pure karma
#

yea they show up on the home page every once in a while

gilded helm
#

I once made a solid effort years ago (2019 or earlier) to train Youtube's algorithm but it was pointless. I couldn't get rid of the random suggestions.

#

It's especially glaring because it used to be so good before it started focusing on monetized content and hoping you get addicted to the irrelevant crap they try to show.

pure karma
#

it was good until recommendations started being for watch % over watch time

#

the weird thing is streams still use the old system

glass panther
#

youtube product manager: "people aren't reading this shit"
also youtube product manager: "imma make people read this shit"

wooden vessel
#

My “home page” is subscriptions. You can filter to just videos.

cobalt pond
#

man what more do i need on my laptop to run this game better? it has a 4060 but the game is taking up a lot of it still even in just the home screen

pure karma
#

lower the graphics or stop ussing a laptop really

#

also the game is generally mostly cpu limited

cobalt pond
#

my cpu was fine

pure karma
#

overall ussage and individual ussage are two difrent things

cobalt pond
#

ram fine too i have 32 gigs

pure karma
#

just because the overall is 15% ussage dosent mean all the cores are at 15%

cobalt pond
#

how do u see all that?

#

i usually look at task manager for my stuff

pure karma
#

ods are at laptop cpu clock speeds you will end up single core bottlenecked fairly hard

cobalt pond
#

well how do i fix that

#

because my laptop is a beast for other games

#

just this game is killing it

pure karma
#

task manager over exagerates and dosent give actual numbers its essentially predicting stuff a lot of the time

cobalt pond
#

ah k

pure karma
#

i gets the job done but take it whit a grain of salt

gilded helm
#

Games that demand a lot from both CPU and GPU tend to be way worse on laptops for this reason.

pure karma
#

yea disable stuff like lumen if you have it on and keeps render distance maybe low if you want to actually keep the rest high

cobalt pond
#

ah k

#

could i somewhat fix this by upgrading my cpu?

pure karma
pure karma
#

well you can but like i dont think there is any scenario where it would be worth it

cobalt pond
#

ill have to check if it is socketed or not

gilded helm
#

Even if you could upgrade your CPU, it's an overall power management issue most likely. If your CPU is limited to 25W during gaming, you'd need to specifically upgrade to a CPU that has really good 25W performance.

cobalt pond
#

its probably not but oh well

pure karma
#

yea i dont think i have ever seen a socketed laptop cpu

cobalt pond
gilded helm
#

A handful exist, but you need to specifically seek them out, anyone who has one would know.

cobalt pond
#

i have a gigabyte laptop... i doubt they do it but its worth it to check ig

pure karma
#

gigabyte stuff is generally solid for the price other than there GPU mounts there stuff is generally solid

#

but i doubt anyone is still making socketed cpu's for laptops

gilded helm
#

Even newer Eurocomm machines have dropped socketed CPUs I think?

cobalt pond
gilded helm
#

There's probably a Gigabyte discord out there, or other user community. Check there for info. In Lenovo Discords we often don't advise repasting because stock is actually good enough that most people won't do better unless they're good at getting mounting prerssure and liquid metal application just right.

cobalt pond
#

alright will do

charred pewter
#

so... for the past few days when i go to 'shutdown' my pc... windows pops up this red exception dialog right before it shuts off ... goes to quick i cant tell what its saying or whats doing it (I suspect a recent windows update) .... how or is there somewhere that an exception error would be logged?

#

event viewer ... seems its something with explorer.exe throwing a popup about something not being able to be written, then it closes out quick

#

ok, apparently its something to do with a recent windows 11 update and having an xbox controller plugged in ... if i unplug the controller and reboot (error is thrown), a second and third reboot no errors so long as i keep the controller unplugged

#

found a post about it ... microsoft is aware and say "it wont harm anything, ignore it" ...

wooden vessel
wooden vessel
#

use whatever slow mo it may provide

cobalt pond
#

would that impact it that much?

wooden vessel
#

i don't know what impact you're observing. what i wrote means the screen runs at full frame rate. how complex is the world you're in and what frame rate / energy profile do you shoot for? a 4060 laptop chip isn't the best thing on the planet but it's not nothing, 80 fps homescreen and well above that when just landed in the world is what i'd expect. cap frame rate to 60 or 30 and your fans should slow down

#

in the amd world we routinely undervolt our GPU's to use less energy so that the gpu throttles less. same should be true for nvidia i think. 99% usage with a 1600 clock is super odd

#

i murdered the last GPU i redid the paste on, but if you run your machine hard you'll know if you should do it.

pure karma
#

so 70-80 should be your framerate in a empty world esentially

#

its practically a free benchmark to get a idea of your performance built in

cobalt pond
#

im surprised this isnt default

pure karma
#

more resource efficient but its generally less stable in a lot of games

cobalt pond
#

its down from 80-99% all the way to 40%

#

like DAMN

cobalt pond
#

with the gzdoom client ofc

gilded helm
#

You should also undervolt your GPU if you can. And even lower its power target. You might get better overall performance by lowering the power your GPU gets, to increase the available CPU power.

wanton orchid
#

what

wanton orchid
jagged snow
#

On a lot of laptops they do share a power budget

#

Maybe even on most

pure karma
#

i could defedently see a shared power amount being more likely especially in a scenario where a didicated gpu is involved

wanton orchid
#

cooling is directly related though

sharp oasis
#

I need some like not so legal advise.

So I agreed to a temporary work period of two days 10am till 6pm.
Assuming that she was going to pay me after the two days.
It ends up that she wants me to work more and won't pay me the pay that I agreed to. I have no clue what I can do about it rn.

#

She decided that I'm a full employee (against what I agreed) and will be paid payroll wise by end of fucking july

wanton orchid
#

the power budget you are talking about does not make them directly related
it just basically is dynamic power state management
it's not things like uBurst ceiling

pure karma
#

when someone bullshits you bullshit them until they cant bullshit no more

gilded helm
#

I don't really have anything to add to how I already explained it. If a laptop has a 200W power limit and the GPU is sucking up 150W, it might be better to shift some of that to the CPU if you can.

sharp oasis
#

This is what I agreed to

pure karma
#

well the grandmother segment is likely why

#

she likely wants to cheap out and by stretching the work time hopping she can get away whit paying you less than agreed because you just wont care at that point

wanton orchid
#

she is probably trying to scam you

#

don't get emotional
as she is actively trying to exploit that she is your grandmother for not respecting their agreement without much drawback

sharp oasis
#

I might take this to small claims court.

pure karma
#

i feel like odds are likely it would be denied because "a text isn't proof of agreement" or something around thoes lines but it could be worth a shot if your that serious about it

sharp oasis
#

So there are witnesses that I performed the work

#

So it's not just the text

#

And there's my logged hours

pure karma
#

true but if the wage agreement isn't good enough proof than yea you worked but for 0$

#

unless you signed an actual contract

wanton orchid
#

family pay roll for official work
that can't work legally what ?

sharp oasis
#

There is also this

#

So she agreed herself to pay me the base rate she pays

#

$15/hr

#

Plus travel charges

wanton orchid
#

"like a real person"
ahah so in your grandmother's head you are not a real person ?

sharp oasis
#

Cus I was driving in from 45km away for each shift

sharp oasis
#

I'm no longer student so I get paid "like a real person"

wanton orchid
#

yet a student is still a real person

sharp oasis
#

Student wage is $13.50/hr vs min is at $15/hr

pure karma
#

the issue i see here is that because you never signed any legal contracts you woudl likely run into the problem that you nerver actually worked in the eye of the law so minimum wage/income tax wouldent apply because it wasent 'Legal work" and so on.....

sharp oasis
#

I was signing takes and deductions at my last shift

#

But because she was not running payroll

#

I didn't see any reason to sign them yet

wanton orchid
#

or it is faulty law

languid gulch
#

lol

sharp oasis
#

So if everything went as I agreed.

#

I'd be signing my T4 and going home with. A cheque

languid gulch
#

people have been fighting for $15/hr for so long that the minimum living wage (survival without tax deductions) is $35/hr

sharp oasis
#

But she attempted to extend my work period without me explicitly agreeing to such

#

And so far I am unpaid for the 17hrs of labor

#

That I provided to her

wanton orchid
#

but maybe you're not so much a real person so it's ok you know

sharp oasis
#

Real

sharp oasis
#

I literally cannot afford a lawyer

wanton orchid
#

In some laws text is also defining agreement legally
but I don't know the law where you live

#

(specifically to prevent these kind of abuses)

languid gulch
#

also don't let anyone pull the "but we're family" BS. if that were true then paying a family member adequately for their time & work should be even less of a problem

wanton orchid
#

^^^^^^

#

that's what I meant by not getting emotional

languid gulch
#

and i do hate to say that, but i've seen and experienced more than enough familial extorting like that

wanton orchid
#

it's not unknown that there is more social pressure inside family than elsewhere (because you can't fully say goodbye to it)
and it's officially a main environment for abuses

languid gulch
#

which makes it an excellent arena for abusers

wanton orchid
#

but I mean it's known

#

authority doing their job have huge statistics on these

sharp oasis
#

Yeah I'll probably go down to the local RCMP station they might have a few things they could help me with cus lawyers are fucking expensive and I didn't get paid so I can't get one

wanton orchid
#

don't get your knee shaking because it's your grandma
if your own family is actively destroying you
you must unfortunately seek to get away from it

sharp oasis
#

Oh I'm not scared by her. After the abuse she's pulled on me and my parents and my sister. I want a little bit of vengeance to be very honest. But I also want my money really.

#

Our grandfather died a year back she is still actively delaying the distribution of his estate

#

He divorced her like decades ago

wanton orchid
#

(and btw that's exactly why the current social situation is so bad,
because instead of getting help from family, people get fuck both ways, which reduces incentives from employers to be careful)

#

it's sad that I could sense it at your first two messages
but it is what it is
don't try to hide it to yourself
you'll only make it easier for people abusing you

sharp oasis
#

Oh I know.

#

I want to fucking take this and make a stink about it as I'm tired of her treating me like a doormat

#

Cohen do this, Cohen go use your fuel and your car to get us food, Cohen you aren't working hard enough (I literally took a 2.5min break as I haven't stopped working all day)
Cohen get off your phone (my own fucking break to eat something)

#

There are no scheduled breaks, and any downtime is frowned upon

wanton orchid
#

next time people in your family is asking you for official work
ask for the actual contract to sign and ask for the copies

sharp oasis
#

Oh absolutely

#

And that time I'll be charging my own fucking rate

#

And if she doesn't agree to it I don't have to work for her

wanton orchid
#

^

#

if she is ok with not being a bitch then she'll be ok with signing

#

no fakes under law

#

btw that's the classical abuser signature : getting angry because you are asking for simple guarantees that shouldn't be any problem or difficulty if they were completely honest in the first place

#

and then trying to making it look like you are the one being offensive
just by asking basic simple stuff that's no problem at all

#

(and yes work paper for official work is basic simple stuff, there is no slavery under family agreement in EU or US, official work hours -> official worker paper, otherwise it's business mismanagement under the law)

#

though I don't know much outside EU

sharp oasis
#

So I will see if I can get a consult with a lawyer

#

Get a professional opinion.

#

So far I'm going to not sign anything

#

As I haven't.

#

And demand that I'm paid.

wanton orchid
#

insist on what have been already explicitly agreed upon

#

that's why text is always better

#

she can't escape what she already said explicitly
without also being contradicting herself (for instance if "she was not fully awake at that time" then why not consider "she is not fully awake" right fucking now, be real)

sharp oasis
#

Can in Canadian law it's considered evidence if it's relevant

wanton orchid
#

the tips is always to deflect on air conversation to WRITTEN agreement or else consider it's null

#

at any point if being right is being "mean"
then you are not the one who's fucking around

sharp oasis
mortal pike
#

Texts less so but they can hold up

twin dew
#

Even verbal agreements are legal agreements, just that proving that one was done is the painful step.

Need to find USB enclosure for 3.5" SATA drive, that actually allows heat transfer from the drive to the enclosure...
Basically everything today seems to be slide in type, which realistically doesn't allow for much of that.

#

Even models that try to look heatsinky on the outside.

charred pewter
#

right, all plastic and cheap crap ... nothing actually provides heat transfer (some cases even make overheating worse!)

twin dew
#

Lot of extruded aluminum outsides, but with slide in from one end.

#

So no way to put any thermal pads or like in there to actually transfer heat.

charred pewter
#

you may have to end up with just getting one that has a decent controller (the hookup part/board) ... and then dismantling it and make a case yourself :/

twin dew
#

Can get adapters without enclosure.

charred pewter
#

right all slide-ins by design dont really do any heatsink/transfer since it ... slides in ... lol

#

need a clamshell model, but i have not seen any made from metal

twin dew
#

Probably something like this and mod the top install to not be slide on:
That specific thing is sold under many labels.

charred pewter
#

right, take the top off, then slap one of these on the ssd

twin dew
#

Intended for HDD.

charred pewter
#

"Thin Cooling Pad for 2.5In SSD Heatsink 100x70mm" ? ... most likely scam

twin dew
#

Some 2+TB Seagate Skyhawk probably.

charred pewter
#

looks crappy

#

kind of stupid title ... NVMe SSD ?

charred pewter
#

i thought all nvme ssd were the thin chip style that stick in the motherboard

twin dew
#

No, U.2 and like are a thing.
Just not common.

#

Uncommon in consumer space, common in server space.

charred pewter
#

seems other people have asked for what you are looking for, and coming up short too

#

must not be a high demand to passively cool an external ssd ?

#

without jury rigging something out of parts

twin dew
#

When you have stuff like this:

#

Trying to look like they would cool the drive, but there is no real path for the heat from the drive to the external surface.

#

"Efficient cooling"

charred pewter
#

lol

#

i AM finding ones ... but they only take the stick nvme inside lol

#

doh

twin dew
#

But basically style has taken over.
With one part extruded aluminum (or plastic) external housings.
Instead of two part clamshells which would be more expensive to manufacture.

charred pewter
#

right ... 'oh its a metal case!' ... but doesnt have any real contact with the drive... so its basically just a case that isnt easily crushed when some dumbass steps on it

#

heh, if only this came in ssd 2.5 style

twin dew
#

Again, need it for 3.5" HDD.

charred pewter
#

3.5 hdd ?? wait ... here i thought you were looking for 2.5 ssd 😦

#

my brain fried on "Need to find USB enclosure for 3.5" SATA drive"

#

somehow read that as "2.5" SSD drive" ... 🤦

twin dew
#

Probably going to get this one, and then put some thermal stuff between the adapter plates and the drive, and then on the rails.

charred pewter
#

NOW i know why you want it passively cooled!!!!!

twin dew
#

And when that thing is supposed to constantly write at 10Mbit/s for years, in hotter than normal room temperature space, with no active cooling.

charred pewter
#

i had an old enclosure from Calvary, which had a tiny fan in it to suck air through the metal case .... it was dumb, noisy, and ultimately a bad controller in it

twin dew
#

Fan is no-go for intended use.
Going to go with that Pi 4 I specced and ordered heat sinks for.

charred pewter
#

ah

#

hmm, changing searches to 3.5 sata ..... its either slim cheapy slide in enclosure, or giant raid/nas boxes of doom ...

twin dew
#

And in a pinch, I can just saw the enclosure in two and make it into DIY clamshell with some ghetto solution to keep the removed part attached.

charred pewter
#

lol what the bloody hell is THIS bastardchild device ?!

#

"ORICO 2.5/3.5 inch SATA/M.2 NVMe SATA SSD Enclosure with 12-in-1 USB C Docking Station with HDMI USB-C hub 10Gbps, 4K@60Hz, 100W PD, Ethernet, Card Readers"

#

good grief ! im intrigued though

twin dew
charred pewter
#

yup

twin dew
charred pewter
#

yup .... i mean, its a neat idea ... and would actually replace my gaggle of crap i hang off my laptop... including a usb drive i use for backups lol

#

it even has an ethernet port in the hub

#

not many reviews on it on amazon ... one guy trying to put a ssd in place of the hdd and complaining it doesnt support trim and ssd speeds 😉

twin dew
#

Review for document shredder:
Mechanism works fine but the product is just cheap plastic, 1 star!

#

That was only review for shredder I recommended.

charred pewter
#

hahah

twin dew
#

Why would the waste container or the outer shell need to be anything but plastic?

charred pewter
#

i get a kick out of some reviews sometimes ...

twin dew
#

For low end "personal" one.

charred pewter
#

right ... the shredder i got (some bonsai) ... its a solid unit and works great... but people complained the 'window on the bucket gets clouded up and you cant see the waste' ...

twin dew
#

With 12L waste container.

charred pewter
#

exactly ... DUST ... cause its SHREDDING GOOD

#

"i want clean shred... no dust!"

#

i want a shredder which turns it to pulp .... lol

twin dew
#

For P4 shredders.

charred pewter
#

omg that window will get clouded up! 😄

twin dew
#

No "2 minutes use, 60 minutes waiting", but 8 minutes use, 30 minutes waiting.

charred pewter
#

ah, overheating issues

#

ive not gotten mine to heat cycle yet... but i dont shred for like a half hour

twin dew
#

Yeah, most of the cheap ones are made expecting that the user shreds few documents every day, all the time.
And not for the initial "destroy last 10 years documents".

charred pewter
#

i got the 8-sheet micro cut ... cause i wanted more security over my 6 sheet cross cut i had

#

hahahah yes

twin dew
#

But when you are able to choose, better to go with the one that can actually cool itself somewhat.

charred pewter
#

two reems of paper to shred 😄

edgy hazel
#

Wait y'all buy your shredders new and not from an office liquidation?

charred pewter
#

nope! ... i buy new crap that lasts shorter than old crap

twin dew
#

Not lot of opportunities for things like that in Finland that I know off.

#

The stores that might buy and resell don't really advertise anywhere.
Not what they have, or even that they exist.

#

As in only want to do B2B, not B2C.

charred pewter
#

ive never looked here, tbh .... i just cant be bothered

#

i hate going out as is... but to go out and mill around a bunch of people and fight for product in an auction? naw

twin dew
#

Raw price from Farnell would have been 118.11e, will need to pay 147.00e for the same through the local store.
But I expect that much of that is the Pi 4 going up to the standard Finnish retail price, even when I had been browsing Farnells Finnish subversion.

charred pewter
#

maybe if i needed some $2000 piece of equipment that you can nab for the cheap at one of those ....

twin dew
#

Tried to look if I could have gotten the stuff via Mouser, but just couldn't replace the heatsinks easy, as the ones they stocked didn't include same stuff.
And Elfa Diselectric in turn wouldn't have had the Pi, the car stuff or suitable switch (had tried to find the car stuff and switch to include in earlier Elfa order).

sharp oasis
edgy hazel
#

aaaand all servers openssh is updated

twin dew
#

Were any even using the GSSAPI?

edgy hazel
#

huh? I patched against the grace timeout exploit

twin dew
#

The old version at least only worked if GSSAPI was in use.

#

Need to find real CVE for the new one, as the OpenSSH own disclosure is just crappy...

#

Ok, the current CVE text is the same as everyone has been copying without listing the source.

#

Because most of the details are still under wraps.

twin dew
#

CVE-2006-5051 Detail:

Signal handler race condition in OpenSSH before 4.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash), and possibly execute arbitrary code if GSSAPI authentication is enabled, via unspecified vectors that lead to a double-free.

#

Which is the one that every source says this is regression back to.

#

So either the old CVE actually didn't need GSSAPI, or the new one isn't pure regression.

#

But seems from that qualys text, that it is pure regression, and the old CVE description is wrong?

#

Yeah, "Theory, take one" part talks about that specific point.

soft bloom

Ubuntu

soft bloom
#

or maybe i'm of wrong age to be surprised to see it still being used

jagged snow
#

Server 2008 most likely

twin dew
#

Not going to even try when I have no idea when the specific one was created.
Because it almost certainly uses the one that was the current or one before when it was put into production.

soft bloom
#

thankfully its not thaaat old

soft bloom
jagged snow
#

Are you sure it's not server 2003?

#

That seems far more likely and it has the XP interface

mortal pike
#

a surprising amount of important stuff runs on XP still tbh

soft bloom
#

i wonder if it means that it has bugs of same age

twin dew
#

XP had specific version for that kind of use.

soft bloom
jagged snow
#

So no, interesting

#

But anyways, a lot of the municpal water supply stuff I work with still runs on server '03 or '08

twin dew
#

XP Embedded was supported until january 2016.

soft bloom
#

so much water flowed since then

twin dew
#

And Windows Embedded Compact 2013 was supported until October 2023.

#

Ok, that was the last Windows CE, not Direct XP based.

#

Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 was still XP based and had the support end in April 2019, as last XP based Windows version.

#

And the Windows Embedded Standard 2009.

#

Got replaced by Windows Embedded 7, then 8 and 8.1.
Then to various Windows 10 based Windows IoT Enterprises.
All which are still in support.

#

Latest which seems to be Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, which will have support until January 2032.

#

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise versions also seem to exist, but have shorter support periods.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Because those are meant for embedded systems, some of which still use for example DOS to this day.

#

Because the machine they control has been in use since 80s.

#

And IIRC I just read that MS is still selling new lisences for that last XP Embedded (2009) version until 2026, but cannot refind it.

#

No it was for sale until early this year, and it was the Embedded 7 that will be for sale until 2026, even though the support already ended.

#

That 10 IoT LTSC 2021 will be for sale until near end of 2031.

maiden coyote
#

most of those machines on are on networks that have no access to the outside, or are behind a firewall thats a VPN client that connects only to the controlling server

twin dew
#

Basically all the known hacks on ATMs etc. have been physical access things.

maiden coyote
#

It's less so how old and hackable the old systems are and more the kinds of firewall/network they're behind.

#

Hospitals use alot of windows xp stuff.

twin dew
#

Because the equipment manufacturers don't bother to upgrade the OSs for the access machines for their machines.

#

Or make their programs support newer OSes so that the local IT could upgrade.

#

And after you buy diagnostic machine that costs from hundreds of thousands to millions, you cannot just switch it because the maker is ass on the OS support front.

maiden coyote
#

Quite a bit of those systems have the If it works why fix it mentally.

It's whatever the manufacturer had available currently to make it work, and when you've got a multimillion dollar mri machine, having it down because of an "update" Isn't really acceptable.

Not exactly but yes.
A phobia is a pathological fear - and just like any other medical condition it can show different symptoms.

Yes, the word phobia is overused in modern language, watering down its original meaning - that goes for fears too btw. Some people think that it's arachnophobia when they see a spider and want it gone.

Anyways, language changes and it's just petty to cling onto supposed meanings in a context where the intended meaning is clear.

At least the Thermalright Heilos is cut from same stuff as the PTM7950 LTT sells.
White and transparent non-colored films, when the old PTM7950 pics have blueish instead of white film.

But it is crudely cut with machine from larger roll or like, having one of the original sides and three cut sides.

#

And then packaged for retail.

twin dew
#

@pastel lion It doesn't matter if soldering the plug or the socket, both have usually the same solder tab lengths.

pastel lion
twin dew
#

Ah, PCB version.

#

So tip is the one farthest away from the insert hole, ground is the closest.
Easy to measure with multimeter.

twin dew
#

Possible power feed is the middle instead of second channel.

#

Signal on tip, power on ring, ground on base.

pastel lion
#

which one are we talking about again

twin dew
#

The smaller one for the which is which talk.
For the other cannot tell from the pics easily.

pastel lion
#

hold on

#

please, please tell me that the small socket has microphone support

#

aka all four pins, left, right ground and mic

twin dew
#

Normal mics use just 2 or 3 pins.
The fourth pin is only with ones that combine both mic and headphones, like phones etc.

#

So what are you actually trying to do?

#

What kind of mic do you need to connect.
And what is the mic plug going to be connecting to with the connectors?

#

You are trying to solder a cable to the female sockets?
Or something else?

#

Because those sockets are for PCB mount, not cable.

pastel lion
#

oh it's not a mic

#

it's a bass

#

hold on a minute

twin dew
#

So almost certainly uses just 2 pins.

#

Tip and base, ring(s) not used.

#

Just signal and ground.

#

Leave the https:// off

pastel lion
#

it's the scheme I'm following, wanna put the big (instrumental jack) on the left, and the small one on the right

#

and then connect it to my laptop's combined input via a splitter

#

1 male 2 female connectors, that kinda thing

#

and an aux cable for the scheme - splitter connection

twin dew
#

And as the scheme shows, only 2 pins for both in there.
Tip for signal, base for ground.

For 4-pin inputs, ground is second ring (next to base), mic is base.
But you don't have 4-pin 3.5mm socket, only 3-pin.

#

So for the 6.3mm one, you would need to check which leg seems to be connected to the contact closest to the entrance for the plug (ground).
And which is the farthest to entrance and closest to the legs (tip).
And leave the middle one unconnected.

For the 3.5mm, you would need another part to be able to use 4-pin to 4-pin cable to output to anything.

pastel lion
#

I need to kill an electronics store employee real quick

twin dew
#

The 3-pin is the most commonly used one.
If you didn't specify exactly enough.
The 4-pin is basically only used on phones and laptops.

pastel lion
twin dew
#

And that can easily be understood to mean 2 or 3 pin variant, which is what is used for mics outside those two niches.

pastel lion
#

@twin dew can I cut an aux cable and just solder it directly?

#

cus the 3pin connector costed me 6BYN, while the 4 pin one costs 33

#

divide by 3.3 to get USD price

twin dew
#

Yes, you can just cut any cable with right number of contacts and solder that direct.
Just need to find what conductor is what somehow.

#

Usually easily done with multimeter or like, but if you don't have one, then it can get harder.

twin dew
#

The cable might use standard colors, or might not.
And cannot know what colors there are before cutting it.

#

And even if the wires are the standard ones or close, cannot know if they are actually used in that way or not.

pastel lion
#

I guess I'll buy the expensive connector then

So no testing the Pi 4 right now.

#

CPU sink fits tine, same for the USB one.
One memory goes right on too, but the other one needs cuts for the two capacitors.
And the one for LAN chip also needs tiny cut at one corner for the largest capacitor.

#

The stupid thing about the adapter is that after I picked up the Pi, I went and shopped in two stores that would have had such adapter for sale.

edgy hazel
#

I'm fucked too if I ever had to connect directly to my Pi. I also have no mini HDMI or whatever the pi 5 uses

twin dew

And seems they now have Bookworm even for Pi 1.
So I can safely overwrite the card I have for the Pi 1, do the testing, attach the heatsinks, test again.
And leave the Pi 4 waiting for me to buy the right memory card for it.

#

Well, more for me to buy new memory card for my dashcam and repurpose the one from that to the Pi 4.
64GB Samsung Endurance card.

edgy hazel
#

Can't the pi4 already boot from USB out of the box? Or is that only a 5 thing?

twin dew
#

Pi 5 only IIRC.
Need the firmware on SDCard as minimum for Pi 4 and before.

#

The OS can be on USB.
But don't have the USB HDD yet either.
And easier to reuse the SDCard than muck around with USB stuff.

edgy hazel
#

True and USB sticks tend to get hot hot

#

Trust me lol

twin dew
#

Linux logs too much by default.

#

For the log files to live on USB stick or most SD Cards.

#

Wear the FLASH way too fast with that.

edgy hazel
#

I think raspian has reduced that by default tho

#

Otherwise they'd burn through SD cards

twin dew
#

Wasn't the case for the Debian 11 based Raspberry Pi OS I installed for the Pi 1.
SystemD journal was still being saved on the normal location and wasn't temporal by default etc.

#

IIRC.

#

Ok, seems Pi 4 with later firmware can boot from USB without SDCard?

#

Or at least once booted once with SDCard with specific bootloader config to trigger that.

#

Pi 4 Model B, 400, Compute 4, 4S and Pi 5 are the ones where the USB boot is available.
So again wrong memory that it was Pi 5 only.
Just something that got added to Pi 4 after launch.

#

WLAN njet stable.

#

No, the WLAN connection is ok.
Connected to the AP at xx:44 and has been connected since then.
Just that the connection from my computer failed multiple times?
While my computer could still ping another computer, it couldn't ping or connect with SSH to the Pi.

#

But seems that installing the Raspberry Pi OS without graphical desktop broke something related to network functionality, as the log contains stuff about not finding dbus-org.freedesktop.network1.service.

#

Still configured to use specific GUI tools.

#

Which aren't available.

#

systemd-resolved not installed.

#

Debian only split that to separate package during Bookworm in late 2022.

#

And might only have made to Bookworm from unstable and testing in 2023.

twin dew
#

But something weird going with the WLAN.
The base connection stays up with the AP, but the actual connectivity comes and goes.
LAN works fine.

#

As expected, I need to tear down some stuff being used by default for the networking, like the NetworkManager, instead of SystemD.NetworkD.
But need local display for doing that.

#

Weird thing is that I'm, pinging the WLAN IP with two different computers, and the "Request timed out" don't happen at same time.

#

But seems to be something weird on my AP, as not getting the problems when both sides aren't WLAN connected...

#

Yeah, I have some major config issue for WLAN to WLAN traffic.
Which I haven't used before.
Need to reset the AP to defaults and reconfigure it less.

#

Used that now because I have firewall blocking most traffic between WLAN VLAN and LAN VLAN, including SSH.

#

But now for some weird reason I cannot connect with SSH from LAN to WLAN Pi4, even when I should have firewall rules allowing for that...

#

And for internal-to-internal it should reject, not block.
So is there some firewall/block in the Pi4 default config?

#

It didn't have any NFTables rules.

#

So to main firewall rules debugging...

#

Seems to only been that the Pi didn't like being on two networks at same time.

#

But need to move it to NetworkD anyways.
So I will need that HDMI adapter to get local control, because fuckups without networking is to be expected.

Well, not best, but good way.

But seems I will probably need to use separate Linux computer with the memory card reader.

At least if I cannot find option for it to do stuff on the first boot of the created card.

edgy hazel
night girder
#

first HP cartridge I could find, also black: 33 euro and can print 240 pages in black.

#

0.045 euro per page (brother) vs 0.137 euro per page (hp). So, more expensive, but more pages 🙂 And per page, cheaper.

#

Now take this all with a grain of salt, the data comes from a vendor, I don't know what quality they used when printing etc. Higher quality uses more ink etc.

#

I read someone claiming the HP one can only print 80 pages. Not sure if that's true 🤔 Wouldn't surprise me both vendors "boost" the pages to more than what it is.

twin dew
#

There is now standardized test sheets for grayscale and color.

But the cartridges that come with the printer are way underfilled by design, often to somewhere around 10% page count compared to the smallest replacement.

#

But for full-page color printing, the fill of the test is way under.
The grayscale is around 5% fill IIRC, and the color might have been around 10-15%.

#

So the numbers should be comparable between printers and vendors.
But aren't 1:1 to actual usage.

edgy hazel
#

Color laser printer gang here.
My printing costs for black&white/greyscale should be around 0.032€ per sheet, including the waste toner container at 30k pages and imaging units at 48k pages.
Doesn't include the paper.

And I don't believe I will ever have to replace the imaging units in actuality.
And probably don't need to ever replace the waste toner container.

ISO Test Reports
In June 2004, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) announced yield testing and reporting standards for Monochrome Xerographic Engines under ISO/IEC 19752. In December 2006, yield testing and reporting standards for Color Xerographic Engines were also announced under ISO/IEC 19798 and ISO/IEC 24711. These standards ensure that toner or ink yield reporting by different manufacturers will adhere to the same rigorous testing process, making yields comparable across different products.

For the heatsinks for Pi4 I mean.

#

As comparison:

#

Which one is more likely to not throttle as passive if put into 40-50C air temperature situation?

#

Ok, likely the placement will not be anywhere near that, but I was making sure.
So used 16-20e on the heatsinks and about 10e on the excessive sized 300x300 thermal tape sheet.

#

But I need to clear the project sidetable before continuing...

Putting it behind the fridge with USB connected HDD to store surveillance camera footage.

#

So right next to the fridges compressor loop warm/hot cooling coils.

#

Which is why I went with Pi 4, to get AC WLAN, but still cheaper and easier to cool than the Pi 5.

#

Pi 4 seems to be 1x1, so 433Mbit/s max theoretical, no idea about Pi 5.
But as the need is only for constant 10Mbit/s, that doesn't matter that much.

#

Seems to be the same, with Pi 5 giving much more performance up close to the AP, but losing performance with range while Pi 4 keeps up to same speed, with eventually Pi 5 dropping below the Pi 4.
So Pi 4 seems to have better RF hardware, but not enough bus bandwidth, CPU performance or similar to give high transfer speeds.
