Wow, the Pi 1 booted from the "mangled" memory card I created by converting the Ext4 partition to BTRFS with one-partition mirroring for everything, and moved / /boot, /home, /var, /var/tmp and /var/log to their own subvolumes on it.

With XXHash64 checksums, module for which isn't loaded by default either into the initramfs.

For the conversion, I used USB card reader in the Pi 4.
To do stuff on the Pi 1:s card.

hey Reika, while I understand that SignpostMarv is allowed to disregard rules due to his blue name, I'd really appreciate it if you could move this sort of discussion either into the #math-and-meta channel or into the modding discord (xkVJ73E - for your convenience). People usually come into the offtopic channels to have a break of satisfactory talk. I mean this with no offence to you and thank you very much for your consideration ❤️

This is a Satisfactory discord server. The reason for these off topic channels is to allow a small space for people who might want to post something unrelated to the game for discussion. We aren't going to punish anyone who mentions anything game related here but we do have dedicated Satisfactory related channels for most things and would much prefer people post there instead. Based on what I saw the discussion is mostly #math-and-meta related. The channel descriptions haven't been updated in a fairly long while, so I'll probably chat with the team on amending it. In the meantime let's keep the discussions in the right spaces and not argue about it 🙂

#

btw I'm entirely open to the modding discord being suitable for this but seeing as they're not mods I'm not sure if it's any more applicable

glass panther
mortal pike
mortal pike
#

guess it's more a case of is it more accurate to find a space here given it's directly related to the game file or is it more accurate to do it in the modding discord because that's about game adjacent development

glass panther
mortal pike
#

issue with that is that in the same conversation me and you had we swapped between talking about js/python as a whole, general algorithms and application to docs.json about 5 times

#

so going off of it as written by haigen right now we either flood this channel with docs.json talk (which I get why they don't want it) or we flood math and meta occaisionally with mildly unrelated but applicable given context code snippets that they probably don't want

gilded helm
#

If random people weren't chiming in, maybe a thread?

stray badger
#

good idea, please do that

mortal pike
#

Like I thought “hey I kinda want to make a tool, this could be really painful” and then I google to see if anyone else has the data and it turns out the devs included a file all along and then I talk about it here a bit and it turns out that even more tools and processing around it exist, but if there was a channel I would’ve just checked the channel and all of that could be pinned with the occasional discussion about how to use it

gilded helm
#

My admittedly spotty recollection is talking about tool development in math and meta previously. But I'm pretty sure ever since I bought the game, there's discussion around having a channel for non-mod tool development.

mortal pike
#

With 1.0 releasing it would make a lot of sense to add

#

Seeing as there’s a good chance there’s a lot more people who will be joining and at least some of them will be curious about the tools

#

And I imagine some of the tool makers at least will be polishing things up

gilded helm
#

Up to now, I think the issue has been avoided because greeny and anthor just have their own servers.

#

Obviously that's not necessarily an ideal solution to other developers

mortal pike

twin dew
# sterile plinth I use XMP idk if that counts as OC

XMP is OC from CPU memory controllers perspective.
And it is type of OC that the Memtest doesn't detect the problems in all cases.

But at same time, unstable XMP shouldn't cause non-BSOD reboots if the system doesn't have ECC RAM.
So if you are getting those, more probably CPU problem.

#

Unstable RAM can cause data corruption and BSODs, but pure reboots without BSOD need some type of detected uncorrectable HW error in most cases. Power problems being the one exception AFAIK.

I'm kinda dumb with fans and stuff, but I'm trying to play with my CPU fan to see if I can lower my temperature, is there an easy way to do that through Windows? Like, I have the Fan Control software, but the fans have no name, except for the GPU ones (which shows 2 instead of 3 LOL)

#

I have 1 CPU fan and 3 in the front

Edit:I was able to change the speed on the front and back case fans, but can't find nothing on the CPU fan

wanton orchid
#

if it's standard fan configuration you sould be able to also change the cpu fan speed,
but you have to open your computer or see through it to check
close every apps so your pc idle for 5-10min, then you can almost stop every fans you have in control, except the one you are testing that you put at max
then you note which one is which, and the control limits

#

once you've done that you can start tuning

#

on your graphic card, one of the fan is controlled directly on-board, for safety reasons

#

though it depends on the manufacturer, but that is what I commonly seen discussed online

fervent sparrow
twin dew
#

Probably the MB firmware fan control overriding the port?
And would need to be configured or that control disabled in the BIOS.

fervent sparrow
twin dew
#

No, not protected.
Just the normal Windows GUI tool not allowing to delete partitions it doesn't recognize the format for.

edgy hazel

it is lmao

#

the comparison between apt updates between my pi 2b and my pi 5 is insane

#

I'm already done with upgrade on the 5 until the 2 is done with update

twin dew
#

Fortunately that one will not be connected to Internet once finished.

edgy hazel
#

what you're gonna use the 1 for?

twin dew
#

To give my main computer IP via DHCP on management VLAN.
As the Windows functionality for "Alternative IP" doesn't work if the specific interface has never gotten IP via DHCP after last reboot.

#

Tried to use old ADSL router, but that fucker couldn't be configured to understand that it didn't have default route to give.

edgy hazel
#

Ah nice. Yeah my 2 is/was on DNS duty

twin dew
#

First LAN on main computer is connected to LAN.
Second is set to be able to connected direct to WAN/Internet or any of the VLANs via cable panel.

#

In theory that "Alternative IP" would have been easy solution, but with few minute wait after plugging.
But that doesn't work in that specific case and Windows instead configures that "no network config" IP range instead.

#

*ARGH*

visual tree
#

Almost finished with my satellite setup. Just need to replace an old cable and tidy up "spaghetti" behind the dish, replace coax connectors inside the house and cover the conduit entrance at the wall properly

#

There was a small opening in the conduit and wasps made a mud nest which made pulling new cables much harder....

twin dew
#

But how the heck do I make SystemD/UDev make adaptername**:0** "aliases" for same network adapter...
To configure multiple networks that can be enabled and disabled separately...

#

Everywhere the stuff still either talks about ifconfig, or NetworkManager.

#

Yes, IP allows for multiple IPs on one adapter, but I want one or the other without touching config files.

glass panther
#

me: keeps regularly breaking mice
also me: buys mice in bulk to save money
also also me: immediately stops regularly breaking mice

twin dew
#

Need some simple way to switch specific network adapter / .link between two .network files...

#

And those cannot be up at same time, as one will use DHCP-client to get IP, and another will be static IP that will have DHCP server active.

#

But seems I will just do it manually.
As the DHCP config is only needed until configuration is done, and later only if I want to update software, which needs physical network change too.

pure karma
glass panther
twin dew
#

Probably could do it with virtual network adapters etc, but not worth the effort.

sterile plinth
twin dew
#

You said reboots, not BSODs.

#

Crashes it seems.

sterile plinth
twin dew
#

So try without XMP then first?

sterile plinth
twin dew
#

But at that point the OS files can be so corrupted that that is causing BSODs.

#

TRY.
If that helps, then we can look for what works.

sterile plinth
#

If the ram is problematic I may as well buy new one, I just need to be sure it's actually the issue

twin dew
#

Point was to try to find the simple cause.
Is it the RAM or is it not the RAM.

sterile plinth
#

Wouldn't memtest86 with xmp on be better first?

#

Since it also checks if the problem is the ram or not the ram

twin dew
#

Depends.

But you can do that single pass memtest run first.

#

And then if you got errors, another single pass with XMP disabled and RAM on all-auto.

sterile plinth
#

I have 16gb 3600mhz ram on xmp

twin dew
#

Expect about 60 minutes.
Can be faster.
And if couple of slow specialist tests would be disabled the time would drop by third or so.

#

By default the free version tries to run 4 passes.

sterile plinth
#

Alright, I'll try this night.

#

For context I get about one crash a day, but sometimes for example when I'm running my Minecraft server I got 3 crashes in an hour

#

It's not really linked to the intensity of the game, I have played with really taxing shaders or have played other games and It doesn't really crash because of that

#

Funnily enough I would say it conveniently crashes whenever I am NOT playing a game, but rather when I'm watching YouTube or doing something unimportant

#

The few times it does crash during games however half my configs got corrupted

dire igloo
sterile plinth
dire igloo
#

that's the point tho: if the RAM is the issue, you know your options (new RAM or no XMP)

#

and if it isn't the issue you'll know that you have to look elsewhere

sterile plinth
#

What language does that?? It should instantly error if you try to add up two objects (in JavaScript atleast arrays are considered objects)

dire igloo
wanton orchid
#

it's why there is a lengthy topic of knowing the difference between implicit and explicit / strong and weak conversions
that are defined in C++ for instance
JS on the other hand is an implicit conversion freak and don't have strong/explicit conversion concepts

#

So it is doing a LOT of chained/combined conversion misleading shit

#

on C++ that is actually hacked with template sub instanciation

sterile plinth
#

This is why rust is my favorite language, you can create a struct (like a class) and define anything for it

#

You can define addition subtraction bitwise operations

#

Comparison, shallow cloning deep cloning

#

And the most useful of all undoubtedly, you can define equality between classes/objects

wanton orchid
#

(yes that exist in C++)

Comparing two JavaScript objects is probably the most painful thing ever

Those issues refer to performance, not instability. It'll work, but you won't get as many fps. newer titles it performs quite well

Then how is that "2k"?

bold tapir
twin dew
#

2K if used in same way as 4K would mean Full-HD.

bold tapir
#

full hd ultra wide?

twin dew
#

By the resolution? And not try to create new marketing term, which both Full-HD and 4K are.

#

4K as name was just marketing that wanted bigger increase than 1080p to 2160p, so they instead switched to rounded horizontal resolution (3840 to 4k)

bold tapir
#

ah now i know ty

twin dew
#

As in "4K" is 3840x2160, and p means progressive (every line refreshed every refresh), old TV was interlaced (i), where the actual frame rate was half the refresh rate, and every refresh every second line was changed.

bold tapir
bold tapir
twin dew

But the actual question depends somewhat on what you currently have, and what the exact model (given while writing) is.

I cannot check right now, busy repasting main computer CPU.

bold tapir
languid gulch

i usually call 2560x1080 1080UW

bold tapir
twin dew
#

Yeah, old norm was the vertical resolution, progressive or interlaced, and then if not the "then current" default, the aspect ratio.

#

And as i has basically gone away except in special cases, that doesn't really matter anyway that you put the p somewhere.

dire igloo
languid gulch
#

it's dumb all around

twin dew
#

Yes, and that change from vertical to horizontal was just marketing gimmick to make the difference seem bigger.

#

from "1K" of 1920x1080 marketed as 1080p, to "4K" of 3840x2160 (in peoples heads).

#

When the 1080p would be 2K with the new marketing language.

dire igloo
#

I used to believe for ages that 4K was called 4K because it has four times as many pixels as 1080p

#

So QHD would actually fit right in between

twin dew
#

@bold tapir And I wasn't repasting because the old paste needed replacing, but replacing with hopefully PTM7950 phase change material (bought as Thermalright Heilos).

twin dew
#

Which one? I currently have 4 running and 2 off ?D
Ok, the main is self-build Ryzen 7800X3D with 2x32GB of Hynix M-die ECC RAM and Radeon 6600 for the moment as GPU.

#

RAM is currently running at stock 4800MT/s with JEDEC, need to re-set to manual 6000MT/s with very tight timings at some point.

fluid wave
#

What do you use it for

#

Cos that’s a very strong cpu to pair with a 6600

twin dew
#

Works fine for Satisfactory XD.
Just didn't have money to replace the GPU properly yet.

fluid wave
#

Haha ur build seems to just be missing a strong gpu

twin dew
#

Yes? By design?

#

GPUs are easy to replace as separate thing.
Rest of the system, not so much.

wanton orchid
#

phase change thermal paste wtf

fluid wave
#

Fair enough

wanton orchid
#

there is no point

#

I once thought of shrinking thermal paste

#

but pc thermal paste what

twin dew
#

Lenovo for example uses it by default in their higher end gaming laptops.

wanton orchid
#

what have that to do with phase change

twin dew
#

And the stuff has been so hard to get by, as it is made by Honeywell for industrial and space applications and they only sell B2B.

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

then it would run out when liquid

#

what the point then

twin dew
#

Depends on the viscoscity etc.

wanton orchid
#

almost any oil paste is going to be more liquid when hot

#

that very sounds like snake oil marketing to me

twin dew
#

Cannot talk about the exact mechanics, but often give about 3C better temps on CPUs to normal pastes IIRC.
And usually brings GPU hotspots etc. way down.

#

Point is, the stuff actually performs in tests, and doesn't get worse over years in the normally problematic applications like laptops and GPUs.

#

For the real stuff, no idea if the Heilos is the real stuff or not.

#

And the Phase Change Material is the term Honeywell uses. And they also make normal pastes that don't have that term.

#

And I forgot to copy what I wrote first...

twin dew
#

Where as normal pastes are liquid carrier and then for example aluminium powder or like as the heat carrier.

#

Something liquid as carrier for the actual heat transfer powder.

midnight osprey
#

Hey guys. This usb extender. Could it limit the amount of power being passed through it?

wanton orchid
#

yes and no
depends what type

midnight osprey
#

Not concerned about data. Just power.

wanton orchid
#

if hub/switch, yes

midnight osprey
#

I wanna split usb c to fast charge both iPhone and Apple Watch.

twin dew
#

Any such one uses power itself, and spreads what gets left over to the ports.
If not with separate power source.

#

And almost certainly doesn't do USB-C PD.

wanton orchid
#

but it have its own power rating, and should itself handle pd independently for high power

midnight osprey
#

So a waste of money?

twin dew
#

You would need powered USB-hub for fast charging multiple devices.

wanton orchid

I mean if you buy ice cream to fix your car, can you say that ice cream is a waste of money ?

midnight osprey

I’m guessing those are super expensive.

twin dew

Not necessarely that much more expensive.

midnight osprey

Officially USB 2 is 100mA without negotiation, 500mA with negotiation, and USB 3 ups that to 900mA negotiated.
And everything over that isn't USB PD uses one of the multiple fast charge "standards" that are mostly manufacturer specific.

twin dew

It would have a point, if the combined price of the charger and device would be same as before when they were bundled.
Better for the environment even now.

midnight osprey
#

I don't believe they reduced prices

#

I believe they took that on out of convenience, lol

wanton orchid
#

its not

twin dew
#

USB-C with PD for both of those to fast charge.

#

PD being the USB standard higher power charge standard, which is only available for USB-C.

midnight osprey
#

what is PD please?

twin dew
#

USB Power Delivery.

wanton orchid
#

like you are doing, lot of consumer will spam services asking "how do I charge my samsung phone if I dont have a samsung charger"
because they will have to learn the truth :

  • they could have use any all along, because that's the point of having USB standard connection in the first place
midnight osprey
#

how about this?

twin dew
#

Probably has that PD on only one port.

midnight osprey
#

ack, lol

wanton orchid
#

high pd capabilities will come at cost

#

having multiple pd ports is not the general usecase

twin dew
#

But anyways, PD specced charge port can do 1+ of following: 5V, 9V, 15V, 20V at 3A, 20V, 28V, 36V, 48V at 5A.
Usually "up to" one of the ratings with support for all the ones below, but not always.

#

With the necessary negotiation with the charged device on which to use.

midnight osprey
#

I need to skill up with regards to power ratings, lol

wanton orchid
#

pd 3.0+ chargers have also dynamic ranges, which will be negotiated by charged devices

twin dew
#

15W for 5V, 27W for 9V, 45W for 15V, 60W or 100W for 20V etc.

#

As the max.

midnight osprey
#

cool

twin dew
#

But of course you can have 20V and lower current for same wattage as lower rating max is.

#

For example.

wanton orchid
#

if your charger do 20V 3A
it will do 9V 1.5A easy for instance

twin dew
#

If it has the logic to output 9V, some of the early ones didn't.

#

There are USB-C PD chargers out there that can only do 5V and 20V, but not 9V or 15V for example.
Minority, but they have been made.

#

Not sure if that is to spec or not.

wanton orchid
#

it's not in latest standard though ?

#

because that was confusing

twin dew
#

Yup.

wanton orchid
#

anyway pd 3.0 onward is safe in that regard
fully programmable pmic

twin dew
#

And to the general problem.
Even finding USB-C PD power bricks with multiple such outputs has been almost impossible.
Usually it is just either one USB-C PD, or one of those and then more basic USB-A ports...

midnight osprey
#

I can't find high powered chargers for lightning but only USB C

#

would this be OK?

twin dew
#

When I tried to find one that had at least two even 5V 3A 15W USB-C PD ports...

wanton orchid
#

why would you want high power charge over lighting

#

please check that what you want even exist in the first place

midnight osprey
#

oh my gosh, I am so silly, lol

wanton orchid
#

or is even supported by devices

twin dew
#

Don't those devices have UCB-C ports?

dire igloo
midnight osprey
#

the charging cable for the watch is simply a usb c, lol

twin dew
#

Yeah, the lightning-port Apple devices didn't use USB PD.

midnight osprey
#

iphoines max charging rate appears to be 27w

#

watches max 20w

twin dew
#

So both can do 9V, but will charge with 5V too, just limited to 15W at that.

wanton orchid
#

most phone and similar will support 15W 5V 3A

twin dew
#

For the older PD chargers.

midnight osprey
#

yeah, if I am spending so much on a watch that needs a charge every few days I want it as fast as possible, like when I in the shower, lol

wanton orchid
#

why just use one pd then

#

you can connect whatever you want else when the watch is charged

#

btw fun fact

midnight osprey
#

my initial hope was to simply use that port on the back of my monitor, but I wouldn't want to be switching it out all the time

wanton orchid
#

do you know what is the absolute ceiling of standard M.2 ports supported power through ?

twin dew
#

USB-C extension cord?

midnight osprey
#

good call

#

clearly my mind is fried today, lol

#

how does cable length affect power throughput?

wanton orchid
#

2m is fine usually, if you have a fully featured cable

#

cable rating are indicated on the cable description

twin dew
#

Depends on the cable quality basically.
How thick conductors it uses for the power pins.

wanton orchid
#

you can easily find pd 100W ones for instance

midnight osprey
#

cool

#

I will search now

midnight osprey
#

wow, cheap

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

50V 0.5A per pin

#

though I may have calculate that wrong, should devide by 2

#

837.5W

twin dew
#

And the voltage isn't 50V, 3.3V is the norm that is used.

wanton orchid
#

still

midnight osprey
#

so now I just need an adaptor for this end

wanton orchid
midnight osprey
#

that doesn't slow down power any lower than 20w

wanton orchid
#

interfaces can only provides ~10W max usually

midnight osprey
#

feck

#

double feck, lol

wanton orchid
twin dew
#

Yes, if you used the connector for something different than the normal usage, of course you can then pump up the voltage.
But in actual usage form MB, then there will be nine 3.3V power pins on M-key slot.
Five for B-key.

midnight osprey
#

the first cable I found was simpy a regular usb to usb

#

what I really needed was male to female

wanton orchid
midnight osprey
#

is this ok?

wanton orchid

its juste I was thinking about it as we were talking about power rating

twin dew
#

So theoretical 40.5W for normal M.2 M-key SSD slot.

wanton orchid

that's more than I thought

wanton orchid

glass panther
#

anyone know of free storage services with javascript sdks for apis that actually work in the browser? (github auth doesn't want to work in the browser because CORS + the whole client secret thing)

twin dew
#

But anyways on the Heilos.
Possibly tiny bit better than the old paste at 100% fans, but not controlled enough to say more.
And the heat load is just too low on 7800X3D at full tilt.
But that it is at least the same is ok for now, I can use some of the second package for the chipset and 10G lan chips on the server MB.

#

Instead of using Carbonaut.

#

NH-U14S with single default fan, with offset mount.

#

CCD idle temps are down couple of degrees, IOD temps are down about 5C, when fans are back on Auto: Silent.
But might be that the case internal temp hasn't risen yet to same level.
Case input air is now little hotter than before, but MB temp sensor is cooler than in the pre-change idle measurement.

#

Ah, no, those 5C down are the MB provided VRM temps via SVI3.
So that matches the Motherboard being cooler for the moment.
So the temp difference at idle was about the case internal air being different temperature after the 100% fan time.

#

So somewhat as expected, no significant differences on good desktop CPU mount vs. normal good paste with "optimized" application thickness.
Optimized as in doing mounting tests with the specific combo and seeing the minimum amount of paste you can use before there being too little, spread evenly, resulting in thinner paste layer than the normal "extra will just be pushed out" method.

And I fell in the hole of trying to find out how to relay mDNS or other similar multicast between subnets on the router...

#

Without using Avahi.

#

And as Avahi is the most common option for mDNS in any form on Linux, it is pretty hard to find the other options.

#

Well, really only have to get Windows File Sharing to work without IPs between two subnets.
Need to find "right" solution for the name resolution for that, and not the depricated WINS.

twin dew
#

But seems that general multicast relay can be done with MACVLAN virtual network devices in a bridge with suitable firewall rules.
And that also should give me the thing I wanted with the Pi 1, two interfaces to same physical interface so I can have two easy network setups, one as default and another as manual enable.

#

Or with IPVLAN devices for the Pi at least.

twin dew
#

Basically on the Pi I need something to replace the depricated IP Aliasing (eth0, eth0:0, eth0:1 etc. for same physical interface).

#

Because I want two switchable network configs for one physical interface, without using Network Manager or like, just with SystemD NetworkD.
