There's other few angles that, in time, made me change how I view social norms, and how, even if intertwined with morality, they differ in such meaningful ways:

1. Precisely, why is it worse to use "mean" words if the intent is clearly not to hurt said person, and they're just expressive? Ultimately, a lot of people are sensitive, and they just use big words to be edgy - does that make them evil? It's an argument that a lot of courts accept, where it can be reasonably shown the person didn't have intent to hurt (and that's very easy to do).

2. Precisely, why is it ok to post ignorant stuff, for you to be presented with data/things that show otherwise, and for you to disregard it, littering the "online streets" with garbage? You saw it in #💬┃general after the Krafton acquisition. It was madness.

Just yapping to yap, but understanding very few people make it personal and also practicing intellectual housekeeping has done wonders for me in the past decade. Always advertising it wherever I can 😄

Mapping sucks in PoE2, I agree. The only thing that motivates me to keep mapping is because it allows me to farm for alts. Making new characters and running the campaign again, going through build progression is far more exciting than the mapping loop.

The problem is they largely haven't done anything to make the endgame better, but that's more of a fundamental issue that requires basically scrapping the current endgame system and replacing it.

Which, to be fair, they are probably focused on finishing the campaign and missing classes before investing heavily into redesigning the endgame.

I haven't actually tried, but according to poe2db, the prefixes should be somewhat easy to get with Omen of H-Exalt (next exalt adds mods with the same tag, like Defence) and Omen of Sinistral Exalt (next exalt adds only prefixes)

I can see the argument of wanting to expedite leveling for alts and perhaps there should be something like that. Maybe the campaign should have shortcuts for 2nd+ characters.

I would just be hesitate to allow skipping the campaign entirely. I think there are different mentalities among the playerbase when it comes to how they engage with campaign vs endgame in PoE2:

• Some people prefer to just play the campaign, reroll, rinse and repeat.
• Some people prefer to reach endgame, for various reasons, whether to grind currency, min-max gear, etc.

How do you cater to those different mindsets without creating a situation where one choice is clearly superior and therefore every other choice feels bad? I think it's important that they try to create a game where most of the playerbase has a similar experience with similar expectations, else you risk creating a division in your audience that eventually leads to having to make decisions on game design that alienates a significant portion of players.

If we're talking PoE1, I'd agree. I think with PoE2 and the wider reach of the game across a more diverse audience, a double digit percentage wouldn't surprise me.

Remember that console players are a big part of PoE2 as well.

• Console players account for a double digit percentage of PoE2's playerbase
• The vast majority of console players (perhaps 80-90%) never reach endgame, a majority probably don't even finish the campaign in any given league

It's hard to assign reasons for the latter without metrics, but I think Steam achievements are a good source for study on how common this is across games in general. I'm sure we've all had moments where we see a Steam achievement like "Beat the game" but only a single digit percent of people have it. It could be bad game design, it could also just be a consequence of the audience/demographic the game caters to.

I agree that GGG has not focused on endgame at all for the most part. I think that's fair given they are currently focused on the core content like finishing the campaign and adding the missing classes/weapons.

I'm guessing that balancing priorities is kinda tough in the current state of the game.

Working on one thing has to come at the expense of another. It often really is "if we do this, we won't have time to do that" situation. At what point does endgame (re)design become a priority and what are we willing to neglect to be able to allocate the time and resources to it? Should a class release be delayed a league or two while endgame design takes priority?

I'm happy - although it took too long, as it usually does - that some parts of the content creators are waking up to the slop that PoE 2's combat is.

Great initiatives, amazing even, but just not compatible.

Unfortunately, the bigger voices are still caught on the systems and endgame, not realizing that if the combat doesn't feel great for most people, the game will die just on that. Not sure what the discussion is, but I 100% agree, from the perspective of someone who hires, keeps in touch with others who hire (both small and massively), and sees even internal reports. Especially in this day and age, physical networking is a major plus. But...well, just showing up isn't enough. Imho, those are company representatives, so, "digging a little" isn't immoral. Remember, people like you for you, not for what you know, unless they're very smart, and chances are, they won't be very smart - smell good, look good, as much as you can tell, try to please the other person, etc.

Something many people won't tell you is that when you start doing what you love as your job, you will eventually begin to love it less, in some cases you will even grow to hate it.

Doing what you love for money, having managers and bosses telling you what to do, how to do it, means you will often have to do things you don't want to. This slowly kills your passion for the work that used to be a source of joy.

If I were to offer career advice to someone who still has the choice to decide their career path, I would just say that you should carefully consider whether you really want to turn your hobby into a job and what that will potentially mean for your relationship with that hobby.

Another thing to consider is that game development jobs are among the lowest paying tech jobs in the industry. Programmers and artists in game development on average get paid less than other fields of technology.

Yes, exactly. Rejecting the idea of working on your passion is the right choice almost always. It's very rare you get to do it. On top of that, parents should teach their children to be self-interested. Not self-absorbed, not selfish, but always play to your interests:

• If possible, don't stay at a job that doesn't advance your career.
• If possible, stand your ground, to assert your positiong
• Think strategically about the relationships you form, true friends are very, very, very rare.

I think the saddest thing I see with children who come from even decent-but-not-goal-oriented families is that people just aren't thought to "think straight". Or, worse, they teach a form of self-interest that overlaps with being greedy and a menace. That can work, but it rarely does. There's this myth that assholes make it, but they don't. Not unless they're nice to the other gatekeepers - and that's what you must do as well.

In Asian societies everyone tries to send their children to the best school, tell them to learn, make connections already but as with the Western societies' example, because they don't have underlying "street smarts", they can't offer more than general, inherited wisdom. The overall idea is: define the baseline, see how you can get an edge, no matter where you are.

Yes, very different baselines across all reports I've ever seen. For Asian societies, there's a big historical component as well. So, that is their baseline. But where I know Asian societies fail is "soft skills", which are, (un?)fortunately way more important than hard skills, at least if we're talking about developed, trading countries. Manage a company is different from game development completely. It's like doing a good product and sell it well.

I think because most parents know that there is no good future in most art careers. YouTube is filled with professional artists who regret their art career because there are not a lot of job opportunities in an art career, and game art especially is a low paying career path.

This is a very common story these days, especially these past couple of years. There's a staggering amount of people in the comments who say they are going through the same experience.

So I do understand where some parents are coming from when they don't want their children to blindly pursue their passions, because being good at something doesn't always mean you will have a successful career doing that thing.

This is highly relatable for me, because I'm also a software engineer by profession.

I used to be very passionate and enthusiastic about software development, but throughout my career I've started to think about programming differently and it's no longer a hobby to me, it's just a job I do to make money so I can do other things, like play games.

Unlike my younger self, I do very little programming in my free time. My brain no longer considers it a hobby, it's like a chore now.

In my case, it's fortunate that I got into my career early on and was able to accumulate many years of experience long before the pandemic. It wouldn't be too difficult for me to find another job since plenty of companies are still hiring Senior Software Engineers. But for entry-level and mid-level? It's an extremely competitive job market for those positions.

Thought the same that the years of experience would be worth quite a bit but actually finding a decent job still took me a few months.

Otherwise same, when I started and was in uni I did lots of side projects. Now I'm mostly doing work and then other things. Dealing with people and building dumb things just because others want them makes you very much not enjoy it most of the time.

Its not like something that i would pursue in what i am doing now after getting a business degree but it got me the work visa to stay here. After 2 years, all the hands-on experience just manifest itself and i am doing things almost auto-pilot although it is not something i like to pursue

It's just different levels of ambition. The job hoppers are always chasing the better offer, but eventually it starts to look bad if you have such an extensive history of job hopping.

The thing is, at least in US tech jobs, there's basically no way to renegotiate your compensation. Until recently, applying to another company and getting a better offer was often the only way to actually get your existing employer to even consider renegotiating your compensation. This is not so much a viable strategy anymore though, in the current job market.

Older gen got amazing pension plans here, that got gutted now. The companies actually cared a bit about you, my mom told me that my grandpa actually got toys for her on christmas. Most companies I've been at i got nothing.

Personally for me it's when companies never take feedback or change bad behaviour/processes. I can endure it for a while but if it's a permanent thing that they claim they're getting better while nothing moves on after x rounds of feedback I'm done caring and move on. But i dont think being there for 3-4y is considered hopping anyway.

Nothing gets me more annoyed than asking for feedback then ignoring all the feedback and nothing changes - then please spare us with the whole HR process and we'd be happier.

Well in my last corpo it wasnt just HR but also the lead of IT who just listened but then nothing ever changed. I think we wasted 6 sessions at 45mins each to talk about issues - 1.5years later exactly nothing improved

I'm about to head to sleep but I am going to chime in real quick that those boomers who were at the same company for 10+ years were in an economy where that job was providing them a stable income that was capable of living off of comfortably while the majority of jobs now aren't keeping up with costs which forces you into a cycle of "stay until you have a better offer so you can keep living"

Yep, exactly. Wages today aren't keeping up with rising costs. Your compensation eventually falls far behind the current going market rate.

Companies don't proactively look at how much they should be paying for your job position. They keep paying you the same amount until you complain.

At least in the US, a senior programmer hired in 2025 will make more money than someone hired in 2020 at the same company (and still works there). The new hire will get paid based on the going market rate, while the old hire keeps getting paid the same amount based on the old market rate, with tiny/insignificant "raises" every year.

Hopping is only effective if you stay long enough to actually have experience to put in your resume.

The usual recommendation is around 2-3 years at a company before hopping.

Gives you enough time to do stuff, build up accomplishments to put on your resume.

Speaking for software, specifically, I mean.

If your resume is just job hopping every 6-12 months where the only thing you accomplished is one or two bullet points worth of crap, it's gonna look bad to hiring managers.

The industry forces you to lie in your resume too because no one want a zero experience new guy... Many short videos tell you "just lie on your resume and get a offer at first, then start to learn"

But unfortunately I'm bad at telling lies.

Don't lie. But also, ignore "you must have this much experience" in job postings. They're not always hard requirements.

You should still apply, even if you don't meet the requirements.

You lose nothing by trying, except a little bit of time.

Requirements on job postings can look intimidating, but a lot of the time they are basically just "wishlist" requirements and a lot of hiring managers will value candidates who are willing to learn.
