Parallels often lags by year or so in support for games in their DX to Metal translation layer.
So Crossover is much better bet to pay for for gaming.
Or self-build Apple Game Porting Toolkit (another Crossover/Wine fork by Apple themselves, but meant for game devs to package with their game).

twin dew

Got my 7800X3D warranty replaced because of VSOC damage, have had to warranty replace RAM before too.

General expectation is that about 1% of electronic parts will need replacement in first year of use because of latent manufacturing faults that only cause issues after some use.

I mean parts as in whole devices.

dire igloo
# flat grove But still

At least for countries with proper coverage, I find it easier to just check their PCPP or price comparison site instead of using whatever I have for myself plus doing currency conversion on top

#

If I have to check current RAM pricing anyway, it's no difference for me whether I search on geizhals.de, German PCPP or Aussie PCPP.
But two of these create extra effort for both me and whoever Aussie I'm helping

dire igloo
dire igloo

Also: don't forget to account for shipping costs, somehow PCPP isn't always reliable for that in Australia

As for this list itself and the parts choices:

  • pairing an AM5 CPU with DDR5-6400 depends a lot on how the XMP/EXPO profile is enabled in regards to fclk ratio, you might actually be better off going for 6000 or even 5600 MT/s (which can also save you money)
  • that SSD is most likely quite bad. The MP44L has been partswapped into oblivion and I doubt its QLC cousin fared any better
  • keeb is Rubberdome/membrane, tho I doubt you can fit mech into your budget
  • the cooler you chose has fans with quite a low quality bearing, I doubt you'll see more than 3y of usage with it. Plus, it probably covers the RAM making the RGB.
  • the PSU while performing well electrically is known to be on the louder side. Not an issue, just a heads up.
  • depending on the usecase, swapping the GPU for its 8gb equivalent might save you enough money to upgrade other things while only losing a little bit of GPU horsepower.
  • all other products are good quality when viewed in isolation, however I didn't check whether any of them have a less expensive or better performance alternative

flat grove

Atleast the ui checks out

flat grove
dire igloo
#

That's what he used to make the list, yes.
But once again, we don't know what filters he applied to get to his conclusion

Because if he used the same filters as me, he would've found a RAM kit that's over $200 less expensive

dire igloo
# tall forum what should i directly change

Let's take a step back first.
When will you be buying the PC?
The market is changing so quickly that it's pretty much impossible to give value-driven advice on specific parts more than a few days in advance

tall forum
#

june is my birthday so if i dont have some parts by then i can just get them for my bday

dire igloo
tall forum
dire igloo
dire igloo
dire igloo
# tall forum how come?

There are four reasons why buying parts from a list over time isn't recommended:

  • List will become invalid over time and will need constant updating (stock changes, price changes) over the buy period
  • New products release — by the time you're done buying over a period of x months or weeks, the earliest part you bought is now x months or weeks old, and there are likely better alternatives out there
  • Return periods no longer intersect if you buy over a long enough period, meaning you have to deal with RMA if you have a part that arrives dead, since you can't test parts until you have most of your parts with you, or if you have testing equipment.
  • Buying over time serves no purpose, since a PC doesn't function until you have all the parts with you
    Conclusion:
You're better off creating and buying a list at the end of your would-be buy period all at once, which will undoubtedly be equal or better than the list bought over time
#

Usually that third point includes links to messages in the PCPP server when people encountered that exact issue

#

Tho that conclusion isn't as accurate anymore given the market shenanigans going on

dire igloo
#

If you have a good deal on the used market, go for it

#

As your home internet provider was mistakenly banned as VPN provider.

twin dew
#

Probably not about proxy, but about CG-NAT.
Which from outside looks like proxy or VPN server.

#

With CG-NAT, the WAN ip of your router isn't same as what the various "what is my ip" sites tell, and is usually in 100.64.0.0 to 100.127.255.255 range.

#

It very probably would have helped.

#

"Why bother, our kludges on kludges still works"

#

Because they don't have enough.
Which is why they use CG-NAT in first place.

#

And because of whoever was the abuse protector for that Intel service wasn't aware that that IP belonged to CG-NAT router.

#

Same thing with the AMD game I got with my CPU.
First to AMD service with one key to get another key to be used at game makers software.

#

Yup.

#

Also just from logistics.
As you don't get specific games, you get to select.
(Also makes it easier AMD/Intel/Nvidia as they can just get charged for the actually gotten games based on those middle-site conversion numbers).

#

Also part of blocking that kind of key trade in theory, as for AMD, getting the next stage needed verification app run on computer with right HW installed.

What We're Changing Right Now

We heard you, and we want to get this right. So here's what's happening:

We’re delaying our global rollout to the second half of 2026. Where we have legal obligations, we will continue to meet them, but we will only expand globally after we've done the following:

mental oriole
#

uuugh

#

Good they're delaying but...

#

Age verification can still goto hell

night girder
#

It seems the goal is still the same.

#

Adding more verification options. We already had alternatives in development, including credit card verification. We’ll complete and expand those before scaling globally so you have more options you’re comfortable with.

#

I hope they add a questionnaire to decide your age or something stupid.

mental oriole
night girder
#

If you're among the less than 10% of users who do need to verify, we'll give you options, designed to tell us only your age and never your identity. And if you choose not to verify, here’s exactly what happens: you keep your account, your servers, your friends list, your DMs, and voice chat. The only thing that changes is you won't be able to access age-restricted content or change certain default safety settings designed to protect teens. Nothing else about your Discord experience changes.

#

Also interesting piece of information.

#

Researchers investigating Discord’s age-verification checks say they discovered an exposed frontend belonging to Persona, the identity-verification vendor used by Discord. It revealed a far more expansive surveillance and financial intelligence stack than a simple “teen safety” tool.
...
In those files, the researchers found details about the extensive surveillance Persona software performs on its users. Beyond checking their age, the software performs 269 distinct verification checks, runs facial recognition against watchlists and politically exposed persons, screens “adverse media” across 14 categories (including terrorism and espionage), and assigns risk and similarity scores.

Goverments pushing age restriction on online platforms. (But not directly asking for a full identification against 269 parameters)
Companies who can provide such services, age checks, using this opportunity to gather way more data.

dire igloo
# tranquil helm i want to build pc but don't know if nvidia can work with amd cpu

It's a long standing urban myth that there is some form of manufacturer synergy between CPU and GPU.
In reality, you can basically pair any AMD or Intel desktop CPU with any AMD, Nvidia or Intel desktop GPU.

There are however still compatibility issues that arise elsewhere, usually from physical obstruction.
If the GPU is too long for the case or the motherboard's PCIe slot placement cause it to interfere with the CPU cooler, you'll have trouble building.
The solution is to use a part picking site that includes a compatibility checker, like https://pcpartpicker.com - and ideally, to have someone knowledgeable look over the parts list before purchasing (I'm sure the people here would be happy to, at least I know that I am)

wanton orchid
#

CPU motherboard + GPU
power requirements vs PSU
can also be a limiting thing when upgrading

dire igloo
#

RAM also a factor with CPU/MB
CPU/GPU is moreso an optimization thing than a compatibility thing - you'd want the best for your usecase within your constraints (tho there are still potential compatibility shenanigans with those, albeit rare ones).

Other compatibility factors:
Case vs CPU cooler
Case vs fans
Case vs GPU
Case vs PSU
Case vs MB
RAM vs CPU cooler
Storage requirements vs drive slots

#

The previous BF, yes it had some flack for females.

bronze jasper

But no one is ranting agbout that. It's about DLC. Content and pricing.

They are just greedy and gamers not taking it.

pure karma

waxen pendant
bronze jasper
night girder
#

But I know what you mean IceyCold though. I know what you mean. I saw those comments too.

#

BF1 I believe? The world war one? or two.

#

and it had females characters and that was a bridge too far for some.

#

And it was too colorful too for a wargame.

bronze jasper
#

battlefield 5 introduced women. battlefield 2042 kept the choice. and people are mad again about women being in battlefield 6

night girder
#

Started off good, but the seasonal updates are terrible. Little content drip fed for three months.
1000 devs, and this is all they can offer?

bronze jasper
#

were women characters in bf1? i forget. i loved that one. its unique because everything is low tech and slower

night girder
#

nah, I'll stop being polite finally and say what it is truly
It was 2025. With the amount of available research, and technology there's no excuse for a big especially experienced corpo to release the game with so many unpolished and forgotten, but yet important aspects.
I played beta, and I was hyped.. It's still feels like a beta sometimes.

waxen pendant
night girder
night girder
#

I can't post all the negative steam reviews 😉

#

but most are just about content. Not females.

bronze jasper
#

doesn't seem like everyone to me. everytime i dig deep into it, it seems mostly like a small minority of players that want to shout loudly

bronze jasper
#

doesn't seem like everyone is pissed. you can cherry pick negative reviews from any game really

night girder
bronze jasper
#

though, i will say, i do hate the "seasons" business model that has shown up

#

all competitive games are doing that one though

#

even beyond competitive like diablo

night girder
#

man what?

waxen pendant
night girder
#

Who's cherry picking? 😕

bronze jasper
night girder
#

that's just a screenshot straight from the steam page, without filters.

#

Mixed for both All reviews and recent.

#

Does it show different reviews based on continents?

bronze jasper
# night girder

maybe it's your country? i'm seeing only 135k steam reviews on mine

i've kinda never trusted steam reviews anyways. it's like trusting the magazine you get at movie theaters to tell you an honest review about the movie they're selling you. i don't think a store should be facilitating consumer reviews. there's a conflict of interest

night girder
#

Wow! 😮

#

That's interesting.

bronze jasper
#

steam is an algorithmic content machine. don't trust it to be honest

night girder
#

I do. But I think your side is filtering something.

#

Or mine isn't filtering something out.

bronze jasper
#

you shouldn't lol. they're not that ethical. while okay, steam makes lots of choices i'm cheering on all the time, they're also a business that wants your money. not a friend.

waxen pendant
#

mine as a third party

night girder
#

More than I trust gatekeeper reviewers who are one person.

bronze jasper
#

i like what epic is doing tbh. they link to opencritic, an open review platform that isn't run by any profit interests

night girder
waxen pendant
#

@night girder what country? Maybe its region based. Icey and eye are on the oppesite coasts of canada

night girder
#

Left client. Right website. Something is getting filtered.

bronze jasper
#

mines from my client

night girder
#

250k on steam client. 100k from website.

#

So I think steam is automatically enabling some filter. That I turned off in the client side.

bronze jasper
#

its "all languages" is where the larger number comes from

waxen pendant
#

thats more again

#

135425 vs 258776 vs 321728

night girder
bronze jasper
#

all languages and only steam purchases comes to the right 258k

night girder
#

So now I use a mix of review methods.
I check steam reviews. I check some youtube gameplay videos to see if it's my thing.

#

and on that information, I make my own descision still 😄

bronze jasper
#

i remember gamestop, did a thing for kane & lynch 2. then they fired jeff gertman cause he reviewed the game like, 6/10 while they had full page advertisements for it

waxen pendant
#

my big question as of late is "is this a scam or malware" before buying not reviews lol

bronze jasper
#

but gertman was never outraged. he never contested his firing and went to work for them again later

night girder
#

Nioh 3 for example had good reviews. But once I saw the graphics and price tag I tapped out.

#

It's still on my radar. But for a sale or something 😛

waxen pendant
night girder
#

Same for Stalker 2. Read reviews. And it wasn't looking good. But I just postpone.

#

And it's hard for a reviewer to make a review objective. So I am more a fan of the global consencus of reviewers, aka steam reviews, metacritic, rottentomatoes, ...

#

while not perfect. Better than single reviewers (who I view sometimes as gatekeepers).

waxen pendant
#

holy shit my steam account is 17 years old.

thiey should stop asking me to age check next year

pure karma
bronze jasper
night girder
#

Today we’re providing an update on the tools available for developers to meet their age assurance obligations under upcoming U.S. and regional laws, including in Brazil, Australia, Singapore, Utah, and Louisiana. Updates to the Declared Age Range API are now available in beta for testing.

pure karma
bronze jasper
#

i find the outrage over age verification laws funny. because all these companies that take payments are all required to know your real identity anyways. "Know your customer" laws means they must verify who you are and what country you're in. The moment their system flags any account that they don't have accurate information on, they ask for government id and a paystub or bill with your address.

I learned about that when Valve froze my account until i did that

pure karma
#

steam must be country based

#

since all 3 of us canadians have the same reviews lol

night girder
#

Still weird, my country is smaller. 🤣

bronze jasper
#

if it was about spying on eveyrone's identities, they would've just made a law that said that

night girder
#

Like, a village to Canada.

isn't copilot just an edge window that opens to the webpage? how would that make your computer glitch?

oblique hamlet
bronze jasper

there's copilot+ stuff that microsoft has in windows, but that only runs if you have a copilot+ chip in a laptop that features it

the regular copilot that everyone gets for free is just an edge window

which is just chromium

i honestly dont understand how people get here. mine is just next to the start bar. if it's running in your taskbar like that, its just a container to a webservice. not really lag inducing.

pure karma

it just runs with no fucks given

bronze jasper

i've never seen it in the taskbar once

#

it's literally a webservice. if it's running, that's just a webpage container

how do panicky people not understand this? the year of the linux desktop is doomed to never happen

waxen pendant

im guessing my current issues are wide spread as i am having many in windos since last weeks forced up date.

My pc sometimes turns off fo no reason at all. Just quits. all screens go black my audio stops and i have to hard reset.

explorer takes forever to search for things

clipstudio and my drawintg tablet dont function as intended

#

hence the linux on the other drive

bronze jasper
#

i'm having some of those issues myself. i'm suspecting either my power supply, or my wall socket

pure karma
#

black screen is a nvidia driver coruption issue but i have it too so idk wtf is causing it

but i wouldent use it so it would be a waste

#

if swapping operating systems dident require a full reboot id just dual boot but yea

#

the dream would be operating systems being able to quickswap

bronze jasper
#

you can run linux with windows inside of it, and using vfio features you can pass the gpu hardware address directly into the vm so windows thinks it has a native gpu instead of a virtualized one

#

or if you have nvidia you can do that in reverse, boot into windows and run linux with gpu access

pure karma
#

you can but thats a lot of work

bronze jasper
#

just to set up

pure karma
#

and would lead to a lot of file location problems

sharp matrix
#

And risk giving copilot a home in linux, oh nohehe

bronze jasper
pure karma
#

i really want linux on my laptop but the kernal isent having any of it 😭

bronze jasper
#

copilot+ is the stuff that runs on native hardware

bronze jasper
#

btw to stop copilot from autostarting, just go to task man startup apps tab and prevent it from auto starting. we used to have to use msconfig for that, but microsoft moved it to the task manager. And people still ignore it

sharp matrix
# pure karma its still a waste of sand

sharp matrix

Anyways, idk how much it will impact the economy overall, ai even product wise is still niche, most of the economy would easily exist without it, and also ai products themselves at least in mission accurate work have proven to be a disaster in reliability, with more and more companies infact switching back to humanies after realizing just how error prone ai models infact are

dire igloo
#

So your main issue with AI isn't with the AI-labeled products themselves, it's with the fact that they are called AI in the first place?

wanton orchid
#

no I said basically that "good AI" is Not labeled AI

#

So you can remove all the AI
and you will still get "the better of it"

dire igloo

As in: hard-coded automation beats AI automation?

I don't really understand what kind of point your making - either that or I fail to follow your logic

Can i get more factory frames using Lossless scaling app?

waxen pendant
#

Well it isn't AI its LLMs and such.

But naming aside id have less issues with it if it didn't feel like the people pushing it are 80s morning cartoon villains pumping waste into the marsh for laughs.

It uses a lot of resources on a large scale for no notable gain.

Keeping it small scale until it is a proven method with a proven use. AND when all this resource is used for the greater good. Atm it feel like yhe best case scenario we get a cyberpunk dystopia. Worst case it is a bubble and we see the greatest economic crash in history

dire igloo

Which would lead to a different kind of dystopia

Aging myself here

I'm nit saying no good can come from it.

The internet we have today was payed for in the dot com bubble where they laid all the infrastructure that the internet we now have is based on.

But I was also around when that bubble crashed. It was horrible. And the current money and resources being pumped into this current bubble makes the .com bubble look like nothing.

well I guess then security of and trust to open source software is not important

#

So the almost hour video about this?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XZ_Utils_backdoor

In February 2024, a malicious backdoor was introduced to the Linux build of the xz utility within the liblzma library in versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1 by an account using the name "Jia Tan". The backdoor gives an attacker who possesses a specific Ed448 private key remote code execution through OpenSSH on the affected Linux system. The issue has been ...

#

With the title making it seem like sky almost fell and civilization ended.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

And that is my point, that channel to me seems to be today all about crying the wolf about everything, making everything seem like giant world ending threat with hugely overlong videos with barely any content.

soft bloom
#

ssh.com/blog/a-recap-of-the-openssh-and-xz-liblzma-incident#how-dangerous

How dangerous is the liblzma?

Ubuntu 24.04LTS was a month away from being shipped with this backdoor, with other distros being on the same boat. Maybe the best way to describe it is this: had it gone undetected, Linux servers would have been running with a bomb waiting to be activated remotely. CVE-2024-3094 is a digital sleeper agent waiting for someone out there to pull the trigger when the time is right, potentially causing one of the most devastating acts of cyberterrorism ever.
to quote ssh itself

twin dew
#

Yes, and we can talk about the issue, without referencing click-bait video about the issue.

#

Trying to infiltrate open source projects does happen with regularity.
And in cases has made to production too.

#

That isn't in any way unique case.
