Hey guys, brand new to the channel so forgive me if this isn't the right place to ask. I recently revamped my old ASUS desktop and turned it into a NAS using TrueNAS Scale. It seems to be running okay and I have SMB sharing set up. Yesterday I installed a couple 8TB Seagate IronWolfs to have some actual storage (Rather than the 32GB thumb drive I was using to test) and now I'm in the process of transferring all of my data from a 4TB External drive to my server. The problem is that my transfer speeds are painfully slow, barely hitting 12MB/s. Is this normal or is there something that may be wrong that could increase my transfer speed?

Oddly, even though I'm connected over ethernet, it doesn't look like much data is being passed over it and most is being transferred over WiFi (?)

Windows defaults to wired over wireless. If you started the transfer on Wi-Fi and plugged in a wired cable, it will stick with Wi-Fi until the transfer completes. Otherwise, something is suspect with your wired connection. Try disabling Wi-Fi to force the wired connection, see what happens, then report back in #networking

Others had said in posts that deleting all HP pre-shoveled crap can cause BSOD these days

The problem is that I definitely enabled BSOD text twice: once when I stumbled upon the gpedit.msc option during my routine scanthrough on new windows and once when I went through all Aero Tweaker

I upgraded it legit from existing install. Other option I checked to see if it worked first if I ran install medium while win was running. Windows 11 2020 if you have newer (latest) version install disk, it says "keep all user files or nuke it; program files unavailable due to different version of win"

But the real reason is that I'd never in my life gotten a new HP lappy with Windows pre-installed and kept it without wiping haha. Had I known there would be such sadism from HP, I would have done just that

The Gutmann 36-pass wipe was never intended to be used like that. It was just a combination of all the other wipe-types. I just use an appropriate wipe in nwipe: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nwipe

Now, there ARE methods of scanning the areas between bits to try and decipher what was written there previously, but a 3-pass wipe with at least 1 pass of random makes this extremely difficult and a 9-pass wipe (with at least 1 random) makes it basically impossible.

Oh yeah, but to answer the question of nuking: no you can't always do that. As soon as you install your likely less than Enterprise edition, you're no longer a part of your work network. Apart from losing access to all of your work stuff, they have ways to audit your last login, etc. Usually, you're not allowed to tamper with it.

X services is fine I guess because you're an end user of a laptop sold by whichever sadist retailer packs it with x services.
