What they're referring to in leveling the playing field is the background tracking of certain stats that they had not displayed before, such as "Kills with X gun". Only certain parts of the game have prior stats connected to them, so when implementing the new player card, all the new stats start at 0, to prevent you having 2000 rifle kills but 0 kills with the 1865 Carbine, despite your prior use of it.
