acer has terible build quality tho?

wanton orchid
#

but terribly low price

pure karma
#

scotched taped down batteries is the funniest shit they do lmao

wanton orchid
#

it use standard cheaping
instead of screwing cheaping
i.e low support and low performance parts
but somewhat well-tried low cost parts

pure karma
#

the amount of absolutely destoyed acer's and asus's i saw at my school this year not even being durable enough to last a year was crazy

wanton orchid
#

i.e
you can go Acer if you are looking for cheap
but yes, don't expect anything better than cheaped out

#

you need more resistant stuff for school

pure karma
#

yea acer is cheap shit for cheap at the end of the day

#

but it gets the job done for a bit

wanton orchid
#

it's like these stupid bastard saying teenagers are not caring
like dick head you're just not walking your equipment constantly every fucking single day of the year
putting it in crowded space and getting it back up in a light flash because otherwise you will miss your surprise exam

pure karma
#

my dell tanked school

#

it even held up to someone trying to vandalise it whit one of thoes wood burning thingies

#

to like draw or whatever on wood

wanton orchid
#

wtf

pure karma
#

one of these things

#

although i wonder if thats what lead to the battery failing

#

its not for soldering its to burn wood

you mean floppy disks ?

I would try to use uwp
unless it requires Microsoft account
in the end it's a web app

#

So I suspect uwp be more supported

#

Not Steam games mostly.
And if you look, the "slow" was 200MB/s, which was the joke 🀣

#

Also Thermalright Heilos should be TPM7950.
I have some on order.

#

But for US market, ~~moddiy and ~~LTT sell PTM7950.
And moddiy sells the paste format too and not just the strip format.

#

Well, when checked, the moddiy shipping is expensive to anywhere.

#

Ah, Hong-Kong based (moddiy)

#

That I cannot help with, I only knew about Noodles the cat.

#

To the more Serral message.

#

Nuudeli(t) is the food.

#

Lost on what is going on.

twin dew
#

Anyways, I'm off to do OS reinstall ->

twin dew
#

Anyways, the install works, just need to do the basic install second time as the recovery partition was put into wrong spot.

#

And I bothered to open Discord on the secondary computer.

#

No, I didn't.
Seems to be eSports top-end for StarCraft 2.

#

I haven't ever cared for any eSports, ever.

#

And now the installer fucked up by not creating the MSR and recovery partitions...

#

Because I left the old EFI partition in place.

#

Just not being aware of the stupid ways the installer is coded to do shit.

#

I know the Windows installer does this kind of stupid shit, just not about the specific triggers.

#

Went hardcore and created all the partitions manually with diskpart while in the installer.
EFI, MSR, recovery and normal ones.

night girder
#

System is still holding up! πŸ₯³

#

Let the game ran for 12 hours yesterday, without an issue.

twin dew
#

And another reinstall, as I fucked up with drivers for Thunderbolt and sound card, when the stuff didn't seem to work.
Got it to work, but don't want the wrong stuff to stay behind.
Needed to shut the computer down and remove standby power for things to start working.

#

Better to redo now, than need to redo in few weeks like I had with the sound card on the previous install show up.
With it forgetting settings while playing, and needing to change away and back.

#

Switching from 5.1 virtual surround with heaphones to plain 2.0.

visual tree
#

I hate when the media abuse the term "hacker attack" without even knowing what it means....

#

Recently, some employee here in Croatia had the authorization to extract a database with information about vehicle owners and copied the database on a usb stick

#

He later probably sold the information to car insurance companies

#

The media calls this "hacker attack" even though it has nothing do to with hacking πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

#

According to this logic, anyone who has access to a confidential database and knows how to extract it to a USB drive can be called "hacker"

twin dew
#

But where in hell have I placed the latest version of the "You need to change this after install" document...

#

Ok, was just on the laptop.

visual tree
#

I don't help her but rather do everything instead of her πŸ˜…

#

Because I helped her in the past, she would write down instructions and later forget everything or refuse to read what's on the computer screen

#

There is no point in teaching people if they are pretending to "learn" when in fact they just want you do their stuff every time

#

Like, if you are old and don't know how to use technology, just tell me and I will do the tasks instead of you

#

Just don't ask me to teach you about technology if you are just going to be pretending like you are learning

#

*and later ask me do everything instead

#

I have been trying to teach my mother how to turn off a laptop for more than 10 years and she still asks me for help....

#

There are old people who are at least trying to learn something and then there are old people who are always going to expect others to help them so they don't bother learning

#

At least I am going to become an Uncle in the next 2 weeks or sooner hehe

twin dew

I didn't have those links.
I had just seen Noodle being reposted on Imgur, but looked for the actual original source today.

visual tree
#

Here, you can only pay with card if you use an app but in order to use an app, you have to ask people to move from the doors so you can scan a QR code....

night girder
#

You need a ticket from the machines, or use the app. Can't use your bank card on the bus.

visual tree
#

Do you have to scan anything with the app?

night girder
#

Oh, it seems the changed it an apparantly you can pay directly with your bank card.

visual tree
#

I hate when the bus/tram is crowded and you have to ask people to move so you can scan the QR code with your app in order to pay evildoggo

night girder
#

but if there is inspection, you have to show your bank account. Because it doesn't give you receipt as proof.

visual tree

Oof πŸ’€

tough owl

Why not get an nvme hat herg?

night girder
#

But if you are unlucky, and you don't have 4G, you cannot show it either.

tough owl
#

what if you don't wanna pay with card?

night girder
#

You can get a ticket.

tough owl
#

and only carry cash

visual tree
#

My app generates a QR code which you can show to the inspection

night girder
#

At some terminals, you have ticket machines. Or you can use the app.

visual tree
#

Why can't we have simple and logical things? Like, pick the line on the app, pay with your card and get the QR code (or something else) which you show to the ticket inspector

#

But no, you have to move through the crown in order to scan the damn code....

night girder
#

In the app, I can buy for example 10 tickets. I can activate a ticket before I get on the bus.

#

Then when there is inspection, I show that I activated my ticket.

edgy hazel
night girder
#

People might not always activate a ticket though.

#

And when they see inspection, quickly activate it πŸ˜‰

visual tree
night girder
#

And then you inspection will say: "But you just activated it... that's sus" and then people say "Oh, but I just had time to do it etc etc"

edgy hazel
night girder
#

There are the fines you can get:

visual tree
#

Yeah, they decided it's more simple to place a tag on the glass and simply cover it with a sticker hehe

night girder
#

Oh, you can also send a text message I believe to get a ticket πŸ˜„

#

So that's ... 4-5 ways? πŸ€”

#

But the thing is, public transport is crap here: always late, bad connections, unpleasant rides, old busses etc.

visual tree
#

At least our fines aren't that big (translated with Google)

night girder
#

Eh, we got a problem over here. Nobody pays to take the bus or metro.

#

Because there is barely any inspection.

visual tree
#

lol

night girder
#

And you can just enter the bus from the back, middle or front. So the driver can't check it either.

#

Even our metro system is not gated πŸ˜„

#

I've seen in some countries, if you want to take the metro, the entrances are gated.

#

Brussels has it. But not flanders. (Different companies)

visual tree
#

Here, there is a famous line with a very grumpy driver who will only open the front doors and ask everyone to show their ticket or buy it

#

If you try to avoid him, he will beat the shit out of you lol

night girder
#

πŸ˜‚

#

Here the drivers are caged behind glass/plastic.

visual tree
#

I've never been on that line but I might need to next week, I should probably buy him a chocolate too so he doesn't kill me

night girder
#

They are pretty much scared because of stabbing and violence. So I doubt they have any authority.

#

Let me rephrase, they have authority, they will not use it. Because it's not going to work.

#

I think "De Lijn" (bus/metro public transport) has a special security team. So if there are issues, they come out together with the police.

#

I even see it happen in the train station. The security is privatized now.

visual tree
#

I think they changed the law here few years ago. If you assault a school teacher or a bus driver, you can get 5 years in prison max

#

But people still attack drivers anways....

night girder
#

That's the security force for train stations now.

#

Yeah, pretty crazy that it's a thing now.

#

These are the inspectors of "De Lijn" πŸ˜‚

visual tree
#

We don't even have enough drivers, not to mention security lol

night girder
visual tree
#

Well, security doesn't exist tbh

night girder
#

Because people had respect. (Only speaking for my country).

#

But then they started stabbing drivers and other crazy shit and now we got this.

visual tree
#

Same here. When I was in elementary school, nobody had the balls to assault or insult the teacher. Today it's a norm....

#

Not to mention, parents were afraid of teachers in the past and today it's the opposite

night girder
#

Yeah, my sis is a teacher. She has more issues with parents than the kids itself.

visual tree
#

If your child doesn't have straight A's, everyone blames the teacher

night girder
#

My sis can can tell parents a whole year, that their kids need to do their tasks and study etc. Parents don't give a shit. At the end of the year, the kid has bad grades. And then they blame my sister 🀣 Like wtf?

#

"What more can I do than teach, support and communicate with the parents?"

visual tree
#

I wonder what went wrong in the last 20 years

night girder
#

I don't know. Multiple things I guess.

#

and I don't think there is one solution either. It has to be multiple things to change.

visual tree

I blame the parents and their "My child is special and he/she can be anything" mentality

twin dew

Not enabling WiFi, enabling sharing of the computers network connections to AP that is created with the WiFi card in the computer.

night girder

high crag
#

Fortress wants to know if anyone can look in the general off topic?

night girder
twin dew
#

Internet Connection Sharing getting partially enabled with on-computer AP in WiFi Direct Mode.

twin dew
#

Using computers WLAN card to create AP, instead of using the WLAN card to connect to AP.

#

And the computer acting as NAT router to that created AP, using whatever is the current Internet connection.

#

Think Mobile Hotspot functionality on your phone.

#

Same thing.

night girder
#

I am pretty sure it's by design

wanton orchid
#

it's not

#

wifi direct is as the name implies for direct connection

#

not for arbitrary network sharing

twin dew
#

Yeah, but why would the device be connecting to the COMPUTER, not computer connecting to the device.
When the computer is searching for a device.

night girder
#

You click on "find printers"* ...

twin dew
#

Even the "WiFi Direct" printers I can find are just printers with inbuilt AP for printing, where your computer connects to the printer.

wanton orchid
#

printer company doing the usual thousands backdoor shit as always

#

tbh I never trusted wifi direct
this sounds like a bullshit protocol
it never worked for me never only established direct connect

twin dew
#

This is standard Win11 functionality.
Where when going to Settings, Bluetooth & Devices, Printers & Scanners,
And clicking "Add device", it creates extra network adapter with internet connection sharing enabled, for WLAN AP, but it isn't fully active.

night girder
#

Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router.
Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, and then select Wireless Setup Wizard.
Select the name of your network, and then enter the password to complete the connection.

twin dew
#

And that isn't what I'm talking about.

#

That is normal network setup to use network printer.

night girder
twin dew
#

Before and after

#

With Windows wanting to set up DHCP server for that new network (not get IP, act as IP source) etc.

night girder
#

isn't that just security?

twin dew

At least that extra adapter went away on reboot...
Didn't go away by waiting, only by intentionally enabling ICS and disabling it again.

When Amazon has better tracking updates than the local post, you know the post is really incompetent

night girder

Or, the employees at your local post neglect their tasks to do what is neccesary to update the tracking.

For now, Windows Recall lives in the Windows Insider Program, where it’ll be tinkered with and tested for quite some time, most likely, before Microsoft dares try to launch it again. Whatever happens, when the feature hits release, Microsoft needs to make sure it gets things right this time around, and that means working on privacy and security as an absolute priority.

And that second got fucked up when I got the new computer into use.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Need to see if the firewall rule "simple" format supports using both address and MAC at same time...

#

Nope, only one per rule.

#

Ok, could do thing where everything but the one is blocked, and then the other is accepted after.

#

And it worked.
Was still able to connect after the changes with the LAN network port, but not with the other port with manual IP assignment.

#

So now I should change it so that I need to plug the WAN to the LAN to be able to connect...

wanton orchid
#

I mean
if not adress drop
if mac accept
? or accept later else drop

twin dew
#

So now the traffic has to come from right firewall network port, that is for the internal LAN, and has to be with right MAC, and right IP, and then only one username is allowed, and only with key, not password.

#

If source MAC is something else than THIS, DROP and stop processing.
If source address is THIS, ACCEPT and stop processing.

#

So if the MAC wasn't that one specific one, then the IP address is never checked.

#

If MAC matched, but ADDRESS didn't, then the traffic gets dropped later.

#

And remember that MAC rules only work in same network.

#

Ah, yeah, other way around was how I added it, as I already had the accept this IP rule, so added the inverted mac DROP rule above it.

# mortal pike Do you know if anything specifically breaks when converting it to utf-8

UTF-16 and UTF-8 are just different encodings for Unicode.
Both can encode all Unicode code points.
So converting between them properly doesn't break anything.

Difference is that UTF-8 works on 8-bit increments with multiple bytes when needed, with 1-4 bytes used. Also the single-byte version is compatible with 7-bit ASCII.
UTF-16 works on 16-bit increments, with 2 or 4 bytes used.
Windows natively uses UTF-16, (LE means little-endian subversion, specifies byte-order).

#

UTF-8 "won" the Internet etc.
But UTF-16 is used behind the scenes a lot, like by Windows, Java etc.

#

Simple comparison, included the Byte-Order-Mark (BOM) for both:

#

The decoded text is with 8-bit Windows ANSI ASCII decoding.

#

And once you go outside the 7-bit ASCII zone, just dropping the extra NULLs will not work anymore.
And possibly not even before that, not sure how closely the UTF-16 follows the 7-bit ASCII.

With back RAM, only less than 50% of GPU models actually have pads for them.

The USB ports top out at 13.6mm above the CPU top surface.

soft bloom
#

or you could dimensions of existing heatsinks marketed for that board that lookℒ️ fitting

twin dew
#

So about 15x15mm for the CPU substrate.
With about 37x32mm space when going in all directions away from the memory chip until something higher than the CPU comes along.
Possibly few mm. more if the power supply diode is lower than the CPU, but it is close.

twin dew
#

As the contact patch is only 10x10mm.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

One set for example provides 14.4x14.0mm heatsink for the CPU.

twin dew
# night girder This one looks better (pi 4)

Just general pics like this.
All the sinks are just the chip size +- little.
And the point is to get CPU sink that almost hits the top header, the left connector and the black diode next to the USB-C connector.

#

Repost of the pic:

#

Those Micro-HDMIs are 3.0mm high when the CPU is 2.4mm high.

#

But yes, kind of pixel counting.
Take a screenshot of thing with measurements.
Put it into Word.
Make a line that is multiple of that measurement (or 1:1 in this case).
Then rescale the image so that the line is same length as the specific thing in the image.
Then just make more lines and check their length.

#

Weird that the package size of the Broadcom CPU isn't public data...

#

So about 32mm wide, 38mm high, 13,6mm tall possible staying inside the USB port height for the CPU.
And the case with airflow gap should allow for 3mm more than that at least, even if there isn't any inset after the gap ends to the inner roof.

did you put a pi in a full sized tower case?

twin dew

Rackmount

twin dew
#

So seems I need to use:
Two Fischer ICK SMD A 17 heatsinks for the RAM chip (6.3mm wide, 17mm long, 4.8mm high each) (as the ICK SMD K, 13.5mm wide, 15.24mm high, isn't available at small numbers).
Two Fischer ICK SMD F 8 heatsinks for the USB and LAN (8.0mm wide, 8.0mm long, 6mm high).
And then SK448, SK581 or SK691 in 37.5mm long version for the CPU, haven't checked the availability and prices yet.

Or maybe the ICK SMD F 17 for the RAM... 8mm wide, 6mm high.
Common size on the kits for that is 10x14xlow

twin dew
#

Ok, so SK 400 37.5 (33.0x37.5x10mm) for the CPU, 2x SMD F 26 for the RAM (8.0x10.0x6.0mm) (one or two used, have to see), and 2x SMD F 10 (8.0x10.0x6.0mm) for the USB and LAN.
For total of about 16e for the parts.

There's another MoveIT hack

charred pewter

another ??? 🀦

twin dew
#

Fortunately only affects you if you have GSSAPI authentication enabled for OpenSSH in suitable version ranges.

wanton orchid
#

isn't it already patched ?

twin dew
#

Regression.

#

Patched in 4.4p1, and thjen reintruduced in 8.5p1.

#

#

And only noticed now officially.

#

And fixed again today.

wanton orchid
#

but I mean the regression a newer version dropped ?

twin dew
#

9.8p1 came out today with the reintruduced fix.

#

So OpenSSH 8.5p1 to 9.7p1 are vulnerable.
So if you haven't updated today, you have vulnerable version.

wanton orchid
#

I do updated today that's why πŸ‘

#

systemctl restart sshd too

#

needed apparently

twin dew
#

Of course the program needs restart to start the new version, and not keep running the old one.

#

But again, I just checked that I don't have the vulnerable part enabled, as I don't have fixed version available yet.

wanton orchid
#

apparently the connection would lock if not restarting
the sshd have a forking socket behavior

twin dew
#

Ok, there was, the Debian site changelog hadn't updated yet.

charred pewter
#

so an older machine still stuck on 6.6.1p1 should be safe (from THAT vuln)

wanton orchid
#

probably but there have been others

twin dew
#

Depends if the specific distro is still getting backported security fixes or not.

#

Ok, Raspberry Pi 4 8GB costs about 120e in Finland...
And 85e from Farnell where I was looking to get those heatsink parts.

#

70e vs. 50e for 2GB one.

charred pewter
#

not too shabby

twin dew
#

Including taxes that aren't in Farnells prices.

#

But do I want the 4GB or the 8GB variant...

#

62.8e vs 84.2e.
And even the 2GB variant would probably be enough for what I have planned.

wanton orchid
#

I'm waiting the poe+ hat and pcie switch compatibility updates for the pi5

twin dew
#

Going for Pi 4, not the new Pi 5.

#

Will probably go into if it brings the total over 100e from below or not...
Need to find suitable double-sided thermal tape for the sinks...

wanton orchid
#

I was planning on making a custom case for nvme+2.5gbe hat

#

there are still tricks to implement

#
  • case + heatsink + hat
  • 12V powerline problem
  • pcie switch problem
  • nvme easy access
#

but the pcie switch one is critical

twin dew
#

Ah, only needed 75e before taxes for free delivery, saving 15e.

#

So got the heatsinks, double-sided thermal tape in 0,15mm thick variant as the 0,10mm thick one was out of stock (0.8W/mK), case, power supply, Pi 4 4GB.
Something else needed except SD-card or like later?

And i do need couple of capacitors etc...

charred pewter
#

sounds a fun project

twin dew
#

The separate components are not related to the Pi.

charred pewter
#

oh lol

twin dew
#

I want to change the timing range of my cars intermittent wipers.
Need to change one resistors and one caps values.

charred pewter
#

hay back when i was growing up we had radio shack and bought bread boards and put 'computers' together lol

charred pewter
twin dew
#

Phew, found the documents with the calculations for the needed values.

#

Default range is 3-13 seconds between wipes, and the planned values should give 3-36 seconds.

#

Dropping resistor from 13k to 4,3k, and upping capacitance from 220uF to 660uF.

visual tree
#

I guess my records might be there....

charred pewter

my medical records have already been leaked to the world in the previous 3 big medical breaches this decade ... so i've given up caring at this point what information people have on me =p

And I can even get the new power switch I have wanted for my bed light.
It as stock only has brightness adjustment pot with off notch at the minimum end.
I have wanted for years to add real power switch to side of it, but haven't been able to get suitable white two pole on-off switch.

edgy hazel
#

wifi lights πŸ‘

#

just slap the switch anywhere

twin dew
#

Why? When the point is to turn that specific light off when I'm in the bed and going to sleep, and turn it on when I wake?

#

There is another switch that toggles the power to extension it is on once out of bed.

edgy hazel
#

I mean waking up with lights slowly turning on is unbeatable

twin dew
#

It does that anyways.
Which makes tuning the brightness when waking a pain.

#

Because there is so much lag early on.

#

Ah, certain type of coaxial cable for automotive use, for backup camera installation.
Teflon outer jacket IIRC.

#

Ok, not available at Farnell for reasonable price for small amounts, cheaper to get it from inside Finland, even if I have to pay for the shipping.

#

75 ohm RG-179 with FEP insulation, good for down to -90C for static use and -55C for flexible, and in this case it would need to go from trunk lid to main body, so flexing during winter.

#

Standard wire insulations are only good for down to -30C in non-moving.

#

That FEP version costs over 3 times what the PE base version costs in Finland.

#

But anyways, should end up with something like this for heatsink coverage, with all the sinks being fill length fin type with bottom to top fin direction, with 10mm high CPU heatsink and 6mm high for the rest:

#

And fuck... Farnell will not sell to me direct...
So need to ask how much it would cost via the local component shop.
Previously that has been almost the same as direct price would have been IIRC.

twin dew
#

WTF are you doing in here for that shit?

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Yes, checked sideways pics to make sure that the other stuff is lower than the CPU.
And that that specific diode is the first thing that is probably too high.

#

Those two resistors next to the memory chip might be a problem.
And the heatsink on the LAN chip needs to be higher up because of the bottom right corner big resistor that is high.

#

But for the RAM chip, I can make cuts into the sink and insulate.

#

And seems that with the Pi 4 Rev 1.5, the one big thingie is gone and many smaller parts have replaced it.
With 1.5 having been in production since 2022.
