I just split the traffic in two random directions with the one way roads if the traffic is in the middle of a zone. After I do that I just start using things like busses and trains instead

the difference is, seems like you grew at an average pace
meanwhile when my population was about 400 people the city blew up and underwent an economic boom, abandoned buildings demolished and new skyscrapers rises up into the sky, thousands of people moved in and in just 20 seconds my city population went back to what it was previously, and the electricity problem wasn't even solved yet
