I've lost some mirrors in my first year of driving, in those underground parking lots.

Light turns yellow, car behind wants to run it, and speeds up, person in front stops.. bam

Yeah

Just checking if you have the same logic as we do over here.

tough owl

if youre coming to a yellow light just brake if theres a car in front of you

jagged snow

In the US yellow light means stop if safely possible

tough owl
#

nah it means speed up

Nah, not to rat anyone out. To cover my own ass ๐Ÿ˜‚

night girder
#

You are not random.

tough owl
#

to the police I sure hope to be

night girder
#

Atleast I am a bit happy that the laws surrounding driving seem somewhat consistence for some parts around the world.

tough owl
#

except the UK, them fools said yea we drive on the left

#

have to have special made cars just for them too, what a nightmare

night girder
#

Yeah, I cannot think of a good and logic explanation for that. I guess, it's easier to just keep driving left? They don't have to adjust everything ๐Ÿ˜„

tough owl
#

no idea but its weird

night girder
#

probably historical reasons and now money reasons / laziness / we are used to it.

#

No clue, but I don't want to drive there.

jagged snow
#

Neither do I

night girder
#

Blue is left handed. Red is right handed.

jagged snow
#

I just know I'd end up in the wrong side of the road out of habit

tough owl
#

makes sense why the aussies do it too

#

and india

night girder
#

A lot of sense.

tough owl
#

they drive on the left in japan too?

Many of the countries using LHT were part of the British Empire, while others, including Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Bhutan, Macao, Thailand, Mozambique, Suriname, United States Virgin Islands, Sweden and Iceland (which use RHT since September 1967 and late May 1968 respectively), were not. Most of the countries that were part of the French colonial empire adopted RHT.

#

United States Virgin Islands ๐Ÿค”

tough owl
#

jagged snow

That's some very convoluted history

night girder
#

Oh the Caribbean!

tough owl
#

the islands are def not virgin

night girder
tough owl
#

id rather not

night girder
#

did they make baby islands?

#

(which is also a thing btw, countries are making islands lately)

tough owl

isnt that mostly the UAE?

night girder

This one is man made.

China has been doing it too

Nonetheless, it's impressive.

tough owl

kinda dumb, imo

night girder
tough owl

use your existing space more effectivly

#

makes sense for military bases though

night girder
#

One artificial island built on Fiery Cross Reef near the Spratly Islands is now the site of a military barracks, lookout tower and a runway long enough to handle Chinese military aircraft.[22]

#

Also considering the way things are heading (global warming), gaining experience in how to build islands can come in handy.

jagged snow
#

Given what China is doing in the Philippines, it might also come in handy for more immediate concerns as well

night girder
#

The Netherlands also has one of the largest artificial islands. 970 km2. It was made in 1969 and called Flevopolder.

jagged snow
#

Interesting

tough owl
#

thats a funny name

night girder
#

Levees and dikes were first built around the polder. However, unlike similar projects, the internal water was then drained by diesel and electric pumps.

#

for some reason I imagine, that's a lot of pumping.

jagged snow
#

Sure sounds like it

night girder
#

Sorry, last one I post. Then I'll shut up about it. But this graph shows sizes in descending order.

jagged snow
#

Oh wow

#

That's a wild difference between 1st and second

night girder
#

Yeah, I am surprised too ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

#

Haha, utilisation of Fundao Island (the last one).

jagged snow
#

The Netherlands have pulled off a lot of cool engineering projects

night girder

How cool aint that? You go to a university and they made a freaking island for it ๐Ÿ˜‚

night girder
#

I can see a whole new sport with racing drones in the future, can be cool ๐Ÿ˜„

jagged snow
#

Although iirc the original inspiration to that drone and the current wr holder for speed is from somewhere else

jagged snow
#

Yeah
His name is Ryan Lademann and he holds the speed record at 225mph

#

Oh, he's in the US

#

I didn't know that

#

And apparently that 225 number is average, peak speed was 235

night girder
#

Impressive

#

I can imagine the military is also interested in this ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Besides sports and military purposes, I don't see what else we can do with drones that reach that speed.

jagged snow
#

The technology improvements that come from it could lead to improvements in heavy lift/cargo drones I suppose

Same way that data center tech trickles down to consumer stuff

and the same with racing cars and consumer cars.

The tournament will include a special version of the Satlympics, which involves teams from the Netherlands, France, Germany, USA, UK, and Coffee Stain Studios. All of these teams will compete head-to-head in three games: an extreme version of parkour, solving complex puzzles to build a radar tower (and parachuting off said tower), and replicating a QR codeโ€”the first with a successful scan wins.

#

I'm pretty content with getting my tech news from ars, the verge, and the wsj

twin dew
#

And seems that Spotify doesn't have any checking on what "music publishers" can put in there themselves for "band".
Someone uploaded load of "singles" with AI generated cover images and used the band field for tagging or like.
And one of those was "Serenity", which is real band, and all the crap got added like they had something to do with the "music".

jagged snow
#

Oh geez

twin dew
#

As Spotify now supports adding multiple artists per song/single/album.
And the idiot used that for "genre" or something like that...

#

Got added 18h ago.

twin dew
#

And I would expect that the actual "songs" would also be AI generated ambience "music".

night girder
#

People wanted AI ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

It's easy, it's fast, it's cheap and can create millions and million of "creative" media that big tech companies can get rich on.

twin dew
#

If the shit hadn't appeared into my "What's New" because of the "Serenity" as artist shit, I wouldn't have cared.
But seems Spotify has big hole in their system...

night girder
#

There is already AI to detect AI hehe

#

So spotify will probably (or maybe already has?) implement an AI that will mark other AI generated content as "AI".

twin dew
#

Or just make it that the actual account for specific band has to confirm any addition of themselves as "artist" by others?

#

publishing account I mean.

Just laughed so hard at an amateur TV show because a contestant answered the question wrong but the show host told him he is correct. The show host asked who founded Apple and the contestant answered it's Steve Jobs which is partially correct but the host told him he is correct anyways...

There are 3 founders

night girder

Asablic, you are correct. But most people only heard of Steve Jobs and Tim Cook.

And forget the person doing the actual tech?

Jobs did em dirty.

#

Or maybe something happened, I don't know. But he is the face of Apple.

#

And the rest was laboring away in the shadows.

twin dew

And Cook wasn't there at start, the third was Ronald Wayne.

night girder

So, SLS is now obsolete. That's quite a rich mission history it garnered during its long run, though.

twin dew
#

It has been obsolete before the designing was started, as Congress mandated using "same" parts as Shuttle to keep the money rolling to right companies.

But I don't doubt Congress will still try to funnel missions to it. We have a long history of supporting obsolescence for the sake of jobs.

This week's launch was only 'partially successful' with reuse in mind. If you just make each SpaceX rocket fully expendable, it can still carry more than SLS for a fraction of the price.

#

Grok, elon musks open-source AI?

edgy hazel
#

The chatbot is similar to tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and Microsoftโ€™s Copilot, with the biggest thing setting it apart being its sarcastic tone and wittiness. Unlike other chatbots, Grok will respond to more controversial questions that others simply refuse to answer.
this sounds like it sucks horribly

#

Grok only has access to data from X (formerly known as Twitter) rather than the wider internet as a whole

#

this can't go wrong

night girder
#

Yes, read something similar.

night girder
#

and then they will make sure other AI can't get access that quickly to that information ๐Ÿ˜‰

edgy hazel
night girder
#

But a difference is that it can tap into the Twitter engine to provide real-time updates on news.

#

Last year, the Tesla and Space X boss demonstrated that the bot would have no hesitation in joking about Sam Bankman-Fried or riffing about how to make cocaine.

#

โ€œIt is designed to have a little humour in its responses,โ€ Musk said.

tough owl
night girder
#

So, "fast" or direct access to twiter engine. And joke answers. Oh and open source!

edgy hazel
#

open source might be the only thing saving it a little, the other stuff makes me throw up a little

night girder
#

We will see how it plays out ๐Ÿ˜‰ (someone said that X wouldn't last a year, and so far, it's still here)

#

lately musk is trying to play the open-source card a lot.

edgy hazel
#

and considering how they basically destroyed almost all API calls to twitter, I doubt it's very useful outside of the official bot running on their servers

night girder
#

Wait wait ...

#

API calls not public is NOT the same as API calls deleted.

tough owl
#

I dunno we should see. It definitely wonโ€™t work on my gpu

night girder
#

All they are forcing is users have no longer access to API, they have to use grok (I assume) to get it done.

#

So they are just forcing people to use their new technology. Maybe with a price tag? Not sure.

edgy hazel
#

Hell any normal website is not gonna do that

languid gulch

languid gulch
#

something really fucking stupid is going to happen that is either going to make the entire thing collapse all on its own, or be so bad that even slow governments are going to finally take some concrete actions

night girder
#

There are so many people around the world to get angry on. If the public wants to get angry, they have to be fair and be angry to the whole bunch.

#

Not just cherry-pick, half of the anger is because of the media reporting on specific persons.

languid gulch
#

with Elon he's branded himself as some great inventor, when he did some minor coding for a payment site, then bought it with daddy's money, then bought a tiny upstart electric car company with daddy's money, then upped his game & started a rocket company with US gov't money. he hasn't built a damn thing despite constructing an entire public persona around it

edgy hazel
#

Its more a "politics is too busy licking rich peoples boots than to help the public" type situation

languid gulch
#

yea, the whole "not paying taxes" thing gets old after a while too

night girder
#

It get's even crazier when leaders of countries are acused of tax evasion ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Haha, how do you explain that to the people. And somehow, it's all dandy.

languid gulch
#

plus Musk did some super kind things like asking how much it'd cost to actually get rid of food shortages around the world, got a number from experts, then went & spent twice as much (of someone else's money) buying X. super nice guy stuff there

night girder
#

The Elon Musk hate is really strong here. Wow.

edgy hazel
#

yeah because he's a clown

languid gulch
#

when someone constructs a persona to be massively public, then go and do objectively shitty things constantly, don't be surprised when people don't like that person

#

i used to buy into the musk stuff, for a bit. i used to think that getting to billionaire value status meant that they worked hard or were some kind of genius to get there. i have since learned better

night girder
#

Well me and herg had a few discussions already about Elon Musk. I heard pretty much all there is at this point.

#

And with a lot you both say I just agree. But then I also know he still does "good things" directly or maybe without realizing it, or with ulterior motive. But in the end, it still helps a lot of people.

Question on GPU temps. I've got a 6800xt here, bought used. I think its paste is done. Those have VESA mounting holes, but the mounting is recessed, so multi-size VESA mounts with larger mount option won't work.

#

Cannot be sure from images if 75x75 or 100x100.

#

HP used to do 100x100 with that type of recessed mount.

languid gulch
#

i've been tempted to make some kind of dock that'd sit just under my monitor, but mounts to a vesa stand

twin dew
#

With the recess itself being 130mm wide.

edgy hazel
languid gulch
#

i kinda worry about the mount area cracking if it's just plastic like that

#

i had thought about hunting down a monitor stand with a usb hub built in, but they're expensive & you're SOL if it dies

#

plus that kind of thing isn't exactly customizable

edgy hazel
languid gulch
#

i guess i could also do that dumb thing where you use longer bolts but add a nut to lock things down

edgy hazel
#

The upper rack is 3d printed

languid gulch
#

ok that's nice

#

might also just hunt down some angle brackets at home depot ๐Ÿคฃ hammer 90 degree bends & drill holes where they're needed

twin dew
#

I need to tape USB 3.0 HUB to bottom of my desk on the left, on opposite side from the computers...
I have the parts, just haven't installed yet...

#

One forward port, 3 downward ones.

languid gulch
#

i did this janky shit to mount a cable box to a wall mounted tv so it'd move to the right angle ๐Ÿคฃ

twin dew
#

First part of hub install done, now mounted in right place and the cord done up to the desk back cable channel.
Still need to do the wiring inside the channel and to the computer.

#

But that is for later day.

#

So as long as the used VESA mount is max 130mm wide, it will work.

#

If wider, needs spacers & long screws.

no, unfortunatly.

theres just 1 on this display, but if i use the tv's apps they go away

No, I mean a different port on your gpu

It's hard to determine weather or not it's hardware failure without being able to troubleshoot further. I'd recommend DDU and full reinstall as a first step.

Properly done router would autolimit the used upload buffer.
And if that isn't happening like in this case, setting rate limit manually might help, if that is possible.

sand saddle
#

Didnโ€™t change a thing

#

Ig it just depends on the time Iโ€™m testing.

#

And this is still wifi, Iโ€™m not sure how Iโ€™ll go about getting wired.

#

The cable I used for my PC is now getting used by the router and 5G antenna.

#

Ig Iโ€™ll buy a 2nd router.

#

Maybe one without wireless capability.

sand saddle
twin dew
#

Bufferbloat (and the rising latency on upload) is because network device has too large buffer to store traffic, which it uses fully before starting to drop packets when there is too much data.
Because some network gear manufacturers engineers or programmers think that dropping data is a sin.
When in actuality with network gear, you want to have minimal buffers needed to archieve full utilization, and then start dropping data early when overloaded.

#

Dropping packets is the intended way to signal that the link is overloaded.

sand saddle
#

With download, the antenna is getting somewhere in the ballpark of 500mbps, so it should keep our 150mbps stable at all times.
But ig I could see if I can set the upload from the intended 30 to like 25 or smth.

twin dew
# sand saddle New internet over 5G and tested over wifi

Yes, the normal latency is high, but the upload active latency is 2.3 seconds.
Purely because of too much buffering.
In the second test it is "only" +35ms, which is still somewhat bad, but much more in line of expectations.

#

And some is also on ISP side, but mainly I was talking about that 2.3 second upload latency increase in first test, that is almost certainly local in the router.

twin dew
#

But the second test only brings the upload buffer bloated latency to same value it is at base in the first test, from ISP oversubscription.

And what is the IF etc. set to right now?

night girder
#

What it should be (according to you), default 1733MHz (1729.9MHz in HWINFO). I would expected if the CPU started to die, thatit would become more unstable. Maybe it's too soon to speak. But it seems more stable than before.

twin dew
#

Does it now work on 1800 or 2000MHz FCLK?

night girder
#

I don't think so. But it's not suppose to work on those?

#

I mean, those are OC values, so that can lead to unstable behavior is what AMD would say to me.

2000MHz is what every CPU "should" be able to do for FCLK by AMD.
1733MHz is stock and guaranteed.

Optimizes for case where the previous RAM contents was a pointer which would contain what address was to be next read, and getting that before the program asks for it.
But when the previous RAM content wasn't pointer, does extra memory read that wasn't needed, and is in this case a security hole.
