I set up 5 overclocked gens with a normal node
using the packaged diluted fuel recepie and heavy residue recepie
the packaged diluted fuel recepie is pretty funny
There are enough hard drives around to get them all
And you can buy hard drives with coupons if one so chooses.

I decided to build this one to give me an incredibly large buffer so I could get working on oil processing ^^
but to answer the question: when I unlocked steel I made a 750 MW coal plant and it probably would have been enough to carry me to oil power had I not made way too big of a steel factory.

The sad thing is, that coal plant I just showed uses a Mk1 miner on a pure coal node... There are three pure coal nodes there.
So to fully exploit that coal, it would have to be six times bigger 😂

Vertical splitters/mergers are one of the most bizarrely fumbled features
i am pretending that they don't exist until they get reworked or at least improved to fix being out of alignment and BP issues etc
I agree that instead of making brand new code that fits the lifts properly, devs choose the option of patching the splitter to fit in
like trying to fit a square box to circle hole
even then stuff like being half a click out of alignment and thus not fitting or snapping where they should is a big deal
splitters etc also has some extra issues that. I had a splitter that refused to output from certain direction until i redid the belt over and over again
they needed to recook the splitter merger code instead they gave ultra raw lift splitters and mergers
and to be ultra fair I dont know why they didn't 1.1 patch or released it now.
they could do a minipatch for infinite nudge and photo mode and fix auto connect, multiplayer and splitter issues in next one
I just hope this is not a "shareholders telling them to rush for console release"
also game still starts to suffer memory leaks with constant building..

for the most part 1.1 is like 1.0 but better and you can just ignore the issues, except the multiplayer crash that happens every 10 minutes. That made multiplayer just completely unplayable.

I've found that the easiest way to use vertical splitters or mergers is to make a lift between two floor holes first
Just be sure to make the lift in the right direction.
the issue is splitters are 0.5m off when put on the lift that starts from floor hole.
it only gers worse from there

The splitters will perfectly snap in front of belts if you hold control, had no issue.

vertical splitter has fixed grid, making it very awkward to use
its basically impossible to line it up if it has even a 1m height difference
It's basically as hard to align as a tower of splitters.

Personally the vanilla hoverpack range is too short and it's too slow, an improved hoverpack is one of the only mods I use
well it is supposed to be a construction tool, not a travel tool

depends on how you want to plan your factory (whether you are looking at a fixed number of output per min)
I like having a huge steel beam/pipe factory simply because it means I no longer have to worry about conveyor belts and containers.
found the purpose of trucks. When im transporting coal for steel but the distance isnt that far for a train but its a little too far to make a good looking conveyor belt, slap on trucks

i dont see a reason to use them over trains unless the distance is too short to really make use of a train and theres an easily accessible fuel spot
or you don't want to build train infrastructure - just run trucks on natural roads

In that setup, The first 2m floor is 19m above the miner. Each 1m foundation is at 10m each section, and the last one at 9.5
Trucks can also move a crazy amount of stuff over short distances instead of a bunch of belts

if multiple trucks are driving the same route, how does collision work? does the game just ignore automated trucks colliding with other trucks, or is there some kind of queueing system?
they collide, but try to fix themselves if they go off road
they do collide but they usually just respawn. Ideally make sure you place them a good distance apart. Its ideal to basically turn off all auto pilot then build the trucks one by one spaced out. When it looks good then start the autopilot quickly for each one

I used a 3-foundation wide road with a road barrier in the middle without issues
so 1.5 per lane, you can bump it up to 2 per lane if needed
Personally I barely use vehicles until ive unlocked everything and making permanent factories (except a few drones)

well, I was imagining a road system with one lane in each direction, so they wouldn't collide head on, but I was also imagining what might happen if the truck comes on to the shared road and another truck happens to be in the intersection at that time
especially for say, a 4-way intersection
i use tractors straight away usually for steel production mainly, since coal is always a good distance away. A belt would be completely fine to do but I just really dislike long belts. But when it comes to trucks I usually ignore them completely in favor of trains

bottom is to take power out of the power tower for the small poles not the long cables for covering distance

and base nuclear is super simple

You could try setting the belt starting from the opposit direction. Like B to A instead of A to B. That reverses how the belt will be formed

alt recipes aren't "good" or "bad", they are situational, usually trading something for something else (e.g. more complexity, but better yield; or more material cost, but less space needed; or changing resource needed for making something, etc.)
whether a recipe fits your factory, only you can decide that 😉
and since you can get all recipes anyway, it's not "this or that", you can get/use whatever you want

I just researched my first hard drive and I got the option of increased inventory space (+6) or an alternate recipe: Bolted Iron plates. (Basically a more costly version of the original recipe. With thrice the input of plates but 50 screws required each operation..)

My bro did a stress-test to half our coal generators, 3 hours later, i realized, he didnt connect the water back, and we were running with only 2 coal generators instead of 4, i think they passed the test
if you don't want either result from the drive, do not take either. Leave them in there, and you won't get them from future drives as long as they're in the library
Guess I'll have to search for more drives.. Thank goodness we can just clean them by deconstructing the wreckage now.

If you haven't already noticed, the ship that you send milestone resources with from the hub is the same as drop pods containing hard drives around the map, implying you are far from the first pioneer attempting to exploit this particular planet. And 1.0 added a "secret" helmet placed on the map among other things further adding to that

You can fit the 1x Refinery + 2x Packager closed Diluted loop in a single 4x4 blueprint; just requires some creative placement

you can items ion BPs so with separate loops you don't even need to fill anything
with merged loops, canisters put into the blueprints will not be enough unless you put in full ones too
and even then, you'd still need a smart splitter/priority merger to make sure the amount is correct

You can use the scroll wheel to change the angle of a curve when placing the rail. You can create a junction on an existing rail without having to mange the splits manually. You can use auto-connect blueprints to quickly build a rail line over distance

trains dont re-path, trains dont pre-reserve chain signals and have to slow down a lot, stations cant be named the same thing whereby the train goes into the first empty station of a given name, stations cant be re-sorted in the timetable omg, overall signal snapping points leave a lot to be desired, not to mention the new train group capabilities that came with factorio space age
assuming you do a specific design and don't make a mistake while doing that design
while my approach is generic and works in all cases
the difference is literally "clocking all machines exactly" vs "clocking only the last ones before a sink exactly"

trains not repathing is a feature (and repathing in general is not needed in SF), trains slowing down means you didn't leave enough space between signals, naming two train stations the same would be weird (given the train always goes to the same one anyway, due to no repathing)
repathing for 2 reasons:
-In multiplayer, having 3 "personal parking" stations of the same name, and the train automatically picks one that is empty
-For busy sections, to create staggered 'train buffer' zones (though maybe this one can be done nowadays? not really sure tbh)
3 personal parking stations are equal to one station with 3 blocks so 3 trains can queue
but i painted my train gold and gave it a name... i dont want to take the first one in line
then make one of the 3 parking spots as yours, and only use your parking spots

well megaprinting with scim has problems, so if you can I would avoid using scim megaprints

it will even count ground beneath other terrain as valid location for the loot crates, making getting to those crates rather difficult

Whoops, fixing the power stations nitrogen blunder had a knock on effect in the foundry, it's producing 4711 out of 4800 ingots due to the coke stoppage.

mixing items is not a good idea unless you really know what you're doing
Those side branches need the center completed as well before the rest in the lines open up.
If you feel you must mix, Smart/Programmable splitters are your tools. But as KYo097 stated, nbest to keep things separate.

Plan accordingly. Typically logistics on first floor, and then maybe each process as you go up. Or some may do top down, to have finished parts at the bottom. Totally up to you. Keep like production lines together, leave at least a foundation width between if want walkways (or 4m width if using catwalks)
Utilize at least 4m "sub floors" for belt routing... (Fits a merger/splitter real nice like)
I think I'll do Grassy Fields because I really need to work on teaching myself how to use trains, and it's great for it. I do want to try the desert sometime because it was so neat looking when I checked it out in my big save, but I just don't think I'm ready for the challenge of an area where I don't start with a lot of biomass.

Cool cool. All of that is up to personal tastes. And, perhaps after one factory, you do a "center out" approach.. or really like the single sided approach and find ways to improve/do things different.
Some like to have one wall dedicated to material travel to and from the different floors. All sorts of different ways/layout/design concepts, etc

how do you guys set up factories for the basic stuff like iron plates, rods, wire etc
because i just had constuctors everywhere but i want to make it more neat
I have a satellite factory making plates and rods which get shipped back to main with trains
Double stacked smelters and constructors, you put two or more ontop of each other. Really neat way to make your builds more compact
You will need to use lifts
Take a look through #screenshots and #design-and-architecture. Easy to get a few ideas quickly. So many different concepts/ideas. Some commonalities, etc.
yeah i have a few factories elsewhere making more complex items but im at a loss for how to make one factory for multiple different items
