And it will cost even more hehe

bronze jasper
#

yeah i'm not trusting ANY web company with my ID.

Valve asked me for a photo of my government issued ID and i sent it with my face in the background as i held it up to the camera, looking VERY upset.

I demanded they deleted it upon conclusion of the ticket, but i don't believe them.

#

that was the one time i sent my id to a company and i hated doing it. i dont trust any of the geezers

night girder
#

Here in the EU, they working on global platform for all EU citizens.

This platform will act as a middle step for age verification.

Website A wants to know your age/id.
Website B (EU age verification app) opens up, you verify to website B.
Website B tells website A you all good.
Website A never knows anything of you. It's just a simple boolean (in theory).

#

But I am not sure if I am happy with that too.

#

The internet is going from very open. To very strict and closed place if we need to have ID for every single app, website and game.

visual tree
#

Better than uploading your ID at least

night girder
#

I rather not upload anything? Been working fine for 20 years now 🤣

visual tree
#

Same but I am worried those f**** will force us to upload ID or confirm age anyway they can

night girder
#

Well, luckily we don't have to be online and it's still a choice.

#

anyway, time to go hunt down some food

visual tree
#

People fight against ID verification because everyone on the internet is a dog hehe

bronze jasper
#

i dont trust any of these geezers to protect the data

#

there's no money in it to make it worth investing into security

#

Canada Revenue got hacked for ffs and that does have money involved and they still cheaped out

#

the used the free open source openSSL instead of an enterprise solution that was professionally maintained. So now canada is dealing with systematic identity theft problems that are going to persist for at least another decade because of it.

visual tree
#

There are also insider jobs where employees export personal data to usb and sell it to third parties

#

"A scandal broke out in Croatia after it was discovered that data on more than a million motor vehicle owners had been leaked to the public without authorization.

The index reports that N1 received a clarification from the Croatian Security Operations Agency (SOA), from which they explained that the leakage of data on vehicles and vehicle owners in Croatia did not occur through hacking, but because a person who had access to that data made an unauthorized copy and published it. For the record, this is about 2.4 million vehicle records and 1.1 million natural persons. Among the unauthorized published data are names, addresses, tax numbers, JMBGs, dates of birth, registrations and other data about vehicles and their insurance policies."

bronze jasper
#

Really what they should be implementing for any of these systems is a private public key encryption system. You would sign your own verification with your own private key.

We've had decades to teach people what private keys are but it's 2026 and 99% of people have no idea how they work.

visual tree
#

And people always ask how other car insurance companies always know exactly when your insurance expires. This is how they knew, that person who extracted data on usb stick sold them data....

bronze jasper
#

where i live we have one insurance corporation only, mandated by law. I hate it. But we don't have that problem at least.

#

i'd almost welcome that problem for a little more competition in the market

visual tree
#

Insurance companies basically bought personal data on the black market

bronze jasper
visual tree
#

Considering how bad our government IT security is, I don't want to know how they handle my data or how many people had access to it....

#

At this point, everyone is going to get their identity stolen sooner or later

#

And it won't be their fault which is a bigger tragedy

bronze jasper
#

plain text

#

now you know. and knowing is half the battle

visual tree
#

And half the depression 🤣

#

Btw, I hate my neti pot. Anyone tried using squeeze bottle like this for rinsing sinuses?

Looks easier than the stupid neti pot I just can't figure out how to use properly

languid gulch

i don't use those because i'm extra paranoid about Naegleria

I use NaCl for rinsing my sinuses so there is no risk of amoeba

bronze jasper
#

my dad uses one of these. it looks so gross. i hate it. yeuck.

all i ever do is plug one nostril and blow it all out in the shower. rocket style

#

This is what I use for rinsing. Costs only 1 euro

bronze jasper

#

Much better than boiling water and risking amoeba eating my brain hehe

night girder
#

And it's like picking between Discord (corporation) or EU (politicians), but I do trust EU tiny bit more than Discord when they say they value our privacy.

bronze jasper
#

right. they're just going to verify the data with absolutely no information about a person on their side.

they'll get hacked and faster because they're a bigger less secure target than a corporation that makes profit from data collection

night girder
#

EU already owns our data 🤣 As a citizen.

#

Discord doesn't.

#

Man talking about this makes me realize how true cyberpunk is becomming.

visual tree
#

Yeah, better grab food before the supermarket closes 🤣

night girder
#

Nah, just the fact that the new world isn't led by politicians. But corporations.

#

Just finished S2 of Fallout. And I hope you all played fallout?

#

||In fallout lore, it's actually the corporations behind all the shenigans, the vaults, dropping of bombs etc. Politics weren't involved much afaik.||

#

But it's the same as cyberpunk world did.

Season 3 is going to be about Enclave I think

night girder

No shit 🤣

visual tree
#

And "Rome alone" 🤣

night girder

No offense, but Fallout aint exactly GOTY stuff

#

it's pretty clear what the plots are. What plots got finished.

And which ones are setting up S3.

I also doubt Hank is suddenly going to become a good person because he erased his memory

He still has an evil nature

night girder

In s3 we will learn the chip can be removed.||

And then 2 episodes later ||they march with a full army into Las Vegas. Where? How? Huh? Why didn';t they help fighting the romans? Why only help after half the dead claws were killed.||

The writting is really cheap sometimes 😛

but fits fallout haha

#

They already declared Fallout on netflix the best videogame tv adaptation but I disagree imo

night girder

Also how many times can you be betrayed by the same person... and still fall for it lol

better than Witcher, Last Standing or something. The one with the mushroom zombies and girls navigating their emotions.

I don't think there is.

there isn't a best

so why would you say fallout isn't the best if you don't think there is a best lmfao

night girder
#

Nah, but Fallout is one of the better ones.

night girder
#

Atleast it entertained me. Just have to turn off brain.

I might watch fallout because many people say it's good

Season 1 was ok but the second one was boring tbh

night girder
shell anchor

what

night girder
#

yup ...

shell anchor
#

because of a single joke?

#

I find that kinda hard to believe

night girder
#

Not everyone saw it as a joke.

#

And more of pushing "The Message" ...

shell anchor
#

I'm pretty sure people said the show was bad because they thought it was bad, not because of a single line

night girder
#

I just don't watch it.

#

Cba with review bombing anything 🤣

#

You should internet more if you trully believe people wont review bomb because of stuff like that.

shell anchor
#

that's stupid lmfao

night girder
#

AC got bombed because of a samurai with certain ... background.

#

Before game got released.

#

It's the internet. Crazy place.

shell anchor
#

people didn't think the rise of skywalker was bad because of the line "Somehow Palpatine returned" that's just an example of its badness

night girder
#

Just think.

#

The fact it's a gif ... 😄

shell anchor
#

what

night girder
#

You didn't believe me 🤣

shell anchor
#

No, I don't believe it's the sole reason people don't like the show. that's fucking stupid.

visual tree
#

It's like when people roasted Stranger Things ending because of Will opening up to everyone

night girder
#

You can't put all people on a pile, never.

#

So not everyone ditched it because of that. But there was a whole lot of commotion and really turned off people.

night girder
#

S2 reviews 😒

#

Wtf happened.

#

49% difference from community.

visual tree
#

I also didn't like Season 5 and feel it was rushed

night girder
#

I didn't watch it.

#

For some reason, I can't get past S3-4.

#

It feels all... so much the same.

visual tree
night girder
#

I read, not sure if it's true, the writers only had enough for one season with a flew lose ends. (Season 1)
But they never actually had a big plan for the show and never expected it to become so big.

#

And then suddenly Netflix told them; "Make another season, quick, people love it!"

#

Has anyone watched that Splinter Cell series on Netflix? (Anime/Cartoon) - wonder if it's good.

visual tree
#

Probably since they are already milking the series and releasing The tales from 85's

#

It's like it's never enough money for them and they want more

night girder
#

People watch a whole season in one evening, hungry for more.

#

So Netflix tries to find ways (in the beginning) to keep pushing out season as quickly as possible.
Now they start to release episodes over time with shows. To keep up user retention.

shell anchor
#

yeah I also never watched stranger things

#

I remember it was huge a couple years ago and you were a hillbilly if you weren't watching it

bronze jasper
#

i actually give them credit for NOT milking stranger things too bad and seeing it through. It got 5 solid seasons that took 10 years to make. The spinoff (cartoon) isn't beginning until its been done for a while. I been fine with the pacing for it.

#

i watched each season and it was fun. not a favorite but it's fun

night girder
#

I really loved S1 of stranger things but the other seasons ... they lost me.

soft bloom
#

so, Discord is going to ask or id now?

bronze jasper
#

i grew up with that old style of over the top horror. Nightmare on elmstreet, Friday 13th, Hellraiser, Critters, all that nonsense. it's a fun throwback

night girder
#

And I wondered over the seasons ... where is this going?

bronze jasper
night girder
#

I was hoping for... how do you say it again.

#

An arc/story that spans over multiple seasons.

#

But it felt more like bumbing from one story into another ... without any red line. Atleast not to me.
Ok, you have the otherside. But that's it. ||Where the hell did the Russians come from in S3?||

shell anchor
#

if they ask for my ID I am leaving lmfao, not that dedicated to using discord

bronze jasper
#

apprantly theres a play now. like a stage play, that explains how it all begun. Why there's an || E.R. bridge connecting earth with an alien world||. I guess it ties into the ||Philidelphia experiment|| which i've always loved cause it was a big urban legend in the 80s

#

I'll probably watch a youtube breakdown about the play

night girder
#

But it would have been cool. If that was the Netflix show itself.

#

Showing us what happened, how we got to this point, etc.

bronze jasper
#

yup. that would've been useful

night girder
#

But not a bad show by anymeans.

bronze jasper
#

I also believe in the writing philosophy where your world building should be wayyyy deeper than what you actually reveal to the audience. i think thats what the duffers were attempting

#

not so much a desire to milk a franchise. i mean , it's really not that milked tbh

night girder
#

I can't agree with you more. i've been thinking that for a while now why LOTR was so successful.

#

Because the world building was WAY deeper than the movies showed.

bronze jasper
#

Yeah tolkien is a big part of why i think that works lol

night girder
#

The source material, was just crazy. So much to work with if you had the passion.

bronze jasper
#

Just the appendixes of the books and the similarion and all his notes. Even before it was a movie

night girder
#

And I think that made the movie triology so well received.

#

and another fact that kinda supports this logic.

bronze jasper
#

Love me the movies

night girder
#

The hobbit was one book. And they made it into 3 movies. Did not work.

bronze jasper
#

yeah it tried to do a bunch of the similarian but all that extra knowledge works better in the background

#

and they made up a whole thing where gandalf fights sauron. dumb.

night girder
#

"Maybe I gave them some ideas, but they never listened to me," he said, laughing before repeating, "They never listen." He also seemingly gave an impression of someone at Netflix, saying, "Who's this? It's a writer, it's nobody," waving his hand in dismissal.

  • Andrzej Sapkowski

I just remember the quotes from the writer of the Witcher. About Netflix not wanting to listen to him 🤣

#

Like the man wrote the books! Why not take his advice, he knows the world he created.

bronze jasper
#

The author of the witcher tho... he's sort of mental. He generally disregards the games and thinks videogames in general offer no value to anyone. Kind of an art snob about it.

The show only exists because the game made the books so globally popular

#

He probably told netflix they can't take any direction from the games, so they ignored him

#

He doesn't want any print versions of his books to use video game images either, but the publishers ignore him there too

night girder
#

I don't think the game would be as good without the source material.

#

So I guess they both benefit from eachother.

bronze jasper
#

Yeah the world building helps a lot

Shower thought: When are we going to start getting AMD CPUs/Intel CPUs/PCHes that don't support SATA, only NVME?

Also, how many amps of 3.3v/5v would a modern (even 2010s) system draw from a standard EATX power supply?

jagged snow
sterile plinth
void pine
#

I have NEVER seen a drive that uses 3.3v

#

that is what I saw when I went to that link

#

Assuming the motherboard has 8 rear USB ports and 4 front ports, that's 12 amps assuming each USB device is pulling a full 1A (in reality, two ports are likely to be taken up by Mouse/Keyboard and devices rarely charge at a full 1A)

#

Assuming drives pull 2A each and you have 4 of them (my SSD pulls 0.8a) that's 8a, or 20a total

slow flint
#

Its still useful for Bulk storage
A 8TB HDD is way cheaper per GB than a 4TB NVMe
So there's still use cases for sata in newer system apart from legacy hardware support

PS/2 connectors also have advantages compared to usb. No imput lag, Nkey rollover, way more stable. I’m kinda sad my modo don’t have them.

I guess you could say my computer has alzheimer's disease and runs out of memory all the time

languid gulch
#

ok i have a dumb question

#

moving files from one spinning drive to the other spinning drive on my system seems to be impossible. it starts off ok, makes it to about 10%, then the transfer rate drops off a cliff down to kb/s. i tested both drives' health, they showed up as completely ok.

#

wtf could be going on to do that

bronze jasper
twin dew
#

SMR drive

#

Runs out of CMR cache.

languid gulch
#

how do i check that

twin dew
#

Give the drive model string from Windows.

#

Or check if it supports TRIM/Discard, only SMR HDD:s do.

#

For that destination drive.

languid gulch
#

the one i'm trying to copy to is SMR

twin dew
#

Yeah, those suck for writes.
And all consumer drives for ages have been SMR.
And even some WD NAS drives.

languid gulch
#

k, good to know

#

was worried that CDI was wrong about its health or something

twin dew
#

Basically need to be written in very long strips, as the "tracks" overlap so much, that if you write track X-1 and track X+1, track X would be completely gone.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shingled_magnetic_recording

Shingled magnetic recording (SMR) is a magnetic storage data recording technology used in hard disk drives (HDDs) to increase storage density and overall per-drive storage capacity. Conventional hard disk drives record data by writing non-overlapping concentric magnetic tracks (conventional magnetic recording [CMR], Perpendicular recording), whi...

languid gulch
#

i do remember SMR being a bit of a game changer for storage when it first came out

#

would copying stuff from a SMR HDD to an SSD, then over to the other HDD make a difference?

twin dew
#

Nah, just tiny bit more space for same gen tech.
With originally computer controlled SMR for archieval drives.
But then the drive manufacturers started shipping drive controlled SMR drives to consumers.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

so it's good for a bunch of little files, kinda crap for big single files

twin dew
#

So they have some CMR (Conventional magnetic recording" are as buffer, and contents of that then get transferred to SMR areas when drive is idle and CMR contains at least one SMR tracks worth of stuff.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

gotcha

#

so it was a cheap drive for a reason 🤣

twin dew
#

Like I said, all consumer drives have been SMR for ages.
Need to go for WD Red Plus or higher, or Seagate Ironwolf/Skyhawk or better to not get SMR today.

languid gulch
#

have those caught up in capacity?

twin dew
#

So all WD consumer drives, all Seagate consumer drives and WD Red (no-postfix) drives are SMR.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

oh, i thought that they were both more expensive & had less capacity because they weren't SMR

twin dew
#

The actual consumer price is about the same between SMR and CMR, manufacturers just pocket the difference.

languid gulch
#

ok that makes sense

#

well, i mean, it sucks, but it's understandable

twin dew
#

But at one point the common SMR zone size was 256MiB, so if you wanted to modify even one bit, you had to read whole 256MiB into cache, modify that one bit in the cache, and write 256MiB back into the zone.
Which for long time you could tell SMR drive from it being marketed having 256MiB of DRAM while CMR drives had 64MB.
But cannot be used anymore as 256MiB of DRAM is now common for CMRs too.

#

That being what start to happen once that CMR type actual on-disk storage "cache" is filled.

languid gulch
#

it's just weird that it drops down to kb/s

twin dew
languid gulch
#

will it eventually speed up a bit after that?

twin dew
#

No.
Only after it has had time to be idle and empty that CMR area to SMR zones.

languid gulch
#

ok

#

so long as that's how it's supposed to behave i'm not as worried 🤣

#

last time this happened to me the drive did actually die

twin dew
#

That is how any drive-managed SMR drive behaves once that CMR area is full and writes continue.

#

The other being original host-managed SMR drives, that needed special controllers on the host side, not standard SATA etc. ones.

#

Still used in enterprise side for archieval purposes etc.

languid gulch
#

that also explains why enterprise loves to stripe hundreds of them together

#

i kinda knew that, i just have never had any direct experience with it

twin dew
#

No, completely different thing.
Drive-managed SMR basically doesn't exist in enterprise space.
Only host-managed SMR for archieval, and CMR.

languid gulch
#

i assume that in order to have the drives be host-managed SMR, they'd need to have the ability to be drive-managed SMR

twin dew
#

No.
Host-managed SMR was first, where that computer side controller is in charge of that zone management etc. and the drive is dumb.
Drive-managed SMR needs complex controller on the drive itself.

languid gulch
#

oh wow

#

that kinda feels backwards to me 🤣

twin dew
#

So it only came as result of drive makers seeing more profit in consumer space by needing less platter surface for same amount of storage, lowering costs.

languid gulch
#

would there be any benefit for an enterprise space to switch to drive-managed SMR and ditch their host-managed SMR controllers?

twin dew
#

Host-managed SMR is not general use in enteprise space.
It is specialist tech for those sequential write only loads like backup storage or other archieval uses.

#

And point is that in that, the computer is aware of everything, while with drive-managed SMR the computer isn't in control.

languid gulch
#

so it's just not worth the pain to make the switch for stuff that's just archived anyway

twin dew
#

Drive-managed SMR is the worse tech to both CMR and host-managed SMR.

#

But you couldn't stuff SMR into consumer space in any other way.

languid gulch
#

got it 🤣

#

see, i like learning this stuff from people who know it & aren't bound by NDA to lie about it

languid gulch
#

oof, made some people in another discord upset that i reminded them that their little mmo really only cares about how much money they can suck out of customers

dire igloo

night girder
#

void pine
#

I hav a drive from about 2020 that’s CMR2tb

#

There was a large amount of backlash so some drives are still CMR

twin dew
#

That was the timeframe for the change from CMR to SMR.

#

Try to find single one today.

void pine
#

I do remember SMR drives being E-waste brand new, I made the mistake of installing to one and the computer took over an hour to boot

twin dew
void pine
#

I… do not understand why drive manufacturers use SMR

twin dew
#

WD is much more silent.

twin dew
void pine
#

It slightly decreases cost but makes the drives absolutely unusable

twin dew
#

So more profit.

#

And they do work for light use.
Just die on anything doing lot of writes with no idle time.

void pine
#

In a 2.5” drive makes no sense to me because if you want cold storage, you use 3.5”

#

HDDs are rarely used in laptops anymore, if at all

twin dew
#

WD Blue 3.5" have SMR and CMR variants at each tier, and only single letter change in the model number denoting.
X ending are CMR, and Z ending are SMR.
2.5" Blues are all SMR.

#

And like said, the complete fuckup is WD Reds being SMR... Red Plus and Red Pro are CMR.

void pine
#

Isn’t Blue meant to be used as a boot drive

twin dew
void pine
#

Most consumers are going to be using their drive to boot off

twin dew
#

Red:s are supposed to be NAS drives, Purples video surveillance, Blacks are "prosumer".

void pine
#

So WD has basically exited the 2.5” drive market

twin dew
#

Which is also why any currently sold external HDD is going to be SMR.

void pine
#

Terrible for general use since they’re SMR
Terrible for server use because they’re low capacity and higher cost per terrabyte

twin dew
#

Both do have enterprise segment 2.5" HDDs with CMR.

twin dew
#

If you look that Seagate list, their enterprise CMR disks top at 30TB, and enterprise SMR drives top out at 36TB.

#

Because both are at the top of what they can currently do for bit density.

#

SMR allowing them to stuff 20% more storage into same physical platter area, as the final stripes are narrower.

#

But on that SMR, the stripes are so narrow that you cannot write both X-1 and X+1 and still have anything readable left of X.

#

So you have to do any writing onto the disk in much larger batches going from start of zone to end of zone in one go, and cannot do block level replaces anymore.
Where then there is CMR size split between neighboring zones.

#

Basic idea being, if you can write in 2 units wide strip, and you can read in 1 unit wide strip.
With CMR, you need to space the strips 3 units apart, so if first write X, then X-1, then X+1, you will have 2 units wide X-1, 1 unit wide X, and 2 units wide X+1 in the end on the disk.
With SMR you just write X-1, X, X+1 all in one go, every time, with 2 units width from each other, and in the end on the disk you have X-1 and X at 1 unit width, and X+1 at 2 units width.

#

Going from 5 units width for three tracks to 4 units width for three tracks.
And with that difference getting larger more tracks you pack into a zone.

#

So currently on CRM HDD, you can do writes in 4kB units (and old drives were 512B)
On SMR HDD, you can do writes in 256MiB units (for most part), outside of that CMR cache region.

First off, don't full on hate windows
Secondly, I do daily Linux. I have two Linux desktops and two Linux servers.

This laptop was my third Linux machine and I had Kubuntu on it for years and used it almost daily. I quite like Linux.

However, the dgpu is nvidia and the driver compatibility just wasn't there. If I wanted to play any games, it had to be on windows. My role at work has changed and I can now do everything from a desktop, so I wanted to set this laptop up for gaming.

Am I not allowed to comment on the fact that the taskbar failed to load the icons for flipping file explorer and settings, both built-in windows components? I didn't even complain or say windows sucked or anything, just noted that it was broken on the second boot ever after being installed 24h ago.

Clarification on our approach to age assurance

We’ve seen some questions about our age assurance update and we want to share more clarity. We know how important these changes are to our community.

# twin dew Could you try to reformat the question and include more details of what you are ...

Sorry i went to the shop so i couldn't answer, for example 1: i don't have anything to play and i start roblox, then i join the game and in many tower defense games the game itself and "round" on the different servers so it forcibly leaves this game and joins the round and thats the part where it just infinitely loads without any progress, example 2: i'm trying to launch game in steam and it takes 2-3 minutes to launch which is strange bc on any other wifi with the same speed it would take 10 seconds if steam was opened before, example 3: wifi has 5hz and 2.4hz, i can switch between them freely on phone but on pc it takes some time to connect to 2.4hz and i can't connect to 5hz at all(when connecting it says something like "checking network requirements" and after it can't connect it says "couldn't connect to network")

Basically if desktop MB doesn't have the WLAN card right at the backpanel inside metal shell:

#

But has it lower down with inside case antenna wires, you are very likely to have issues in combination with gaming GPUs.

Older MSI board putting the WLAN card right under the GPU...

#

As the worst possible example of placement.

#

Asrock doing the same with B650M PG Lightning WiFi:

But basically anything with inside case antenna wires cannot be trusted with dGPU.
And you really want this style, even when it makes any WLAN card swaps pain:

When selecting a MB for use with WiFi

Those do contain standard WLAN cards inside the metal clamshell shielding.

If it's also on phone then it's more likely a transmitter(router) issue rather than reciever.
Does it depend on your location? Like only happens in your room or smth. Maybe you're too far from the router.

also i noticed that, nvm i forgot

5ghz should have less interference from other routers and get a better connection if there's not much between your device and router.

How much space efi system partition should have?

twin dew
#

Depends.
128MB can usually work, 512MB is plenty for most uses, for SystemD-Boot in combination with some other stuff, might need way more.

#

As SystemD-Boot puts kernel and initrd:s on EFI partition, as it cannot read anything but FAT32.
While with GRUB2 etc. those live on /boot/.

soft bloom
#

On my laptop, just 8 mb are used on that partition.
I want to shrink it and make more room for /boot when upgrading ubuntu

So GRUB2 for example uses less than 5MB for me on EFI partition.
Laptop UEFI updates can use that to hold the update file as example of extra use.

this is a better venue for tech conversation

coming from a CG entertainment background for none interactive entertainment (movies and such)

Path tracing is a rendering algorithm in computer graphics that simulates how light interacts with objects, voxels, and participating media to generate realistic (physically plausible) images

NOT to be confused with modern implementation of trying to achieve this in real time in video games with technology such as

PathTracer
Lumen Global Illumination
Raytracing (Nvidia)

all these technolgies are trying to Path trace in real time

languid gulch
#

and also the fact that all of radeon's lineup is available without the stupid 12VHPWR

thick tinsel
#

"NOT to be confused with modern implementation of trying to achieve this in real time in video games" so, what you did

waxen pendant
thick tinsel
#

& also I think if we're gonna call lumen a path tracing implementation then the term just doesn't mean anything anymore

waxen pendant
#

ii understand the confusion

thick tinsel
#

the effect in general is called "light"

waxen pendant
#

I know of no other simple term that would fit a generic desciption

#

Light\ could be confused with standard rasterization

thick tinsel
#

path tracing is not an effect. like you said yourself, it's an algorithm, and software lumen is a very different algorithm. they both try to simulate the effect of light coming from light sources, bouncing on surfaces, then entering our eye, but path tracing is just one category of techniques to do that

verbal raft
#

well the SW path atleast

thick tinsel
#

lumen simply on account of computing AO, GI and reflections separately from one another makes it not path tracing

waxen pendant
languid gulch
#

there's also so many ways to do it, and so many methods & "how detailed do we want to implement it" decisions by companies, that to me is the more confusing part

pure karma
#

lumen is light raytracing is shadows path tracing is drugs that make it all work out in the end

languid gulch
#

it reminds me of all the bullshit names car companies came up with for their own versions of variable valve timing

waxen pendant
#

so until society as a whole has a simple way to discribe these featurese that doesnt require a long explantion this confusinmg wil continue

thick tinsel
#

it makes sense to conflate these things if you come from a CG background because basically all offline CG is rendered using path tracing
but path tracing is just one way to do GI & Reflection (which path tracing effectively treats as one and the same)

languid gulch
#

or until all these companies decide to use a non-copywrited term to describe it

thick tinsel
#

zelda BOTW has a real time GI solution but I sure as hell wouldn't call it path tracing

waxen pendant
verbal raft
thick tinsel
#

I see most peoples using either "light" or "global illumination" to designate the thing that whatever tech is being discussed is trying to simulate
also why have a generic term? there's way too much variety in the tech for any given term to be able to encompass it all

thick tinsel
thick tinsel
#

also worth noting that basically every game that has a path tracing option also has ray tracing based rendering options that exist separately from the path tracer, making that distinction even more worthwhile

waxen pendant
thick tinsel
#

I'm gonna be real anybody who cares that little about the tools they're using should probably not use these tools or discuss them, leave it to someone who can remember names

languid gulch
#

sadly that's not how corporations work

thick tinsel
#

that is how peoples work though

#

if you can't be bothered to avoid calling lumen "path tracing" you can just not talk about it

#

it's hardly ever corporations misnaming these things anyway. have yet to see any company say their game has path tracing when they weren't talking about actual path tracing

bronze jasper
#

To gamers, the end users, it doesn't actually matter if something is technically path tracing or not. Jargon is kind of specific to expert fields, not consumer spaces

#

The consumer space can't even get storage device sizes right

thick tinsel
#

Most "gamers" don’t incorrectly call things path tracing already

#

Like this is genuinely the first time I've seen peoples incorrectly call something path tracing. Usually it’s the other way around if anything

#

And also the thing is that like, it’s not just jargon, it’s actual names for options peoples see in game. It’s not something you have to learn from somewhere else, games already show to peoples that path tracing is a specific thing separately from other ray tracing or GI related things

bronze jasper
#

It's jargon. Technically correct terms for things that only experts in the field would care about is exactly what jargon is

night girder

#

And yeah, exposure it a thing when taking pictures.

twin dew
#

Point is that it is, that there are fuckton more lit-through keycap options for north-side leds, than south-side.

night girder
#

but not impossible to find south keycaps so?

twin dew
#

Try to find any in anything that isn't US layout?
Remember you need to get:
Layout (US vs. International and so on. with different Enter etc.)
Markings (Regional markings)
Material
Stabilizer-type
Bottom-row button widths
Row to Row curve
To fit your use and the keyboard base.

night girder
#

Look south facing keycaps. Not that bad?

twin dew
#

And now also if meant for north or south leds on as extra.

twin dew
night girder
#

And further to proof that what I said, the angle of that reddit post was off.

twin dew
#

Yes, if you can get south-side designed keycaps.

night girder
#

This angle is top-down. So the bleed is less.

twin dew
#

But those are much rarer than north-side.

night girder
#

If you angle camera between the keycaps, yes it looks bad.

#

But probably also if you do same from north direction of keyboard with north facing leds.

twin dew
night girder
twin dew
night girder
#

...

twin dew
#

Ah, sorry, those do have...

#

Where did I get that...

night girder
#

Also, my eye fell on this one.

#

But then I realised, that's going to be a lot of cleaning. Because of the cut outs.

twin dew
#

But at least their own V6 keycap sets on that page are center legended...
Say they are doubleshot, but the pics show absolutely no illumination through:

#

Sorry for screenshot, their site has some stuff in way of getting the pic directly easily.

#

non-shine-through PBT keycaps

#

Yeah, same on all of those...

night girder
twin dew
#

So I did remember correctly that their keycaps don't have lit legends.

night girder
#

Ah V6. Not K6.

#

Because V6 CLEALY shines through.

twin dew
#

They do sell some keycaps that are shine-through, but nothing on that page you linked is.

#

When you buy a keyboard, but not separately.

#

Ok, that was wrong, in the full range there are shine-throughs too.

#

That they are reselling from other brands.

night girder
#

Another k6.

#

And another.

#

So not sure why you think they are not shine trough. Mine is too.

twin dew
#

But again, getting US-layout stuff in different combinations is easy.
Getting ISO type is hard.
Getting Nordic is almost impossible.

night girder
#

I gave up.

#

I have azerty keyboard for gaming. Set it to qwerty ages ago.

twin dew
#

You keep posting US layouts.

night girder
#

I don't care about the layout of my keyboards anymore. Since well, my country uses Azerty.

#

Just set it to QWERY (windows) and never look at the keys. Because that throws me off 🤣

night girder
twin dew
#

Only in north-side labels or non-see-through.

night girder
#

Haha, Nordic impossible? South facing Nordic ISO. Not sure if the keycaps are south facing though.

twin dew
#

I known they have Nordic keyboards, just not with see-through labels.
Like with ALL the ISO keyboards they have.

night girder
#

I mean, I like Keychron. Lots of customization.

twin dew
#

Yes, and if they did north-side leds, they would be something I would have already bought.
But cannot get usable see-through keycaps in ISO with their south-side leds.
Even ignoring Nordic.

night girder
#

Oh interesting.

#

Keychron (marketing) reasoning for south:

The south-facing RGB LED is designed to better illuminate the keyboard backlight from the typist’s angle with the premium non-shine-through PBT keycaps installed. The south-facing RGB is also free from interference when the users install OEM or Cherry-profile alternative keycaps on the keyboard.

twin dew
#

Yeah, it gives better in-between keys lighting, and that is exactly what I don't like to have.

#

As I count that as unwanted glare.

#

Which also tracks with them not having single their brand keycap set with see-through markings to use that backlight for actual label illumination.
Instead of that between keys glare that they seem to love.

#

Even for US.
They do have US keycap sets they use, but those aren't being sold under their own brand at their accessory section.

#

But basically as most keyboards for very long time had their main key markings in top left quadrant of the key.
And most lit keyboards also kept that location, often centering it to top-center.
And so most see-through label keycaps are for north-side leds, not south-side.
With Keychron being one of the few doing south-side leds, but not making keycaps that would suit that in actual shine-through for whatever reason.
Basically whoever is charge only cares about that in-between-keys lighting, not label lighting.

#

For US layout and markings, you can get south-side see-through keycaps.
For ISO, not so much.
And even for US those are much rarer than north-side.

#

And what I want with lit keyboard, is to have dim lighting for the actual markings, so I can read them in dark if needed for some reason or other.
Utility, not spectacle and glare.

Neither do I, but sometimes needed, especially for less used special characters at times.

In my experience, RGB is just preference, fancy and not really needed.
Nothing wrong with RGB for mood or effects. But I rarely sit here in the dark and look at my keys to find something.
Maybe it's just the feeling I can see my keys if I really need too? Not sure.

Just single color red leds for me, at minimum brightness.
And could go lower if the device allowed.

night girder

Altough, I did say I never use the numpad on my keyboard a while ago. Which was a lie.
I just don't realize when I use it 🤣

Typing to me, is like walking, I just don't think about it. So I even don't know how I use it.

But a while back I discovered myself that I was using the numpad 🤣

As in this keyboard doesn't have RGB, just red leds.

Peter Thiel:

I remain committed to the faith of my teenage years: to authentic human freedom as a precondition for the highest good. I stand against confiscatory taxes, totalitarian collectives, and the ideology of the inevitability of the death of every individual. For all these reasons, I still call myself "libertarian." ... But I must confess that over the last two decades, I have changed radically on the question of how to achieve these goals. Most importantly, I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible... The 1920s were the last decade in American history during which one could be genuinely optimistic about politics. Since 1920, the vast increase in welfare beneficiaries and the extension of the franchise to women — two constituencies that are notoriously tough for libertarians — have rendered the notion of "capitalist democracy" into an oxymoron.

twin dew
night girder

Btw EU is also pushing the age thing HARD. ~~Biased ~~vid man. Ok they mention UK act. But that's not really EU.

twin dew
#

But yeah, in this case the epstein link was stupid to bring in.

night girder
#

I am going to be honest.

dire igloo
night girder
#

The whole Epstein thing everyone is so crazy about?

#

I can't care less. Everyone has smoke in their hands trying to make a case about it.

#

I don't know the word, in dutch we say "doofpot operatie". And that has happened.

#

What everyone is seeing, is likely fake, edited etc.

#

It's just a distraction for the real world issues the politicians use to keep the peasants chasing their own tails.

dire igloo
#

It's one of the biggest political scandals of this century, maybe even THE biggest.
I've seen people call it bigger than Watergate and I'm inclined to agree

night girder
#

So they (leaders) can keep doing whatever sshady plans they have.

#

"Look to the left, epstein files" - and to the right they hollow out the legal system.

twin dew
#

That tons of high-flying people were involved, and certainly still are involved even with Epstein gone, in kiddy diddling?

night girder
#

Based on files that were in x people hand, got redacted, filtered, modified. Yeah sounds like a strong legal case. With a lots of pure evidence. And totally no problems when it comes to age of witnesses etc.

dire igloo
night girder
#

That's why I keep saying it, Epstein is a distraction in my eyes. And I leave the morals of the case out of it. I hate what happened.

But when I look how they "promised" to release "the files" ... cmon thats just a tactic.

#

As if we get to see the FULL files. We don't even know what happene din prison and how the cameras mysterious got disabled.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Man... how you not see! "also iirc still haven't released everything" and half the internet is like 99% sure they cracked the case. hehe

#

It's so crazy.

#

If it was up to me. Don't release anything.

#

Do the court dance. When he is guilty or not guilty, release verdict and case to public.

#

Not release shit half and half and shady to the public.

night girder
#

US congressman reveals names of six men whose names were redacted in the Epstein files, including a US billionaire and well-connected Dubai CEO.

twin dew
#

Do note that so far we have seen the TAMEST stuff for most part.

dire igloo
#

Imagine if these files were released in 2010, it would've been a political disaster.
Several politicians in Europe have resigned because of ties to Jeffrey Epstein - and that's in today's political climate where expecting integrity from a politician is wishful thinking

night girder
#

So, a witch hunt on half a story. We're back into medieval times 🤣

#

Not denying the magnitude of the case. Just how it's all playing out, it's just crazy how they play with us. And I just hope people realised, they are getting trolled/played by politicians with this.

twin dew
#

And DOJ seems to still to be doing its harders to keep the the names of the people involved, who aren't the victims, secret.

dire igloo
twin dew
night girder
#

And what's the citizens, with half the story/information?

#

When they promised full hehe

#

Nah, it's just setting people up against eachother, distraction from other goals (Greenland, Iran, Gaza).

dire igloo
# night girder I read they did redact.

They did redact a lot of stuff, especially names of people involved (also entire pages which was a meme of its own), but they also forgot to redact things like names or faces of victims

Also, they sometimes have duplicates of documents which were redacted differently

night girder
#

So, why did you read them? Pure out of interest?

#

on a more possitive note 😊

Instead, Discord relies on a background “age inference model” that profiles user behavior to classify accounts as adult or teen.

#

"they're trying to take over the market"

wonder where i heard that kind of panic from before

night girder
#

Wait wait. What?

I don't see it as something bad. Companies that make memory decided to ditch consumers for AI.
The prices skyrocket. This leaves a gap in the market.

This is how the "free" market and competition works right?

#

If the Chinese are able to make cheaper and quality memory, I don't care.

#

but I am a bit worried, the free market isn't as free. And the moment Chinese memory threatens to take over local markets here, some goverments will act.

#

"We have to protect our internal market against foreign threats" - or some crappy argument. When they are the ones who let this all happen in the first place.

#

Take the Nexperia story for example etc.

#

On October 25, 2018, Nexperia was acquired by Wingtech Technology, a partially state-owned Chinese ODM for smartphone companies for $3.6 billion.[21][22][23] Wingtech is partially owned by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC).[22][23]
