purchase of my computing career 0/10 don't recommend

native crag
#

Lenovo based PCs are fine for office use. But I would never own one as my daily PC at home.

That said, those Lenovo, HPE, or Dell Micro computers make for great bare metal Linux boxes

#

Purchased used / refurbished that is.

#

Better than a Raspberry Pi as you can have 16GB of RAM or greater (depending on SODIMM slot config). Plus the micro PCs are x86 and not ARM

ionic flame
#

I bought a new motherboard, because the Lenovo one doesn't have XMP profiles, or any overclocking capability. Also can't disable CSM.

Well wouldn't ya know, the Lenovo case is DESIGNED for the motherboard. You can't use another motherboard in that case. The damn thing isn't wired properly for it.

So I use my old case, with new motherboard, using the Lenovo RAM+CPU+GPU.

Well i'm 2 for 2 on getting bent over. The Lenovo ram doesn't work in a non-lenovo board. I get Q-Code 55 or something (Memory not detected)

#

Oh, and the backing plate for the AIO cooler is super glued to the MF motherboard.

Dell and HP do the same shit. They often use their own PSUs which are proprietary.

@ionic flame Though back to your original issue, you couldn't disable CSM on that Lenovo MB? That's crazy if true. Enabling Secure Boot should force to UEFI thus turning off CSM

ionic flame
#

You can't disable CSM... you disable Secure Boot & CSM turns on. You enable secure boot, and CSM turns off

native crag
#

Secure Boot and CSM are incompatible with each other. Can only choose or the other

ionic flame

If you want to run certain softwares that require Secure Boot being disabled. Then you ain't running them softwares

native crag

If you're running Windows 10 / 11 anyways, just leave Secure Boot on

ionic flame

Certain software meaning unsigned drivers for Windows 10

native crag
#

True, but that should be rare unless you've got some old hardware or program that has to be a driver running in kernel space, in which case the drivers need to be signed for Secure Boot

#

Windows 11 requires Secure Boot anyways, and Windows 10 will be EOLed on Oct 14, 2025.

So, I've just gotten a chance to sit in a Secret Labs chair for the first time. My office bought a bunch of them. Am I missing something? Why are these so popular? They're about as comfortable as an awkwardly shaped piece of wood.

I didn't look into the savings they might get from bulk buying these, but I know that bulk buying Steelcase chairs would put even the Gesture pretty close in price to this thing and that chair is WAY more comfortable.

I'm just speculating, to be clear

hearty nexus

Maybe. I've spent the majority of my life sitting in seats designed to be reasonably ergonomic.

simple quail

I have a couple of really nice office chairs, I got them from my grandma

Yep. I remember being shocked when my Steelcase showed up and I could barely lift it.

#

But it's built like a tank and has an awesome warranty so I know that there shouldn't be any issues with it for quite a while.

#

The combination of being an awkward shape, and weighing around 90 pounds makes it a pretty difficult thing to lift and move on your own.

my chair is somewhere in that ballpark as well

windows sucks, gonna go back to linux

#

I realized how bad installing frameworks is

hearty nexus
#

Because of how I needed to maneuver it when I got it, just going by the arms wasn't a viable option. I needed to basically lift it over my desk.

#

Ehh, Windows sucks for what you're trying to use it for. Might be better to use a VM with the least used option.

#

Or, if you went to Windows for gaming, run a Linux VM the majority of the time since there are a lot of games that don't play nice being a VM.

simple quail
#

I don't know if it's just luck (or because I don't really care about AAA games), but pretty much all of my games work on Linux

hearty nexus
#

Most of the games I've encountered that don't like being on a VM were MMOs.

#

Anti-cheat stuff and all that.

simple quail
#

none of my machines run Windows anymore, except for a couple of Windows XP machines, as it feels like the newer Windows versions don't give me the flexibility to fully optimise my workflow, like KDE Plasma and fish do

#

this is the reason I also use Linux at work

linux is great until it's incapable of playing an mp4 file natively

I tried it at some point like 4–5 years ago, but I have a copy of Minecraft which works just fine

native support for video seems like an important part of any operating system, but hey that's just my 2 cents

You play media, on a media player. Doesn't matter if its Android or macOS

fluid ridge

i guess you could say it's a feature

simple quail

you can choose whether you want to support video or not

I'm just confused what "play videos natively" means
