New major pet peeve - can't copy paste in google apps from firefox

#

Seems like something the EU could go after next hehe

#

People won't stop sending me google docs

edgy hazel
#

just ask them to send it in another format?

jagged snow

It's a very old saying in the states

jagged snow

Could be originally 🤷‍♂️

Wikipedia states that it originated in the states in the early 1800s

edgy hazel
#

Dear [Recipient’s Name],

I hope this message finds you well.

I wanted to reach out regarding the Google Doc you kindly shared with me. Unfortunately, due to certain restrictions and compatibility issues, I am unable to utilize Google services, including Google Docs, at this time.

I understand the importance of seamless collaboration and I’m committed to ensuring our work together is not impacted by this limitation. To that end, I would like to propose a few alternative platforms that offer similar functionalities and can serve as an effective substitute for Google services. These include Microsoft Office Online, Dropbox Paper, or Zoho Docs, all of which provide robust collaborative features and are compatible with a wide range of devices and operating systems.

I am open to discussing these options further and finding the best solution that works for both of us. Your understanding and flexibility are greatly appreciated as we navigate this minor hurdle.

Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to your response.

Warm regards,

[Your Name]

#

ofc I'm not writing emails

jagged snow
#

Unfortuantely, google sucks and you're an idiot for using their services.

Respectfully,
FoF

#

Also, switching to firefox has somehow encouraged me to have a much greater number of browser tabs open

edgy hazel
jagged snow
#

Heh

edgy hazel
#

I get it now

jagged snow
#

Mine was figuring out that obsessively closing documentation windows that I promise myself I won't need anymore doesn't actually save me time

edgy hazel
#

BUT I do still close them regularly

jagged snow
#

Okay

edgy hazel
#

tbh the only reason to close tabs is organisation. It usually doesn't do anything for performance

jagged snow
#

Just eats up a boatload of ram, but that really isn't an issue with how cheap mem is nowadays

edgy hazel
#

unused tabs usually go to sleep now so they shouldn't actually use much RAM

jagged snow
#

Yeah

#

Firefox is slightly worse at memory management than chrome but it's really all small potatoes compared to everything else

#

wsl eats 2 gigs constantly

edgy hazel
#

I fucken hate wsl

jagged snow
#

I'm actually a massive fanboy

#

I absolutely love it

#

Legitimately one of the most meaningful improvements to personal computing from the past 5 years in my opinion

edgy hazel
#

but it's so slow compared to just running linux natively

#

but tbh that just might be DELL being incompetent at all they do

jagged snow
#

Wsl should be very nearly as fast as native

#

Pretty similar overhead to something like proxmox iirc

edgy hazel
#

it's not for me D:

jagged snow
#

Yeah, fair enough

#

But the ability to be doing development work from a linux terminal running windows native apps is pretty darn handy

edgy hazel
#

but it's my work laptop and I'm up for a replacement early next year so I'll just go Mac

willow pike
#

are you using wsl2

jagged snow
#

yes

edgy hazel
#

yes ofc

willow pike
#

worth asking

edgy hazel
#

isn't wsl 1 deprecated at this point? As in windows don't even install it anymore if you don't specify it?

jagged snow
#

Yes and no

edgy hazel
#

thank you

jagged snow
#

It's not the default but not truly deprecated

willow pike
#

the most Microsoft answer

jagged snow
#

You can run seperate linux environments in wsl1 and 2 simultaneously as well if you want to do that for whatever reason

edgy hazel
jagged snow
#

Mostly I think for compatibility with vmware/virtualbox

#

iirc it's more performant if you're doing file transfers between windows and linux or something like that too

#

Even though the actual linux filesystem is slower on wsl1

edgy hazel
#

just use two devices

jagged snow
#

That's the correct awnser unless you need to do everything on one machine

#

It's mostly aimed at developers

edgy hazel
#

devs are weird

aren't you in czechia or something?

hey guys, I got told to mention in here as #dedicated-servers might be asleep

I've done the multihome command to put my server back to ipv4 as I couldn't connect originally

(Linux)

It seems the ports are open in lsof when I check for ipv4 for satisfactory

But even if I try a telnet to 127.0.0.1 on port 15777 I get a connection refused
[11:37 PM]
so the connection check is failing even from the server itself that satisfactory is installed on?

you want to use it as a NAS, depending on your budget you prolly can't get around HDDs

But a decent way to get into it is just get a home desktop with some level of power in it and install proxmox

learn how to create VM's and containers, get some linux exposure for example starting up a dedicated satisfactory server and be happy when it's working (UNLIKE IN MY CURRENT CASE)

any of y'all have experience with react native? I'm looking for advice on best practices for project structure.

visual tree
#

Great, fiber deployment might be delayed because of my crazy neighbor....

#

ISP wants to install a street cabinet on a city land and they got a permission from the city

#

But the crazy neighbor won't let the workers install a cabinet because it's blocking the "balcony view"....

#

I hope she gets arrested hehe

pure karma
#

tell her to reduce her fov so the cabinet is no longer in her visionhehe

dire igloo
#

Just look elsewhere, smh

#

Even better idea: have the city build it, put a gigantic middle finger cover over it

edgy hazel
#

noo not the beautiful view of the street

visual tree
#

If the project manager for the area doesn't have a successful negotiation with the neighbor, they will probably relocate the cabinet to another location which means delays because you need to plan the network again

#

And then another crazy neighbor could cause problems.....

dire igloo
#

What's there to negotiate?
They tell her "go cry about it" and build it anyway

visual tree
#

I think the neighbor wants the cabinet to be moved 1 meter to the right so they might accept that proposal than keep arguing

#

Sometimes, the project managers for fiber deployment manage to solve the issue if the neighbor demands don't affect the project much

#

Entirely depends on how difficult the neighbors are

soft bloom
#

who heard about Guternberg-Richter law?

#

i thought it must be easy to implement generation of data that follows it. its just a log10, i thought.
compute numbers you expect to see after performing this analyzis, and then just add magnitudes in the way that follows it: we get 1 event at mag X0 (>= mag X0) - add mag X0 to the list, we get 2 events at mag X1 - add mag X1 to the list, we get N events at mag Xi - add N-num_events_already_added events of mag Xi to the list. easy
And this make almost ™️ log distrubution (wrong usage of the term), and fitting coeficients gives back a close result.
BUT
at mag that 2 steps bigger from the lowest magnitude (min magnitude) i get a wrong number, despite it total sum being alright. i don't get it. this seems extremely weird

I spend an hour trying to figure out why mac mail keeps archiving all my emails. Now I just found out that when I import my Gmail in to Mac mail, the app renames the "All Inbox" (gmail side) to "Archive". So in the end, my mails weren't even archived. Just a shitty naming scheme from some idiot developer at apple side. Why the fuck would one rename "All Innox" to Archive. This is confusing as hell.

charred pewter
#

haha ... my Mail.app gets in this mood where it will only grab 1 email at a time from gmail ...

#

I love path too long errors

soft bloom
jagged snow
#

Also you can do a simple regedit to extend the length

soft bloom
jagged snow
#

Even with some pretty deep file structures I've only seen it once personally

#

And regardless, that regedit exists

night girder
#

Yeah, take it as a hint. You doing something wrong. Never ever had the issue of path too long.

#

But then again, I don't develop in a Windows PC 😂

jagged snow
#

I do hehe

charred pewter
#

we used to have path too long issues with developers porting their game to mac and due to how mac adds even more path length... the game would fail. but the path too long issue was actually a limitation in the game itself not allowing for a path to be huge (had nothing to do with the OS) ... lol

night girder
#

Either structure is too complex, or the naming is too long. ThisIsAFolderForAssets/ThisIsTheFolderForTrees -> Assets/Trees.

charred pewter
#

like a developer only allows for a path to be 128 chars long ... and then when its put into a folder named with the long game name, with the game name on the package.app folder, and then the executable, and then all of that being in the users applications folder ... LOL it was like "WTF CRASH!!!"

night girder
#

I don't get it. What do you all do 😒

charred pewter
#

trunnnncate names to just letters to make it stop failing rofl

#

but that issue seems to have died away thankfully

#

its been at least 3 years since we ran into a path too long issue in a game

soft bloom
#

depth of file structure has little to do with it

#

i had path too long error on linux

#

*as well

#

its just the way things are when you have lots of data

#

of different kinds. created at different time

#

imagine if you had to write a bunch of methods of analysing data * a bunch of datasets * a bunch of modifications of datasets * a bunch of attempts to make result look right and the only way to communicate to user is FS

#

(aside from opening the file, ofcourse, but that doesn't work when you created dozens of files in a matter of minutes - opening each and every one of them to find somethins is just not working)

tough owl
night girder
#

We talking about the same paths?

charred pewter
#

right... 'depth' isnt much of the issue ... its the full length of the path ... you could have it only at D:/super long ass name here that goes into oblivion and beyond/app

#

or buried 50 levels deep and still be shorter

#

a path is just a string, and strings can have limits in certain situations/os/databases

#

about like how an 'url' has limits (although HUGE limits) ...

night girder
#

So how is depth not a problem?

#

"parent/group/child" is longer than "parent/child" as a string

charred pewter
#

/1/2/3/4/5/..../180/ could still be shorter than a single folder named 2000 characters long

night girder
#

Yeah, but wasting path length with stupid folders will also result in long paths was my point

charred pewter
#

really ? ... thats something ive not run into ... "depth limits"

night girder
#

Yeah, because you are not a dumbo who does it 😂

charred pewter
#

rofl ... granted im a KISS follower, and anything 5 levels deep is already too complicated lol

night girder
#

It's stuff like this:

#

The developers did the 00, 0a, ... format on purpose for this reason.

charred pewter
#

you know, why has windows NOT added the flip-open list view ability after all these years ... even linux gui has the ability

night girder
#

Because they are busy with adding AI to everything?

#

and reinventing the UI. hehe

charred pewter
#

i so LOVE this ability

#

would absolutely love it in windows

night girder
#

still prefer macOS for daily use tbh.

charred pewter
#

its what i use for work/home

#

i usually have each project folder open in a new window, then list view with all the flip-opens to manage the files

night girder
#

I whish Safari did fix the aspect ratio bug when going fullscreen on second monitor. Or the album art bugging out in music.app. Or when I take out the ethernet, it doesn't want to switch to wifi automatically. And x other bugs.

charred pewter

just so much easier than constantly going forward and back in a single fucking window

night girder
#

Yeah for sure.

charred pewter
#

and i absolutely hate 'tabbed file browsing' lol

night girder
#

There is 3rd party stuff for Windows though

charred pewter
#

interestingly enough, there are 3rd party alternatives to the Finder in macos too!

#

(but i dont use them)

#

its just after all these years, with windows copying some of the WORST bits of macos .... why have they never thought to copy the folder navigation shit

#

i was first introduced to the flip-open directories when i was working for Motorola and using a Unix system ... the GUI had the ability and it was really cool. then a year later macos added it to Finder as well

#

so ive had my 14700k now for many months, and have played many different games ranging from simple to insane ... not a single damned crash (in a game or windows) ... then today im looking at the forum for PlanetCrafter and see this big thread about the game crashing a lot ....... and some moderator/dev basically blaming it on the 13/14th gen intels being unstable, and quoting some article on TomsHardware about it. And im like wtf? this is news to me after having been rock solid stable for months =p

#

so yeah, now im not going to bother buying PlanetCrafter because the devs just blame a persons hardware for their brokenass game

#

.... furthermore wtf is tomshardware on about the cpus being unstable ???

charred pewter
#

no, ive not got the game... the demo i tried awhile ago never crashed, but that was awhile ago

jagged snow
#

it's mostly the 14900k(s) that are having issues, they're either dead from the factory or degrading very quickly

charred pewter

i had the lan drivers on a usb stick though ... however windows install doesnt just have a button to go into 'load drivers' panel ... you had to like KNOW to jump out with some key combo, and then navigate around to the right thing to get the driver selected

no root

using this to host a satisfactory server but i want to backup onto the hdd

twin dew
#

The installer either sets up separate root account.
Or sets up the installer created normal account to use "sudo" command to be able to upgrade to root.

#

You seem to have used the second option without active separate "root" account.
So you use "sudo" command to run commands at root level.

#

or for example "sudo su" or "sudo bash" etc. to get root level console access.

#

or just "sudo whatever" to run the whatever command at root level.

steel peak
#

i dont want this account to have root access tho cuz its hosting the server

twin dew
#

Ah, permission problems, understood wrong.

steel peak
#

hmm i think i should format again and mount somewher else?

twin dew
#

So not "harddrive", but specific files.

#

So you need to either change the mount options to set the right user for who is able to access the drive.
Or use chown and chgrp commands to change the ownership.

Looking for a new gpu with a £450 budget
Currently running:
32GB Ram
i7-4770k @ 3.5Ghz
2x Radeon R9 290 4Gb

I can't upgrade the whole rig before you say start again.he only game I play is Satisfactory and, even then its running at 1080p no need for 4K etc.
Currently the whole lot is in a water loop - but happy to drop the GPU out of the loop if needs be.

Any recommendations?

gilded helm
#

Is that one of those dual GPU cards? Or are you still rocking Crossfire after all this time?

digital nova
#

ha ha - still rocking crossfire!

gilded helm
#

Do you think you'd eventually reuse the GPU in a new build? If so you could spend basically as much as your budget allows. But I'd say get an RX 6600 or perhaps something even cheaper.

#

When you do build a new machine, keep your old one as it is as a spare device.

digital nova
#

as you can tell it's been a while since I was in the hardware buying mode - are there any brands I should specifically avoid or engage with ?

#

googleage highlights sapphire tech and powercolor....

gilded helm
#

Yep, resources exist for PSUs, SSDs and so forth. But PC communities have become more refined and usually zero in on specific good and bad products rather than brands as a whole.

#

Especially now that we know a lot of brands all use the same underlying components and OEMs..

languid gulch
#

my last 2 GPUs have been powercolor & they've both done great

gilded helm
#

One thing to be aware of is that lower tier motherboards, PSUs and so forth are way, way better than the lower tier ones of the era you built your PC in. Minimum quality is generally way higher now.

languid gulch
#

they won't necessarily have the latest & greatest, but yea, quality is definitely better than it used to be

#

plus if you're anything like me, the absolute latest is a bit much to pay a premium for, so a generation or 2 old is fine

#

i'm on a 5600X/6800XT, & i got both after a new gen came out

digital nova
#

I bought towards the top last time - mobo is a Asus Maximus, the drives were all Samsung 970Pro etc etc and at the time Crossfire was the Don

languid gulch
#

yea trying to do that today would easily push past $1500

#

although crossfire & SLI are functionally dead now, so no needing to buy a 2nd gpu or a super beefy PSU to run 2

gilded helm
#

New gen GPUs probably start coming around November, if Nvidia and AMD's 2 year release cadence holds up. But high end will come out first.

digital nova
#

ah yes - the PSU, that was a monster Corsaire AX1200i

languid gulch
#

if you're aiming to dedicate 450 to just the GPU, newegg UK has a RX6800 for 392 right now

#

that'd last you a good long while, well into a new system once the 4770K gives up

#

& it'd actually lower your power budget, seeing as 1 of those R9 290s is a 275W card, same as the 6800

#

& techpowerup lists the 6800 as 360% more powerful than the 290

digital nova
#

and I'm correct in thinking that more VRAM is better for Satisfactory, yes?

#

so ideally 16Gb?

languid gulch
#

& other games will enjoy it too

#

definitely overkill for 1080p, but that just means you can crank all the textures & other settings all the way up

gilded helm
#

RX6800 is a solid choice

digital nova
#

tip top, thanks people

gilded helm
#

It wouldn't surprise me if you could also sell those 290s still. People seek out old hardware for all sorts of reasons.

gilded helm
twin dew

im not sure to what extent you can mix and match ikea bases and tabletops? does it have to be the same company

#

like can i only match a trotten table base with a trotten table top

twin dew

I mean that is the base that comes with the table you linked, in one of the four colors.

charred pewter
#

not really ... all resources and materials are just materials to use ... sure 'holes' wont align up, but that doesnt mean you cant make your own

twin dew

The base seems to be fine, but the table top piece is crap.

#

It makes do, but is very bad material.

sterile plinth

cause i have seen a lot of product lines selling only the base or only the tabletop

But any table top that isn't crap costs at least double what the Ikea chipboard one would cost.

In Finland Ikea does sell that base as separate item.

I can help with that

For your benefit, please take your time and answer all these questions as it'll make all further conversations much easier. Be as generous with information as you can.

  • When are you planning on purchasing the system? If you're not ready to buy, I won't bother, but someone else might.
  • Your budget, currency, and country.
  • The purpose of the build such as playing competitive shooters at 1080p/modern AAA games at 1440p/3D rendering in blender/editing 1h long videos at 4k in premiere.
  • Do you need peripherals, monitors, and/or wifi connectivity? If you don't, link your current monitor. If you do, give us the total budget with peripherals in mind.
  • Aesthetical preferences such as case color and amount of rgb. Linking a case you like can be helpful.

# jagged snow .net is usually very cheap

There is strict limit how much the top-level domain "owner" who the various US old domains were "given" to can charge.
And that there must be free reselling allowed.
So there is both price cap on the base price, and then very competitive market on the reselling stage for them, so the price is low.

For the various new top-level domains, there are no rules.
One company buys specific one, and sells domains for that however they like.

new right to repair plans from the EU seem promising

mental oriole
#

Tldr?

edgy hazel
#

warranty from 2 years to 3 years, no more denying repair for already repaired devices, no more blocking of repair via hardware/software locks COUGH APPLE AND SAMSUNG COUGH, manufacturers need to be able to provide parts and instructions to 3rd party repair shops

mental oriole
#

Finally, about time.

twin dew
#

"not denying repairs" as in new warranty period from the repair/replacement.

#

Not as long as the initial, but still substantial IIRC.

#

IIRC that old 2 year minimum as the minimum for that.

edgy hazel
#

and also manufacturers need to make their devices repairable as in not intentionally making the device unnecessarily hard to repair

twin dew
#

And AFAIK there isn't limit to those repair + new warranty cycles.

#

So should really cut down on extreme planned obsolescence

#

Where you design the thing to last just past the warranty period.
